[Elecraft] FS: Fully Loaded QRP K2

2007-10-04 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Some of you might remember that I own a K2 (serial no: 4288) and that I had
been experiencing problems with its power output. You will also remember
that I have been trying to sell it for sometime, without any success so far.

Recently the rig started showing signs of more problems with its output
power, such that when I try anything above 5 watts at 3.5 or 7 Mhz, I get a
high current warning. This normally used to be around 6.5 watts at 3.5 and
7.8 watts at 7 Mhz. I presume this is a sign that some component is showing
signs of deteriorating. I am not sure if it is transmitting any signal at
all, since I could not make any QSOs on those bands and could hardly make
more than 63 during the Lighthouse Weekend on 14 Mhz. (I am mainly an SSB
only person.) I have heard another friend, who seems to own a K2/100, is
experiencing similar problems. So, I have got a feeling it might be due to
a faulty part somewhere.

It was fun getting "beautiful signal" comments as long as it worked but as
far as I am concerned, the rig is rapidly becoming unusable. I know I
cannot fix it because I am no builder and I know it would be very difficult
to get it past the customs on its return if I send it to the states for
fixing (unless I take a flight myself and bring it back with me).

So, now I intend to sell it at e-bay, hoping it will get a good offer. If I
can get a good offer, I am considering a K3. Before that, I wanted to try
my chances at the Elecraft reflector, first. Please e-mail me your offer
privately, if you are interested, and let us see how it goes.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - How good on SSB?

2007-03-16 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
I have made more than 1000 QSOs (85 DXCCs so far) using QRP K2 and have
always got excellent reports, using a simple inverted vee dipole antenna
ONLY.

It is true I have missed a few DXCC entities like Aghanistan, Korea,
Jibouti and South Africa because I could not get over the pileup of big
guns, but these are about all that I have missed. If you are patient
enough, you eventually get through. So I never bothered to use a PA.

[Elecraft] FS: Built K2 (Europe)

2007-02-24 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
I have got a fully loaded K2 for sale:

Basic K2
KSB2 (SSB Option)

K160RX (160m option)

KIO2 (RS-232 Interface)

KNB2 (Noise Blanker)

KDSP2 (Advanced Internal DSP Filter)

KAT2 (20W Internal Automatic Antenna Tuner)

FDIMP (Finger Dimple)

Yaesu MH-31 microphone

Plus all documentation.

It was built by an experienced HAM who has also built a KX1 and K1. He
works mainly CW, I work SSB. So, I know it is FB on CW. I had it tested at
the Telecommunications Authority laboratories to be able to register it.
According to their mesaurements the rig seems to be slightly misaligned (I
hope this is the correct term). The maximum output powers they have
measured are:

2.10 W at 1.8 MHz
-- W at 3.5 MHz (they somehow could not measure. I do not know why.)
8W at 7 MHz
11 W at 10 MHz
13.8 W at 14 MHz
-- W at 18 MHz (they somehow could not measure. I do not know why.)
9.6 W at 21 MHz
7.5W at 24 MHz
6.06 W at 28 MHz

I have made about 1000 SSB QSOs with it, including Japan and Brazil, using
a 4-band inverted vee antenna and have not observed any other problem. It
seems to work allright an all bands, apart from the maximum power output
problem. I am not capable of fixing it because I am not a builder.

I will sell it for 1000 Euros + Shipping.

Please respond off the list if you are interested.

[Elecraft] A few stupid questions

2006-12-17 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
My K2 has got SSB, the I/O module and the data cable. So to get myself
familiar with digital modes I conected the K2 to a laptop and started
experimenting with HRD as a starting point. I found HRD to be a beautifully
designed software. Just incredible. I can't wait to try it on my Yaesu
FT-857 which has got everything behind some obscure menus hidden somewhere.
HRD will provide a magnificient interface for the 857.

