[Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor Software bug

2012-10-04 Thread G3XDY
Can anyone confirm a problem I seem to be having with the K3 Frequency
Memory Editor software?

If I try to set memory frequencies for transverters in the XVn memories
above 2.3GHz I get an error message, and if I set a memory directly on
the K3 and then read it back with the utility it shows up as a frequency
that has no obvious relationship to that set on the K3. This seems to be
the case for any band above 2.3GHz. A previous version of the utility
worked OK on 2.3 and 3.4GHz but failed on 5.7GHz and above, and the
error message with that version makes me think its an overflow in a 32
bit integer variable used to represent the frequency.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 Operating Tip: APF (audio peaking, filter) for weak-signal CW work

2012-06-27 Thread G3XDY
I find the K3 APF invaluable for weak signal work on the microwaves. In
the microwave NAC contest last night I worked three stations over 600km
on 2.3 and 3.4GHz by aircraft reflection, and the APF really helped pull
the weak signals out of the noise. I generally use 1kHz width for CW and
my ears for the rest of the filtering, but the APF makes a really big
difference on those signals that seem just too weak to copy.

The only disadvantage is the hold rather than tap to switch it on/off -
I often find I end up having to reset the filter width when I try to
cancel the APF .

[Elecraft] K3 External Reference Locking Progress?

2011-03-01 Thread G3XDY
Some months back Wayne posted details of how the external reference locking
would work for the K3, and I recollect that field test was imminent. Since
then it has been very quiet. Having just finished GPS locking my 23cm
transverter it would be nice to get the K3 tied into the system too.

Does anyone know of progress on this option?

[Elecraft] P3 Beta 0050 - Transverter issue

2011-01-16 Thread G3XDY
I have downloaded the new Beta for the K3 and P3, all seems to be working OK
on the HF bands, but I seem to have a problem with the P3 when using my 23cm
transverter on Xvtr Band 4 (converting to 28MHz). On all the other bands I
can get the usual panadaptor and waterfall displays, but on 23cm there is no
spectrum display on the panadapter (for any signal level or ref level) but
the waterfall turns bright red across the screen. When first powered on I
can see what looks like a correct display for a second or two, then it
disappears. The P3 transverter gain calibration setting does not appear to
do anything, having selected band 4, pressing the knob again gives an
onscreen display of nan and turning/pressing the select knob has no
effect. Anyone seen similar symptoms?

2011-01-16 Thread G3XDY
Thanks Alan, a Parameter Initialization seems to have sorted it out OK. By
the way its on P26 of the current manual on the website. The new fixed tune
mode is exactly what I was waiting for, thanks to all at Elecraft for the
continuing evolution.

 John,

That's a strange one. The transverter gain is supposed to default to 25
dB. If you can't adjust it with MENU:XV Gain, then you might try the
Parameter Initialization procedure on page 24 of the manual.

[Elecraft] K3 - Linking the VFOs for CW - SSB switching

2008-05-01 Thread G3XDY
Like a few other VHF and up types I'm patiently waiting for the Auto CW
capability on the K3, where it sends on CW if you press the key and on SSB
if you use the Mic PTT, with a frequency offset between the two equal to the
sidetone frequency.

I have found a useful work around for now is to link the two VFOs with an
offset equal to the sidetone pitch, with the higher frequency one set to CW
REV and the lower on USB. Toggling the VFO A/B button then gives instant
changeover from SSB to CW without having to retune.

I hope to give this a work out in the European VHF/UHF/SHF contest this
weekend.

[Elecraft] Re: Auto CW function

2008-02-23 Thread G3XDY

I think this was covered in the FAQ on 6m topics:

Is it possible to have automatic VFO offset when switching from SSB to CW
to SSB? The VFO offset should be the same as the selected transmit/spotting
sidetone frequency. For example, if you are on 50125.00 kHz USB and you
switch to CW mode, the VFO automatically switches to 50125.70 kHz (if the
specified sidetone frequency is 700 Hz). This puts the audible CW signal in
the USB passband.

AND

Can the K3 be configured to automatically change to CW mode when the key is
activated and to SSB when a PTT line is keyed?

