Subject: [Elecraft] Dynamic Mics on K3

I'm trying to use a dynamic mic with the K3 (KIO3 MIC INPUT high gain)
but I can't be satisfied with the modulation (I'm listening with another
radio on 144 MHz using an XV144 with the K3).
If I keep the compression level below 15 the mod is awful. Tried with 4
or 5 different dynamic mics, but the results are almost the same.
I made a couple of ipothesis:
Balanced Mics doesn't match too well with the unbalanced input of the radio.
The mic level is too low (I tried to push with mic gain and TXG VCE, but
no results so far).
Any suggestion?

I suddenly developed a RF power output problem with my K3:(

The power output just drops to zero. A quick power cycle fixes the problem
temporarily. (not enough time for the K3 to cool off)
These are the things I have done so far.
There is no error message.
If I don't use for the transmitter for quite a while it continues to work much
longer.

1. It happens on any band and with different antennas.
2. It happens at 5W as well as 100W
3. It happens when transmitting into a dummy load.
4. It happens in SSB as well as CW.
5. Antenna port 1 or 2

Has anyone else seen this problem?
Can you think of anything else I should try?

Hi Werner:
The Yaesu MD-1 desk microphone works just fine on my K3 with excellent
transmit audio and plenty of it. So I would think that you need to make sure
that your setting on the K3 are correct for it. I have also used the Shure 444D

I'd like to add a desktop microphone to my K3. I have left a Yaesu MD-1
from earlier times, and made a cable for the K3. It works, but the modulation
is rather low volume in comparison to the Heil HC-5 I use.
What about the Kenwood microphones, like the MC-60 or MC-80?
Are there any recommendations or experiences with these types?

thank you for your input!

Re: [Elecraft] ESD sensitive tuning knob

2009-01-10 Thread Fern Rivard
Sig:
I had the exact same problem with my K3 shortly after I received it.
What is happening is that the encoder for vfo A is NOT grounded properly. What
you'll have to do, is remove the vfo A knob and then the nut and washer holder
the encoder to the front panel and very carefully remove a bit of paint just on
the edges of the hole where the encoder goes thru so that the star washer will
bite into the front panel to give you a proper ground. You may want to protect
the front panel close to that area with some masking tape just in case your
tool, to scrap a bit of that paint off, happens to slip and this way you won't
damage the front panel.
  Good luck from Fern VE7GZ

Subject: [Elecraft] ESD sensitive tuning knob

I have not posted very often to this reflector even though I get and read the
daily digests, so I hope someone can be of help.
Since I got my K3 in February of last year, I have repeatedly had a problem
that seems to be ESD related when USING my K3. We are currently experiencing
some cold weather and this makes the problem more evident, thus my assumption
that it is ESD related and this posting.

When I sit down to use the radio (which I now have on an ESD protective mat) I
can almost always expect the radio to go through a rapid reboot (it turns off
and then on) and lands on a new frequency as soon as I touch the main tuning
knob. If I touch anything else on the radio, including the case, this rebooting
does not occur. Only the main tuning knob seems to be involved. If I ground
myself before touching the knob, the problem does not occur. If I am sitting
there for a while and just move the chair (A Herman Miller) after grounding
myself and then I touch the knob it reboots the radio.

The knob is not metal and I don't understand this weird action. I have resorted
to wearing a wrist strap that is grounded (it comes with the mat), but that is
really very annoying, especially during long sessions, like a contest. I have
been using all sorts of radios in this station for the past 29 years and my K3
is the only one that has ever had such a problem. Any ideas??

[Elecraft] re elecraft mics

2008-11-05 Thread Fern Rivard
Good morning Erik: If you would like a good comparison between a dynamic mic
and the MH-2 electret mic, I would be glad to do it with you. I am using a
dynamic mic normally used with a commercial vhf/uhf mobile which also has the
UP/DOWN keys and have compared with the electret MH-2 hand mic and there is
really no comparison. With the MH-2, I have to fiddle around with the transmit
audio equilizer while the dynamic mic is perfect as is.Now a problem with the
MH-2 is that the curly cord is way too stiff while the dynamic mic that I use
has a nice long super flexible curly cord. I have also tried a Kenwood dynamic
hand mic but found that the audio from that mic really sucked as it has way to
much bass which can be compensated some but it still is no match for my
commercial hand mic. 73 from Fern with K3 #412

When I received my MH-2, I almost put it up for sale because it is so bulky
in the
hand, especially with the non-removable hanger, and yes, the ptt button is a
bit of
a pain. Then I listened to it with the monitor and found that the sound
quality is
much better than the dynamic Kenwood mike I was comparing it to. The MH-2
stays! In fact in other audio applications I have always found that an
electret mike
is superior to a dynamic.