As for the K2, because HRD can control the TX, I was assuming I could hook
up an inexpensive headphones+mike set to the computer and that the computer
would/could provide enough pre-amplification to run the K2 from the set,
saving me the trouble of having to build a special interface box in
between. However, as things turned out, I could neither run the mike from
the computer nor get the audio into the headset, unless I plug it into K2
direct. Am I wrong in this assumption or is there a way to do it?

The second question relates to PSK31. I tried listening to PSK31 on various
frequencies, especially around the default "favourites" in HRD to get
myself familiar with what it looks like and even tried sending a CQ message
to give it a try but could not hear any signal. I was presuming that there
was noone doing PSK31 at that specific moment but then I had this idea that
perhaps I needed something more than the simple K2 data cable to run in
between the computer and the rig. Am I right in that assumption?

[Elecraft] Another Microphones Question

2006-08-31 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Hi all,

A friend gave me a Gamma LH-085 telecommunication headset. The headphone is
32 ohms. I found in K2 manual that it will work with almost any headphone.
So that part seems to be OK.

The microphone specs say it is "Dynamic 19mm 200 ohms".

If I attempt at connecting this headset to the K2, would the 200 ohms cause
any problem? I could not find any info about this in the K2 manual (as
opposed to say the FT857 manual, which says it would work with micropohes
in the 200-600 ohm range). The only info I could find was that a 600 ohm
microphone would work.

Re: [Elecraft] Uzbekistan to Japan Elecraft qrp qso

2006-07-22 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Uzbekistan is much nearer to Japan than my location. I've had many QSOs
with Japan using just 7.6 watts (requested) power. During the last IARU HF
contest I've had many contacts with Brazil, too. They were all sounding
very strong and they all heard me very clear. And remember, all this is
done on SSB with a simple 4-band inverted vee antenna and about 45 meters
of RG58 between my K2 and the antenna. If my CW was good enough, I am sure
I could reach further distances.

[Elecraft] IARU HF Contest

2006-07-09 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
If there is no better scoring candidate this year and if I have not
miscalculated somewhere, I think I will be getting the second best all time
high score in single op. phone only QRP category.

My calculated score is roughly about half of the all time best.

My short comings were:
- 45m of RG58 going to my antenna. Next year I will definitely change it to
a RG213.
- Simple 4-band inverted vee dipole antenna. Especially at 80m it has got a
very high take off angle which prohibits me from reaching longer distances.
- Slightly unfavorable weather conditions (read that as static noise)
although it was quite good for most part part of the contest.
- Possibly a slightly misaligned (I hope this is the correct term) K2. The
maximum output powers of my K2 according to the test lab of the Turkish
Telecommunications Authority are:

2.10 W at 1.8 MHz
-- W at 3.5 MHz (they somehow could not measure. I do not know why.)
8W at 7 MHz
11 W at 10 MHz
13.8 W at 14 MHz
-- W at 18 MHz (they somehow could not measure. I do not know why.)
9.6 W at 21 MHz
7.5W at 24 MHz
6.06 W at 28 MHz

I suspect the output power might be a little low at 80m, too. However, I am
not sure if it is above or below 5 watts. (I am not the builder, BTW. But
the K2 works FB otherwise.)

My advantages were:
- A well matched inverted vee (I spent two weeks at the roof to get the SWR
down to below 1.2 >;-) ) (Unfortunately 2.2 at 21 MHz but it seems to have
worked OK as far as the contest went.)
- No XYL this year >;-)
- And of course a K2

Many thanks to the designers and producers of this marvellous rig. I am
proud to be the owner of one.

[Elecraft] Propagation and further DX News

2006-05-26 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
I finally managed to contact a US station (KP4BME) yesterday with 10 Watts
on 20 meters. The propagation is just beautiful nowadays.

