Re: [Elecraft] Are you satisfied with your K3?

2012-12-06 Thread David Little

And to elaborate on this theme, it is my setup on QTH up for trade. It is
equal in price with a new FTDX-5000MP, and I am asking for the value of a
used MP for it.

Separately, I have tried to sell it for what used MPs are going for.

I had tried to sell it for that price previously on QTH, and got a lot of
flack about the price being too high.

Do the math.

Unfortunately, some gear retains resale value better than others.

I traded a FTDX-9000MP for the K3, P3, KPA-500, power supply, Heil Mic, Mic
stand and a Swan 700CX.

I based the trade on the published receive specs. I had K3 fever, and was
pushing for the best possible receive specs and capabilities. The KPA-500
would offer me 100 watts extra power, and the Pan Adaptor, while showing
potential for further development, fell a little short in comparison with
the DMU capabilities.

The 9000MP was used nearly exclusively for government spectrum in volunteer
contingency communications support. Had I asked the correct questions, I
would have known before hand that the MARS/CAP software band limits removal
routine cut out a fair slice of spectral real estate between 7650 KHz and 10
MHz.

Also, 100 percent of my operation on federal spectrum was in nets authorized
for mixed mode operations; where digital and voice communications were
allowed, and it was expected that the operators were capable of operating
either mode on command, and both modes within minutes (or less) of each
other.

Where the K3 excels in CW and Ham Band Dx, it doesn't match up with the
operability of an IC-718 in my application. My mistake; no one else's - I
just never thought it possible for the limitations to be present in a rig of
that cost and reputation.

On top of that, the fellow I traded with claimed it to be perfect in every
way, and I had to replace a FET in the low power amplifier to get the power
stability and distorted transmit audio problem corrected. The amp went back
to Elecraft, after it developed a high reflected power error, even into a
dummy load. We live and learn. I had tried to use it with an IC-756 Pro
II, and a LDG AT-1000 pro. The results of that combo was a fused antenna
relay in the 756 pro and all the magic smoke was driven from the AT-1000
Pro. Fortunately, I was able to isolate the problem in the Icom and replace
the relay. LDG made the tuner good, with an updated model; sent to me at no
cost. We all need to be careful in our trades with fellow hams.. I hate to
admit that..

Where the features and operability of the K3 may have been a bit less than I
was expecting, the Elecraft Customer Service was a far more pleasant
experience. Howard was able to point out the exact failed component over
the phone after a few trouble shooting procedures. He was patient,
informative, and well versed on the product. When the replacement FET that
I ordered from Elecraft arrived, and was replaced, a phone call netted more
patient responses from Howard as I set the Bias on all three of the FETs on
the LPA Board. When I sent the KPA-500 in for repair, the turn around was
extremely quick, and the cost was certainly fair for the work done,. No
complaints at all about how Elecraft supports their product.

All in all, I wish I hadn't ever let the FTDX-9000MP go, and wish I could
recover enough to get a FTDX-9000D and only lose 200 watts over the deal. I
am still hopeful I could possibly recover enough to get a used FTDX-5000MP,
(lose 3 micro tune modules, true second receiver, the DMU, TFT screen, and
200 Watts).

If no hope of either of those possibilities, I will know that I at least
tried to recover the value of a used setup when compared with a used setup
of another manufacture, where both carried the same retail price and age.

But, FWIW, it is all on me. No one forced me to keep trying to build the
best station for my type of operations. I have done some reconsidering, and
will be moving away somewhat from the contingency communications volunteer
operations, and devote some time to other endeavors. It is one of those
situations where you really wanted to do the best possible job that your
equipment would allow, and just got too close to the abyss.

I could have done worse, I suppose. There is still a lot that can be done
with the setup in the environment that it was ultimately designed for.

The shortcomings were in my expectations, not the equipment. I maintain a
presence here, as the firmware is evolving, and I have already seen
improvement in the capabilities after less than 2 months of ownership; by
firmware evolution alone. I only threw away the bath water; I kept the
baby.

Re: [Elecraft] K-Line system integration questions

2012-11-26 Thread David Little

FWIW, you can find InsideOut Edgeport interfaces on eBay that are usually
quite reasonable.

I have them in 2 port, 4 port and 8 port configurations.

The use a single USB connector and provide what the computer sees as stable
serial ports that stay where you put them.

Each port can be configured, port number renamed, etc via the Control panel
- System...

