Re: [Elecraft] K3 Powers Off On Its Own

2023-09-15 Thread David Hachadorian
On one of my K3's the Powerpole receptacle got flaky. Turn the radio on,
and then wiggle the plug  to see if it drops out.  I resoldered where
the receptacle pins mate with the circuit board inside, but I still had
to use a tie-wrap to hold the plug in a certain position.  I'll fix it
the right way one of these years.

Good luck!

Earlier this week my K3 shut itself off while it was in receive mode. It

had just finished a 15 minute QSO. The Tx power was 10 watts.

When I tried to turn it on again, the display briefly flashed for a few
seconds and I could hear a slight buzzing sound from within the chassis and
it went off. I waited for a short time and tried again. The K3 display
flashed for a few seconds along with the buzzing, but would not stay
powered. I tried this one more time, but the display flashed very briefly,
buzzed and then off again.

This morning I could power on the K3, but I didn't let it run very long
before I powered it off. It would seem this is some sort of heat-related
issue.

It's serial number 2826, but it's had several mods over the years including
the upgrade on the receiver.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Anyone know?

Might I be better off going for a dynamic mic rather than an electret?

I know there are $300-$500 broadcast headsets (Beyer, Audio Technica,

There are LOTS of headphones that sound great, have outstanding performance
both in their speakers and microphone. But, they make you feel like your
head is in a vice after just a few hours of wear. If the headphone is
uncomfortable, then no matter what its other characteristics are, they will be
thrown in the trash.
The CM-500 happens to be one of the most comfortable headset for long-term wear
(many of us feel that way). Many others (some mentioned in this discussion)
don’t come close. I also have a pair of the KOSS version of this headset. It is
back in its box - wearing it is very uncomfortable for me. Like others, I have
tried many
different headphones put out by many companies. This past weekend, for NAQP CW,
the CM-500s were on my head for 10 hours. With the CM-500s out of production,
I’m not sure what I will turn to when these wear out. I do know that none of
the computer gaming headsets I have tried fit the bill. And I had the privilege
of trying out
many of the headsets from a major gaming device company I worked for as a

Now, before you put down others, find out what their requirements really are.

Comfort depends strongly on the head of the wearer. I tried on a set

seeing/hearing posts like this. On both occasions I found them to be
an instrument of torture.

By contrast, the Yamaha CM500 headset is VERY comfortable -- I've worn
mine for long contest weekends with no fatigue, and both phones and
mic sound great. With the right TXEQ, audio is super competitive, is
easy to listen to and cuts through noise and QRM. The headset plugs
straight into the rear panel of both a K3 and a K4, (turn on bias,
because mic is an electret). Most of us program PF2 to toggle the
speaker on and off (go to the menu for that function and push PF2).
With the right cable adapter, it also works great with a KX3.

The only shortcoming of the Yamaha headset is it's somewhat light
construction -- I'm super clumsy, am always knocking the headset on
the floor, which has broken the cable. But at $60 or so compared 4-6
times that cost for ham specialty headsets that are no better, it's
cheap.

[Elecraft] K3, using AM Mode RX with 250 Hz filter

2023-04-14 Thread David Hachadorian
For an upcoming Frequency Measurement Test, I'm trying to use a K3  in
AM Mode RX-only with a 250 Hz CW Filter. My plan for the FMT is to use a
GPS Disciplined Oscillator as a BFO, and by measuring the frequency of
the beat tone, I will be able to accurately determine the mystery
transmit frequency, without worrying about the dial calibration or drift
of the K3 itself.

It works fairly well with the standard 2.7 KHz filter, but, the WIDTH
control only reduces the DSP bandwidth down to 1.35 KHz. 1.35 KHz is
pretty wide if there is QRM near the mystery signal. I tried using the
XFIL button to manually switch in the 250 Hz filter, but signals don't
seem to pass through when I do that, and then when I touch SHIFT or
WIDTH, the roofing filter switches back to 2.7 KHz.

Is there a way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?  My alternative is
to set up a narrow digital filter in the tone recording software, but it
is still disconcerting to hear a bunch of QRM around the mystery signal
in real time.

Thanks in advance.