As for the special event stations I'll be running, the callsigns TC150HP
and TC150DD have been approved. I expect to setup the antenna on Monday and
start calling CQ on Tuesday as TC150HP from Haydar Pasha train station.
I'll be on the air between 30 May and 30 June, mainly after 14:00Z until
the time I get tired or XYL starts shouting on the phone, which ever is
earlier ;-) However I may not be able te get on the air everyday. So, do
look out. I intend to call at frequencies around 7.092 and 14.270, if they
are available, since these are the national calling freq.s I expect to be
on 20 and 40 m mainly but I might give other bands a try, too, to make good
use of the propagation.

I'll probably be using a Yaesu FT-857, since my K2 lacks the 100W option.
However, I am just too fond of the K2, so you never know ;-)

Hope to meet you on the air.

[Elecraft] New Elecraft Products

Seeing all these suggestions, I had a feeling that may be it should be
upgradeable in a way similar to adding cards with different functions to
computers: Just have the slots on the base rig; if you want to add
something, build the card and plug it in. This would make life easier for
those of us who are not into melting solder, too, provided we can get the
base and the cards ready made.

[Elecraft] DX News and two questions

2006-05-23 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Hi,

Here is some brand new first hand news to Elecrafters.

This year is the 150th anniversary of railways in Turkey. So I am planning
two major events.

One will be to broadcast from Haydar Pasha train station, which is
celebrating its 100th year, with the callsign TC150HP. I hope to be on the
air between 30 May (the day construction began at Haydar Pasha station)
untill 30 June, in my SPARE TIME, whenever that may be.

The other will be from several train stations around the country with the
callsign TC150DD (TCDD is the abbreviation for Turkish Republic State
Railways), between 23 August and 23 September (the day the railways were
first built). In doing this I was wondering whether I could also transmit
from train wagons as a "rail mobile" station. It is obvious I cannot do
this from electric powered trains. However on diesel or steam (if there is
any left around) powered trains, I cannot think of any reason why this
should not be possible. I am sure this must have been tried in earlier
years of HAM radio but I haven't come accross any mentions of it in my
limited HAM life since 1999, the year of the catastrophic earthquake in
Turkey which led me into radio communications. Is it possible at all to
work from a train in motion?

The second question relates to stations in Americas and Oceania. With my
QRP K2 and inverted V dipole setting, I had QSOs with almost all of Europe
(the most difficult of which was with Ireland), North Africa, Middle East,
Eastern Black Sea and many parts of Russia, as well as quite a few stations
(probably big guns) in Japan. However, I have never heard any stations from
Australia, New Zealand, Central America nor Eastern Asia. I have heard one
or two stations from the US (but not from Canada), Indonesia, South Africa
and South America but could not get them to hear my QRP signals over the
pile-up. So, I was wondering if it is at all possible for me to have QSOs
with these countries. I have got a feeling I am either in the air at the
wrong times to hear many of them or that they are just too far away for my
simple setting. Ideas?

BTW, if I can get the "rail mobile" station to work properly, I will
(hopefully) be broadcasting from 9 portable and 9 "rail mobile" locations.
With the addition of a few other TC150xx stations, I have got a feeling I
can turn this into an award setting, where stations contacting say 10 of
these settings will be issued an award. What do you reckon? (Ooops, this
has become the third question .) Is it worth looking for sponsors?

Thanking you in advance for your help.

[Elecraft] Going digital with K2?

2006-05-08 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
While the topic is on HRD, I wouldlike to voice a question I have got on my
mind for a long time:

I have been thinking of going into digital modes, especially RTTY and
PSK31. I have got no experience in ANY digital mode so far and I have been
a Mac only person all these years. Deciding to go into the digital field, I
had to buy a WinTel laptop in the end, since the Mac SW I could find to
work on my historical Macs (newest of which is a G3/300 beige running 8.6)
were practically useless.

Anyway, I did some research on freeware/shareware software available for
WinTels that would also do logging for me. The initial list I came up with
consisted of
Omni-Rig,
XMLog,
WinLog32,
CT,
N1MM,
HRD,
KC4ELO,
EI5DI,
UCXLog,
MM-Hamsoft and
MixW.

