Re: [Elecraft] Modern battery for K2

2013-08-07 Thread Deni F5VJC
Hi Sverre, I am still using this battery external to the K2. It is very
convenient as it just sits under the rig and easily connects to the K2
power jack with the attached cable provided, no mods required. Yes the
switch needs to be ON both for charging and when in use as a supply for the
K2, and yes the LED is ON in this state so will no doubt in time discharge
the battery. As it seems very convenient like this I decided to leave the
battery external. I have now purchesed another Na I find them to be
excellent and much better than the heavier limited Ah SLA batteries.

If fitted inside the K2, the switch must be on and then the indicator will
discharge the battery - unless someone has found a way to disable the LED

As an external battery, it would be excellent though, as far as I can

[Elecraft] K3USB ??

2008-11-22 Thread Deni F5VJC

I bought a K3USB when I ordered my K3, quite now some time ago...

I have never used it as I've been using a standard serial port with my K3.
Now I want to convert to USB and of course I've lost the K3USB device. I
can't even remember what it looks like!

Can someone describe, or better still send me a pic of the K3USB so I know
what I'm looking for? I have vague recollections of a silver screened cable
with a clear outer sheath...?

Any help appreciated, thanks

[K3] [Elecraft] K3USB? Solved thanks to all

2008-11-22 Thread Deni F5VJC

Aha!
Many thanks for the pic Patrick, I have a feeling I've seen that somewhere
recently, but passed it over as not what I was looking for.
Now I know, great!
My excuse is I've recently moved house so the shack is being rebuilt from
the chaos of moving.

Also thanks to others who responded.
Interesting the comments about introducing noise into the K3 via USB, I'll
certainly look out for that.
If I find that it does I'll go back to the standard serial port which has
been absolutely fine.

Thanks again all.

[Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

2008-10-08 Thread Deni F5VJC

Has anyone found a solution to the cabinet buzz from the K3 internal speaker?

I've not used the internal speaker until recently on my K3 and now find I
have annoying cabinet buzz around 450Hz and 600Hz, not so good for CW!

I haven't tried any damping as yet and just wondered if anyone has managed
to cure this cabinet resonance.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

2008-10-08 Thread Deni F5VJC

Thanks to all who responded to this question.

Having looked into it further it seems I have a combination of cabinet buzz
and a defective speaker.
I removed the top panel of my K3 did tests and found the most bothersome
buzz at 600/610 Hz is still present with the top panel detached.
Checked screws all tight (not too tight) and various other mechanical tweaks
but can't clear it. So I guess I will email Elecraft support about a
possible replacement speaker.

This is a very small annoyance in an otherwise fine radio, and it's just
come to light now because I always used external speakers or headphones
until now, having reduced my K3 to bare bones due to an impending move of
shack, I'm listening to it's internal speaker.

Re[Elecraft] ading/Posting to Elecraft list?

2008-09-03 Thread Deni F5VJC

This is getting way too complicated.
I have been reading and posting to the Elecraft reflector, list or whatever
you call it now since 2000 when I discovered Elecraft and built my K2.
Right now with my K3 I'm getting increasingly confused as to the
best/easiest way to view and post messages to the list/forum or whatever
it's called now, and as you can see I'm posting from Nabble, the only method
that seems to work for me.

Would someone informed please advise the best/easiest way to view and post
to Elecraft?

I'd rather be playing K3 radio than messing with this stuff...

[Elecraft] Sub Rx Success!

2008-08-25 Thread Deni F5VJC

Just completed the installation of the Sub Rx in K3 325!

Very pleased to say all went well and it's working just fine. Need to learn
how to drive it now.

I'm very relieved to say the least that no problems were encountered and the
Config and DSP 2 update went without a hitch. It took me about five hours,
taking things carefully.

I was actually rather dreading messing with my Working FB K3 to install
the sub Rx but so glad now it's done and appears to be working in a rather
spectacular fashion!

Bon courage

[Elecraft] Soldering Stations??

2007-06-03 Thread Deni, F5VJC
I'm hoping to get a Hakko 936 (or it's clone) very soon and wondering
what would be the best tip to order for SMT work? I'll be building the
SoftRock Lite kit for use with my K3 so have decided it's time to
upgrade the soldering tools. I've managed a small SMT project for my K2
using my old and trusty Weller but now want something better. I know
quite a few in this group use the Hakko so I would appreciate some
advice on iron tip sizes for SMT as well as the normal sizes.

