Frank,

I was the foundation project engineer for the Square Kilometer Array (which
your URL refers to), as well as leading much of the effort to get the SKA
pathfinders on the ground here in Western Australia. As you know, there's a
complementary section of the Telescope in South Africa. Naturally we're all
excited about the prospects of the SKA, with the pathfinders having already
done much good work. However, despite many advances in signal processing
over the years there is still a place for very large single aperture
telescopes, such as the Chinese FAST instrument and (formerly) Arecibo. I
might add that a good deal of the impetus for FAST came from the Chinese
participation in the SKA consortium, a body in which the US originally
participated but later withdrew from. While the millions of dollars do
indeed mount up, the direct benefits and spin-offs from astronomy are
substantial, even putting aside the basic science outcomes. I certainly
hope the US is able to continue on its distinguished path in radio astronomy
and, SKA and FAST aside, there are many other prospects - on and off-shore -
for ensuring that happens. Like all science, though, it relies on the
enlightened being able to spread the good word!

[Elecraft] Diversity receive versus QRM eliminators

2020-06-29 Thread Dick Dickinson
This is a topic that interests me. I have a wrinkle to add.

Qualifications: I am a generalist rag-chew HF phone operator / listener.
I'm not seeking rare DX nor exploring weak signals in general nor a
competitive operator.

I'm currently running K3(-s) with a DXE NCC-2 and a 2 x 6 remote antenna
switch. I also have an MFJ-1026 but have not done A / B testing comparing
the 2 units. The 2 x 6 remote antenna switch allows me to select any of 6
for the Main / TX antenna and any of the 5 remaining as the RX / Noise
antenna.

Now to the wrinkle. Antenna modeling has shown me that Inverted Vee
antennas favor Vertical Polarization off the ends and Horizontal
Polarization on the broadsides. I have two Inverted Vees up for 40 meters.
The apex of each is about 38'. They are a nominal quarter wavelength apart
in spacing AND orthogonal to each other. That gives me the opportunity to
take some advantage of polarization per direction / selection of antenna.

In any event, that's the setup. I don't presently have any great findings
to share. At it simplest, I can select one or the other singly to lessen
noise bidirectionally. The noise canceling unit isn't necessary for
that.just the difference in polarization of the two antennas used singly can
be helpful. The orthogonal antennas do give me an additional variable to
utilize as far as noise diminishing / signal enhancing.

I've not had all this together for too long. I'm hoping the setup with
various antennas will prove effective in many circumstances. I believe I
have demonstrated that to my general satisfaction. Sometimes I've been able
to bring out an otherwise unheard side of a QSO by adjusting. SSB is tricky
to gauge Signal to Noise Ratio with signals jumping up and down as well as
background noises such at lighting intervening. A visual display such as a
spectrum scope helps, especially with overall background noise.

People familiar with operating Noise Canceling units may suggest that there
is little automatic about them. It often takes some work. If you have a
single source noise and an appropriate antenna setup, they can be quite
effective. Many think that antennas 'should be' as alike as possible in
orientation and phase. Others offer differing viewpoints.

I couple of times I have read that an Antenna Noise Canceling unit 'cannot'
take out lightning static. In some circumstances I have been able to
substantially diminish lightning static from beyond the horizon for a
much-improved S/N ratio. It is not easy and far from for sure with any
lightning storm but on some occasions, it can be done.

Digitization of some aspects of Antenna Noise Canceling is hopefully not too
far out in time. Direction determination with stationary (and unswitched)
antennas.a great bonus should that happen.

As ever,

Dick - KA5KKT

Re: [Elecraft] NCC-2 noise canceller with K3s?

2019-11-26 Thread Dick Dickinson
."So with the K3s and KPA-1500, then antennas as described, is there any

reasonable way to connect this up and if yes, should I expect a noticeable

improvement?"

Have you tried the current antenna setup with the 1026..? Did it perform at
all? If not, what were the perceived shortcomings?

'Conceptually,' I don't see a difference if a) you've tired the various
combos with the 1026, and b) you are making no other antenna changes. Yes,
I'd except better performance from the NCC-2. 'Less finicky'.can't say.
Finding nulls among a variety of noises can be tricky. With broadband
noise, it can sometimes be effective to Peak the overall noise and invert it
instead of seeking a null. Working or not, I can't see that you'd need any
changes to insert the NCC-2 short of changes to the antenna system.