[Elecraft] K3 What mics are proplr using for SSB?

2008-10-22 Thread Fern Rivard
Gene:

Looking at your transmit audio equilizer settings. You would accomplish the
very same effect if you dropped all of your settings by 3 db. In other words
set as follows:
50 @ 0, 100 @ +4, 200 @ 0, 400 @+1, 800 @ -3, 1.2 @ +4, 2.4 @ +4, 3.2 @ +4.

I have been using a commercial dynamic hand mic with the UP/DOWN features which
I do NOT have to use the transmit audio equilizer at all as the audio sounds
best with all settings at zero. This tells me that this mic is a perfect match
for my voice for the K3. I get very similar results when I used my Shure 444D
dynamic mic where again I do NOT require the use of the transmit equilizer as
it sounds best in all settings at zero. However, if I use the optional electret
hand mic from Elecraft then I have to play with the transmit audio equilizer to
make it sound better but it never sounds as good as either of my dynamic
microphones.
Just my 2 cents worth from Fern VE7GZ with K3 serial #412.

I tried 3 mics with my K3, Goldline G4 wide setting, RE20, and Audio-Technica
3035 which needs a phontom pwr supply. All worked great and received
glowing audio reports. All were previously used with a Kenwood ts870 and no
wiring changes were made to the mic plug. I use a hand held PTT switch.

TX eq settings were the same for all: 50 +3, 100 +7, 200 +3, 400 +4, 800-0,
1.2,2.4,3.2 +7.
 Mic Gain Comp.
G4 15 7
RE20 11 22
3035 612

With ESSB turned on (3.5) reports were better yet. I do not use ESSB very
often but very nice to have. My voice I feel is crummy and not very
suitable for bradcasting.

Currently use the 3035, RE20 is with another rig, G4 is backup.

Your milage may vary :>)

Re: [Elecraft] re ON-OFF on K3

2008-08-19 Thread Fern Rivard
Hi Cookie:

I run my K3 on a switching ps but the way it is set up now, this means that
one that to first turn the ps on and then the K3 on. A lot of the commercial
land mobile radios have an option to set the mobile so that as soon as it sees
power from the ignition switch, the radio turns on so the operator doesn't
forget to turn it on. It's an excellent feature and has been around for many
years.

My first thought on the matter is to agree with Fern,
but after thinking about it for a while, pressing the
POWER button is not so hard and it will allow the K3
to turn itself off on low voltage and protect your
battery for battery operations. I have come to think
of this as a good feature even though I am not set up
for battery operation at this time. It will also let
you know right away if you have a loose power
connection or a defective power supply. I vote to
keep the K3 like it is.

[Elecraft] re ON-OFF on K3

2008-08-18 Thread Fern Rivard
A feature that would be nice to have on the K3, is for the radio to
remember to come back on without pushing the ON/OFF switch on the transceiver
when the power was shut off at the power supply end. This is a feature that has
been available on a lot of the commercial land mobile radios for years.
Thanks from Fern VE7GZ with K3 #412

There is a shield that surrounds the RF receiver board that the filters are
mounted to.

The KRX3 has a few other boards that remain in place, but the main shielded
RF board has to come out to change filters.

With practice the shielded board comes out very quickly.

Re: [Elecraft] annoying resonance with internal speaker in K3

2008-08-11 Thread Fern Rivard
Ok Nick, thanks for your comments so I now know that I'm not the only one
with that annoying problem. It sure didn't impress anyone when I did a "Show

a picnic get together. I sure hope that Elecraft takes this seriously as I
would think that they've come across that before and should have a simple fix.

I've got this too. I did some things to eliminate top cover resonances
and then I began to notice this. It's a little more subtle than a
continuous buzzing along with the tones of CW. Sort of a scratchy sound.