The USB ports have a tendency to wander around if you use them in real world
situations.

With all the problems associated by a difference in ground potential,
mechanical switchboxes increase the chances for ground loop.

I am coming into this thread late, so apologies if this has already been
covered.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Problems

2012-11-26 Thread David Little
Chas,

If a single button held in on power up won't cure it, grab a handful.

The CPU should still be attempting to strobe the panel for key presses.

All you want it to do is have the lockup clear up long enough for the cpu to
sense a correctable failure.

If/When you get it unlocked; immediately reload all firmware; or at a
minimum, the firmware that seemed to be affected.

And the word corrupted is probably the most salient term here.

You may have to scare the cpu worse than it already is, before it will allow
a fix.

You may be amazed to find that if you disconnect all devices, cables, etc
and physically move the K3 so you can be sure it is not connected, in any
way, to the real world; the problem may dissipate after a few hours;
provided it is the equivalent of a ground loop.

If not, removing the back-up battery and letting it stand for a half hour
may bear favorable results.

This is a computer. It fails just like any other computer..

It's stability is largely dependent on the complexity of the firmware's
ability to be able to second guess every way a task can be attempted.

Before you try the radical approach; Elecraft Support should be available
soon, as they sun is coming up on the left coast.

Re: [Elecraft] Small HF amp suggestions

2012-11-07 Thread David Little
Take a look at this site: http://www.n2ckh.com/fl110.htm

These show up from time to time. My little QRP circle of friends have found
2 in the last month. Both were around $300.

When you see a solid state amp that was built in the late 70's with the
original output transistors, you get the feeling it was put together
correctly.

The amp can actually take up to 15 watts in, and can develop higher output
than the 110 watt advertised output.

I believe it has a 200 watt PA potential.

The Tokyo HL50 (forerunner to the HL45) can be purchased in the 350 - 400
price range.

If you have to order one new, and pay shipping, it can become cost
prohibitive.

You can always go the Metron route, and have up to 1K watts; if you have
enough battery and charging system.

[Elecraft] K3 Receive Sensitivity Consistency

2012-10-28 Thread David Little
When I turned the K3 on this morning, I decided to listen to 60m, to get
away from the contesting.

As I went through the bands from the 2 meg frequency I had been monitoring,
when it got to the 5 MHz band it seemed to be a bit deaf.

Volume was considerably lower, but signal on the P3 looked consistent with
the other bands.

Going into the Menu and bringing the Receive EQ to +16 on all 8 frequencies
did not restore the volume level.

Using the Band switch, toggling back down to 75m brought similar results;
lower receive level.

However when going back to the original 2 Meg frequency and manually tuning
up with the VFO, the sensitivity and volume remained consistent all the way
up to the 5 Meg freq that I was trying to monitor initially.

After that, going through the spectrum using the Band Select switch yielded
consistent results.

When using the VFO, I was looking for a magic relay click, or some crossed
frequency threshold that triggered a return to sensitivity, but there was no
degradation as long as I was going up the band with the VFO.

Serial Number 5063; Anyone else seen this before?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receive Sensitivity Consistency

2012-10-28 Thread David Little

Preamp, Attenuator, ATU, AGC were all checked before determining that the
audio on 60m was lacking.

The levels on the P3 were also checked to aid in determining the problem.

RX EQ was all maxed out in able to overcome the inherit audio attenuation
when the EQ settings are moved off of +16.

My guess is that it seems to be firmware related, and for now, the problem
has been cleared out of the processors scratch pad memory, and may not show
up again.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 input SWR in standby ...a question.

2012-10-19 Thread David Little

FWIW, below are my notes - from before I sent mine in for repair.

Something happened that caused an LDG AT-1000Pro to toast the protection
Diode, and an Icom IC-756 Pro 2 to burn one of the contacts off of the
antenna 1 / antenna 2 change over relay.

I had already taken the K3 out of line for unstable output before trying the
Pro II.

We found one of the drivers bad on the K3.

It is looking like the amp is common to all items that were affected.

I am in luck in that I can replace the driver on the K3, and the relay on
the Pro 2.

Dwayne at LDG will treat me right on the 1000Pro, so all I am really stuck
with so far is the $65.00 to ship and insure the LPA500 to Elecraft, and
whatever they find wrong, plus return shipping and insurance.

