Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 on 10Meters

2022-01-25 Thread Larry Christensen
The station is working as it should. I checked all the ideas. Still no joy.
Turned it off and went to supper. I came back and turned everything on it
worked as it should.
Maybe just needed a reboot.
Thank everyone for your ideas.

[Elecraft] K4 R28 installed

2022-01-25 Thread Bill Miner via Elecraft
I do not have wired or optical fiber high speed internet service at my QTH.

My Verizon hot-spot device is equipped with a USB-C jack. I simply connected
the Hot-spot device to one of the K4 USB jacks on the rear panel. After a short
delay, I was able to download the new R28 directly from the Verizon hot-spot.

The K4 is now up to date. Very simple to do.

[Elecraft] Elecraft will not be at Hamcation Feb 11-13

2022-01-25 Thread Eric Swartz
In an abundance of caution we made the hard decision today to cancel
Elecraft's participation at the Florida Hamcation show (a little over two
weeks from today, 2/11-13). This decision was made to protect the health
of our booth team that would have been at the show.

We will be exhibiting at the on-line QSO Today Ham Expo this March 12-13.
Their in-booth personal video interaction format looks to be much improved
from the prior show too :-) Please drop by and say hi!

Hopefully Covid will calm back down soon so we can get out to see everyone
in person. We miss you all and look forward to seeing you soon.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 on 10Meters

2022-01-25 Thread G4GNX
I can’t remember where or exactly what the settings are, but between the 3
pieces in use, it’s possible to set the KPA500 to stay in standby, per band. It
was a long time back, but I remember setting mine so that I could not TX hight
power on 6 metres, due to the antenna not being rated above 100W.

I hope that gives you some clues.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 on 10Meters

2022-01-25 Thread Rick NK7I
Did the KPA500 show an asterisk (*) when key down?  If not, it's not
seeing the PTT actions (key out).

If the KAT500 is content with the match, you'll only hear one fast
kerchunk of the relays (test, happy, shaddup).  If it's not trying, it
may not be seeing the PTT and/or RF.  (Has the K3 transmitter been
calibrated lately?)

Reseat all the cables and verify the settings in the KAT500 for 10 meter
operation (antenna choice); over time some minor corrosion can appear.

And make sure that the tuning output level of the K3 is set at 10-25
watts (and shows output too).  Mine was set at 10 watts and consistently
worked (now I use a K4, KPA1500 and a much better antenna, no tuner needed).

If CW, was VOX on?

Rick NK7I

[Elecraft] K4: RX Dynamic Range Optimization

2022-01-25 Thread Victor Abell
Why is the MENU item "RX Dyn. Range Optimization"
unlocked and turned on when power is turned on, even if
it were locked and tuned off when power was removed?

At R26 it was displayed as a multi-colored 'R' and now
at R28 it is displayed as "DR+".

Re: [Elecraft] K4HD Executive Summary Request

2022-01-25 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Gord,

The ongoing worldwide supply chain debacle has impacted K4HD module
development. We’ve already redesigned PC boards twice to work around chip
shortages.

We’ll keep everyone updated.

Meanwhile, we’re hearing from those who took delivery of a K4D instead that
performance in strong-signal conditions is excellent.

[Elecraft] K4HD Executive Summary Request

2022-01-25 Thread gordon young
Gentlemen,

Having ordered a K4D with the 3rd group (order 26415), when I expressed
immediate interest in the K4HD module.

Would you be able to provide a high level summary of the progress and current
forecast for that particular piece of kit? Of course I’d prefer to have it
included and calibrated from the factory when the new toy box arrives.

Thanks in advance!

[Elecraft] K1 Question

2022-01-25 Thread Paul Kirley

Tony K2MO asked:

I noticed that the VFO on my 4-band K1 doesn't tune above 14062 and
21061.0 yet it tunes to 7068.6 on 40 meters. The tuning range on 30
meters is 85 kHz (10077 to 10162) so I'm assuming the rig had the
smaller tuning range crystal installed. Tuning range on 40 meters is:
 6986 to 7068.6.

So the question is: how can I shift the tuning range on 20 and 15 meters
so I can tune above 062 and 061 on 14 and 21 MHz? The current tuning
range is 13077 to 14062 on 20 meters and 20976 to 21061.0 on 15 meters.

I recommend that you download the K1 manual if you don't have one for your rig:
https://ftp.elecraft.com/K1/Manuals%20Downloads/E740016%20K1%20manual%20rev%20J.pdf
On page 38 of this manual is the information that you need.

First, the size of the tuning range is set by the choice of capacitor C2 on the
RF board. This also affects the tuning rate and possibly the drift rate.

Second, the lower end of the tuning range is set by squeezing or spreading the
turns on the big toroid L1. I think that the VFO tunes backward (K1 output up
as VFO down), so you may want to squeeze the turns. But read the manual to be
sure. Keep in mind that page 38 of the manual is part of the assembly
instructions; you may need to remove some parts of the K1 (like the band
module) before adjusting L1. Or maybe you can tweak L1 a bit, then check the
effect on the K1's output frequencies and repeat.

Third, per-band differences in output frequencies result from differences in
the frequencies of the crystals on the band module from their nominal values.
I believe that these are unavoidable. If you want to cover the bottom edge of
each band, your measurements suggest that 40 meters is the band to watch. If
that's not a concern, you may be able to move the frequency coverages up more
than 14 kHz.

73, Paul W8TM