I thought it was in the audio, but no, it's gone when I use headphones
or an external speaker. I thought it might be an artifact of
processing, but no, it's still there when I turn processing off. Band
noise is enough to cause the sound on a moderately noisy band (not hard
to find these days). Moderate (but not excessive) volume is required to
being it in. I did note that as I crank up the Lo Cut, the noise
disappears when I cross 250 or 300 Hz.

Thus far, I've removed some of the things I did to dampen the top cover
plate. I removed the top and looked for any loose screws and tapped
various components for sound. Removed the bottom cover and attempted
the same. No luck. I hate the thought of disassembling the entire
front of the rig ...

Yes Stewart, I DO have the stiffener in place otherwise there would be some
exposed holes on the top lid! I temporarily put some black electrical tap
between the contact areas where the top lid meets the radio but that didn't
stop any of it. The resonance appears to come from down below the pa unit. Fern

[Elecraft] annoying resonance with internal speaker in K3

2008-08-10 Thread Fern Rivard
I have a K3 serial #412 which has always had an annoying resonance from the
internals of the radio cabinet somewheres when using the internal speaker. I
thought that it may have been the top lid which did that so I tried to isolate
the top lid by temporarily adding some electrical tape between the top and when
it meets the the top of the radio. However, that did NOT accomplish anything
for me. Has anyone found a permanent cure for that annoying resonance?
This afternoon I took my K3 for a bit of "Show and Tell" to a get together
picnic that our local ham club put on this afternoon. Not having a spare
antenna conveniently laying around, I just took a small roll of telephone
extension wire "4 conductor in it) so I soldered all four wire together with
enough solder residue so that it would just fit inside the SO-239 ant#1 rear
connector. I guestimate that I had an approximate lenght of 35 feet or so of
wire that I strung between trees. I had the K3 on a padded surface on the hood
of my vehicle to make it handy for the audience to see it. I tried the
automatic antenna tuner on all bands from 80 to 10 meters with a resultant
perfect match from 75 meters all the way to 10 meters with 1:0 to 1 match.
Unfortunately band conditios were not very good today.

Anybody have more noise on 10 and 12 meters than the other bands? My K3 s/n
1194 with no ant. hooked up and the 200 amp breaker tuned off and running on a
gel cell has an S2 to S4 noise on 10 and 12 all of the time. S0 to S1 on the
other bands. I also get "static crash" noises intermittently on these bands. I
live 1/2 mile from anyone else and have no such noises on my other rigs with or
without the ant. hooked to them. I believe I have a problem with the K3. It
does it worse when I first turn it on and then quiets down somewhat. Sometimes
it works perfectly.

I have just completed building K3 #1397. It includes the KPA3, KXV3, KBPF3
and four filters.

It went together very well and all is working fine so far except the power
output.

I have done the 50W calibration per band and that produces an output of 50W.
However a setting on the power control of 71W gives 100W out and 76W gives
an actual 120W out. From there the power controls gives an output of up to
and beyond 150W.

I have tried recalibrating and I have downloaded the latest but to no avail.
I have also emailed Elecraft but given it is the weekend I do not expect to
hear from them for a few days.

I wonder if anyone else has had this problem and if so how it was cured. Or
has anyone any suggestions. I think I might take out and reseat the KPA3 in
case it is a bad contact but I don't think it is that.

Hi Gary:

Look no further as I've found that the Shure 444D is the ideal base
microphone for the K3 except for the fact that it does not have the UP/DOWN
keys feature. Now if you want a very nice sound dynamic hand microphone with
the UP?DOWN keys feature, I can help you out with this as I have stock on
those. They are originally made for a commercial land mobile radio but the
resultant transmit is equivalent to that of the Shure 444D desk mic and that is
without even having to use the 8 band transmit audio equilizer.

Hello Again,

I agree with an earlier post from Steve. I will sit under my favourite Gum

that the gods at Aptos are reading these posts closely and that somewhere in
the dark of the night in Aptos an idea will be born to design, build and
market the "perfect" microphone for those of us who have a distinctly "Non

The K3 is now without a doubt the best TCVR on the market, we just need to
have a really good tailor made mic...oh..and while I am adding to the wish

OK, I will climb off my soapbox and journey down into the bomb

[Elecraft] Problems with K3 KXV3 IF Output Level?