One remaining crazy problem - the receivers, both the main and the
sub-RX, are VERY dead.  Band noise doesn't move the S-meter on any
band, and *almost* nothing can be heard.  It sounds to me as if what
I'm hearing on either RX is probably the result of incidental

is open.  Can anyone who is intimately familiar with the K-3 suggest

Are there any no-name connectors or adapters anywhere in your system? When I got back on the air in 2003 I bought a lot of no-name adapters that turned out to be junk, and that caused me no end of failures that were hard to trace. REAL connectors and adapters say Amphenol on them (and aren't cheap), or have a MIL spec part number stamped into them (they're what I look for at hamfest flea markets, where they ARE cheap, because they aren't new and shiny). How about the antenna(s) themselves? Do you have (or can you borrow) an antenna analyzer? Try disconnecting the coax connector from the radio connecting it to the analyzer, and making measurements. If you're borrowing the analzyer, you probably also want the guy who loaned to you to make the measurements -- the user interface most analyzers nowadays can be varying degrees of user-unfriendly if you haven't studied the user manual. What happens if you transmit? What's the indicated SWR?  Do you have a watt-meter in line? I'd try with something like 5 W or 20W -- with 20W, it's very low power from the 100W stage.73, Jim K9YC__Elecraft mailing listHome:http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraftHelp:http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htmPost:mailto:elecr...@mailman.qth.netThis list hosted by:http://www.qsl.netPlease help support this email list:http://www.qsl.net/donate.htmlMessage delivered tok...@gjschwartz.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX does not always work at power up

Does your K3 have gold pins on the front panel connector?  The old
tinned pins were apt to cause a lot of weird/intermittent problems.

Glad you were able to fix the D25 issue.

I should try the TX next time.

Power cycling the radio once or twice usually makes it work right away

This radio is being used as a remote radio - and I leave it on almost
all the time - that is one reason this is not been more of an issue

night after replacing D25 - and the radio seemed deaf - but even more
deaf than before as it coudl not even fainly here the signal

It is an older K3 that has been mostly upgraded to a K3S.
Single receiver.
2m module.
Newer pre amp.
USB interface.
RX ant ports.

Anyone recall seeing this symptom before?

Re: [Elecraft] DX Clusters reccomendation

2022-07-28 Thread David Hachadorian
The real value in using DX Clusters is the ability to apply detailed
filtering, such as

Band
Band Segment
Mode
State and country of spotted stations
State and country of spotters

For CW and Digital modes, it is essential that the cluster provides
spots from the Reverse Beacon Network, a worldwide network of automatic
decoding machines for those modes.

From a quick perusal of the LOG4OM manual, it looks like the only
filtering is for Band and Mode.

Below is my method for connecting to Telnet Nodes. I recently posted it
on the N1MM Logger Reflector.  If you don't want to use this method, at
least you can use the included list of recommended CC-Cluster nodes.

--

There are many ways to hook up to Telnet.  I recommend the following
method.  It has worked great for me for years.

1. Go to http://www.bcdxc.org/ve7cc/ and download the CC-User program.
The download link is about 2/3 of the way down the page.

2. Open CC-User, and get it set up.  I can help you with this if you
need help.

3. For maximum compatibility with CC-User, connect to a Telnet Node that
runs CC-Cluster software, and also carries spots from the Reverse Beacon
Network (RBN).  I recommend the following:

ve7cc-1,  ve7cc.net, port 23
ae5e-2, dxspots.com, port 23
n4zkf-1, dxc.n4zkf.com, port 7373
w0mu-1, w0mu.net, port 7373
w8wts-3, dxc.w8wts.net, port 7373

4. Before each contest, set up the filter parameters on the Telnet Node
by using the slick graphical CC-User interface.  No knowledge of arcane
filter commands is needed.  After the Node is all set up, you can
minimize CC-User so it doesn't take up screen space.  CC-User Feeds the
filtered spots to N1MM logger via an internal telnet connection on a
node called localport, 127.0.0.1, port 7300.  You may have to edit that
node into the N1MM Node List.

5. Another advantage of connecting to a CC-Cluster is the built-in error
filtering of those nodes.  It is very rare to see a busted call from a
CC-Cluster Node.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Frequency Calibration

2021-12-19 Thread David Hachadorian
That Keuwlsoft Audio Frequency Counter is pretty cool!  Thanks for
pointing it out.

I found the easiest way to use it is to put the K3 in reverse CW, tune
to 10.00 MHz, and set REF CAL to a setting that "eyeball averages"
best to your PITCH setting.  Even with the eyeball averaging, it is
pretty obvious which REF CAL setting is best. Use reverse CW, because if
you rotate REF CAL to the right, the pitch will increase, so it is more
intuitive than normal CW.

I will use this as my go-to cal procedure.

Switch back and forth between reverse cw and normal cw, adjusting REF CAL
until the tones are equal in pitch on normal and reverse.

This procedure should get you calibrated well within 1 Hz, much better than
required for any amateur radio application that I can think of.

