Re: [Elecraft] K3: Noise reduction
Wayne, At least, thank you for your kind, civil response to our plea. I knew this thread would degenerate to "he's a stupid ham that can't run his rig", but you didn't go there. Don't do anything more as it seems only two of us have a problem, and that's certainly a minority. I'll either learn to do what I want to do with the K3/P3/W2 or I'll sell them and use the other rigs that work for me. Re: [Elecraft] 120V vs 240V
I guess I'm getting old. Sorry about the blank message!! Don, I found something interesting in doing some "remodeling" and replacing receptacles. The old ones were ivory, and with the new white trim, I had to please the XYL, hi. Anyway, since my wiring days in the sixties, I have avoided the "backstab" type receptacle myself, knowing that spring HAD to wear out over the years. I found some receptacles at Lowe's, made by Cooper Industries that had the "backstab" feature. I was going to wrap the wire under the screws as I always have BUT these new back entry plugs now use the screw on the side to run a clamping mechanism against the wire, making a really good connection!! If one looks at the new plugs, you may be pleasantly surprised to find this new feature (maybe old by now, but my first experience with it). I did a "test room" with that method, but will do the rest of the place the old fashioned way, hi. By the way, off topic, but I invested in one of the IBM refurbished computers you recommended and LOVE it!! It looks like a new machine, has a LOT of memory and a HUGE hard drive, 2 serial ports and a host of USB ones, 3 1/2" floppy dirve, quiet fan and just works well in the shack. Thanks for making the recommendation. With the "extras" on it, I still didn't spent $300, which is phenomenal to me. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Interfaces
I am not what you would call a "computer guru", in fact not really very computer literate at all, but having used the MicroHam MicroKeyer II for several months now it seems VERY easy to interface to my station. I switch back and forth between three radios, K3, Yaesu, and Icom, and find all I need do after initial setup is change the cable and "fine tune" settings to match the particular radio. It couldn't be any simpler. Later I will add the PW-1 to the mix and be able to use it with any of the three rigs. I do use FSK religiously for RTTY, so don't face the audio level problems there, but PSK-31 does and I didn't have any trouble there either. It DID take reading the manual and playing some initially, but once the "language" of the supplier is known, and the peculiarities of the rigs are known, it is pretty simple. If I do run into a problem that I cannot decipher, the manufacturer is quick to reply with suggestions and page numbers of the manual, so I can learn what I did wrong. I like that approach (i.e., I am NOT told the RTFM, but given better clues). I have no connections to MicroHam, SignaLink, etc etc, but feel their interfaces receive a bad rap at times. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 with Microham Keyer 2
Chris, I wouldn't describe myself as particularly computer literate, but that said, marrying the K3 and MKII was a snap. Just buy the proper cable when you get the MKII, plug it all in as labeled, then follow the step by step instructions. I sold the first MicroKeyer I bought years ago only getting it to work when my computer literate friend was here!!! This is FAR better and works well. I can even switch from radio to radio by just changing cables and moving a few items in the router software. Re: [Elecraft] Need for advice was; noise reduction
Wayne, You didn't ask me, but I'm going to break my rule and respond to this one. The K3 has been a unique radio in a respect that you may be overlooking. It has "evolved" over many years, with some of the "knowledgeable" guys owning low serial numbered rigs, and they don't see what we are faced with as new owners. My K3 is serial number 4076, and my background is more into analog rigs, but I have owned many "DSP" based rigs, from the IC-775/TS-870 era up. I used to do mostly digital (RTTY), but find upon this return to ham radio that RTTY rag chewing is sort of a thing of the past and I am re-learning SSB and hopefully CW in the future. All that said, the K3 manual, to this old guy, looks more like a reference book for the low serial numbered guys that have helped this fine radio evolve over the years. It doesn't explain button/knob functions like you would for a new user, but is a fine reference for those who have helped determine just what that knob/button would do. I HAVE read through the manual, but it has changed three or four times since I bought my K3 in February of this year, and I