Good evening Lyle:

I honestly don't know where you're getting those levels from as I already
reported to you back in April/08 that the levels at the I F output were pretty
well non existent. There is just no tracking of levels at the I F out with what
is fed into the antenna input of the receiver. I even used a 15 db amplifier
from Jack Smith of Clifton Laboratories without any luck as there is simply no
levels to play with there. I believe that Jack Smith also queried you about
that without getting a proper reply as yet from you. I realize that nobody is

I've had 1.8 filters in many different rigs over the years and found that I

[Elecraft] K3 Filter prices

2008-07-03 Thread Fern Rivard
Jerry:

I don't know if you own a K3 or not but if you don't then you should invest
in one before knocking the K3 down. The fact that Sherwood Engineering and
others have found the K3 to surpass the receivers in those expensive radios
like the IC-7800 and the FTDX-9000, should be enough proof of the performance
of the K3. I have owned many different receivers/transceivers over my ham
career and I honestly have not found anything yet to be the receiver in the K3.
Just my 2 cents worth from Fern with K3 #412.

The high prices of the roofing filters for the K3 and optional filters for
other rigs reminds me of a little history.

Nevertheless, I find it especially disturbing having to pay these modern
prices considering that the filters have apparently not been designed or
chosen for good IMD performance or advantageous group delay characteristics.
Also, some filters are reputed to have been defective. Of course, the
filters may not be totally to blame for the mediocre front end performance
of the K3 (compared with the professional-level performance that some of us
had hoped for.)

[Elecraft] re audio distortion when using auto notch on K3

2008-07-01 Thread Fern Rivard
I just spoke to a friend who has K3 vintage #1021 which he received mid june.
He's having severe receive audio distortion when activating the auto notch.
This will happen on signals S9 and stronger. He thinks that the radio has
firmware 1.73 but couldn't figure out to bring it up. How does one bring up the
firmware version?

Re: [Elecraft] Lightness of the K3

2008-06-30 Thread Fern Rivard
Hey you guys, better put a brick on top of it or a chunk of lead to nail it
down to your desk. Most people complain that their rig is too heavy and now we
have the supper light K3 which don't weigh a lot but performs better than any
other rig on the market. This kind of reminds me that years ago the land mobile
import radios had a habit of putting some weights inside their hand mic as most
radio users thought that if the mic was very lite that it then must have been
poor quality. They were simply trying to make them feel heavy like the Motorola
hand mics. I just don't get it with always someone bitchin' and nit pickin'
this awsome performing radio. Please give it a rest and let the folks at
Elecraft do their stuff.
You all have a good day from Fern with K3 #412

My K3 is fully loaded with all currently available options including the
100 watt PA. It sits on a shelf just above the laptop computer used for
logging and other functions. I haven't polished the shelf, but it is
quite smooth.

Aren't you the lucky one? I ran additional tests the K3's susceptibility
to sliding by placing it on top of several other rigs and pushing as in
my earlier "shelf" test. It was unmovable in all of the tests,
apparently without regard to the cost of the subordinate radio. The
relative roughness of the painted surfaces gives the feet on the K3
greater grip than the smooth shelf offers. I'll continue to use the
plastic shelf liner as it is only 1/32 inch thick and a lot cheaper than
an FT1K. Other alternatives, such as roughing up the shelf surface with
sandpaper, don't appeal to me.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 for Field Day at 120W

2008-06-27 Thread Fern Rivard
Mark:

The K3 is rated at 100 watts so why in the world would you want to mess
things up with its spectral purity by running it at a higher power level.
Nobody will ever notice a bit of difference in your signal strength between 100
watts or 120 watts. This is like running an engine that is rated at say 4,000
rpm but you want to run at 5,000 rpm. The excellent specs on the K3 are
garanteed at the 100 watt level so please don't overdrive it unecessarily to
the 120 watt level and give an excellent radio a bad name. If you feel that you
want more power then invest in a linear amplifier.
Just my 2 cents.

Is there any problem with running my K3 on CW at 120W for the 24 hours of field

I would much recommend the new Samlex SEC-1235M switching power

amp meters on the front panel. It's a lot more efficient than the old
linear style of power supplies. Have been using one with my new K3 and

I am running my K3 from an Astron 35M. I experienced an accidental short
circuit on the power supply and I am wondering what everyone else does about
the possibility of accidental shorts from exposed 12V wire lugs or the
exposed pass transistors on the back of power supplies (hot transistor
collectors).

