Yes, I have been reading about that option. I am a bit of a coward in this area, but I'll go there next. May I ask you for help, if I need it? What router did you use internally? I need at least one fixed public ip if that is what they call the external ip. Does the bridge provide that or the downstream router? Brian Brian -- Brian F. [Elecraft] XV50 Alignment Problems
Hi all: I am performing the alignment step that involves peaking the voltage at TP5 by adjusting L12, L13 ... L17. I find that the voltage starts to decline a few seconds after I first key my K2. After I allow a few seconds of cool down, the voltage recovers, but this behavior makes it almost impossible to tell if I have peaked the inductors properly. I also have found that I cannot get more than 15 watts output from the XV50 when driven by 5 watts from the K2. Any suggestions for how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. 73 de Brian W3BW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Off topic: beginner kit recommendations?
Hi Mike: You're in for a lot of fun. My daughter, Zane, who is now 16 built (95% --- I wound the toroids) a K2 at the age of about 12 or 13, including the SSB/160M/60M/DSP/Noise Blanker/100Watt etc. etc. The rig came out great, and it is in regular use. The warm up was an MFJ receiver kit and a couple of little kits from Ramsey --- I think a strobe light and some other small thing. These kids have great vision, nice small fingers, and pretty good focus. Zane and I double-checked every component before she soldered it in, and the basic K-2 was near perfect the first time. Once they learn to solder, everything else comes easily. We worked on it only 2-3 hours a weekend, but it was a great father/daughter experience. Zane would rather build kits than operate them, which is just fine. I get to use the gear! If you are an adept builder, I think there is no reason to shy away from a complicated kit as a first or secong project. Just make sure you're working side-by-side with your son. 73 de Brian W3BW -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mike Markowski Sent: Wednesday, May 11, 2005 15:29 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Off topic: beginner kit recommendations? My 11 year old son KB3KYB has been fascinated by my recent K2 kit building. He has never soldered but is excited about the idea of building a radio of his own. With his birthday coming up this would be the perfect chance to get him a small kit that we could build together. I thought a shortwave receiver with a few bands would be best since it's simpler cheaper. Though I'm also considering a cake tin special, getting the parts to homebrew one of the old tube beginner rigs built on an upside down cake pan. Any ideas would be very welcome. Thanks! RE: [Elecraft] Any K1's or KX1's in West Michigan?
Hi Guys: I live in New York City, but I grew up in Kalamazoo (KN8LOT and K8LOT received in 1958). I built as many Heathkits as my sidewalk-shoveling and lawn-mowing jobs would afford me. To save postage, my Dad would drive me to Benton Harbor to purchase my Heathkits direct from the factory. I have built 2 K2s (fully loaded), a K1 and a KX1, also a 6 meter transverter. All are great fun to build. The K2 is a superior rig, and the KX1 is a superior miniature QRP rig. It surpasses the K1 in performance, in my opinion. I'd recommend the KX1 over the K1 as a first kit. I'd also recommend the internal antenna tuner, the 30M module and the matching mini-paddle. 73 de Brian W3BW -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Paul Bruneau Sent: Friday, April 29, 2005 08:16 To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Any K1's or KX1's in West Michigan? RE: [Elecraft] Question about K2's Q7 and Q8 Final Amp
A question on this subject... I had the same problem, after I installed the 100 watt amp and put everything back together. I solved it with new pads. The only symptom was a failure to develop output power. It was awhile ago. It may be that the thing refused to power-up at all, I just don't remember. There was never any smoke, no loss of the finals. When I loosened the screws holding Q7 and Q8, everything worked. After I replaced the pads, I was able to properly tighten the screws with no problem. I have assumed there is protective circuitry so that a short to ground would not blow anything. Was I just lucky? I don't have the schematics in front of me, so I can't look to see for myself. My K2 lives a few states away. Thanks for any insights. 73 de Brian W3BW -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Terry Bassett Sent: Monday, October 04, 2004 10:39 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Question about K2's Q7 and Q8 Final Amp On Monday 04 October 2004 08:16, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, My K2 has been working fine but I decided to fix it anyway...hi. RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft parts
Do we know that Elecraft wants to be in this business? I have assumed this was a service they provided as an accommodation to their customers. And, they certainly provide superb service in every regard. My thought has been that I would prefer to source parts elsewhere before I bother Elecraft with a request. If, in fact, Elecraft would NOT like to be the first place one turns to for parts, they could facilitate that by providing listings on their websites of the correct catalogue numbers for Mouser, Digi-Key, and others. If Elecraft DOES wish to be in the replacement parts business, then there is no reason for them to provide that information. 73 de Brian W3BW -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Don Wilhelm Sent: Monday, August 09, 2004 10:40 PM To: Elecraft Discussion List Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft parts Folks, I too agree - Ordering parts from Elecraft is not only easy, but you do receive personalized service too - Scott and Richard do a fantastic job, part numbers help a lot to avoid ambiguities, but they are available and receptive with information about a particular part should the part number not be readily available, one will not find that level of service at Mouser. [Elecraft] K2 Multiple Birdies Suddenly Appeared. Help!
Hi Guys: I had my K2 (S/N 2528) opened up to replace the thermal pads on Q7 and Q8. This was in the aftermath of installing the KPA100 option. Everything worked fine for a few weeks after installing the KPA100, but I needed to change out the pads as the old ones had gotten threadbare. I am pretty sure I didn't have this problem before I did that, but I am not 100% positive. Suddenly, I have birdies all over the place, on almost every band, and spaced out across the bands. The birdie is clearly associated with the KIO2 interface that is part of the KPA100. When I unplug the digital cable either from the PC or from the back of the K-2, the birdies disappear. However, I still have the birdies even if I shut down the PC, another PC in the shack, and both monitors. I have them when I move to battery power. I have tried shutting down everything in the area, with no change. I tried placing rf suppressing toroids and split rings on the line to the PC with no effect. I have changed COM ports with no success. Unplugging the KAT100 makes no difference. The birdies are at times steady and at times pulsating --- whoop whoop whoop --- about 2 per second. The pattern can change based on what I am doing on the PC. But, the birdies are there with the PC totally shut down, monitor as well. If not I wouldn't worry about it. You are mainly looking for gross errors like very low readings or shorts. Some DVM ohms ranges will turn on semiconductors in the circuits and that will give the effect of a lower than expected reading. RE: [Elecraft] Mouser Part # Needed
I wonder if one day the folks at Elecraft might publish a list of Mouser (or other supplier) catalog parts numbers for all the parts in the Elecraft lineup of kits. This would probably reduce the burden they face supplying replacement parts to the Elecraft buffs. Mouser provides extremely rapid service, even overnight if you're willing to pay for it. Just a thought... de Brian W3BW -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Carl J. [Elecraft] Are matched XTALS needed for new K-2, KSB2
Hi all: I have on order, due any day, my second K-2. I ordered it with the 100watt amp and the SSB board. In looking at all the mod kits --- which I needed for my first K-2 (S/N 2528), I see that the matched XTAL sets for the K-2 and the KSB2 do not carry the notation supplied will all K-2s... of recent vintage. Do I need to order these separately in order to have the best possible performance, or are the K-2s and KSB2s now coming with appropriately matched sets of XTALs? [Elecraft] KPA-100 Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4 screws to heat simk question
Hi all: I am just nearing completion of the 100W upgrade to my K2. I am unable to get the 1/4 4-40 pan head screws to reach far enough through the board to catch the threads in the heat sink UNLESS I leave off the lock washers. Without the lockwashers, everything seems to fit perfectly. I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice on this. Thanks. 73 de Brian W3BW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