haven't taken time to read through them all to see what the differences are. What I think "MIGHT" clear up things somewhat is a Mode section that actually teaches you what default settings are, and what "enhancements" changes might make to your operation, by mode. In the front of the manual where you try to explain what each knob/button does, refer the user to the "advanced page" by mode. In other words, if a control does different things in SSB, CW or DATA, refer the user to the appropriate page by mode for further learning. I think that would take some of the fatigue we are seeing as new users. We haven't been here since the birth of the K3, and anyone can see in a day's read of the reflector that the archives are nearly useless for learning, as each subject gets so convoluted that you can search forever and not find what you want. I am retired, have lots of time, BUT I want to spend my remaining years operating, not reading all the time, hi. When I have asked about things on the reflector, the common answer from the "experts" is RTFM!!! That's lots of help. I hope others will chime in, but the manual needs to become a "new user's guide" as well as a nice reference for the old timers. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Purchase and Accessories Questions
Mark, The KUSB is Elecraft's USB to serial adapter. I would try yours first to see if it works before buying another one. Elecraft's uses FTDI chips now and works well, however. I use the 400hz 8 pole filter for RTTY, for PSK 31 you will probably want to see the whole range of avaliable stations, so the SSB filter would be better in my mind. The 2.7 khz filter is 5 pole, the 2.8 is 8 pole. I chose the 2.8 8 pole as you do all the transmitting through it and I want a clean signal. The cable from the K3 to the 8410, which I also use, is a simple RCA to RCA cable shielded (Radio Shack or others). No need to buy an expensive interface. Works quite well at whatever power level you choose!! 73 and good luck with your K3, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I gave up on them after 18 months and was glad I could sell mine. Anyone getting into the "software radio" business needs programmers, and Ten Tec has little to no staff in that area. Regardless what they say, no one from Ten Tec actively monitors reflectors. Re: [Elecraft] RTTY IN K3 TERMINAL PROGRAM
I'm with Charles on this request. By simply adding the option for "diddles" on (ltrs or blanks, your choice), you can do what he asks. That keeps feeding either letters or blanks as long as there is no input from the keyboard and keeps things keyed. It HAS to be a simple move and would add value to the terminal program for RTTY chats. Also, if possible, I would like to see an option to choose character out (what I see as default now), word out (to allow those lousy typists like me to correct a word before it goes out), and line out (for those wanting to go back further than one word to make corrections before they go out). Also, that would seem to be simple as you only need to recognize the space bar for word out, and end of line functions for line out. At some point, it would be nice to be able to set line length in configuration or somewhere so our friends still using machines (and there are SEVERAL who do for the fun of it) can put up with us, hi. These simple changes would make the terminal program serve 99.9% of my RTTY needs and I, like Charles, know all about MMTTY and I still have my old HAL gear. This would just be what I would like to use most of the time, a SIMPLE terminal program. A bonus is it won't hurt the contesters' usage at all, hi. Re: [Elecraft] LP Pan versus P3 Panadapters
Paul, I don't see you getting a lot of comments, so I'll throw in a few cents worth, hi. I bought the P3 for several reasons, but the main one is NOT for what it is right now, but what I think it will be over time. It will have VGA output at some time and allow the big screen, and I feel we, as operators will have some input into what is on the display. It will add features as we go that I can't even think of right now. I didn't go the LP Pan or other SDR route as I didn't want to have to buy a high dollar computer to do my hamming. Same reason, among others, that I won't consider the Flex radios. I want a radio, with knobs, not a computer program!! The cost of the computer needed to do SDR right was about the same as the P3 was initially. YMMV, but that's my take. Elecraft remains responsive to our wants/needs, as long as they are reasonable. I have full confidence I won't regret the initial price and price of add-ons as they come. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Mike, That's the way I handle my Alpha 8410's waiting period to come on, I just let her idle while I tune around, hi. As for the KPA-500, perhaps this is a "module", and Elecraft will devise a means of combining 2 of them, so we can put one on each side and still be a balanced, 1kw+, good looking station (wink, wink), hi. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Yamaha CM-500 Headset