In my case the PS is on the floor and you guessed it close to my shack
ground braid. While fiddling the ground braid touched one of the pass
transistor collectors and everything shut down, no damage done than
goodness. I would like a more permanent solution.

[Elecraft] no issues with output power on ssb!

2008-05-08 Thread Fern Rivard
I fail to understand what the big complaint is with low ssb power with your
K3. My K3 is serial 4XX and have had it for approximately 2 months. My output
power is identical on ssb as it is on cw. I have refused to download any of the

Re: [Elecraft] Heil Microphones

2008-05-01 Thread Fern Rivard
Hi Gary:

I would very much recommend the Shure 444D desk microphone. The
resultant transmit audio using that microphone is so good that you will likely
not even have to use the transmit audio equilizer on your K3. You can usually
pick those desk mics up at flea market for reasonable price. I would definitely
stay away from those overpriced heil cartridges or mics if you want excellent
audio with any radios. I've been there and done that years ago and now use the
shure 444D desk mics with all of my rigs. If you look at the response curve on
that mic, it has a welcome boost around 2300 hz which is what you want in your
audio and gives it an excellent presence. When you get comments that your
transmit audio is great, then it is a good sign that you have it all ok.

I don't want to seem like I am flogging a dead horse, but, has anyone found
a nice base Mic from Heil Sound that works nicely with a K3?

There are many choices ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous and all I
really need is a nice natural sounding base mic for the shack now that I
have a hand mic for field work sorted out.

I have a Silver Eagle that i can do the Heil cartridge change and although
it's still a new mic (last series made) I only want a simple base mic
without the clicks and clunks we hear so often these days. Also I am not
interested in destroying the bands with audio equalisers and such. They are
becoming a nuisance in Australia as the bandwidth they are consuming is
almost obscene.

So if anyone has any ideas it will be greatly appreciated.

Love the K3, still reading the manual but not had to reset yetElecraft,

[Elecraft] re supply of handmic for K3 with UP/Down frequency feature

2008-04-16 Thread Fern Rivard
For anyone interested in getting good quality dynamic hand microphone with
UP/DOWN frequency select, I will be able to supply those. I was never a fan of
elecret microphone and much prefer dynamic microphones. My choice desk mic is
the Shure 444D with excellent dynamic cartridge and finally found a hand mic
with dynamic cartridge with the same excellent audio frequency response. I do
not need to use the 8 band transmit audio equilizer with either of those mics
but I had to boost both the 1200 hz and 2500 hz band by at least 3db if using
the optional elecret hand mic to make it sound ok. Please note that elecraft
has not yet enabled that UP/DOWN feature in their software but it is coming.

[Elecraft] re K3 shut down due to static

2008-04-16 Thread Fern Rivard
A while back, I had a problem where sometimes my K3 would shut down and
immediately power back on when I would attempt to touch the main vfo knob. I
had installed the encoder properly by inserting a star type of washer on both
sides of the front panel to provide a good ground. However, I suspected that it
was likely a poor ground of the VFO A encoder but I didn't really want to
remove the front panel from the rig (to do the ground on the back side of the
front panel) as I had quite a time to install the front panel on there to start
with. So, I removed the PTO A knob, nut and washers and carefully removed just
enough paint around the hole where the encoder was mounted so that the star
type of washer would bite into bare metal to ascertain that I had a good ground
but being very careful as to not scratch the front panel so it would be good
idea to use a bit of masking tape just in case one slips.
Now, I haven't a problem since so I suspect that this is what the problem
was with a poor or none existent ground to the A PTO encoder. Jus thought that
I'd pass this one just in case somebody else experiences the same problem. Now
what I would do if putting a new K3 together is to remove enough paint on the
back side of the front panel around the holes of both the A PTO and B PTO
encoders (I never did have the problem when touch the B encoder).