I run a 1026 with a pair of 40 meter inverted vees. Until two weeks ago,
they shared a common apex (but not feed point) and were orthogonal to each
other. They were reversible as well.TX/RX with either. Local noise has
been low here recently, but there were usually somewhat effective when there
was noise. As well, I can use a mix of other antennas, but most of my
recent activity has been on 40 meters. The setup seems to make little
difference with atmospheric noise. Often there seems to be little I can do
to diminish that noise.

I've now moved one inverted vee a quarter wavelength away from the other and
still orthogonal. One vee still needs some pruning or other, but the
listening from Kentucky to the western states was very good last night.
There was little noise to be canceled.

My guess is that with what you have and no changes other than the noise
canceling unit, you'll get about what you are now getting, only more so with
the NCC-2.

Hi All

This message is to the administrators of this reflector.

Might it be possible to have the ability to have small images, such as
screen shots to be able to be passed via the reflector?

They can be an amazing teaching and learning tool to help others see what
is being discussed.

In decades passed, this feature was turned off due to dial up modems and
the images may have been a vehicle for virus payloads. Of course, dial up
modems are long gone for 99% of the people and a properly patched computer
will not now allow a program to run from an image.

Most, if not all other reflectors allow for this feature to be available.

Many thanks in advance for this consideration.

Yes. Also, any one of the ATU antenna jacks can be designated as a third

Yes, RX ANT1 and RX ANT2. The latter is also labeled XVTR IN, and can be

[Elecraft] Dual Receiver Tricks

2019-06-25 Thread Dick Dickinson
A late model SDR Receiver (only) is said to have a soon to be released
software update. I've seen a demonstration whereby using 2 antennas and a
computer device, the unit will be able (to some degree?) determine signal

Does Elecraft have plans to develop K4D software with such capabilities or
sanction 3rd party development of such? Will there be other software /
firmware development to come with the K4D beyond that of a dual receiver
K3/s?

Lastly, beyond control and perhaps IF output, will the K4 receiver(s) be
able to interface with external 'computers?' (No, I'm not sure what I mean
by that!)

Hi Dick,
The KAT4 is a separate item. It's an upgrade from the KAT3, with three RX/TX

I notice that a KAT4 ATU is offered as a separate purchase item. In the

Perhaps the KAT4 ATU is listed separately as a possible option on a future

Or, perhaps the KAT4 ATU is offered as a 2nd tuner to match a 2nd antenna as
could be found in a K4D.

Hopefully we can get some clarification.

[Elecraft] Tinnitus and the K3 RX EQ and Related Variables

2019-03-28 Thread Dick Dickinson
Age 70. I have a different hearing related problem as well as tinnitus.
Background noise on my rig above about 2.4kHz seems awfully hissy to me.
Above that point I have to start using the filters in my head to try and
shut the hissing out. The mental filtering takes some effort and can lead
to fatigue.

I'm not sure how this came to be for me, but perhaps it is what became to
seem natural for me after listening to HF SSB through a pair of cascaded
2.4kHz filters (Icom IC-751A) for 16 years. And even with that, I'd tend to
crank the passband tuning towards the lower end.

In my setup, I run my K3 through an LP-Pan, NaP3 software and onboard 192kHz
sound card. In NaP3/K3 I rarely run the filters above 2.4kHz top / 0kHz at
the bottom. As well, I use NaP3's equalizer dropping several dB above 4kHz.
The rest of the audio system is a 5.1 surround sound receiver with decent
bookshelf speakers + subwoofer. I can tolerate wide band audio above 2.4kHz
as long as it is well above the noise level, but generally don't find the
audio above that range as particularly useful.

Costco - A good ham friend of mine, somewhat older than myself used to swear
by the Costco hearing aids. He was a PhD EE and had a pretty good
appreciation for audio. I'm not sure if Costco offers different brands, but
if there is a make that most agree on, can someone mention that here?

Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?

