Hi Phil: You will really enjoy your new amplifier. It integrates very well with the rest of the K-line. This one reflector covers all the Elecraft equipment and to make things easy for folks to presort messages, you are requested to put the equipment type (KPA500 for eg) in the subject line. I've been using my KPA500 (and the rest of the K-line) with a 3el SteppIR since the KPA arrived in Aug/11. The station (K3 P3) also includes a microKeyer II with a special cable from microHam that goes from the mK (ilink connector) to the SteppIR (data out connector). It inhibits Tx in the K3 while the SteppIR is tuning. I think N8LP also has a unit that will perform the same inhibit while tuning function - check his website. www.telepostinc.com 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: Phil Irons ve1...@gmail.com To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, March 17, 2013 2:53 PM Subject: [Elecraft] A newbie writes Hi there... Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Peculiar behavior : no power output on Operate
Hi Alessandro: I've been using a KPA500 for over a year now with my K3 / P3 equipment and not experienced the problem you described. In my case, I leave the rear panel switch On anytime I'm in the ham shack and then if I need to use the KPA500, I turn On the front panel switch - wait about 5 to 10 sec and then flip it to operate and its ready to transmit. Perhaps, someone from Elecraft could comment on whether there is a mandatory wait time between turning On the rear panel switch and turning On the front panel switch (either in standby or operate) in order to allow the internal processor time to properly initialize. 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: iw0hqe alexme...@gmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, October 22, 2012 9:14 AM Subject: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Peculiar behavior : no power output on Operate Hi, this is IW0HQE, Alessandro, from Italy, a very happy owner of the superb K-line. I would like to report what I consider a minor issue/behavior of my KPA500 power amplifier. The amplifier is working flawlessly, and I am definately very satisfied with it. Only a very peculiar event happened a couple of times during the last week : when I turned on the amplifier and put it on Oper mode, when I begun my transmission the PTT triggered correctly (the * symbol appeared as well in the leftmost part of the display) but there was no power output at all. This was solved by simpli turning the amp OFF and then back online. I will now describe the event with further details : 1) I have owned the amplifier since 18/09/2012 (one month) and the event happened only two times during the last week. 2) The first time the event happened was right after my last K3 and P3 firmware upgrades. After upgrading both the devices, I then turned on the KPA500 to work a DX station and there was no power output; turning OFF and then back ON the amp solved it. 3) The second time the event happened was a couple of days later : I was listening to some DX stations and pileups for fun, then I needed the amplifier to make a few calls, I turned ON the rear panel switch, put the amp on OPER and then begun transmitting, but still no power output. Turning the amp OFF and then ON solved it. 4) Both times the event happened, the rear panel switch was turned ON from the OFF position. 5) Power drive 20 watts. CW mode. 6) Temperature reading at the moment of the event : 22-23 °C. 7) SWR of my antenna on the band (15 meters the first time and 10 meters the second time) 1,3:1 or better. 8) HV : 74,3 9) Both the events happened after installation of Firmware Revision 04.51 and DSP 2.76. 10) I tried to turn off the amplifier after the second event without switching the real panel button in the OFF position, and the event never happened again. I cannot figure out if this is just a coincidence, but maybe it could be of some use to report it. I have seen this event, or some that have a strong resemblance have already been reported : http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA-500-no-RF-until-power-cycle-td7017734.html http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-No-power-out-in-quot-OPER-quot-mode-td7472228.html I have reported mine also, as suggested by W6FB, Jack Brindle, so that Elecraft could add this to the feedbacks already received, evaluate and (I hope) find out and solve this minor issue. Thank you for your attention. My very best regards. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY
Hi Joe: I've had a problem similar to your #1 for over a year now. In my case while running FSK the K3 (Ser 2432) would switch from 45 to 75 baud all by itself in the middle of the contest - it may have been after a band or large frequency change, I don't remember now. I also had a problem with the K3 remembering the custom settings for the Filter Presets I II. They seemed to be lost following a power on/off cycle. The last time I checked with Support I was told that Wayne was aware of one or both of these and would be working on them once the design work on the KX3 was completed. I haven't checked lately so don't know the current status. As to your problem #2, I haven't seen any of that since I'm running FSK rather than AFSK. 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: Joe K2UF j...@k2uf.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, October 01, 2012 3:09 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY I had the following two problems during the RTTY contest this past weekend. 1.- I had to reset the mode from FSK D to AFSK A many times. Usually when I changed bands or a large change in frequency within the same band. When I get to the top of the band and want to go back to the bottom of the band I would type the frequency in N1MM. Radio would QSY to the new frequency but the mode would revert back to FSK D. This would not happen every time but quite often. 2.- Using the K3 / KPA500 setup with N1MM running on a Win XP desktop pc with a soundMAX sound card. The K3 running about 25 watts and the LINE IN level set at 10 the KPA500 power out would start at about 60 to 70 watts. Each time I would call/work someone the power out on the KPA500 would increase. After 8 or 10 calls/Qs the power would be up to 400 to 500 watts. If I changed the power level on the K3 down 1 watt and then back up 1 watt the process would start all over again. I do not have the same problem on CW. I have not used the amp in a CW contest yet, but I have worked several DXpeditions/DX stations sometimes calling for over an hour. The amp output would stay where it was set. I have looked over the K3 manual and could not find any hints about problem 1. Problem 2 is a real puzzler. Anyone have any ideas? Hi Brian: I haven't been on RTTY too much recently so the problem hasn't occured for some time. That being said, I'm going to see if I can pin things down a bit and report back. How do you know it's the K3 and not the logging program. Or some other piece of hardware doing interfacing? Could RFI be a cause? You don't say what your setup for RTTY is. I'm been running RTTY contests with the K3 for years using a hardware TNC in FSK. At times we've been up to 1500 watts. I've never seen this first problem despite being mostly SP with lots of band and large freq changes. I've only been bit by the 75 baud problem once. That was when 75 baud was introduced in firmware and became the default. After fixing that once, it has never been seen again. Then again, maybe I've just been lucky. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 10/1/2012 20:54, D Joyce wrote: Hi Joe: I've had a problem similar to your #1 for over a year now. Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 and KPA500
Hi Reto: I have been working on a K3/0 to a K3/100 + KPA500 system with a friend of mine and have an alternative suggestion for remote control of the KPA500 that may work for you. Recall that the K3-Remote Owner's Manual Rev A, pg 15, has a section Controlling a Remote KPA500 from the Local Site; however, it requires modification of the K3 to KPA500 Cable and also impacts use of the PR6 preamp - all as discussed in the email from Brandon KG6YPI this morning.. Since I have a Dell D830 Notebook in the Local shack for control of the RemoteRig RRC1258 units and for rotor and remote switching / control using the MicroBit 1216 H and L units, I also use that Notebook computer for (a) running RTTY (FSK) Tx mode (more about Rx later) using MMTTY and also (b) for remote control monitoring of the KPA500 using the KPA500 Util. Note that when the Program mode 14 = K3 Twin is set in the Radio Settings of the Control and Radio RRC (see pg 43 - 45 of the RRC User Manual, Rev A25), then Com1 is available as a transparent serial channel between the Control RRC and the Radio RRC over the internet (see pg 49). I use this Com1 channel for the KPA500 Util and get full functional control of the KPA500. The problem in getting it to work was resolved (by Brendon at Elecraft) with the addition of a null modem adapter in the serial line between the Com1 connector on the Radio RRC and the RS232 (PC) connector on the KPA500. You also need to set the Com1 Serial settings to Mode-3 and the baud rate to 38400 on both the Control and Radio RRC's. Also in the Control RRC, if you are going to use the USB port for RTTY, as I did, then you will want to set the Use USB Com Port as COM1 to NO. For dual RTTY Rx, since the K3/100 includes the SubRx, I route both Main and SubRx audio from the Control RRC Speaker (SP) to the AF Line input on an old IBM PIII-600 (running two instances of MMTTY) through a pair of Timewave DSP-9+ units. (I used the 2nd computer since the Dell notebook didn't have dual channel Line input and the DSP-9+ units provide separate adjustable speaker output for monitoring purposes.) I have wiring block diagrams - if any one is interested just send me an email to d_jo...@sympatico.ca Hope you find this useful. 73, Doug Joyce VE3MV - Original Message - From: hb9trt r...@starnet.ch To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2012 7:22 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3/0 and KPA500 Hi I try to connect the KPA500 with the Y-cable to the K3/100 (local) and would like to use it with the K3/0 (remote). Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 and KPA500