Here is what I wrote:

MFJ Analyzer shows (worse case at 50 MHz) 1.5:1 in standby and 1.1:1 in
operate with dummy load connected directly to amp output.

My problem is that the amp shows high SWR and REFL HI error whenever it is
keyed; no matter what the power or load or band.

I am guessing whatever went wrong with the amp sent a fair size spike out to
both the rig and external tuner.

If you are going to die, you may as well take a few with you :)

I will find out soon enough.

Hi All,

Thanks for the messages about the power up LCD blink - it's the way it
should be.

Now another question: my KPA500 replaces an old AL811. I noticed, when I
connected the KPA500 in line, that the K3 SWR meter was giving slightly
higher than expected readings with the amp in standby. Given that nothing
else in my transmission chain had changed, other than swapping over the
amps, I thought this was strange. I also noted that my LP100 meter would
show an SWR of 1.0:1 (on the rig side of my manual tuner) while the K3 meter
would show an SWR of 1.2:1. The KPA500 SWR meter agrees with the LP100.

Looking at this, I put a dummy load on the output of the KPA500 and with the
amp in standby, I found that on 20m and above, the KPA500 input SWR is
around 1.2:1 with a maximum of 1.3:1 on 6m, measured by an Antenna analyzer
on amp's input. Also, taking the amp out of line by physically
disconnecting it and using a coax barrel connector to join the input and
output lines causes the K3 and LP100 meters to agree.

So, is this input SWR variation in standby mode, within spec for the
KPA500? I didn't see this with my AL811 in line, but then I'd carefully
adjusted its tuned inputs.

Please tell me I'm fly specing here and to stop obsessing :)

Cheers
JohnVK7JB

operate it goes back to 1.1:1. This reads on a SWR analyzer (again, not
dynamic conditions).

I have talked to Howard at Elecraft, and I will be sending it in for a
checkout.

Thanks to all who responded.

Do I understand right that high power is the key. In other words, you can
run low power through the amp with the amp in bypass? The first thing I look
for when this happens is something arcing under high power. Check your
connectors. Once you arc a connector it will often have a carbon trace on it
that will make it keep arcing even without the stress of trying to run to a
high SWR load through a tuner.

Same thing with drive from 10 watts up.

 Suggestions?

[Elecraft] K3 Data Modes using SignaLink USB

2012-10-12 Thread David Little
Got my cable in today to do soundcard data modes on the K3 with a SignaLink
USB

Not much chance of getting the cabling incorrect, installation was uber
easy. I used the rear panel inputs and outputs for the additional
isolation; allowing me to keep the Mic on the front panel for mixed mode
operation requirements.

However, I am not having much luck finding a stable plateau to chance moving
it off the dummy load and on the air.

Output power isn't stable, and rises while the rig is in transmit.

If power is changed while in transmit, it drops off, then starts building
again.

No power is generated until output level on the interface is high enough to
generate ALC action.

Not much chance of anything dependable here Where am I going wrong?

I never run any ALC, unless it is an occasional flicker; usually a reference
to decrease volume for a purer signal.

Some prefer to run the output power to 25 watts and run 50% ALC, and share
the signal up and down the band.

I would prefer to set the power to a higher starting point, set the volume
level correctly, then decrease the power, if necessary, maintaining a clean
signal throughout.

Anytime the power level on the K3 is changed at all, the output falls down
and starts to build again. Around 30 to 45 seconds into a transmission, it
may stabilize.

I have used the SignaLink USB on a FT-897, FT-817, FTDX-9000MP, TS-2000,
IC-756Pro II, IC-7000, IC-706, IC-7200, FT-857, FT-2000, Jupiter, IC-756
Pro, TS-870, TS-480 And never experienced any instability of output
before.

Currently, I run them in the shack on a FT-897, FT-817, IC-756 Pro II,
TS-2000 and the K3. The other rigs provide a stable digital platform

When using a protocol where sync is dependent on the start of the
transmission, the instability of power cannot be tolerated.

I am a bit beyond RTTY and PSK-31 in the modes I need to run. The trend I
am operating toward now is in the direction of ARQ modes, and require a more
refined approach than what I am seeing so far.

I hope I am doing something wrong, and someone can provide some direction.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Data Modes using SignaLink USB

2012-10-12 Thread David Little

Don,

Thanks for the info.

I will give it a try, and will find out soon enough if the 4 bars of ALC
activity is trashing the signal quality, as anticipated.

