[Elecraft] K2 1963 On The Air (almost)
Hi, guys. Just a brief respite, and you can go back to arguing and casting aspersions and libelous assertions about things none of us have any control over. I just got my K2 #1963 from Randy Allen the builder. It's SWEET! (I'd bought it more than a few years ago, gotten it partially assembled, when Life and General Unpleasantness intervened. I'd re-packed it in its box, which was placed in a box, which was in the bottom of another box. It just recently surfaced, and of course things at work have been way too busy, so I went looking for a good builder. Randy Allen is a G-O-O-D builder. He corrected my assembly mistakes, upgraded the firmware, and finished off the kit -- with all the options except battery, 100W amp and tuner -- in record time. I installed a Power Pole on it, and fired up the receiver last night. I heard Argentina on 20 m, with just my 40m loop lying along the baseboard of the spare bedroom. (Can you tell I still haven't finished moving?) Thanks, Randy! I'm looking forward to reading the manual, and doing some transmitting soon. As you were! 73 de KD4CSO, Arthur ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Soldering Station
Tom asks, <...What is the best soldering station to use in construction a K2- and why ? The one you already have! Which, in my case is a good ol' Weller WTCPT, which I've owned since 1980 or so. I use the smallest conical tip, 700 degrees F, which appears to work quite well. It's also useful for assembling adapter cables, soldering RF connectors (small ones!) and the like. (Who don't manufacturers standardize on connectors?) 73 de Art KD4CSO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Anyone know a good builder?
Hi, guys. I've been trying to hook up with a good builder for my K2. I can never seem to find that junction of time and interest to finish the thing off. (I'm on about page 35.) I have all the options, except the battery. I sent email off to two of the guys on the builders list who looked closest. The first person I emailed responded, and we were sending email back and forth when he stopped communicating. (This was about three weeks ago.) I hate not knowing what's happened to people! So I moved down the list. The 2nd guy's email and address were wrong on the Elecraft home page. Thank God for QRZ.COM and the FCC database, at least one of which always has the correct info. An email to him at his new addres has gone unanswered. Does anyone here know of a good reliable K2 builder? I'd rather have someone in the DC Metro area, so I can dropoff and deliver, but I'm willing to ship it off somewhere if the builder is really quick and interested. Since I'm neither blind nor terribly old, I'm willing to pay a reasonable builder's fee, negotiable beforehand. Thanks for any leads. 73 de KD4CSO, Arthur (The K2 is #1963, so that gives you some idea of how long it's been sitting. Two houses, and three dogs have come and gone. I have all the upgrades.) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Yaesu FT-2000 v K-3?
Has anyone had a chance to compare the K3 to the Yaesu FT-2000? They seem to be in the same general price range, and I'm thinking about buying one of them... [Elecraft] RE: Elecraft Digest, Vol 37, Issue 4
Ken writes, <...When I was first introduced to Ham Radio I was very fortunate to meet Harry W9TT...He taught me to simply listen to one station of interest and let the others carry on. I have never understood the obsession of the modern CW ops with *narrow* filters. I use my brain and don't seem to miss any QSOs ;-) ... My first receiver was a Knight "Ocean Hopper," which set the standard for wide bandpass in the 1960s. (It was probably ancient then!) As I remember, it had NO filters, narrow or otherwise. When I tuned 80 meters, I heard pretty much the entire band. Even my newly Novice-licensed 11-year-old brain soon learned to sort out the CW conversation I was interested in from the hundreds I wasn't. These days, my older, more addled brain appreciates the help of narrow filters. But I'm sure I could still do it the old way if I had to. (BTW, I've got K2 1963 and a Yeasu FT 990-DC, and love them both for their differences.) 72/73 de KD4CSO/Arthur ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