2019-01-11 Thread Dick Dickinson
For those who dwell far to the right of the decimal point (rather than in
caves), I suppose there could be a whole alphabet of suffix designations. My
precise intent was a light-hearted, generic characterization. My K3 (Vintage -
Upgraded) is not currently up for sale.

Dick - KA5KKT

-

Except, it doesn’t actually MEAN anything. Unless you’ve been living in a cave
since you bought one, almost every K3 is “upgraded” to some extent. It doesn’t
solve the basic problem — a K3 (or even K3S to a lesser extent) needs to
specify precisely (1) what published mods have been installed, (2) what factory
mods have been installed, and (3) what options it contains.

I’d certainly never buy someone’s K3U thing without that information … with a
“U” or not.

This is just nuts …

The term 'Vintage' is often used on eBay to impart certain aspects of an item.
A K3S might be 'Modern.'
An updated K3 could be 'Modernized Vintage.'

"Is this 1.0:1 SWR across the entire 40 meter band curious or remarkable?"

I'd guess that it's improbable and likely the result of measurement error.
The reflected voltage will be zero for low or high power if the antenna
system is a perfect match . However, the (measured) reflected voltage will
also be zero for an imperfectly matched antenna system when there is not
enough power for the reflected voltage to be above the detection threshold
on the measurement device. The Elecraft SWR meters that I have (KPA500
and KAT500) will indicate SWR 1.0:1 with no forward voltage and also with
some forward voltage and no reflected voltage. You have to know when to
believe the reading and that may be only when the reading is not 1.0:1.

Running the sweep with higher power may give quite different results, but
running high power antenna sweeps may be considered anti-social.An
antenna analyzer will probably give a much better indication of your antenna
system characteristics.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] SWR - Numerical Indication

2018-12-02 Thread Dick Dickinson
Hi John,

Per your suggestion, I ran a sweep of my 40 meter vertical with the K3 /
K3EZ software.

I then measured at ~20 kHz steps with my MFJ-259B.

Both sets of measurements were taken from the PL-259 that plugs into the rig
or 259B.

Conditions were ~60 degrees F, ground nearly saturated.

Attached is an image of the results.

Kindly,

Dick - KA5KKT

---

Hi Dick,

An EZNEC and SimSmith model of the on ground 1/4 wave vertical:

https://www.kn5l.net/images/SS-KA5KKT-vertical.png

SimSmith R1 represents ground loss, the value set to establish a 50 ohm load
at the transmitter, G in SimSmith.

According to the models, the 7 to 7.3 MHz SWR is a little below 1.3.

A flat measurement using the K3 SWR meter seams reasonable. My suggestion is
to use a Antenna Analyzer to measure the antenna and system.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] SWR - Numerical Indication

2018-12-01 Thread Dick Dickinson
Thanks for the explanation, John.

I’m not an electronically educated fellow, merely just seeking the
practical.

A resolution to my post was provided in the suggestion that the apparent
1.1:1 SWR might be the result of common mode current. Sure enough when I
installed a 1:1 current balun at the feed point of the antennas (2
perpendicular Inverted Vees with a switchable common feed point), the value
went from 1.1:1 to 1.0:1 and the bottom of the SWR curves which also
broadened out.

Still that doesn’t explain why the K3 was showing 1.1:1 while passing 1.0:1
information to K3EZ, or so it seems. I don’t think that the K3EZ is
‘measuring SWR’ rather merely posting information it is getting from the
K3…no different measuring device or location. Perhaps it is a sort of
‘rounding error.’ By the way, for those who haven’t come across it, K3EZ
has the great feature of being able to step the K3 across a frequency range,
momentarily key it, step again, etc. and plot in text an SWR chart…a handy
feature for working with an antenna installation.

Following is a situation that perhaps you have the theoretical background to
explain…

I have a full-size monoband vertical for 40 meters. Simple architectural
aluminum tapering from 1 ¼” (?) in 6’ telescoping sections. The radial
field is designed to provide a 50 ohm match at the feed point…12 – 13’+
radials. It is fed directly…no matching device with RG-213 from the remote
antenna switch about 50’ away at my tower. The coax from the rig to the
remote antenna switch is estimated to be ~ 50’ in length. A lot of the time
running K3EZ to sweep the band (typically 20 watts), it will indicate a
1.0:1 SWR from 7.0 MHz to 7.3 MHz in 20 kHz steps. Occasional deviation
from one K3EZ run to another might be due to variations in moisture content
of the ground or less than perfect connection to the vertical…an uncommon
situation. The K3 shows the same readings.