[Elecraft] K3 for me...

2007-05-06 Thread Deni, F5VJC

Hi Julian, well said! My views exactly as another in EU with an early K2. Good

I'm totally gobsmacked by the K3. I never imagined that the K3 people have
fantasized over for years on this reflector would actually become a
reality, in kit form too, at such a reasonable price. The moment I saw
this, as when I first read about the K2 back in 1999, I knew this was one
radio I just had to have.

From this side of the Atlantic, at $2 / £1 exchange rate, it looks very
good value indeed. I'm hoping that the modular kit will qualify for import
duty exemtion as well. I have decided to get my order in before one of the
UK dealers asks for exclusive UK distribution rights and we all end up
having to pay twice the price.

Re: [Elecraft] Static rain ?

2006-12-09 Thread Deni, F5VJC

Very interesting Geoff, thanks for the comments. I've deliberately not
installed those front end diodes in my K2.
As to the rain static, we've had very severe rainstorms in France as
I believe you too have experienced in the UK and this problem with rain
static I have never heard so bad, however this is a relatively new
antenna installation for me. The vertical element is constructed from a
42' length of coax using the braid as the radiator to provide a fat
wire, this radiator is suspended inside a Spiderbeam fiberglass pole
so is in no way in direct contact with the rain. I used to use a
butternut vertical (exposed aluminium vertical radiator) and didn't
notice rain static quite like this. Yes my feeling is the resistor bleed
would be better than the choke for the reasons you mention, still, I've
just been out and measured the resistance from the antenna to ground and
of course it reads zero Ohms, through the ATU I imagine so I don't quite
see why I need a further static bleed path, but I'll try it anyway.

Good to hear your K2 is a survivor, I've not had that horror, something
I dread, however at the base of my antenna is a spark gap arrestor and
then the auto ATU so...fingers crossed.

Deni
F5VJC

Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy wrote:

Deni,

My suggestion is that you use a resistor and not a choke. A choke at
some frequencies will become a series resonant L-C 'tuned' circuit,
and it is quite possible that the choke will resonate in or close to
one of the bands that you use. If that is the case you will loose
transmitter power heating up the choke, likewise the strength of
received signals reaching the receiver can be reduced. For static
bleeds I usually use 100k 2w carbon resistors, the old fashioned type
not carbon film, because the resistors *must* be non-inductive types.

My K2 survived a lightning strike to my 40m beam, but I think that the
combination of a coax spark gap out in the garden and an underground
coax feeder with 'surge loops' took out much of the sting. Back to
back diodes for protection against overload can create all sorts of
intermodulation problems if the diodes start to conduct, and for those
of us in Europe who share 40m with BC stations and using receivers
which cannot cope, overload is a problem but there are solutions.
Please contact me off list if you are interested.

Subject: [Elecraft] Static rain ?

I have recently been plagued by rain static on a new vertical antenna,
this is a 42 foot vertical fed at the base through an SG230 auto tuner,
and used on all bands. It seems I need a static bleed of some sort, a
choke or resistor. What is the best component to use in an outdoor
environment?
My junk box RF chokes look rather puny for this application, the
typical small 2.5mH RF choke.

Would a physically large, say 1 Meg resistor be more suitable ?
I thought the auto ATU would in itself provide a static bleed path,
but apparently not.
Is the K2 prone to front end damage due to this static charge? I do
not have the back to back diodes fitted (to prevent huge signal
overload)

Any thoughts, how have you solved this?

[Elecraft] K2 Toroids Latest?

2005-05-16 Thread Deni F5VJC

Hi Vic and all.

I have kept my K2 (1188) up to date with all the A/B mods, however at times
I see references such as the one below about T7 where a toroid may have
been changed from the original windings to a revised spec. Are these
documented anywhere, which toroids are now different and why?

Thanks,

=
It looks fine, although I would move the two wider filters a bit to the
right.
There looks like about 6-8 db difference in attenuation between the widest
and
narrowest filters, which is probably on the high side of normal (although
this
tends to vary). I see about 4 db on mine, which is #709 but has had the
crystals replaced and T7 rewound to current spec.

I would be interested in knowing how much difference in attenuation others
are
seeing. I know that K1JD has an ANCIENT K2 (field test vintage) which has
zero
db difference!
