[Elecraft] K3 power reduction due to high SWR
At what point does the SWR have to rise up to before the K3/10 output power begins to decrease? I have been using a TS-830 which is not bothered by SWR up to at least 3:1. I cannot get the tuner now so will I be forced to run very low power if my SWR is 2 or 3 to 1? What about the K3/100? My antennas are resonant fan dipoles (80, 40, 20, 17) fed with 250 feet of 72 ohm cable TV coax. [Elecraft] Wrong reference in KX3 Preliminary Owner's Manual
The reference on page 27 of the KX3 preliminary Owner's Manual concerning remote control software leads to an error 404 that the page does not exist on this site. I assume the link has changed or is wrong in the manual. I would like to know the correct link and if this also is the location where one can get the KX3 Utility software. [Elecraft] KX3 travel/portable protection
It would be nice if someone would develop a rubber like slip-on covering for the KX3 like they have for multi-meters. It would need openings in the appropriate places and lettering for the opening designations that it covers up. Also nice would be a mating plastic snap-on cover (clear?) that fits over the display and controls. All this would help keep the KX3 from damage because the smaller and more portable a radio is the more likely it could suffer damage during travel/portable operations. [Elecraft] KX3 and Data modes
I have not had any experience using data modes in low power radios. Will the KX3 be nearly as effective using data modes as it will be using CW? From what I read in the preliminary manual I guess it is possible to connect a portable PC with data software to use the data modes in addition to the self-contained capability. I would assume SSB to be the least effective mode of operation among the KX3 modes. [Elecraft] K3/100 or KX3 with all the options?
This question has been going around in my head and I would like some feedback from Elecraft owners for I have never had any Elecraft radio equipment. Which is better to have a K3/100 kit or a KX3 with all the options including the forthcoming 100 watt PA? I'm assuming the cost will be about the same. [Elecraft] K3/100 or KX3 with all the options
My radio needs are very modest for I am not a contester, or DXer, or even one who makes a lot of contacts but I do listen quite a bit. I do like to have a fine radio and presently own one - the Kenwood TS-830S. I have no intention of parting with it. As far as modes go I operate HF primarily SSB and PSK31. I am trying to improve my CW ability however I have a problem with CW. Just like some people have mic fright I have CW contact fright. I like CW but I just can't do it and enjoy it. The final bit of information is the fact that my wife hates amateur radio, which causes me to occasionally put my radio in storage. I will digest all the thoughtful comments many of you made and make my decision. Although I do operate from home, you can see that for me perhaps getting away to the local state park or some other place away from home might provide me with the best operating enjoyment. Doing that would be best accomplished with the KX3. [Elecraft] KX3 versatility
I think the versatility of the KX3 is its best-selling point. It can work as a complete base station radio with or without the 100 watt amp. It can be used in the car with its own batteries or connected to the car power jack (with both + and - fused). It can be used while taking a walk or taking a vacation. It can be thrown into a briefcase when you go on a business trip. It can be taken with you to a nursing home or to an assisted living facility. It can be taken to Field Day and run off solar power. It can be taken with you while you're waiting in the car for your wife to do her shopping - how long does that take? It can be used in all these situations and more yet not sacrifice any features you may want or need at any time. You may not be able to have an antenna to transmit in all these cases but you can always connect a length of wire and listen. Many hams have multiple radios for different purposes, but most of us can't afford to do that. So for those who can only afford one radio and so needs it to serve them in many different ways, the KX3 would seem to be just the radio they need to have. [Elecraft] Understanding the KX3 Block Diagram
Hoping that I may not be the only Ham puzzled by the block diagram of the KX3 I am asking that someone please explain it because it is so different from the superheterodyne radio concept I have become accustomed to in current amateur radios. I understand direct conversion radios but what is all the stuff that's there besides the mixer-oscillator and audio amplifier needed by a direct conversion radio? It seems to me the KX3 block diagram looks a lot like radios put forth some time ago by Rick Campell KK7B. Pardon my saying so but the KX3 radio looks like it has a weak front end and a heavy back end that hopes to make up for the weak front end! [Elecraft] Using KX3 and PSK31 with a computer
The KX3 manual has instructions for using PSK31 and printing text on the display, however nothing is said about using PSK31 and a computer. There are instructions for Data A and AFSK A using a PC but no instructions about using a PC with PSK D.