Is this 1.0:1 SWR across the entire 40 meter band curious or remarkable?

Dick – KA5KKT

--

Hi Dick,

Some numbers: using the K3 Schematic, "K3S RF Board" Sheet 2, Section

B1. The power meter uses a series Schottky diode detector. The low

reasonable resolution is about 0.3 VDC, or 0.3 * .707 = 0.21 Vrms out of

the directional coupler.

The Power for 0.21 Vrms is:

0.21^2 / 50 = .88 mW

Assuming a 20 dB coupler 1:10 turns ratio, 0.88mW * 100 = 0.88W

reflected power.

Assuming forward power of 100 watts and 0.88 watt reflected power the

return loss is:

10 * log(100 / 0.88) = 20.6 dB

Using the calculator:

https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/tools/vswr-return-loss-calculator/

20.6 dB Return Loss computes to VSWR = 1.222

Therefore, the best lowest estimated K3 VSWR, assuming a 20 dB coupler,

is about 1.2.

Check my numbers.

Pardon the OT post.

Bandconditions.com has been a great resource for observing the (very)

returned this past Friday evening. Apparently some software was being
upgraded or otherwise improvements to the site...more data taken into

In any event, it site appears to still be down. It displays only a blank

[Elecraft] P3 vs LP-Pan / NaP3

2018-03-24 Thread Dick Dickinson
I use a K3 along with a LP-Pan and a K3 and a Windows computer. I consider
myself to be a very casual operator. I can't remember when I was last
engaged in other than friendly SSB QSO operation. NaP3 is usually in
operation when my K3 is on. I use no other accessory software for specialty
operation nor even LP-Bridge. I'll give a tip of the hat to my onboard
(motherboard) computer audio system and input.

I like NaP3 on my computer screen for a number of reasons.
My usual multitasking focus is on my computer screen.I'm
often engaged in other matters as I monitor the radio.
I monitor general activity on what band I may be currently
operating.sometimes seeking QSOs via 'point and click' rather than twirling
the knob to traverse up and down the band.
I observe the audio forms of stations that may have my
attention for some reason and at times other, perhaps unidentified signals
or noises in the spectrum.
NaP3 gives me satisfactory control of my K3.
The NaP3 window can be minimized or covered by another
depending on activity, or easily found if need be.
I operate it in an approximately 11" diagonal window which
takes up about 21% of the area of my 24" monitor. This leaves plenty of
room for other activities. I rarely use full screen mode for any of my
computer activities including OTA TV viewing and streaming video material.
I much prefer NaP3 over one or two other 'modular(?)' type
programs I have tried that may have complicated setups and / or variations.
NaP3 gives me what I need, at any size above about 10", where I need it and
a single window (Setup excepted).
The LP-Pan enclosure fits in well with a couple of other
accessory boxes which are on a shelf a short ways above my K3. It is turned
on and off with the rig. Rarely do I ever interact with the LP-Pan unit.
The NaP3 window has selections to allow for some features to
not be displayed.
*I can think of nothing other than operator preference that
would require a 2nd display for NaP3.
The ability to view 192kHz of bandwidth is satisfactory for
me, though I'm sure I could find use at times for more. Often I run at
about 50kHz of bandwidth in view.

If one has a style of operation similar to mine, the LP-Pan and NaP3
software may be a good fit. Whether P3 or LP-Pan + software.either
introduces new dimensions to amateur radio operation.

Best,
Dick - KA5KKT

*I recently acquired a 7" monitor for rearview camera which is awaiting
better weather for complete installation in my automobile. I've made a CD
slot insertable mount (kudos to WB4RVN) and the display is easily detached
and removed via a screw knob. The resolution is such that the NaP3 window
should fit nicely on it.approaching 1:1. I'll entertain suggestions of how
I might get plain ol' video (RCA) out of my computer or what might be an
appropriate adaptor.haven't gotten to looking as of yet. I have VGA, HDMI
and DVI(?) outputs, though the HDMI runs my customary display.

