Re: [Elecraft] Navigator and K3
I've been using the Navigator with the K3 for a couple of years now and am totally satisfied with it (well almost, see below)! I bought the interface cable from US Interface (which I recommend) and it works great. All the K3 FW upgrades go straight thru with no problem. If you already have the Navigator you know that the setup takes somewhat of an effort to get all the virtual com ports set up. But once that's done is runs like a champ. Here is the "almost": I run primarily CW and the built in Winkeyer works OK but there is one problem I have run into. I can't seem to get full QSK to work with the Navigator/Winkeyer/K3. There is always a slight break-in delay even with full QSK set on the K3. It's not usually a problem with normal operation but does effect contesting or DX chasing. I haven't tried to track down a fix for this thru the Navigator group. I usually just switch to the K3 keyer if I really need the QSK. I am sending a copy of this reply to the Navigator group so maybe Clint or someone over there can shed some light on the problem. Re: [Elecraft] K144xv for K3 and noise figure
Guys, Keep in mind that the XV144 stand-alone transverter only covers the bottom 2MHz (144-146) of the band and would be great for weak signal work with either the K2 or K3 because of its low noise figure higher power whereas the internal K144XV for the K3 covers the entire 144-148 MHz band but with lower power and somewhat worse noise figure. Make your choices according to your needs. [Elecraft] KIO3 Not Working
I started to download the new firmware and the computer wasn't talking to the K3. I have rebooted everything and still no communication. I have tried with two computers, one with the USB adapter and the other straight serial, still no luck. Checked the K3 Config:KI03 and all I get is 'nor', no other options. The manual isn't very clear on what options will show with no transverter attached. The ports on the both computers work with other devices. The K3 (#123) has been flawess 'til now. Re: [Elecraft] New quirk on year old K2 receive
John, The flashing "F" means the the "Fast Play" function is on. This function allows you to access the message memories 4,5&6 without pressing the "MSG" button first. It is probably assigned to one of the "PFn" buttons which, if I remember correctly, is the only way to turn it on. Try press and hold on both the "PF1" and "PF2" button. If fast play is assigned to either one the display will toggle between "FPLy OFF" and "FPLy ON". Or press "MENU" and scroll to the "PF1" and "PF2" items. One of them is probably set to "FP on". This is all coming from memory which is dangerous at my age! Hope this helps. I downloaded the new K3 utility this morning so I could upgrade the K3 firmware. The MCU V1.58 loads OK but the DSP V1.48 won't load. Jerry, That's the same method I use with the exception of the "hold-down" portion. Years ago I bought a "Third-Hand Jig" from RS that has 'gator clips attached to movable arms. I place this jig on a sheet of typinger, printer paper and hold the wound toroid with one of the 'gator clips. This not only holds the coil steady but acts as a heat sink so the toroid and wound wire doesn't heat up to much. I start at the core end and work my way out to the end of the wire and the solder blob and burnt enamel just falls off the end of the wire onto the paper. Makes clean up easy too! One thing for sure, the solder blob method makes the phrase "snortin' solder" come to life!! I also use a circuline mag lamp between me and the work that keeps (most of) the smoke out of my face. BTW, I use a Weller with a 700 degree tip and have never had to scrape the enamel with the wire provided by Elecraft. It takes a few seconds to melt the enamel but it will melt at that temp. If memory serves (and at my age it often doesn't) they use a 600 degree thermaleze coated wire. Re: [Elecraft] P3 forgets set ranges in Fixed Track mode (WARC)
Bill, I’ve had the same problem with my P3. I keep the spans on 50kHz on all bands and the problem seems to occur on the WARC bands with the odd limits (17m and 12m). It may have something to do with odd splits, i.e. 17 meters, 18.068 - 18.118 is 50kHz. In the last several weeks I have been chasing the W1AW/x stations on all modes and changing bands quite frequently. I can’t pin down exactly when it happens but it apparently happens when switching down from 10 or 15 meters. The WARC bands revert to the even 50kHz spans, i.e. on 17 meters the span changes to 18.050 to 18.100. The same thing happens on 12m. It’s really been a PIA in the last few weeks and it happens multiple times daily. [Elecraft] KDVR3 Sound Quality Problem

[Elecraft] P3 - Appearent P3 Anomoly
Guys, My P3 has developed a problem that appears to be some internally generated noise that shows up on the screen but doesn't come from the K3. Below is a link to a video I made this morning for a visual description of the problem. After the P3 has warmed up it will disappear. It will gradually migrate from right to left (higher to lower in freq) and eventually either disappear or go out of range of the display. It doesn't to interfere with reception even when the signal is within the noise boundary. This problem seems to occur on all bands from 40 thru 10 meters. I haven't seen it below 40 meters. There is no ground lug on the P3 but the K3 itself is well grounded. http://www.flickr.com/photos/43690708@N02/5684413732/ I didn't show it on the video but when the Select knob is turned even with no function displayed the noise spreads out over a much wider span but then re-concentrates after the knob is left alone. The P3 has performed flawlessly up to this point. This problem seems to be superficial in that is doesn't otherwise affect the operation of the unit. Any ideas from anybody especially you guys in Aptos!