Hi Reto: a couple of points 1. No computer is necessary at the Remote / Radio site where the K3/100 and KPA500 are located. Only need one at the Control / Local site (where most hams would have one anyway). 2. A regular serial cable is used at the Conrol / Local site between the Control RRC Com1 and the related Serial port on the local Computer. However a null modem cable is needed at the Remote / Radio site between the Radio RRC Com1 and the KPA500 RS232(PC) connector. 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: hb9trt r...@starnet.ch To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2012 2:01 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 and KPA500 Hi Doug Thanks for the alternate solution to control the KPA with a remote computer. So if I understand this right, the rig set devices supports transparent RS232 communication through the internet on the COM1 interface? This sounds also very interesting for office use, where a computer is on the table :-) Is a nullmodem cable necessary between the KPA500 RS232 and COM1 on the rig set device? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter setting changing with modes and LP pan software
GM Keith: Notwithstanding Joe's comments related to Na3p, I've noticed a K3 software memory problem which may or may not be related. There seems to be two instances of when the K3 appears to loose its mind. (BTW its s/n 2432 using 4.47 and 2.73 FW.) 1st is when I've set up the Norm I and II for specific settings in CW and SSB modes and as I cycle through various bands and / or power cycles, it may or may not return the the Fltr width that I had set for Norm I and Norm II. I can't tie the problem down to a specific sequence of key strokes. At one time I thought it appeared more in CW and SSB modes rather than Data (FSK D), but now I'm not sure. 2nd is when operating FSK D and set for 45 baud, it will (for no good reason that I can find) change to 75 baud. The only indication is that RTTY copy is now garbled. If I go in and change it back to 45 baud, then things are ok for a while - but I don't know for how long. It happened 4 times during the recent ARRL RTTY RU contest. I've related this to K3 Support and was told that it was a known problem and was on Wayne's list. He has been somewhat busy lately with the new KX3 so it hasn't worked its way to the top. 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: Keith Heimbold ag...@hotmail.com To: Elecraft Group elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2012 10:17 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Filter setting changing with modes and LP pan software I have been noticing that sometimes if I cycle through the modes on the K3 from USB back through to USB (including cw, data, AM, FM and back to USB) or turn on either Power SDR or Na3p my filter settings change and sometimes considerably. This can happen if I stay within the same band or when I change bands. It does not usually bother me too much but it is starting to concern me a little. One way of getting at this would be for me to know how the K3 would compare performance-wise (especially audio performance-wise) to some of the more popular SW receivers, e.g. the Drake R8 series, the Icom R-75, etc., or to other transceivers lauded for their receive audio performance (e.g., the old Kenwood TS-870). Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Audio Thru External DSP
GM Jim and Merry Christmas Yes I'm using a pair of TimeWave units between the K3 line output and the microKeyer II primarily for dual channel RTTY operation. Both of these units provide an adjustable dual channel passband which can be centered on the standard tone pair frequencies. Specifically the Main Rx audio goes from the Tip on the K3 Line output to the Line input on a DSP-599ZX and then from the DSP-599ZX Line output to the audio cable labeled line out on the K3R cable going to the microKeyer II. I'm also running a cable from the DSP-599ZX speaker output to a small 2 mini speaker to be able to separately monitor the main channel audio. Then for the subRx audio, I take the signal from the Ring on the K3 Line output to the Audio Input on the DSP-59+ and from from the DSP-59+ Line Output to the Tip on the audio connector on the microKeyer II labeled Sub Rx. I had the TimeWave units and decided to hook them up this way to provide independent control of the two audio channels for dual RTTY operation. I'm using MMTTY within DX4Win for the main channel and I open a separate instance of MMTTY for the subreceiver audio. This setup works very well for RTTY DX'ng and has resulted in being able to spot stations very quickly and work the DX. 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: Jim Harris jim.w...@yahoo.com To: Elecraft Email elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, December 24, 2011 5:08 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Audio Thru External DSP Hi to the group and Merry Christmas Has anyone used an external DSP (noise reduction) between the output of the K3 and a computer sound card? [Elecraft] K3-Twin with Remoterig
