I used to maintain computers used by farmers. I’m surprised they didn’t plant
crops in them. There was enough soil there. Floppy disks (this was a long time
ago) were unusable due to the abrasive action of the dirt.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2021-03-27 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

The rain has been falling less often.  Today there was sun for much
of the day.  I followed the eastern edge of my property from corner pole
to corner pole.  This was next to impossible before they thinned the
forest.  Bright green moss dominated the scene. It is too early for the
ferns and alder leaves.  Very few insects.  That will change.  However,
more snow is due tomorrow. Luckily the daffodils aren't blooming yet.
They often get covered by the last big snow of the season.

The sun has a few spots but there is more activity coming. During
the equinox ions slip through cracks in our magnetosphere. For a few
weeks aurora are stimulated with fewer ions.  I am unsure how this
relates to propagation.  But the longer daylight period enhances the
ionosphere.  I don't expect too much noise but I don't expect strong
signals either.  We shall see.

Please join us on (or near):

7047 kHz at z Monday (5 PM PDT Sunday)

All that we wish to stay

What is this world’s delight?
Lightning that mocks the night,
Brief even as bright.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Re: [Elecraft] Kpa500 not playing with my IC-7600

2021-03-27 Thread Ken Winterling
Tom,

While I do not have an IC-7600 I do use an IC-7610 with a KPA500; the cable
should be the same.
I use a DIY band data cable to connect the IC-7610 to the KPA500 and it has
worked for almost three years.

I'm curious as to the exact part numbers of the cables you purchased from
the two different vendors.
What are the vendor names?
Do you have a schematic diagram of either/both cables?

If you are interested, I can send you a schematic of the cable I built.

Re: [Elecraft] Questions on KXBC3 charging mechanism

2021-03-27 Thread Walter Underwood
I think this is answered in the manual. For 2500 mAh cells, this is on page 4.
The KXBC3 charges at 200 mA throughout the charging time set, suggesting that
2000 mAH cells would be charged in 10 hours (referred in battery literature as
a C/10 rate). However, the charging process is not 100% efficient, so
additional charging time must be added, typically 20%. So a fully depleted 2000
mAH battery would require about 12 hours to reach full capacity.

The charging time must be adjusted for batteries of different capacity as
follows: Charging Time (hours) = 1.2 X (cell mAH rating) / 200

For example, to charge fully depleted 2500 mAH cells: 1.2 X 2500 / 200 = 15
hours (Set charger for 16 hours)

[Elecraft] Questions on KXBC3 charging mechanism

2021-03-27 Thread Geert Jan de Groot

Hi,

Searching the web and searching the mail archive didn't find the result
I was looking for, but I found a number of broken links pointing to
now-defunct Yahoo groups on this matter..

I'm confused on the charging method used on the KXBC3 charger.
The standard low-current charge method for NiMH is "14 hours, 0.1C", so
in the case of my 1900mAh eneloops, 14 hours of 190 mA. The KX3 manual
doesn't say much, but the KXBC3 manual specifies a 200mA charge current.
That would suggest that 14-16 hours should give a full charge without
too much overcurrent.

However, while charging I noticed that the KX3 draws close to 500mA, so
I am not sure. Given that normal receiver operation draws 200mA, I fail
to see how this would work with 200mA charge current - numbers don't add up.

I looked at the schematics. There is a low-drop voltage regulator (U2,
LT1965) that seems to be used as current source. The regulator can be
controlled via pin6 (shutdown pin). The voltage regulator supplies 2
resistors R8 and R9 (12E each). The 3.3V output voltage over the
resulting 6E resistance suggests a current source of roughly 500mA,
which is closer to my measurements. There is an additional 20E resistor
R10 which is switched using Q1 which would drive the current up to 710mA.

However, even being "low voltage drop" the regulator would need 3.3V
input voltage and likely a little more, say 4V. Batteries on their way
charging have a voltage of 10.5V, which means that this circuit alone
needs 14.5V input voltage to function, but the charger is specified . So
the current source can't give full current because the input voltage is
too low to function.

Also, the charge time isn't 14 hours, but selectable 4, 8, 12, 16 hours.
I don't see how that would work - people doing 2850mAh cells, as
reporting on the reflector, won't be able to get a full charge even
after 16 hours, not with the 200mA specified in the manual. And what are
the 4 and 8 hour charge settings for?

I guess the figures really don't add up and I don't understand how this
is supposed to work. Can someone enlighten me?

Good day, and thanks for reading.

My newly acquired KPA500 doesn’t want to play with my IC-7600.

In operate mode when I key the radio, the LEDs on the KPA500 display solid into
the yellow, and there is no output. The amp is not faulting.

I’m using an Icom 7 pin DIN cable (two actually from two different vendors) and
tried two different radios, both IC-7600s with the same result.

In the KPA menus, I have set the “radio” option to “analog”.

Am I missing something else?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - no output power

2021-03-27 Thread Christian Janssen DL1MGB
Hi all,

just wanted to let you know that my K3 is back again with full output power.

We found the Diode D1 on the LPA board. On the anode side, it had shown full
power, on the other side, nothing. When unsoldering it, it was already very
loose. The diode itself was intact, but had no contact at all. Most probably it
got loose after heating up and unsoldering itself. New diode soldered in, TUNE,
smoke. After comparing some voltages around the diode, we found Q6 to be
faulty. That's why more than the maximum rated current of 1A flowed through the
diode. Changed also the transistor and now everything was working again, full
power, no smoke, no smell.

Most probably, it has to do with the same problem as DK3WE already experienced
8 years ago: http://www.the-mule.de/?p=1275#more-1275

Many thanks again for DD0VS for helping me in finding the faulty parts!

[Elecraft] How and How Often to Clean KPA-1500 Cooling Systems?

2021-03-27 Thread N4ZR
The other day I noticed some buildup of dust on the top vents of my
power supply.  I used a vacuum on them and was surprised by how much
appeared to come out from inside.  This raised a question - how often is
it recommended to clean the cooling systems of the amp and its power
supply, and what's the best way to do it?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Supply noise

2021-03-27 Thread N4ZR
Not heard here, although my KPA-1500 gets fairly heavy use.  Power
supply is on the floor, which no doubt helps with noise.

I am pretty sure it is not RF getting into the Power Supply. I have
followed K9YC practices of bonding the K3, KPA1500 Power Supply and RF
decks to the ground bus. All cables going into and between are wound on
snap on or toroid ferrites.

Has anyone else run across this? I plan to open up the power supply and
check for loose parts and do some more testing after the contest.