Hi all, I too have a nearly new (just in this past week) Yamaha CM-500 headset that I would sell. Asking $45 shipped with all that came with it. I paid over $50 with shipping, used maybe two hours. No original box, as it comes packaged on one of those "impossible for me to unpack" plastic blisters that I always end up cutting off, but I'll pack to make it. NO problem at all with the unit, has a "hot" mic, comfortable headphones and works fine, I am just programmed to use a boom mic and hand PTT switch and prefer that I hear my surroundings as well while I operate. Re: [Elecraft] Very LOW RTTY audio solution and request
Tom, I agree with you, but we are probably in a minority. RTTY has ALWAYS been 2125 Mark and Space 170, 425, or 850 cycles (I'm old, Hz if you must) away from that. If you don't like the pitch of 2125/2295 for 170 cycle RTTY, THEN change it, don't make the "normal" users suffer. There, I said it, hi. I have listened to those tones for so many years I can decode CQ, QBF, RY's in my head by the rhythm. I haven't tried the K3 on RTTY yet, Tom, so I may have to ask you a LOT of questions when I do. I am still using my IC-7700, as RTTY (except the built in encoder/decoder not understanding "word out") is one thing Icom got right on that rig. I'm an "old stick in the mud", still using the old HAL gear mostly, hi. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3][P3] 6m Preamp and P3 on AUX Pwr
I would think we users are getting to a point where a good, automotive relay designed for continuous duty usage would be a good idea here. Simply use the 12v auxilliary power to feed the coil of the relay and let the contacts of the relay feed power from our 12v supplies. I don't remember the stock numbers of the parts, but we used these in an oilfield industrial application a few years ago and had VERY few failures, and when we did, they were readily available local to the unit being used. They have a multitude of mounts so they should be easy to integrate into the shack. That's the route I plan to take, that is if the relay pulls less than 500 mills, hi. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [P3] Firmware Reload
I forgot, in the heat of playing with a new toy, to pass something along that may help others. My P3 came loaded with the latest firmware, so I was happily using it, and having some strange "issues", like excessive display flickering, signals not centered, readout on P3 not matching K3's dial, etc. I was in the midst of reading the calibration section of the manual, loading P3 utility and several other things at once and I just happened to reload the P3 firmware really just to see if all was okay in my cabling. Presto, all those "issues" suddenly went away!!! We too often take firmware for granted, I think, and I suspect I may have had some corruption in the download from the factory. Re: [Elecraft] K3 data decode for dummies?
Andrew, RTTY is the data mode I am most familiar with. There are several schools of thought. My "old school" says set the rate to 45.5 baud and Mark at 2125, shift at 170 IF you want to meet a friend on RTTY and tell him/her where you will be. Otherwise, I guess as some insist here, put Mark wherever you like, shift at 170 cycles and tune on the station you wish to work. We have used the above standards for the 40 years I have been involved with RTTY, and even used to have autostart frequencies with not so stable rigs and made it work, hi. RTTY is also LSB on an SSB rig unless you are using FSK or I guess Data mode on the K3. I have not tried RTTY on K3 yet, as my antenna is down, being refurbed after being destroyed in the winter ice and the tower is "in progress". If you haven't figured it out when I get back on the air, I'll meet you and we can go from there, hi. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Switching power supplies...yet another comment