In addition, I installed the "Keuwlsoft Audio Frequency Counter" app on
my Android phone and set it next to the speaker. Its display in Hertz
makes dialing in the reference calibration value quick and easy. On my
K3 it shows about .5 Hz difference between Norm and Rev. I certainly
cannot hear that!

Put the radio in CW mode, tune to a WWV frequency and press and
release SPOT.  The radio will automatically zero to the carrier with a
tone that matches your preferred CW note.  Then via the CONFIG MENU go
to REF CAL and adjust up or down with the VFO A knob,  the number of
Hz error the previous SPOT routine disclosed.   A 10 Hz change on the
REF CAL will equate to about 2 Hz at 10 MHz.    I find that checking
several different WWV frequencies is even better using this method.
To make sure it is optimum, tune to 5 or 10 Hz above and below each of
the WWV frequencies.  Press SPOT from both above and below and see how
it resolves.   Usually I can get within 2 Hz or better on all of
them.  You may need to do this several times.  Be sure the radio has
been on for at least 1/2 hour to allow things to stabilize.

Pete,

When using WWV to set the K3 reference, make certain you are listening
to the carrier.? WWV is an AM signal that is modulated by a 500 or 600
Hz tone on alternate minutes (440 Hz 2 minutes after the hour).? That
produces tones that are both above and below the carrier.
So be certain you are hearing the carrier and not one of the modulating
tones.

You had it fixed, but then you broke it again. After doing the
alternative method on page 49, when you tune in to 10. MHz in CW

I got an extremely good score on last year's Frequency Measuring Test

For 12 years I've tried to get any enhancement of s/n from the K3 IF/RF
NB and NR.  I haven't seen one case where there is any improvement under

reception is better with NB/NR turned off.  As far as I can see, both of
these features are useless on the K3 under contest conditions.

I don't know anything about the KPA-1500, but I have seen similar power
ramping if I have K3/config/TX DLY set too short for my AL-1500 amps.
With that amp, I have to set TX DLY to 14 msec.  What happens is that
the K3 sees a momentary high swr before the amp relay closes, and
throttles back power.  Sometimes you can even see "high swr" flash on
the K3 display.  The power then slowly ramps up as the K3 recovers.

You need a filter on the TX radio to prevent its phase noise from being

Given the improved performance of modern transceivers, is there still a call
for high specification W3NQN band pass filters in a 2-transmitter station? For
example on a Multi-2 contest environment. For instance K3S + KPA + KAT. The
filter fitted between radio and amplifier.

I have the *feeling* that a receive-only filter (with tx bypass) might be all
that is needed. This is much easier to implement than a full transmitter-rated
set making fast switching between bands (eg for a quick look around) very quick
and easy from the keyboard, etc.

Re: [Elecraft] Tecsun portables

2021-07-27 Thread David Hachadorian
I use a Tecsun PL-660 for RFI tracking.  It is very sensitive, and has
two steps of attenuation.  It has a jack for an external antenna, which
disables the built-in whip. Frequency coverage is good.  It has a BFO,
which is helpful in listening to certain types of noise.  It has a
headphone jack which is good for a noisy outdoor environment.  I use
alkaline batteries, and battery life is very good.  In the AM band, the
built-in ferrite antenna is very directional.  I've never wished for a
feature that it did not have.

Hi,

Looking to replace my dead SW portable often used for RFI tracking.

Tecsun seem to be popular. Any suggestions which model?

Re: [Elecraft] Front end RF overload

2021-07-21 Thread David Hachadorian
Dale Farnsworth (call sign unknown) posted on Monday that the Mouser
part number for the more robust version is 771-BAP64-04-T/R .  Maybe you
missed it.  Mouser has over 4000 in stock at a price of $0.38, or 10 for
$3.10.

Glad you found the problem.  It's a relatively easy fix.

Dave... thanks so much. The sensitivity returned when I did the J66
jumper test. So looks like PIN diode D5 needs to be replaced. Looks
like I can order from Mouser. Will do some digging and see if I can
find the "more robust version".

Unfortunately, the link near the bottom for the more robust
replacement part doesn't work anymore, but maybe someone can come up
with the part number.  I've got a bunch of them at home, but I'm on
vacation.  The robust replacement is slightly larger in size, but it
will still fit on the solder pads if you are careful.

I checked Ant 2 and RX antenna and the same problem so probably not
the surge protectors on each of these inputs. Any ideas on what part
goes out when this happens. The TX radio was on 20 meters and the RX
radio was on 15 meters.