From the other brands I have used and am currently using, the K3 seems to be
the only one that uses this approach, so I am not sure if I understand your
reference to internet wisdom...

Does the K3 use some other kind of output processing, and just hang an ALC
label on it?

No problem on driving the SignaLink; I can match them to the other gear,
using jumpers or resistors, as well as matching in the software input
config.

Please don't tell me this is the same approach that Microsoft uses when
contemplating changing a light bulb; defining darkness as the new
standard :)

David,

Are you following the instructions in the K3 manual, or are you trying
to follow the wisdom supplied on the internet? The K3 is different
than the internet wisdom transceivers.

The fact that you say the output is not stable leads me to believe you
are trying to use the internet wisdom that tells you to set the power
to maximum and use the audio injection to control the power output.
That is a recipe for problems when using the K3 (K2 as well, but that is
not the question).

Refer to the K3 manual and adjust the audio drive to give 4 bars on the
ALC meter solid and the 5th bar flickering - you can do that in TX TEST
so you do not bother your ham neighbors.

Once you have done that, set the power knob to your desired power level
and all will be well.

The SignaLink may have to be set for Line Level output - it is plugged
for mic level by default. See the manufacturer's documentation to see
how to set it to line level output.

2012-10-12 Thread David Little

Don,

That puts things into a better perspective.

With that in mind, it does mimic normal ALC operation.

I don't quite know how to interpret the instability in output while it is
measuring volume units, before it switches to ALC and stabilizes.

David.

I would like to point out that the K3 ALC indicator is also a level
indicator. The onset of ALC begins at the 5ht bar, and bars 1 through 4
do not indicate any ALC action at all. They are more like a VU meter
provided to allow you some metering to help you adjust the audio level.

Yes, I had the same issue. You can reduce it if you go into the menu and
 set
AGC*THR to 5 (or 4). 4 will totally eliminate the distortion but will
reduce the maximum volume the radio will produce. For me, (I'm going to say
it) the wimpy audio amplifier is a big disappointment. As you have
discovered, even using an external speaker it does not produce decent
volume. If I use the radio outside in my patio, headphones are pretty much
manditory. Even with headphones, if my neighbor is mowing his lawn. it can
be difficult to hear. My K2 has enough amplifier that I can just drown out
such noise. I would certainly have accepted a few more mA of current drain
 for a decent audio amplifier.

 Hello elecrafters,

I fully understand that audio from the internal speaker of KX3 could be
distorted at high level say 30. However, even I plug in an external
self-power speaker, the audio is still distorted if I set the AF level at
 say 30.

Apparently, the audio distortion is not only due to the small speaker but
also caused by the internal audio amplifier within KX3.

Is my observation normal? I am NOT complaining anything but just want to
make sure that my radio is without fault.

Thanks for your help in advance.

[Elecraft] 43 ft Vertical Balun

2010-06-06 Thread David Little
Those of you who a thinking about a 43 ft vertical or how to feed it might
read the links I have provided you here.
I have built a 43 ft vertical from a 50 ft telescoping Rohn push-up pole. I
am using a mesh ground system under it
thanks to Home Depot's 4ft x 7 ft mesh sheets linked together, radial
wires, grounding rods, and a homebrew balun.
I am using a K2 with ATU and 100 watts through a short run of LMR400 coax to
the base of the antenna where the
balun is located. The 43 ft vertical also supports my windom. The windom is
insulated from the vertical.

Below are several links on the 43 ft antenna including the AD5X info on how
to build your own balun. I based my
balun on his and it works fine. If you do not wish the build your own balun,
a great one can be purchased from
Balun Desins LLC. They offer two models for low and high power. The links
are all there.

Re: [Elecraft] Switching PS with the K3 - thoughts?

2009-05-25 Thread David Little
Another one that may be worth looking into (other than the suggestions
presented already) is the Alinco DM-330MV Switching supply.

It is metered, adjustable voltage, remotely accessible, small, quiet,
well laid out, and it has a feature similar to Yaesu's Clock Shift,
whereby you can shift any noise it might make to another frequency; on
the fly.

However, I haven't found any noise from it yet, and the Radio Shack 25
Amp (I believe is a Samlex model) has made some noise when used in my
transportable setup : http://www.se-hams.com/html/emcomm1.html

I am in the process of replacing all of my power supplies with this
Alinco model.

Take a Look: http://www.alinco.com/Products/DM330MVE/