Going through their websites for their specifications I decided to chose
either N1MM or HRD. Both seem to do PSK31 and logging without an external
TNC. Both seem to do RTTY via MM-HamSoft's MMTTY Engine. Both seem to be
able to control K2s. However, I would love to hear some first hand
experience on the pros and cons of either (or any other SW that you would
suggest).

[Elecraft] Q: Power reduction in K2

2006-04-10 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
I had written:

>to find it now. Please help.

Many thanks to all who have responded so promptly. I now see that I had to
express myself better.

Glenn ON4WIX, kindly, pointed me to Appendix B of the manual for a
description on how to do this via the hardware.

However, since I am not exactly a builder, I am looking for a way to limit
the power via the menus. P. 94 of the manual shows how to do it for 10 and
12 meters via the secondary menu. I thought there was a way to do it for
other bands as well (again via the menus) but perhaps I am wrong.

[Elecraft] Another powersupply question

2006-03-22 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Reading the differences in ratings I realized I know nothing on how to read
the specs. So, please, you all knowledgeable people, could you give me a
hand in understanding how my powersuplly rates?

I have got a MeanWell SP320-15 switch mode power supply. I found the specs
at <http://www.computronics.com.au/meanwell/sp-320/> after a Google search.
This page specifies it at 15V and 0 to 20.0A at plus or minus 1 %
tolerance, 150mV R&N (whatever that means) and 86% efficiency. However,
after reading all the different industry (and non-industry) standards I got
all confused.

There are some more specs on the page but could not figure out what they mean.

BTW I had mine set to 13.8 V. So, theoretically this should enable more
current to be withdrawn.

The question is how much current this thing can supply for HAM purposes
(including RTTY, PSK31, etc.)?

Thanking you all in advance.

[Elecraft] Lists vs BB's vs Forums

I run one such system on a historical Mac with some very old software.

My BBS runs on a PowerMac 7400 with MacOs 7.61 and Telefinder as the BBS
software.

I am a subscriber to all mailing lists that I am interested in
professionally. I subscribe each list from a different mail address. To
post mailing lists to echo conference areas I run a special utility that
converts e-mail sent to specific mail addresses to the BBS forums. That way
I can keep track of more than 230 separate lists that I subscribe to. The
BBS software handles all the deleting in accordance with the message limits
I have defined for each list.

To run my own mailing lists I use Macjordomo and a SIMS/Communigator as an
SMTP server, running on a PowerMac 7200. Naturally, there is a
corresponding mail address on my BBS that is subscribed to each of mailing
lists. That way, message archives of my lists are created automatically.

I know there are BBS proframs for WinTel machines that do exactly the same
things but I cannot remember their names, since I have been a Mac only
person for the last 18 years (I bought my first ever WinTel laptop this
year so that I can run Ham SW to use with my K2).

If you are interested you can have a read-only access to my BBS with the
user ID Guest and password Guest. You can access it in several ways: 1. By
using its custom client software, which you can download from my site. 2.
By Telnet'ting it on port 1474 or 3. Via its web interface (I do not
remember the exact address and my system seems to be down at this moment)

The address to my server is at my signature.

[Elecraft] FS: Built KX-1 (Repost with reduced price)

2005-12-03 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Hi,

I have got a built Elecraft KX-1 with full acessories (20, 30, 40 m + ATU +
Paddle), which was built by Ruchan Ozatay (TA2AH), plus the nifty manual.

I would like to sell the built rig (plus all manuals, etc.) because I have
bought an Elecraft K2, again from TA2AH, after the KX1. (He has built
himself a K-1 after that.) The KX1 is in excellent condition because it was
used for a very short period of time.

I would like to sell the built KX-1 for US$ 400 + shipping.
Alternatively, I am willing to swap it with an assembled KPA100 kit.

Please let me know if you are interested.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 with MacOS Classic

2005-11-22 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Great info Jack. Thanks for all the input.

