Hi,
Sorry to be ignorant, but what exactly is a "parts swapper"?

Tnx

Re: [Elecraft] TVI and More

2021-09-22 Thread Bob Liesen
I find this sage advice. In years past once my neighbors discovered I was
a ham, I was blamed for everything from vacuum cleaners not working to
their kids getting colds. And no, I am NOT exaggerating. In today's world
I can't begin to imagine the "perceived liability" that could result from
these interactions. I don't tell >ANYONE< living near me I am a ham.

Re: [Elecraft] Connectors

2021-07-12 Thread Bob Liesen
Hi gang,
I have been told by several people who are clearly in the know of many
things, that tarnished silver is a >better< conductor than untarnished.
And I have also been told by others just as in the know, that that is a
myth.
 Anyone have definite info?

Re: [Elecraft] Old DOS computers

2021-06-28 Thread Bob Liesen
Well,
I can think of one reason. My Windows 10 laptop takes a full 18 minutes
to boot up from a cold start. I've researched this "feature" and had it in
to 2 repair places and have been told that the only fix is a SSD for $$$.
My old XP machine and even older DOS based machines are up and running in
less than 30 seconds. Indeed they are ancient, and vulnerable to modern
threats, but with proper attention I have been able to avoid any issues.
Certainly, a modern machine is required for some things, but my take is
that as we move forward with computer hardware/OSes, we are actually taking
a few steps back.
BTW, if anyone out there has a solution to the 18 minute cold boot time,
I am all ears.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Questions

2021-04-13 Thread Bob Liesen
Hi Dave,
I don't have those numbers in front of me, but wanted to offer that I
have a KX2 and love it. The learning curve for me was pretty steep in
terms of the menus etc, but YMMV. I run almost exclusively CW, and find it
performs very well in that mode. I would strongly recommend the book that
Elecraft offers for this rig, as it is much more detailed than the basic
user manual.

Re: [Elecraft] Copying CW and Pitch

2021-03-15 Thread Bob Liesen
Hi all,
I too find a lower pitch better as I get older. However, for me,
weighting is >the< factor in ease of copy. Some fists I struggle to copy
at 15 WPM, but when the weighting is just "right", whole words just pop
into my head at most any speed up to ~30 WPM.
I have analyzed with a CPO what meets that criteria, and have concluded
that significantly longer dahs, and shorter spaces between characters is
what is "right". I'm sure my "right" is likely to sound like an
abomination to some others..I'd love to know more about what is going
on in my head vs others under these conditions. "CW and the brain" would
make a great thesis in my view.

Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 with a KX2

2021-03-11 Thread Bob Liesen
Gang,
Well, I solved the no decode problem with my KX2. I was not decoding
much PSK31 because there is not much around to decode. Since I was active
on digital modes, things have evolved (imagine that!). Once I boned up on
the fact that most of the warbling one hears is FT8, and set up a program
for same, I'm decoding lots of signals. I am truly a dinosaur.😕
Thanks to all and stay well!

[Elecraft] PSK31 with a KX2

2021-03-09 Thread Bob Liesen
All,
Pulling my hair out here. I have been trying to get my KX2 to work on
PSK31. After many attempts I got it working perfectly with DigiPan, but
I'm not sure how. Then something happened that I have found is a problem
for me with this radio. I must have turned a knob, hit a key or some such
thing as it stopped decoding. I find the knobs and buttons are too close
to one another for these old eyes and fingers.
I am using DATA A mode, I have the BW at 4kHz and center freq of 1.5 AGC
is off, RF gain is 0dB. NB and NR is off. I suspected I might have
screwed up the USB/LSB setting somehow, but HamScope has a "reverse"
function which does not help.
Is there anyone who could walk me through the settings that might be
screwing this up?
Tnx es 73

[Elecraft] PSK31 with a KX2

2021-03-08 Thread Bob Liesen
Gang,
I am trying to get DigiPan (and other) apps to decode PSK31 from the
phones jack of my KX2. I have tried the DATA A mode as well as normal SSB
mode. I have tried a USB sound card as well as the built in sound card of
my laptop. I can see signals in the waterfall, they look normal. I have
tried reversing the sideband in use. All to no avail. My old TS 430S
decodes perfectly with simple cables hooked up between the radio and
computer, which is leading me to suspect I am missing something with the
KX2.
  Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] Offset when in SSB+CW on a KX2

2021-03-06 Thread Bob Liesen
Hi gang,
Still learning about my KX2. One thing I think I screwed up while
struggling with getting digital mode A set up is the offset when running
SSB+CW mode. I like setting the radio to USB on 20m for instance, and then
using a key for TX. I like the wider RX bandwidth offered in USB on RX.
However, now when I tune in a CW station, and call him, it seems I am
quite a ways off his RX frequency. Any thoughts?

Tnx!
