[Elecraft] Breaking Threads

2008-07-06 Thread George Victor
Please don't take this the wrong way folks, this is just my opinion.

I feel that if a thread is started, all of the related replies should
be kept within that particular thread.
That makes the thread easier to read and the whole mail system more
clean and organized.

Just looking back a couple of days:
We have -

2 threads on k2 Diversity (with 4 messages in each)
3 threads on K3 and HRD (6 in one 1 in the other and 1 called Ham
Radio Deluxe With K3)
2 threads on Bail Height
2 on New Zealand WOW
2 on AF Gain Delay
And now we have 3 separate threads going on Band Button.

Wouldn't be better and easier to follow if the broken threads were combined?

Just my 2¢,
George

Oops. The real wavelength is 3.6 x 10**14 meters! Sorry.

[Elecraft] Need help setting up mic jumpers on K2

2008-07-06 Thread George Victor
Hi Folks,
Has anyone set up the jumpers on a K2 for an Icom SM-6?
The desk microphone has an internal preamp.
The KSB2 manual says:

Do not connect pin 2 unless mic
has internal preamp. Touch-tone
ICs may be sensitive to stray RF.
Resistor, AF to 5V: HM-7, 820
ohms; HM-12/22/23/36, 10 K.

I am assuming I should just connect the 5V to pin 2

If possible I would like to be able to use the HM-36 as well.
Should I use a resistor?

Thanks in advance,
George

Well...it's not a complete fix, but if you obtain a nylon washer with an
inside diameter that will pass the shaft and an outside diameter that is
about the size of the knob or slightly smaller, you can put it over the
shaft and it will help hold it straight. I found appropriate washers at my

I guess that he ordered a few K3s to make a profit on
them while Elecraft catches up. Some folks must be
willing to pay a premium for not having to wait. The
law of Supply and Demand is applied here, although, in
my opinion, it's sure not, in the spirit of ham radio.
I know I wouldn't do it, nor would I bid on it. It's
the same thing as ticket scalping, even though that is
illegal in some places. Free enterprise is just that,
free to do whatever is legal.

The listing on ebay mentions the reserve price at that
of an assembled kit due to sales tax, shipping and
other fees. $80 or so for shipping and other fees
from Aptos, California to Carlsbad, California? Other
sealed Elecraft K3 items in future auctions are also
mentioned. I won't be bidding on those either. I would
hope that no one would bid on them but that won't
  happen.

[Elecraft] Keyer Speed shows up in SSB Mode on K2/100

2008-03-31 Thread George Victor
I noticed something strange happen yesterday, When letting up on the
PTT switch the K2/100 briefly displays the keyed speed on the display.
I was running 100 Watts into a tuned dipole. Operating SSB.
Has anyone else seen this?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 KDSP2

2008-03-29 Thread George Victor
I hate that module. There is no reset, and once installed it is the
most unfriendly filter to use.
In fact I pretty much put my K2 on the shelf after putting in the KDSP2.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: [Elecraft] Splicing mic cables

2008-03-08 Thread George Victor
I have done this with B Connectors.
They are the old style Bell Telephone Connectors.
Very common in the Alarm Industry today.
Jim, email me in private, I can get some to you.

 Hi Jim
That is mighty hard wiring to work on.
The old high impedance headsets used to
come with that kind of wire, and when
it went, we just replaced it entirely with
 something else flexible.

Unless someone comes up with a magic
bullet for you, better plan on a rewire job.

 Good luck and 73

 Subject: [Elecraft] Splicing mic cables

I have a question that perhaps someone on this list might have the
  answer to.

Does anyone know of good method for splicing tinsel-wire cables? I
 am
trying to repair a microphone extension cable that got ripped in
 two.

The cable in question is a 6-wire microphone cable, with conductors
 that
look to be about 24 to 26 gauge in size. The conductors consist of
copper foil wrapped around some sort of fabric core. Attempts at
stripping were dismal, using several different techniques. The
 cable
is normally terminated into a RJ type connector, that apparently
 uses ID
(insulation displacement) to connect to the wires. I am
 considering
something like Scotch UR type splices, but don't want to spend money
 on
a box without knowing if they will work or not.

A new cable is a possibility, but the existing one is built in to a
console, and several hours of work would be involved in removing
 and
  replacing the existing cable.

Soldering to individual conductors does not work. The resulting
connection is weak and very fragile.