Folks: Following Eric's announcement last Friday, I setup a K3/10 as the local and the K3/100 as the remote along with a KPA-500, made up the one new E3c keying cable for the remote / radio site and have been trying things out since Monday night. Still running things over my local LAN, but for the most part things work very slick. I still have some things to configure properly and a few settings I don't fully understand. Perhaps some of those who were able to work with the pre-Beta versions for a few weeks would explain a couple of things for me. 1. It's not obvious how the KPA-500 fits into this control system. In the previous (non-twin) approach, I used the KPA-500 Utility through the free Com1 channel of the RRC-1258 to turn the KPA-500 on / off and to monitor power and other performance parameters. Is it still the intention to use the KPA Utility with this new Program mode 14 approach or is there another way? Would appreciate some further details. 2. It's not clear how the audio and rf gain settings on the two K3s should be set. Seems that the settings on the remote K3 override whatever has been set on the local K3. So my settings at the moment are to have rf gain set at full CW for both main and sub on both K3s, to have AF gain on the remote K3 set at 12 o'clock for both main and sub and then use the audio controls on the local K3 for final admjustments. BTW I'm running the two channels of AF output from the local RRC to a pair of Timewave DSP-9+ units which feed separate speakers and the line outputs go to an old IBM PIII-600 running XP SP3 with two instances of MMTTY. 3. The Microbit setup Mgr v1.10 ( I couldn't get v1.12 to load - a Windows problem) sets up four virtual Com ports (see pg 75 of the new rev A17 RRC manual) Com 0, 1, 2 and FSK. I have the new ComFSK port working for FSK keying but I'm not sure how to configure for eg DX4Win to make use of Com 0, 1 2. Further details would be helpful. [Elecraft] W2 and use with computer
GA: Perhaps someone here can clarify something regarding the serial computer interface with the W2. I want to use the W2 in a remote station installation to sense output power and tell me whether or not the KPA500 has been turned On. To do this I plan to run the serial line from the W2 thru the Com1 transparent serial channel in a pair of RemoteRig RRC-1258MkIIs units. The computer at the control site will be running the W2 Ver 1.1.9.6 software. (There is no computer at the remote site where the K3 KPA500 are located.) Momentary switch closures to turn the K3 and KPA-500 ON will be provided by the remote switch capability of the MicroBit 1216H Web switch units. Confirmation of the K3 being ON is provided by receive audio, but I need a power sensor to confirm that the KPA-500 has been turned ON and is actually transmitting. Could someone provide confirmation that the power output level is automatically displayed by the W2 software anytime power output is displayed on the LEDs of the W2 unit itself. What got me concerned is the explanation in the top paragraph of the Elecraft W2 Serial Interface Commands document Rev D. It says in part The W2 responds to commands for data supplied by the external system. Nothing is sent until a command is received by the W2. I've had a LP-100A for a couple of years and tried to use it but it requires a serial line bit rate of 115,200 baud whereas the RRC unit can only go up to 57,600. It looks like the W2 will be the answer since its bit rate is only 9600 baud. Changing bands from either the K3 or the Amp doesn't change OPER to STBY or STBY to OPER. I've set the STBY power level to be 5 W and the OPER power level to be 125W (approx 8 W from the K3) on all bands (all in CW mode). Then regardless of which unit is used to change bands and whether the Amp is in OPER or STBY the power levels are as just indicated. It works as expected. What doesn't work is setting the KPA500 MENU: BAND CHG to STBY and expecting that the power out from the K3 will reliably switch to higher power whenever the amp is in STANDBY mode, both whether invoked by the button on the amp or by simply changing bands on the K3, and then reliably dropping to an appropriate lower level whenever the amp is put in OPERATE mode by tapping the operate/standby button on the amp. Whew! I got it all into one sentence. With 300+ KPA500s out there, am I the only one to observe this? Come on guys, can't anyone test this for me with their setup? How about it W4TV? 73, John, W2GW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control
Just to bring everyone up to date on the problem I reported last evening - doing the K3 Config:Power Set -- per band (as suggested by Ken K3IU) fixed the problem. Band control works from either the K3 or the KPA500 and K3 power settings are rememberd for all bands. Works slick. 73, Doug - Original Message - From: D Joyce d_jo...@sympatico.ca To: Elecraft List elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, August 12, 2011 11:41 PM Subject: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control Group: I'm checking out a recently completed KPA500 (#234) running FW V1.11 with a K3/10 running FW Ver 4.36. The K3/100 with which it will eventually be used is otherwise tied up and I wanted to confirm the the per-band power control feature when used with the K3. (I'm using the AUX interface cable.) It doesn't seem to work as described in the KPA500 Owner's Manual Rev B - see page 9 Item 4 under Transmitting. If I put the Amp in Standby and set the K3 for 5 W as a low power level and then turn the Amp to Operate and run the K3 up to a drive level of about 8 W to produce about 100 Watts from the KPA500, then when I turn the Amp back to Standby the power level is 8 W not 5W. Perhaps the per-band power control is dependent on using a K3/100 not a K3/10. Anyone else seeing the same thing? 73, Doug VE3MV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
