[Elecraft] [KX3][KXPA100] How far apart can the amp be from the radio?

I'm thinking of a mobile installation with the amp in the trunk.

Would this work? What requirements need to be met?

I like the fact that the K3 is now the one to beat.

Also, I think this isn't so much directed at current K3 owners (we know
better), but at those that might consider moving to the K3 from the
Yeacomwood lines. Also, as they don't sell K3s, it makes a comparison it
claims is favorable without upsetting their suppliers.

I assume you mean in something like IE or Firefox. Look for a Skype icon in
the application you are using, clicking it should toggle this feature. You
can try to hover over it with the mouse first, it just might tell you what
will happen if you click it.

They have a Hoover-trap built into their pages with a link which

Anyway, is there any advantage to a switching power supply (with a fan) vs a
linear supply (with no fan) other than the size and weight?

 Jack, AE6GC

Properly designed and manufactured, switching power supplies can be more
efficient ( 70-80 %) than linear power supplies (~50%). For a given
load, they should use less power and run cooler.

The issue to be considered is the EMI produced by the switching power
supply. Some are good and others aren't. It depends on the model and
the installation.

As to the noise the fan makes, you might have to try it to see. There
are some very quiet fans in use these days. Are you going to have a
computer in the shack? If so, its fan(s) is likely to be louder than
the one in the switching power supply.

Re: [Elecraft] ESSB- What About Pactor III?

2007-08-13 Thread Clark B. Wierda
I'm sure that will change now that it has been mentioned.

As the elecraft community are largely builders and experimenters, the
closed aspect of Pactor-III doesn't generate the interest that would
otherwise drive the discussion. As a protocol, Pactor-III is trying to
increase the throughput of a data transfer and it is reasonably successful
under the right conditions. The usefulness versus the cost in bandwidth
is another issue.

The bigger problem is WinLink 2000 and how it is used. Proper amateur
practice requires monitoring the signal to ensure you are not interfering
with existing communication. The issue arrises from the WinLink operators
who fire up radio connected to the computer and let it go. Frequently,
they aren't even listening and WinLink cannot hear anything that isn't
another WinLink end-point. Everything else is noise which WinLink
addresses by retrying until it succeeds.

Similarly, if the widebanders were only using their capability when they
weren't impacting others, there wouldn't be the strong response.

My experience is quite opposite from what has been mentioned.

I've had multiple failures of the Molex connector. The only APP failure I
had was crib death of a cable made with the plier type crimper. Jump
kit includes the ratchet crimper and a couple bags of spare assemblies. I
also carry spare fuses of all the sizes used in my RigRunners.

Finally, I'm replacing the Molex connector on the back of my IC706 with a
set of APPs because of my problems and the fact that mount for the Molex
on the radio has failed and the connector is now hanging loose.

Our effort was a 100W effort. The transmitter used was the normal
transmitter for one of the four stations. Therefore, using 100W from

bonus is invalid?

The original comment was a clarification of the statment about the
Alternative Power bonus which is not limited to 5W. I additionally
commented that I would like to see Battery allow all battery efforts at
any power level using the exiting power level bonus structure. This
change in the focus of the message is why I changed the subject.

Just a clarification.

While the Battery subclass is limited to 5W, the Alternative Power Bonus
is not. We were running 100W on Battery for one of our stations using
Solar Panels as the power source.

I also agree that the Battery subclass should allow more power. There
would still be the QRP power multiplier to account for the power level.
My club might be willing to go to all battery, but would not be willing to
give up 13db.

I'm for recognizing the additional effort to do an all battery FD with the
Battery subclass. I don't think we should then penalize them by
restricting the power they can use. The effort required for Battery is
strongly related to the power level. If an organization wants to go to
the additional effort to run 100W on battery for Field Day, they should be
allowed to so so. Just have them get the normal multiplier for the level
they run.

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day at Home

2006-06-25 Thread Clark B. Wierda
Kevin,

I'm glad to hear you operated FD this weekend.

I read your earlier message and was concerned, but didn't know what to
say. We would have been glad to have your as part of our effort. We ran
2 SSB, 2 CW, and the GOTA and VHF+ stations that can go with this. I've
been very happy with the local club and their FD operation. This was my
first time with them since 2003 which was my first FD (I headed the GOTA
effort that year). Military obligations had me in Hawaii for the 2004
operation and Ohio last year. I was able to find clubs to operate with in
both cases. The hour I ran one of the stations in KH6 was my first
experience under a pileup. I think I ran more QSOs in that hour than I
had in my log at home after a year.

When I was first licensed about 20 years ago, my elmer (W5NK) demonstrated
operating techniques by having me watch him do a few QSOs as 1E (he ran
from a battery). I didn't operate a FD until 2003. I was really looking
forward to it and had a blast. This was also quite necessary as I didn't
get a HF radio until 6 month later. And I only been really active for the
last six months. Before that, I did a limited effort in contests and many
Public Service events. I also did a deployment to Mississippi in the
aftermath of Katrina.

Sorry for the long winded response. My points are:

1. I'm glad to hear you operated (I'm sorry I don't yet have the skill to
work you.)

2. Find another group. A club can be a great source of support and ideas.
I probably wouldn't be as active without the local club.

3. There is room for solo and group operations. I respectfully disagree
with those suggesting avoiding groups.

4. I have a K1 and look forward to working you on the ECN.

Re: [Elecraft] Buddipole on 2m?

2006-05-05 Thread Clark B. Wierda
I've used the Buddipole quite successfully on 2M.

First was for a century (100 mile) bide ride we do here in Michigan. This
usage is at the far end of the course and over a ridge fro the repeater we
use for the event. The second time I used the Buddipole on 2M was after
Katrina on the Gulf coast. There we had a simplex net (no repeaters)
covering Jackson county, MS.

I use the 16 foot mast and an extra whip with the VeraTee. I wire the
horizontal whips together as the ground plane (sometimes I angle them down
at 45 degrees).

I am considering purchasing a buddipole from elecraft for portable hf
use. This weekend I need to set up a 2m base station to provide
communications for a local bicycle race. The buddipole literature
indicates that it works from 2meters through hf. Has anyone tried to
use the buddipole for 2 meter repeater work. I'm assuming I will need
to orient the buddipole near vertically or otherwise to achieve vertical
polarization. My real reason for wanting a buddipole is for travel with
my KX-1, or field use with the K2/100, but if it will solve the
immediate problem, it may get me moving to make the purchase!

Re: [Elecraft] Off topic question

The test test suggests a contest CQ. Probably from a automatic keyer or
a contest logging program. Some contesters just letem rip until they hear
a response through the keying.

There was a 160M CW contest over the weekend, so that was probably from that.

A friend asked me yesterday if I knew why hams would be sending the
 following

Cq cq callsign callsign test test

In cw over and over and over again I told him I did not, I could not
find anything on the internet about it so I thought I would ask the most
august body of hams for information. The signals where heard around
12:00 am midnight on 160m anyone know what was going on? Or why?