In all fairness to the switching supplies, if you are forced to have indoor antennas or close to the ground "stealth" antennas, you might not want to consider them. Of course they will generate noise in those cases. I have decent outdoor antennas and still have to be careful with computer switching supplies and their placement in the shack. I probably have a lifetime supply of heavy, Astron linear supplies, but the size and weight of the Samlex and other supplies is sure getting tempting!! I've looked at the 30 amp version of that, and the price is tempting, for sure, and I like the light weight instead of this 30 lb monster I have, hi. 73, Don, WB5HAK - Original Message - From: "Chris Hembree" To: Sent: Thursday, July 15, 2010 5:39 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 on Order > Well I took the BIG plunge today, K3/100, 2.8 up Grade filter, FM > filter,6m > preamp. > Any recommendation on a power supply? > > Chris W7CTH > > > > > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > No virus found in this incoming message. Wayne, I realize that I'm showing my ignorance, but could you briefly explain how a "dual-passband filter" works in the K3?? I would DEFINITELY be interested in either of the two possibilities you mentioned for my RTTY usage, even though the 8 pole 400 cycle one is pretty good. 73, Don, WB5HAK - Original Message - From: "Wayne Burdick" To: "Jim Brown" Cc: Sent: Thursday, July 15, 2010 1:01 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Let's Try This Again -- was "[K3] ... Re: [Elecraft] eHam.net forum message
This very message and a host of others in the archives are the very reason I own a K3 and have pre-ordered a P3. These guys listen to customer input, respond, and fix things as soon as possible!!! The P3 does NOT do what I really need in its initial form, BUT I am confident after emailing with P3's design engineer that it will, in later updates, do all I need it to do. I would never have this confidence with the major three manufacturers of ham gear!! I have been a year trying to get Icom to make one, simple firmware change to make the IC-7700 more user friendly on RTTY and am being stonewalled. Thanks Bill, Joe and Alan for your observations. I didn't mean to continue a thread into oblivion so that's the reason I changed the title, hi. Now it has changed into T/R switching. Oh well, that's the nature of the reflector and a reason it is SO hard to search the archives. Joe, I'll try Olivia and see what I find. I just miss the old commradery (sp?) of the former, talkative RTTY bunch. It has nothing to do with being old, as I was younger and most of them had full time jobs and were busy building besides. It was just a gone and forgotten time, I guess. 73 all and enjoy your K3. [Elecraft] Short QSO's (was Re: 6M CW)
Although I understand the reason for shortness on 6m QSO's, I really don't see the reason on HF bands and I am joining you in lamenting the loss of them, Sandy. I spend DAYS looking for a good, RTTY ragchew, unless one of my old friends shows up on frequency. I had been off the air mostly, living other parts of life, but when I returned in 2004 or so, long gone were most of the long winded RTTY guys of old, and I miss it. I thought maybe it was a change in technology, so geared up for PSK, but got the very same name, location, gear, bye, CUL QSO's there too. I'll keep looking though, there have to be some of the "old guys" still alive and looking. Also, I was making a few converts on 20m RTTY before a winter ice storm took the quad down, so maybe I can "grow" some when I get the quad repaired, hi. 73, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] A few questions before ordering the K2 kit...
Thomas, I see a couple of very informative messages in reply to your questions, so I won't repeat but one has really not been answered simply. The APP connector is short for Anderson Power Pole. Google that and you will get an education on a connector set that is becoming a defacto standard. I have the K3 and love it so far, but am resisting the strong urge to build the K2 "just for the fun of it", having begun as a new ham many years ago building Heathkits. I miss the fun of that, and, although the "building" of the K3 was fun, it doesn't match the smell of rosin in the shack, hi. The main thing, Thomas, is to ENJOY your trip as a radio amateur. I have loved my 38 years in amateur radio and have many friends I would never have made without it. It has become a valued part of life for me. 73 and welcome to a good list, Don, WB5HAK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KAT500 (was "Auto Tuner")
Wayne, In conjunction with the external tuner, has any thought been given to allow those of us who opt to not buy the internal tuner to use the "Antenna 2" by way of some sort of kit to open it up?? Is that even a possibility?? I nearly always run an amp of some sort for less stress on the basic rig and low power out on amp so it isn't stressed either. For that reason, and the use of ladder line antennas here, I didn't get the internal tuner, but sure would like to be able to access that extra antenna output. I am continually amazed at how well you guys read the pulse of the group and respond to our needs. You could easily become a "one stop shop" for me.