[Elecraft] re signal level of I F output on K3

2008-04-14 Thread Fern Rivard
What is the level output of the I F output on the K3? I'm trying to use the
Kenwood SM-220 panadaptor with mine but can't get enough output from the I F of
the K3. I've got on loan an I F amp @ 8.215 mhz set at 15 db gain from Jack of
Clifton Laboratories to try and cure the problem but even with the amp I need a
minimum of 200 microvolts signal input to the antenna jack of the K3 before I
can even detect it on the SM-220 panadaptor I F input even with the 15 db
amplifier. Looking at the schematic of the K3, there should be approximately
the same level coming out of the 8.215 khz I F as what the received signal is.
The manual for the K3 does NOT give any information on this. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] Import duties on amateur radio items

You should NOT have had to pay any duty to import that K2 into the USA

the USA. You should apply to your US Customs for a refund.

Yes Mr RF EXPERT didn't have the balls to show his call or name. He
obviously doesn't know how to use his K3 as I haven't experienced any of his
problems.

[Elecraft] K3 power supply question

2008-04-01 Thread Fern Rivard
For goodness sake, what's the big deal with the power pole connectors?
Every ham should have a soldering iron and just use it. There's no need to use
any kind of crimp tool for this. I've soldered mine and they work fine. I can't
understand why there's been so much thread on something so basic so let's hope
that's the end of it!

Well, it would have made things a lot simpler had them made the display
show 6 khz rather than 3 khz. Fern

As Wayne has repeatedly stated, the K3 shows the audio bandwidth -
not the RF bandwidth. Since the AM mode does not support VSB
(vestigial side band) or ISB (independent side band) the reporting
is consistent.

I would very much like to see the K3 support VSB-U and VSB-L (offset
the display/carrier to the lower/upper -6dB points of the filter
respectively and demodulate only the one sideband). That provide
enhanced fidelity and the opportunity to eliminate QRM from one
side or the other. With DSP demodulation it should be relatively
easy to implement.

[Elecraft] re bandwidth select on am mode re K3

2008-03-26 Thread Fern Rivard

On my K3, on ssb mode, I can select the wide am filter position but if I
go to the AM mode, the widest bandwidth shown on the display is 3 khz! Should
it not go to 6 khz as I do have that filter installed and it works on the ssb
and other modes except for the AM mode. Any clarification or help with this
would be greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] Fix the old amplifier......leave the K3 alone!

2008-03-20 Thread Fern Rivard
Hi Ian and the group:

I would suggest that you fix/modernize your old amplier and leave the K3 as
is! The problem is NOT with the K3 but rather your amplifier. Upgrade the darn
linear with more modern faster switching relays and vacuum relays are not that
expensive if you shop around for some good used ones.

That firmware change is surely needed, but there is another inexpensive
way which often works - speed up that open-frame relay.

The circuit shown in the link below uses the existing relay supply rail,
and it will shorten the switching time of most relays by about one-half.
The same circuit will also convert many older amplifiers to a modern
standards +12V, low-current switch interface.

[Elecraft] re best desk mic for K3

2008-03-17 Thread Fern Rivard
Hi Steve:

I would very much recommend getting a Shure 444D desk microphone for your
K3. I am using one with excellent transmit audio. It's a very simply job to
connect the appropriate mic connector to it.

I know this sounds lazy but what desk mic. could I order, plug directly into
a K3 and operate with no wiring changes? Yes, a good one.
Which is better, the 200 hz 5pole or 250 hz 8 pole? Which is best for the
160m cw test?

[Elecraft] re using Kenwood SM-220 panadapter with K3

2008-03-15 Thread Fern Rivard
Has anyone been sucessful in using the Kenwood SM-220 as a band scope
looking at the IF of the K3? The IF's of the kenwood radio or the K3 are very
close with only about 600 khz difference so it's a simple matter to tweek the
oscillator trimmer in the SM-220 to adjust that. However, I get a lot of
interaction between the SM-220 and the K3. I've also tried using a 10 db
attenuator pad but still get erratic results.

[Elecraft] re UP & Down features on mic

2008-03-14 Thread Fern Rivard
Can anyone please enlighten me on whether the UP and Down feature on the
microphone connect work against ground or +8 volts dc. Although I purchases the
optional electret style of hand microphone, I much prefer a good dynamic
microphone. I'm presently using the Shure 444D dynamic desk microphone with
excellent transmit audio report. I've just tried a dynamic hand mic meant for
the TAD line of commercial radios with also excellent transmit audio. This hand
mic also has the UP and Down buttons so I would like to wire that feature but
need to know as to whether it works against ground or + 8 vdc. I will be
selling the factory electret hand mic for anyone interested.
