[Elecraft] K3 Hanging on mode switch

2021-02-27 Thread Donald Wines
My trusty old K3, SN 123 in operation almost daily since late 2007, and has
performed almost flawlessly since. It has been updated regularly with most
options and could be considered “almost K3S”. It has been back to the
mothership once about 10 years ago for a quick fix due to lightning ESD.

Recently though when changing modes from CW to USB/LSB or from DATA to AM
it hangs in transmit. A quick press of the “XMIT” button clears the problem
and it operates normally after. It doesn’t hang on any other mode switches
but if I change bands from a band on CW to a band on USB/LSB it will hang.
On two occasions going from DATA to AM it froze completely and wouldn’t
respond to any button and had to be powered off at the power supply.

Here’s what I have tried so far:

1. Since the “gold pin” mod hasn’t been done, I pulled the front panel,
cleaned all the pins and replaced it. No change.

2. After it froze completely the second time, I forced an EEINIT, reloaded
a good configuration. No change.

So it appears to be a hardware problem. I haven’t contacted Elecraft yet
because they seem to be in flux right now due to COVID and the push to get
the K4 out the door. Plus, I do have a quick work-around as long as I avoid
the total freeze.

So if anyone has had a similar problem and solution or could tell me where
to look I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Don, K5DW

Apparently they are a two person company located in Oakwood, TX a small
town of about 3000 good folk located about an 1-1/2 hours southeast of my
QTH in Bullard, TX.
You can check them out here

The price on this thing is almost $10K.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 Question

2019-08-18 Thread Donald Wines
Grant,

Something else I've noticed since getting the KXPA100 is the Select knob on
the PX3 gets flaky if it's turned too fast. It seems to work fine if you
turn it slowly. For instance when setting the Ref Level if the Select
control is turned very fast the display just jitters and doesn't change the
level. But when turned at a very slow rate the level changes appropriately.
I didn't notice this behavior before I put the KXPA in line.

You might try that and let me know what happens.

Thanks,

Grant,

Don’t know if it’s normal behavior but my setup is exactly like yours and the
behavior is the same. Especially noticeable at a high tuning rate. I bought the
KXPA100 from an individual but it had never been used, essentially new.

[Elecraft] FS: Navigator Sound Card Modem

2018-11-16 Thread Donald Wines
Since I no longer am much interested in the digital modes and need to clear
some space, I am offering for sale a US Interface Navigator sound card
modem. This is the older model (silver) before Timewave bought out US
Interface. It works great and is a 9 out 10 cosmetically (some minor rub
marks on the top) and has always lived in a non-smoking environment. It has
Winkey keyer built-in and the firmware has been upgraded to Rev. B. (CD
included.) It includes three (3) sets of cables: 1 each for Elecraft K3,
Elecraft KX3 and Icom 706MKIIG. The K3 cable set is for the older K3's with
the standard RS232 nine pin serial interface. The others should work out of
the box.

Also included is a full set of documentation.

See pictures here: *https://tinyurl.com/yayeqzly
*

Asking $180 for everything listed above shipped to any CONUS location by
USPS Priority Mail.

If interested please reply to my private email address: k5dwdon at gmail
dot com. I'll be glad to answer any questions I can.

Thanks for the BW!

Re: [Elecraft] (no subject) (HRD and K3 and VISTA)

2010-07-03 Thread Donald Wines
Susan, are you running through an interface? What kind of cable are you
using? HRD requires that you use a comm port that is not shared with other
processes.

I'm running Vista on a Dell laptop with HRD v5/DM780 through a Navigator
interface to the K3. Have no problems except as Nick has already noted. HRD
freaks if it loses comm with the radio.

If I recall correctly that microphone is an electret. You have to set
the bias on the mic setting for it to work.

Go to Main:Mic Sel setting. While in that setting hit 2 to turn bias
 on
or off. You may also want to play with sensitivity setting (hi or lo)
by hitting 1. See manual p.20. These settings are available for front
 and rear mikes.

What filter is set? If you have a narrowband filter installed in
addition to the stock 2.7K filter, and if you have been working
CW/digital modes with a narrowband filter, and if the settings somehow
got messed up on the mode-by-mode filter selection, you might be trying
to transmit SSB through a narrowband filter. the K3 doesn't like that.

After seeing a recent post about building a K2, I'm wondering how many
 K3
owners have actually built a K2? It would seem that some kind of right
 of
passage should be given to those people that have built a K2 or even a
 K1,
before purchasing a K3. Maybe a sticker that they can put on their K3
 or a
special certificate to hang on the wall? Of course, I'm excluding
 those that
can't build because, of physical dissability. I'm just thinking of all
 the
fun that they missed building a K2 and perhaps they would appreciate
 the K3
even more. Just trying to stir the pot. ;-)

Jackson Harbor Press has a little converter for 10-300kHz here:

It can be configured for 80 meters or 30 meters and could probably be

Very inexpensive and works great!

[Elecraft] OT: Items For Sale

2009-11-10 Thread Donald Wines
I'm doing a little shack cleaning and have a few items that are surplus to
my needs.
I am offering them here before I put them on that auction site.

 Elecraft KRC2 Band Decoder - $140
Assembled and tested but never used
Includes uninstalled parts for the ACC option

 Elecraft T1 20W Automatic Antenna Tuner - $110
  Assembled, tested and used twice
Works great with all those single band QRP rigs

 NorCal QRP Power/SWR Meter Kit - $75
Unbuilt kit, still in original box
0 - 9.9 Watts, LCD display plus analog meter
  Full description here: http://www.norcalqrp.org/ncpowermeter.htm

MFJ-868 Giant SWR/Wattmeter HF(20W,200W,2KW) - $110
  Less than 1 year old
  Modified with Power-on indicator and
switch to turn panel lamps on/off.
Works great, just too big for my small shack.

ATMEL 8-bit RISC Microcontroller Development Kit - $125
  ATSTK500 - Development board for 8 to 40 pin microprocessors ($79 New)
ATSTK502 - Expansion Board for 64 pin microprocessors with LCD support
($99 New)
Includes one AT90S8515 40-pin chip and one ATMEGA169L 64-pin chip
These boards have had very little use. Will throw in an AVR Butterfly.
($20 New)

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Monitoring outgoing PSK31 Signal

2009-09-22 Thread Donald Wines
I believe the IMD meter is still available here:

There used to be a very useful tool called the IMD Meter designed by

which you could buy from US Interface. Sadly it appears to be no longer
available since the owner of US Interface became a SK. You can still
 find
information about it if you use Google. If anyone knows where you can
 still
get these things I'd like to know, because I have one and wrote about
 it on
my website, and I'm often asked where you can get them from.