[Elecraft] K3: TX Gain Calibration Summary

I've just done a TX Gain Calibration. The numbers shown TX Gain Calibration
Summary vary quite a bit. What is the proper way to interpret them?

Re: [Elecraft] Mobile Radio Dreams

2016-12-13 Thread Dick Dickinson
Bill - I'm glad you brought this up.

I've been using the Yaesu FT-857D mobile for a number of years. The number
one thing I appreciate about it is the remote head aspect. It is suitably
sized to sit atop the column of the steering wheel. The controls are all
accessible through the top open half of the steering wheel. Eye deviation
from the roadway is minimal. It does not in my case block information on
the dashboard.

One consideration that might be a further improvement is a heads up display.
A heads up display is one that reflects off the inside of the windshield
from a top of dashboard mounted display. Controls might still be
incorporated into a unit that could mount atop the steering wheel column or
other convenient location.

HF Mobile operation is important to me. I notice that Yaesu's new FT-891
follows the configuration of the 857D (though without 2m and 440MHz) with a
larger display area and an improved menu system. While I enjoy HF mobile,
my perception is that it is on the decline in popularity. I don't see HF
mobile setups unless I'm in the realm of a Hamfest.

Best,
Dick - KA5KKT
---
A few weeks ago I passed a car with the license WA6HHQ and it
got me to thinking: What if Elecraft made a radio specifically
designed as a mobile radio? Here are some of my ideas:

It would have a UI designed to minimize driver distraction. This
UI might draw inspiration from the 5 button AM radios of old,
which could tune pre-sets without looking at the radio.

It would:
Cover 80M-6M with 2M and 70cm being nice additions.

Be available with 50-100W maximum output

Have a small control head with a separation cable if necessary.

Have a "hands free" operation option

One intriguing idea would be to use the smartphone interfaces
available in some newer cars to provide the entire radio UI in a
form that is well integrated into the auto console. Or at least
use it as a panadapter display.

[Elecraft] K3 - RF Gain / S-Meter

2016-09-24 Thread Dick Dickinson
I have an early, but updated K3. I used to be one who thought the K3 was
often uncomfortable to listen to. In the recent past while I have reset my
AGC values AND started cutting back the RF Gain. For me this has made all
the difference in listenability. However I find something curious with the
action of the K3 S-Meter relative to the RF Gain setting.

My daytime 40 meter background noise level runs S-6 and sometimes S-7 with
the RF Gain full clockwise. That's per the K3 S-Meter which is calibrated
with the XG1 on 40 meters. When I turn the RF Gain counterclockwise (down)
the S-Meter reading of background noise drops down to about S-4/5 when the
knob is at about 1:30. This seems to be a sweet spot from a couple of
points of view. Obviously background noise coming through the speaker is
less. Signals above the noise level continue to come through fine. Turning
the RF Gain further counterclockwise causes the S-Meter reading to rise as
expected. The sweet spot seems to may vary a little by band / background
noise level.

This action of the S-Meter relative to the RF Gain is different from what I
have experienced with previous radios. I can understand the S-Meter not
'rising' while the RF Gain is turned down...until the RF Gain action begins
to exceed the full CW reading, but I don't understand it lowering the
S-Meter level while moving CCW...to a point and then rising. In my
experience with analog radios don't recall encountering a dip in S-Meter
reading when the RF Gain is turned down.

Perhaps this is common in the K3, but it is new to me. I find it easy to
tune to a dead spot on the band and find the null in the S-Meter level. I
do really enjoy listening now in this sweet spot area and it seems I'm
listening to 12dB or so less noise.

Is this common for the K3 and is it somehow different from other / analog
rigs?

“Bad analogy. The 2 X 4 inch measurement of a piece of construction lumber

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Centric

2016-05-02 Thread Dick Dickinson
Other than my mobile rig, I run Elecraft. I appreciate being able to keep
up with the news regarding Elecraft products.

However I appreciate that Eric has chosen to let this reflector be somewhat
open to general radio topics. By nature that sometimes includes discussion
of non-Elecraft products.