I normally use a G3/300 for my daily work. My old Macs (7200 and 7400)
serve as my mail and web servers. I have also got a PB3400 lying around.

The story is this:

I got involved with Ham Radio after the terrible earthquake we experienced
in 1999, as a result of my search and rescue activities. Having grown (!)
to 100 kilos since than, I had to direct my interest to something technical
(like disaster communications), since I cannot go into collapsed buildings
with such a large body.

Seeing a KX-1 made by TA2AH, I thought I found my dream rig, the ultimate
disaster communications transceiver, since all you need is a few batteries
and a piece of wire to communicate with the rest of the world. I took the
exam and upgraded my licence, for the love of the KX-1. However, as things
turned out, I could not proceed with CW after a certain point, because I
could not stop translating everything into the dots and dashes in my mind,
no matter how hard I tried. So, I decided to give it a break for sometime.
Just then, TA2AH sold me his K2, to build himself a K1. Naturally, K2 won
over KX-1, since it has got other abilities on top of CW.

So, I started investigating about other ways of communication, namely the
digital. Because every mode has got different advantages in case of a
disaster (for example you cannot read a long list of needed suplies one by
one on voice, you need some form of digital communication).

Having a surplus PB3400 around, it became the natural choice for this
purpose. Thus the search for the pinouts.

I'll let you know how I proceed.

I must have misexpresed myself. Sorry about that. The Macs do have a serial
port but the connector is not an RS232. I do not know what they are called

Do not worry. I am one of those old generation (!) people who do not move a
finger without reading the manual first. >;-)

Now, as for reading manuals, I have got an interesting case for all of you
to comment on.

Multimode's Documentation starts by saying the following for transmitting
(receiving is via the sound output of the rig):

"If you also want to transmit, you'll need to connect the audio output
(speaker) jack of your Mac to your radio's microphone input jack. You may
need to reduce the audio amplitude using a
potentiometer, or attenuating audio cable. Many have sucessfully usd the
RigBlaster, made by
West Mountain Radio (http://www.westmountainradio.com/)."

Then goes onto describe the procedure for PTT and CW:

"For transmitting, you may want to be able to control your radio's PTT
(Push To Talk) line. A
PTT output is generated from the DTR output of the Mac's serial port. A CW
key output is
generated from the Transmit Data output."

The diagram in the Documentation depicts a little circuit on the line from
Mac's serial port to the CW Key control (and a smilar one to the PTT) such
that:

Mac Serial Port --> Diode (1N4148, etc.) --> 2.2k Resistor --> Transistor
(2N, etc.) -->PTT

The other leg of the Transistor goes to ground. On a diversion from this
line, there is a diode (1N4001, etc) which then connects to the first leg
of the transistor going to the PTT.

[I hope I haven't described it too badly. The diagram is on p4. of
MultiModeDocs.pdf. I tried to attach it to this message but the list does
not accept attachments.]

The documentation describes the way the circuit works as follows:

"When the serial port output goes positive, it biases the transistor, so
the collector can sink
current. The 1N4148 diode protects the transistor when the serial port
output is negative. The
1N4001 protects the transistor against flyback from a relay that might be
lurking in the radio.
A faster diode would probably offer additional protection.
The connection on the Mac end would go to the DTR output line. If you'd
like to use a similar
circuit for CW key control, then it would go to the TxD+ line (or TxD- if
you need to invert the
logic of the output)."

There is no problem as far as this description is concerned. All sounds
logical.

Looking at things from the K2 side, p. 95 of the manual says that I should
have two diodes (one on each line from the dot and dash connections) on the
cables going to the computer, when I connect it in parallel to a paddle.

And it describes the reason as:

"When you connect the keying device in this way, you can continue to use
the paddle as usual. But if the external keying device is keyed, both the
DOT and DASH lines will be pulled low simultaneously, via the diodes. The
K2 firmware interprets this as direct external keying rather than as DOT
and DASH triggers."

This sounds quite logical, too.

