[Elecraft] KX1 RX and TX Problem

2021-12-24 Thread Matt Stumbo via Elecraft
I had the pleasure of recently assembling a KX1 and KXAT1 kit. I had the KX1
working on both 20m and 40m, which last worked on Sunday. Unfortunately I now
have the misfortune of debugging an issue with it.

Today I found the RX and TX no longer work. The KX1 powers on, the menus behave
as I expect, the AF gain changes the audio and Filter knob changes the audio,
tuning results in the ATU relays clicking but without any power out the tuner
doesn’t find a solution and displays 0 W and 9.9 SWR. The RF Gain knob doesn’t
have any noticeable affect.

I’ve done the following:
* Inspected the KX1 for poor solder joints and shorts, found none
* Verified R4 is fully clockwise
* Verified Q6 collector is isolated from ground
* Removed the KXAT1 and jumped J7 pin 1 to pin 3
* Verified TX is 0 W with an external wattmeter
* Completed the voltage tables

The voltage tables indicated the following issues:
* U1 pin 14, expected 0V measured 5V
* Most U2 pins do not measure expected. I attribute this to U7 2.7V power
output measuring 1V.
* U7 pin 4, expected 1.17V measured 0V
* U7 pin 5, expected 2.69V measured 1.0V
* Q5 Emitter on Tune expected 2.24V measured 1.48V
* All other measurements were in family with the expected values

The issue that sticks out to me the most is the U7 pin 5 output is too low.
This results in the DDS U2 not receiving the power it needs to operate, hence
most of the U2 voltage measurements do not match predicts. Is there any reason
this 2.7V output could be low besides U7 failure? Are there other areas I
should probe not included in the voltage table? The U7 input voltage is good,
5V. Do I need to replace U7?

To make matters worse, while I was measuring the Q6 collector voltage, I
briefly shorted the base to the collector with the DMM probe. I have not
noticed any new issues with the KX1. The KX1 still turns on, the buttons work,
etc. Are there parts I should check to make sure I didn’t break or stress
anything?

Thanks and Happy Holidays everyone!

Re: [Elecraft] Stripping & Tinning Enameled Wire - Fast, Easy, Reliably

2021-12-24 Thread Peter Hall
Hi Gwen,

I love my Hakko FR301 de-soldering gun but, while I've used a variety of
melt/burn techniques for enamel wire insulation, I had not thought of using the
de-soldering tool. I haven't noticed anyone mention wire stripping tweezers,
which I've found to be a really handy tool when making inductors with a variety
of wire sizes. I settled on a single size tweezer:

https://au.element14.com/knipex/15-11-120/wire-stripper-0-6mm/dp/875958?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6Ongl-b99AIVwg5yCh3cgwwJEAQYASABEgLFsPD_BwE&mckv=_dc|pcrid|501152839127|pkw||pmt||slid||product|875958|pgrid|123988903131|ptaid|pla-293946777986|&CMP=KNC-GAU-GEN-SMART-SHOPPING

Purists would probably have a few different sizes but the one referenced deals
with my requirements for small receiving toroids, up to (e.g.) the LPF
inductors in the 2200 m PA I've just finished (about 16 AWG, as I recall).
These tweezers are very sharp and quite compact, so they can be angled to
optimize the tinned lengths on e.g. partially-mounted toroids. It's a slightly
longer and calmer process than the melt/burn approach.

I'd love to have one of those vacuum desoldering tools. I feel in techno-lust
with them watching Mr. Carlson's Lab on YouTube. I might try that trick you
discovered, but I found that my electronic plasma arc lighter burns off enamel
on anything but the thickest of magnet wire. Hold the wire with pliers, though,
the inductance heats the wire very fast, and the enamel burns off in a
twinkling.

I'd avoid using the plasma arc trick on a toroid already soldered to the board
at the other end. That might let out more than a little bit of magic smoke.

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: Need a logger recommendation

2021-12-24 Thread Curt
Logger32 does this very nicely.   Have used this for years.  Can ring an
audio alert on the PC speaker when it sees one you need and have set
filters for.   I suspect N1MM might do this also via the telnet window
but have not tried that part exactly.   T
he logger needs to access a online cluster like the VE7CC Telnet via
internet so it takes a bit of integration config to get it all working
but it is stable and faultless for me over many years now.