I have seen this reflector as much of being a 'club' rather than a forum
with a strictly focused on Elecraft. That factor may be useful for many,
particularly newer operators who might have questions along the lines of
antennas, operating circumstances and conventions, as well as accessories
(Elecraft or other).

I know it would be awkward for me to manage the forum via email. I choose
to view it via qth.com/pipermail. This is very easy and manageable for me.
I mostly keep up with the forum in a linear, time wise fashion. That my
browser highlights the last read post after I've selected it, I always know
where I've left off. http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft... is sent
as my homepage for my browser. Your experience may differ.

I'd like to encourage Eric and the powers that be to continue the somewhat
open perspective here, though I realize that one's mode of reception of the
posts may cause consternation for some.

Were I to offer complaint on content, it might be when people begin to
hammer at length on matters having to do with 'my radio is better than
theirs' when it relates to items well to the right of the decimal point.

In general, I think the somewhat open approach that has been allowed serves
amateur radio and Elecraft well.

Re: [Elecraft] Yaesu M.D. 100 on a boom

2015-09-30 Thread Dick Dickinson
Ed -

I use an MD-100 in a boom, though I don't rely on the MD-100 base for PTT.

The Base of the MD-100 Mic takes the same type connector as the MIC input on
the front panel.

There may be a few options for you.

1) Consider wiring the Element of the MD-100 through an 8-pin connector
to a 1/8" phone jack to the rear panel of the K3. Leave the MD-100 base
plugged in and use the PTT on it. I 'think' that will work.

2) As 1) above plus wire an RCA plug to a desk, or panel mounted
switch. Plug that into the rear PTT jack on the rear of the K3. There are
some nice, fair sized bi-position switches that can be used. One position
is momentary contact, while held in place. The other is locked in place
until disengaged. ON-OFF-MOMentary. In this case, the MD-100 Base wouldn't
need to be plugged into the rig.

3) Extending the fixed cable on the MD-100 base that goes to the
MD-100 mic may work as well. That may be achieved by splicing in additional
length of cable or an extended cable with an 8-pin female connector on one
end and a 8-pin male on the other end.

[Elecraft] Icom IC-7300 / Elecraft

2015-09-03 Thread Dick Dickinson
ICOM indicates that the IC-7300 Multi-function knob selections are displayed
on the upper right of the screen. That puts them right there next to the
knob to be 'touched.' While I don't have an experienced opinion on touch
screens, I can see the sense of that setup.

I have frequently thought of a series of three adjacent similar knobs for
selections and settings.

Selection / Setting / Value.

Using knobs that function similar to Shift/LO / HI/Width / Speed/Mic and
CMP/PWR on the K3 might save a knob, but could perhaps lead to more user
error / miss-taps.

I'm not going to attempt to figure out what might go with each knob. The
selection knob might have a few banks in it.

I'll leave the sorting out to those who design interfaces, if there is any
interest.

[Elecraft] Is there a K4 on the horizon? Car radio

2015-04-02 Thread Dick Dickinson
For mobile use, I like a head that is mountable on the steering wheel
column. My current setup allows me to view the display with minimal eye
diversion. Controls can be accessed through the open upper portion of the
steering wheel.

Dick - KA5KKT

The user interface of VHF mobiles does need to be improved "back to the

1940s" for safety so that basic functions are completely tactile -

without need to look at the radio. My Metrum II was mounted under the

driver's seat and could be fully controlled without taking my eyes off

the road. This would also be popular with blind operators, perhaps as an

accessory for their autonomous vehicle.

[Elecraft] K3 build/KPA3 update - can someone measure for me...?

--

Hi All, getting prepped for ARRL DX next weekend and so I decided to

do the KPA3 update on my old K3 (#476). It involves replacing some

pins between the RF board and the KPA3 module to prevent melting.

I did the update and it went reasonably well. The last check is to

measure resistance across the 12V terminals to make sure its not a

dead short. The documentation says it should be over 2000 ohms, but I

measure open circuit. Can someone check for me what they see across

12V terminals on a regular working K3?

This is probably a pretty stupid question but since I didn't build

this K3 I'm not sure what to expect.

