Re: [Elecraft] rather provocative advert from Kenwood
I like the fact that the K3 is now "the one to beat". Also, I think this isn't so much directed at current K3 owners (we know better), but at those that might consider moving to the K3 from the Yeacomwood lines. Also, as they don't sell K3s, it makes a comparison it claims is favorable without upsetting their suppliers. 73, Clark N8CBW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The prefetch is what is getting you. They have a "Hoover-trap" built into their pages with a link which MUST_NOT_BE_FOLLOWED. For a given load, they should use less power and run cooler. The issue to be considered is the EMI produced by the switching power supply. Some are good and others aren't. It depends on the model and the installation. As to the noise the fan makes, you might have to try it to see. There are some very quiet fans in use these days. Re: [Elecraft] ESSB- What About Pactor III?
I'm sure that will change now that it has been mentioned. As the elecraft community are largely builders and experimenters, the closed aspect of Pactor-III doesn't generate the interest that would otherwise drive the discussion. As a protocol, Pactor-III is trying to increase the throughput of a data transfer and it is reasonably successful under the right conditions. The usefulness versus the cost in bandwidth is another issue. The bigger problem is WinLink 2000 and how it is used. Proper amateur practice requires monitoring the signal to ensure you are not interfering with existing communication. The issue arrises from the WinLink operators who fire up radio connected to the computer and let it go. Frequently, they aren't even listening and WinLink cannot "hear" anything that isn't another WinLink end-point. Everything else is "noise" which WinLink addresses by retrying until it succeeds. Similarly, if the widebanders were only using their capability when they weren't impacting others, there wouldn't be the strong response. -- Clark B. Re: [Elecraft] bad choice: Anderson PowePole connectors
My experience is quite opposite from what has been mentioned. I've had multiple failures of the Molex connector. The only APP failure I had was crib death of a cable made with the "plier" type crimper. Jump kit includes the ratchet crimper and a couple bags of spare assemblies. I also carry spare fuses of all the sizes used in my RigRunners. Finally, I'm replacing the Molex connector on the back of my IC706 with a set of APPs because of my problems and the fact that mount for the Molex on the radio has failed and the connector is now hanging loose. 73, -- Clark B. I'm sure you will get other responses, but here are my thoughts: If you have the time, definitely do FDIM. It is fantastic. The hotel (been there the last two years) is good and the staff is very supportive of us. The Hamvention website will have a list of events, forums, and seminars as we get closer to May. Take a look at that when it is available and see what you are interested in from the list. RE: [Elecraft] FD Battery rules (was QRP Power Level?)
Our effort was a 100W effort. The transmitter used was the normal transmitter for one of the four stations. Therefore, using 100W from solar is legal. I never implied anything else. Are you saying our solar bonus is invalid? The original comment was a clarification of the statment about the Alternative Power bonus which is not limited to 5W. I additionally commented that I would like to see Battery allow all battery efforts at any power level using the exiting power level bonus structure. Re: [Elecraft] FD Battery rules (was QRP Power Level?)
Just a clarification. While the Battery subclass is limited to 5W, the Alternative Power Bonus is not. We were running 100W on Battery for one of our stations using Solar Panels as the power source. I also agree that the Battery subclass should allow more power. There would still be the QRP power multiplier to account for the power level. My club might be willing to go to all battery, but would not be willing to give up 13db. I'm for recognizing the additional effort to do an all battery FD with the Battery subclass. I don't think we should then penalize them by restricting the power they can use. The effort required for Battery is strongly related to the power level. If an organization wants to go to the additional effort to run 100W on battery for Field Day, they should be allowed to so so. Just have them get the normal multiplier for the level they run. -- Clark B. Wierda N8CBW

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day at Home
Kevin, I'm glad to hear you operated FD this weekend. I read your earlier message and was concerned, but didn't know what to say. We would have been glad to have your as part of our effort. We ran 2 SSB, 2 CW, and the GOTA and VHF+ stations that can go with this. I've been very happy with the local club and their FD operation. This was my first time with them since 2003 which was my first FD (I headed the GOTA effort that year). Military obligations had me in Hawaii for the 2004 operation and Ohio last year. I was able to find clubs to operate with in both cases. The hour I ran one of the stations in KH6 was my first experience under a pileup. I think I ran more QSOs in that hour than I had in my log at home after a year. When I was first licensed about 20 years ago, my elmer (W5NK) demonstrated operating techniques by having me watch him do a few QSOs as 1E (he ran from a battery). I didn't operate a FD until 2003. I was really looking forward to it and had a blast. This was also quite necessary as I didn't get a HF radio until 6 month later. And I only been really active for the last six months. Before that, I did a limited effort in contests and many Public Service events. I also did a deployment to Mississippi in the aftermath of Katrina. Sorry for the long winded response. My points are: 1. I'm glad to hear you operated (I'm sorry I don't yet have the skill to work you.) 2. Find another group. A club can be a great source of support and ideas. I probably wouldn't be as active without the local club. 3. There is room for solo and group operations. I respectfully disagree with those suggesting avoiding groups. 4. I have a K1 and look forward to working you on the ECN. 73, -- Clark B. I've used the Buddipole quite successfully on 2M. First was for a century (100 mile) bide ride we do here in Michigan. This usage is at the far end of the course and over a ridge fro the repeater we use for the event. The second time I used the Buddipole on 2M was after Katrina on the Gulf coast. There we had a simplex net (no repeaters) covering Jackson county, MS. I use the 16 foot mast and an extra whip with the VeraTee.