I have been using CommCAT (by Howard, W6HN) for at least  15 years.
I have

been a beta tester.  It has one feature that really set it apart.  Every
time a DX spot  appeared that I needed for a new bend, mode, both, grid,
etc., CommCAT could send a text message or an email to my iPhone.
W6HN has

stopped supporting the program, and the text alert function is gone.

Can anyone recommend a good logger that includes some kind of alert via
text or email when a spot appears for one I need?

Thanks.  Happy New Year to all.

Re: [Elecraft] Stripping & Tinning Enameled Wire - Fast, Easy, Reliably

2021-12-24 Thread SteveL
The trick is to get a small blob of fresh melted solder on/in the tip of the
desoldering tool. It will stay there as you slowly insert the enameled wire
through the blob and into the tip of the tool an inch or so, melting off the
insulation as you go before activating the vacuum. Practice a couple of times
on scrap wire to get the non-critical timing right and build your confidence.

I’ve only tried fine (22 - 30) gauge or so wire typical of QRP or receiver
designs. For a high-current heavy gauge wire used in power applications, I
suspect some combination of the usual sanding, burning, and scraping would be
appropriate.

It really is brilliant! I wish I could remember who I got the idea from years
ago, but I thought it such a good “secret” that I promised (mentally) to pass
it along periodically - particularly when the subject comes up. Like most,
until that point I struggled sanding, burning, scraping… to get enameled wire
clean enough for soldering, never confident the job was well done. No longer
with this method.

Merry Christmas,

Doug,

I use 800 deg F and a wide tip to get the job done.
Of course my Hakko 808 is a lot easier.  Clean the inside of the Hakkko

Re: [Elecraft] Stripping & Tinning Enameled Wire - Fast, Easy, Reliably

2021-12-24 Thread Douglas Hagerman via Elecraft
How hot does the solder need to be to burn off magnet wire insulation? I have
my soldering station set to 710 degrees, and that does not seem to be enough
when I try the “blob on end of iron” method.

The spinning stripper tool works great for wire thicker than 24AWG or
so. But for

thin "receiver" wires it just breaks them off.

Re: [Elecraft] Simulated stereo

2021-12-24 Thread Victor Rosenthal 4X6GP

Dale,

This works by dividing the audio spectrum into several segments and
sending alternate segments to different channels! It wouldn't be much
good for CW. Interesting, though.

pitch, which helps in picking out CW signals in QRM.

My question is: is there some kind of device that you can get that will
take the monaural audio from a non-Elecraft radio or a K2 and produce
similar effects?

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Remote Software?

2021-12-24 Thread Dave B via Elecraft
I heard that one of the major competitors is working on TSFoldDX mode.

They fold space and time so that you can just talk to the DX face to
face and hand the QSL card over in person.  Sadly, that was put on hold
due to Covid concerns.

They had it working briefly about 10 years ago, but the development of
the pocket Nuclear power pack is a bit of an issue since the Fukushima
problem.  Caused incidentally by another unexpected aspect of folding
time and space from a planet based point of view!  (But you didn't hear
that from me!...)

Seasons Greetings, Happy New Year etc, and GD DX to All.  (Though we
might be swiped by another solar event today, wrecking the ionosphere
for some, but causing some nice lights in the sky for others perhaps.)

PS:    As I believe the K4 uses a Linux based embedded computer.  The
options for remote control are many and vast.  Some even will work with
a Windows based client.

I've not even seen a K4 let alone got hands on one, but if not already
present (I could not see reference of such in the preliminary user or
remote software control manuals) it should not be beyond possible to
have a small web server built into it's system with proper security
features (certificate based authentication and encryption) that you
could connect to with any existing web browser to gain a full and secure
virtual front panel remotely.

Or, a "K4Remote" tool, written in Java (or other cross platform
environment) that would run on Windows, Mac or other Linux machines, to
connect to your K4, and provide a full remote front panel and audio etc.

The difficulty with all of them is not the remote control, or front
panel updates, but passing audio and other time critical data (CW key
etc) with minimum latency.

[Elecraft] KPA 1500 Status message %

2021-12-24 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs and YL,

Can someone please tell me what the % sign with Status message of say
67% indicates. I think it is the efficiency of the amplifier at a given
point. The same Status screen displays: forward power, Voltage, Current
and temperature as well as the % figure. I looked through the manual but
can not find the answer to my question. A quick calculation seems to
indicate it indicates power out to power input. Thank you.