These features will not be in the initial firmware release, but should be
available in the second release. Exact functionality TBD.

That was one reason I decided to order a K3 late last year, primarily for
UHF and above contesting.

I'm not very clear what the second release might mean, but I guess we are
talking about V 2.xx rather than an evolution of the current V1.69 code?

Hello all,
is there some support for request for AUTO CW ON/OFF firmware
function as some rigs are having (FT-897)?

It means SSB mode choosed, RX in SSB mode normally but when Key is
activated (touched for CW sending) there is automatic shift of carrier
and CW is transmitted (as in standard CW mode, SEMI or FULL-BK etc.)
then going back to SSB mode for RX. Hope you understand :-)

This is very useful during UHF/SHF contests (with transverters) when
calling CW CQ but takers are calling in SSB (mostly or very often). No
need for switching mode (you have SSB all the time) and to touch dial
knob to reply etc. Very comfortable and (I hope) not so serious for
firmware.
I know this is very special and on HF bands there is probably no
reason for such function, my experience is based on serious contesting
on higher bands (1296 and up).

If this is already somewhere inside and I missed something and my
sorry for this Q.

[Elecraft] Re: Improvement changes to K2 and K1 transceivers

2007-05-11 Thread G3XDY
I have not seen anyone ask yet for the way the frequency changes when
switching from SSB to CW to be changed. I want to be able to call CQ on SSB,
hear a weak station calling on CW and switch to CW to return the call
without having to retune. This is a fairly common scenario when using the K2
for weak signal microwave work via transverters.

I hope the K3 does have this capability, I will seriously consider changing
my IC756 if that is the case (and if the noise blanker suppresses radar
signals better than the K2 manages).

[Elecraft] Re: Elecraft K2 IF for EME

2006-07-15 Thread G3XDY
I don't use my K2 for EME but it is my main rig for microwave weak signal
work, largely on CW. I tend to use the SSB filter for CW and rely on my
ears for filtering, and have not found filter ripple to be a significant
problem.

On the plus side it is nice to have direct read out of frequencies on the
microwave bands (though truncated), and the ability to offset the display to
take out the microwave LO offsets is very nice. The ability to set different
power levels for each transverter band is also very handy.

On the negative side, my noise blanker won't touch radar QRM, whereas my
IC756 is very good at removing it, so I stick with the 756 on 23cm where
radar is prevalent in Europe.

The other problem is the level of birdies on receive in the European beacon
band in particular (28.8 - 29.0 after transverting). This makes beacon
searching a rather tedious process as it takes a while to hear the keying to
decide if the signals are real or not.

[Elecraft] Re: Installing the K2 Tilt Bail

2005-06-03 Thread G3XDY
I found an easy way to fix the tilt bail was to tie a few turns of string or
thin cord around the bail and tighten it up with a rod looped through the
cord and twisted a few turns - just adjust the tension until the bail fits
easily between the feet, fix the feet and then release the cord.

73

John G3XDY
K2 #4713

I've posted this method several times over the past several years, but it
appears that another posting might be in order.

One of the true TESTS of the Elecraft builder's good nature is the
installation of one of those (damned) tilt bails!!! They are terribly
stiff and will try anyone's patience.

After a couple years of periodic frustration, here's how I now do it...

One of the worst parts of installing the front feet and tilt bail on is
trying to fight the bail while having such a small amount of working
distance between the bottom cover of the radio and the feet. So...

Initially, DO NOT use the 4-40 x 7/16 screws specified in the assembly
manual. Find (somewhere) four (4) 4-40 x 1 screws and use them to install
the feet AND the bail... this extra length gives you MORE than ample
'fighting room' when you are installing the bail. Once the long screws have
been snugged down, and the feet and bail have been properly seated, replace
(one-at-a-time) each of the longer 4-40 screws with the 4-40 x 7/16 screws
specified in the manual. Since the feet and bail will be held securely in
place by the remaining (already tightened) screws, replacement will be a
snap and you won't have that overwhelming urge to heave the radio (or at
least the bottom cover) up against the wall.

Works fer me!

Tom Hammond N0SS
