[Elecraft] KAT2

2016-03-19 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I recently installed the KAT2 in my K2. Using a 20 meter inverted V dipole,
it was working great with no problems. Then I tried it out on a end fed
antenna and it also tuned it up. Then I switched back to my Inverted V and
every time I try to tune it up I get LO P on the display. I looked it up
and this means Low Power, so I increased the power to 15 watts and I still
get the same message. I can't increase the power any more. Does anyone know
what is happening?
Thank you

[Elecraft] WSPR

2016-04-02 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I'm wondering if I am missing something. I'm trying to run WSPR with my K2.
I'm using a Signalink USB and have the transmit set at 140971 and receive
at 14956 (as per WSPR instructions). My PC clock is in sync with the WSPR
program, and I have the AF Gain at about 1 db. I have it set at 20%
Transmit. The Idle box is unchecked and the K2 is set at USB. I see a
bunch of signals on the waterfall, but I am not receiving or transmitting
any signals.

[Elecraft] MARS on KX3

2017-02-03 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I'm looking into possibly getting involved in MARS. The guy that runs it
locally sent the following question about the KX3:
Can the Elecraft KX3 be opened to permit full operation from 1.8mHz to
29. mHz and do they have installed TCXO (0.5%) frequency stability or
the ability to install the hardware. MARS requires frequency
accuracy/stability to be +/- 20Hz of center frequency on assigned channels
for transmit.
Is this possible with the KX3? If so how?

[Elecraft] Question about K2

2017-06-22 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I got a question about the Elecraft K2. A friend borrowed mine and he said
that he was running PSK31 and it just shut down on him and after that it
would no longer transmit. Once I got it back it seems to be working but not
transmitting. Am I correct in assuming that it is the PA transistors that
need to be replaced?

[Elecraft] KX3 and WSJT-X Setup

2018-02-14 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I am having a little trouble here. I have a KX3 that I'm trying to setup
for FT8 using WSJT-X v1.8.0. I'm using a Signalink USB. My operating system
is Linux Mint 18.3
I'm not finding the correct settings for it to work right. I can get it to
decode sometimes. I can get the KX3 to transmit but I really do not think
it is transmitting because when I try WSPR, it does not show me receiving
anyone or anyone receiving my signal. With Windows it was easy, just set
the input and output to CODEC and Applications at 50% and it worked great.
I am having trouble finding the settings for the KX3, Signalink, and WSJT-X
to all work together.

[Elecraft] K2 Locked up

2016-08-30 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I was running PSK on my K2 and my cat got up on my desk and started moving
the VFO knob off frequency. So I decided to put on Lock and pushed the
button until it told me that it was locked, everything was normal. Then I
tried to unlock it and it would not work. I turned it off and restarted it
and everything is still locked. I unplugged it and again it is still
locked. The decimal point is not flashing. I looked in the K2 Manual and
could not find a place where I could resolve the problem. Does anyone have
any ideas?

[Elecraft] KX3 CW Decode

2016-12-06 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I am in the process of learning CW and I am having a little bit of issue
with my KX3 on decoding CW. I am wanting it to be able to decode CW on TX
only so I can work on sending. By pressing the DATA button I selected TX
ONLY and I have the power setting at 0.0 watts into a dummy load. I am
using the plug in paddles for the KX3. However it will not decode anything.
I tuned to a strong signal and tried the different RX Thresholds and it
would not decode anything there either. I am not sure if I have it set up
right or I am missing a setting or something. Can anyone please help?

[Elecraft] K2 PA

2020-04-28 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I just replaced the PA's on my K2. I replaced Q7, Q8, Q11, Q13 with parts
from the Elecraft PA Replacement Kit. I have done this in the past with no
problems. Power is supplied from a switching power supply that supplies
power to a power distribution box that has a fuse for each output. This
distribution box supplies power to a small 2 meter 70cm mobile/base radio
and a LED light strip. This setup has been working with no trouble for a
while. Now as soon as I plug in the power cord to the K2 all of the power
coming from the distribution box shuts off. I used the same power cord on
two other radios and it worked just fine. So the problem lies in the K2.
While working on the K2 I messed with replacing only the parts mentioned
above. I went over the PA's with a magnifying glass looking for solder
bridges and other faults and could not find any. This problem did not exist
before I changed the PA's. I would appreciate any ideas as to what may be
the problem.

[Elecraft] Kenwood MC 43S Mic of K2

2021-04-26 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I have been using a Kenwood MC-43S for my K2. The mic is still in very
good condition but the PTT button has broken. The PTT button that you
press to engage transmit is broken off. The little part that actually
presses the little PTT button is what broke. When I took it apart to
find the fault the part that had broken off was missing so I could not
glue it back together. I was wondering if anyone has an old MC-43S
that is good for parts where I can buy to repair it.

[Elecraft] K2 and Signalink USB Setup

2021-08-05 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I have been using a Signalink USB with my K2 and the last time I
hooked the SignaLink to the K2 there was a real bad feedback sound
every time the rig went into transmit. It received just fine. So I
contacted Tigertronics and started a dialog with them and it turns out
I could have been setting up the Signalink wrong. Here is the setup, I
have my K2 wired to use a Kenwood MC-43S microphone. When I bought the
Signalink for the K2 they sent me the microphone cable and an Audio
cable. As per the instructions that I received from Tigertronics I am
to use the 8 pin microphone cable to connect from the K2 to the
Signalink. Then I have to connect the audio cable from the Ext Speaker
jack on the back of the K2 to the SPKR jack on the back of the
SignaLink. Then the USB from the SignaLink to the computer. Now
Tigertronics are saying that I do not need the audio cable. In the
dialog they asked what microphone I am using what it the pinout for
that microphone:
Pin1 Mic Input
Pin 2 PTT
Pin 3 N/C
Pin 4 N/C
Pin 5 8 VDC **
Pin 6 Speaker **
Pin 7 Mic GND
Pin 8 GND

** Speaker audio and power are available on some models.

Tigertronics is now asking for certain if I have Audio on Pin 6. Is
there a way for me to check this without having to take the K2 apart?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Power Level

2021-08-17 Thread Aaron K5ATG
After posting the question I found this on page 102 of the manual:
RTTY/Data Operation
Since some RTTY/Data mode duty cycles approach 100%, you should reduce
power to about 5 watts or avoid transmitting at 10 watts for longer
than 1-2 minutes at a time. (Power levels above 10 watts are not
recommend.)

For me, 5 watts with FT8 is more than adequate.

[Elecraft] K2 Menu and Tune Buttons

This evening I tried to get into the menu on my K2 and pushing or
holding the MENU/EDIT button does nothing at all. When I press the ANT

hold the button to tune with the internal ATU the display LCD just
shows Atu and the bar graph goes completely blank. This is the first
time that it has done this and it has been working just fine until
now. I'm not sure how to remedy this.