However, when you bring the two descriptions together on a single circuit
an interesting case occurs. Now, I am not exactly a techie type person and
learnt electronics just enough to pass the exam BUT AFAIK having diodes on
both ends (i.e. on the computer side as well as the K2 side), each
protecting their own respective device, there will not be any current
flowing.

Am I wrong? Or should I put the circuit together and test it anyway?

Thanks for your help in advance.

having the same preferences then we have got a problem.

>I think most will welcome you here, and the cw / ssb rivalry is all in
>fun (or so it seems to me).

I just hope it is. Otherwise I'd really be disappointed.

>So what antenna(s) are you using with your K2, and what bands are you
>using it most on?

I have got a 4-band inverted-V on 10, 20, 40 and 80 meters about 20 meters
off the ground. I managed to get SWRs less than 1.2 on all bands after
struggling for a few weeks on the roof of our apartment block. It seems it
was worth the trouble.

Although my QTH is blocked by a nearby hill in the East and another nearish
hill in the North, I have worked quite a few countries with less than 8
Watts. (My rig does not go above 7.1 to 7.3 Watts, giving a Hi Cur warning.
I just hope this is normal. Cal Cur is set at 3.5 Ampers)

When I could hear the stations early enough, I have managed to contact a
few Japanese stations, too. When I am little late, my signals get lost in
the pileup. The European DX Net organized by I2ZGC, Gianni helped me make
contact with a few North African stations but I could not hear/get heard by
stations in South Africa nor Indonesia. I sometimes hear a few North
American stations early in the morning but even then they are very weak
most of the time.

I work on 40 and 80 meters at night and 20 meters during the day, mostly. I
could not hear anyone on 10 meters so far. It seems to be very quite in
this part of the world. Perhaps I just wonder around the wrong frequencies
or just at the wrong time. I cannot go in the air very often because of
work load during the week and because of XYL QRM at weekends but I try to
join contests whenever I can. It is great fun.

I am now looking forward to the European QSO Party. If we can manage the
contacts properly, an SSB version might start soon.

Why? Is this a CW-only list? I am not very good in CW and I joined this
list because I think K2 is a great SSB radio. If it is a CW-only place,
then I am sorry for joining in. I'll unsubscribe straight away.

I had a look at MultiMode's documentation and found the info I needed. I
just need to find enough time to work on the diagram now.

Many thanks to all who responded.

Michael,

Thanks for the interesting idea. However, I am a (old type) Mac only person
and I try to stay that way as much as I can. Over the years I ***had to***
learn a few things about WinTels (even then only a FEW things). So,
anything new, including MacOs X, I try to evade as much as possible.

I feel like sticking to Paul's idea and give MultiMod (by Black Cat
Systems) a try.

Do you happen to have the cable pin-out diagram for connecting an old Mac
to a K2?

[Elecraft] K2 with MacOS Classic

2005-11-20 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Hi all,

I have got a PowerMac 3400 (currently running under System 7.6.1) lying
somewhere and I would like to connect it to K2 for logging, using it in
digital modes, etc.

However, I have got two problems:
1. I could not find the cabling diagram.
2. I have got difficulty in figuring out which software to use. Most of
what I could find runs under MacOs X.

Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] FS: Assembled KX-1

2005-11-14 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Hi,

I have got an assembled Elecraft KX-1 with full acessories (20, 30, 40 m +
ATU + Paddle), which was assembled by Ruchan Ozatay (TA2AH).

I would like to sell the assembled rig (plus all manuals, etc.) because I
have bought an Elecraft K2, again from TA2AH, after the KX1. (He has built
himself a K-1 after that.) The KX1 is in excellent condition because it was
used for a very short period of time.

I would like to sell the assembled KX-1 for US$ 450.
Alternatively, I am willing to swap it with an assembled KPA100 kit.

Offers in Europe preferred (because of postage and money transfer costs)
and yes I have contacted qrpproject.de but could not get a response to any
of my mails nor fax.

Please let me know if you are interested.