Thanks much,

[Elecraft] K3 - perceived RX and TX audio

2015-02-26 Thread Dick Dickinson
Sure, merely understanding the words is fine when dealing with brief
exchanges of call signs and signal reports. And pumped up, penetrating
audio can help pump up your adrenalin if one finds excitement in sporting
activities.

The quality of comfort is a factor for many when participating in extended
conversations.

If you find no discomfort in what you hear, that's fine, but don't dismiss
those who appreciate listening to audio without discomforting artifacts.

Some of us enjoy nothing more than an engaging conversation. The acoustical
qualities can be a significant factor in that pleasure.

A meal can be better with dinnerware and utensils as opposed to using your
hands to eat out of a paper bag.

Best regards,

[Elecraft] [K3] Manual Notch Reconsidered

2014-07-31 Thread Dick Dickinson
A recent post mentioned that the frequency and bandwidth of the K3 notch
could be controlled. If the bandwidth of the manual notch can be
controlled, I am unaware of how to go about it. I've found it broader than
I think it needs to be. I recall seeing it applied to an SSTV waterfall and
it was 100Hz wide (or wider?) with a flat bottom.

We've been talking about some features that may not be quite what we like
them to be. I got a good compliment on the K3 VOX in the past couple of
days.no clipping of the startup of VOX whatsoever. As well, there are a lot
of stations that could benefit from the type noise gate the K3 uses.

Is there a way to limit the posts that are sent to my email address to a

specific subject? I see there the option is there in the member page, but it

isn't able to be changed. I would only be interested in KX3 posts but I get

about 500 posts a day on all elecraft subjects. It would be nice to pick the

topics I was interested in rather than get the bulk delivery.

[Elecraft] K3 - Ergonomics or ?

2014-04-03 Thread Dick Dickinson

In general, I don't take exception to the comments regarding K3 ergonomics.

One of my areas of interest for enhancements lays in the realm of received /
perceived audio. Often I've seen the audio qualities of the K3 mentioned.
Included in the aspect of receive audio are DSP / Noise Reduction, Noise
Blanking, Notch and more.

Some 6 to 8 months back, it seems there was mention of revamping the K3
innards rather than a successor rig...K4 or such. I think the notion may
have included replacement circuit boards that might be done at the factory
or perhaps by the owner. The post didn't generate a lot of ongoing comment
as I recall, but I think such a notion might well interest a good portion of
the K3 owner base.

Of course there is a lot to be considered. Important is the likely cost to
the owner and the profitability for Elecraft along with the degree of
complexity from a number of points of view.

The KX3 has provided some enhancements over the K3. The direct-to-digital
RF conversion and I/Q outputs come to mind. I've not had personal
experience with the KX3, so I can't say if there have been enhancements to
the received / perceived audio. Perhaps someone with a K3, an KX3 and
suitable external audio amplification and speakers can comment on that.

In any event, I hope the discussion of K3 Ergonomics would not derail
consideration of a revamp of the K3 internals.

Best regards,

Dick - KA5KKT

Re: [Elecraft] Noise level..?

2014-04-01 Thread Dick Dickinson
Why do it any other way? This thread is about as noisy as any of the rest
of it.

I use the reflector without emails. No sorting, no filters, no clogged
mailbox. I check the list on-line and only click on what holds interest
to me. In general, if it doesn't involve the K-Line - I have no interest
and just scroll past. Very easy - no technology involved!

Re: [Elecraft] OT ... Coax DC Isolator

2014-02-11 Thread Dick Dickinson
Are there possible precautions to take when running DC through a remote
antenna (coax) switch that may go to ground when the power is off?

Re: [Elecraft] K3/K2: cumulative HF xcvr review from eHam

2013-12-25 Thread Dick Dickinson
With 2 more reviews, the venerable Icom IC-751A would top the list at 5.0.

Re: [Elecraft] Software to graph antenna SWR

2013-12-16 Thread Dick Dickinson
K3_EZ will do that with a K3. It's a Windows program.

Some time ago I had this program that you could use to sweep the antenna and

produce a printout of the SWR among other utilities for the K3. I have

googled but cannot locate it anybody remember what it was called? It was a

windows program.
