Re: [Elecraft] 'Q' signal trivia
I'm surprised no one has mentioned this... 73 means "best regards" and is sufficient without an "s". If you say "73s", it is like saying, "best regards's". However, I admit that it has become rather common practice in recent times. 73, Greg-N4CC Msg sent via CableONE.net MyMail - http://www.cableone.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Re: [Elecraft_K3] K3 vs FT1000D
I've had a FT-1000D since the early 90's...the only change I've made is I got rid of an older one and got a newer one that was cosmetically prettier. It is still on the desk. I intend to keep both radios...so I'm not prejudiced for one radio versus the other because of the one I have sitting on the desk. I have done A/B tests with both radios...and I can honestly tell you that I have worked two very weak stations on the K3 that I could not work on the 1000D because I could copy them on the K3 and not the 1000D. I could tell the signal was there but it was not intelligible -- one on 20 meters and one on 40 meters...switching the same antennas back and forth between the two radios. Pluses for the 1000D -- Yes, the feel of the knob is nicer. I like the APF for cw work on the 1000D. The sound of the radio in the speaker is fuller than the K3 with the RX equalizer set "flat" on the K3. I can make them sound almost identical by adjusting the RX equalizer on the K3. The 1000D is 200 watts. The 1000D has "band buttons". The 1000D has a real analog meter...I happen to prefer that. Pluses for the K3 -- It is easier to move around on the desk and get plugs in and out of the back; The selectivity / DSP in the K3 is a WOW! compared to the shift/width control on the 1000D; the tx test mode on the K3 is handy for adjusting things without actually transmitting a signal; the cwt and auto spot feature is pretty slick; it will be nice when they have the DVR available; I like the way the RIT and XIT CLR button works. You get new features every time Elecraft responds to a new "wish list" item; the ability to remember power levels by band is unique and I find it very useful. I think I get less blocking with the K3 from loud local than I do on the 1000D -- that's perception, not measurement. The K3 has 6 meters on it. The K3 can be adjusted to low power levels much more accurately and lower than the 1000D. If I were going to keep one and get rid of the other, my vote would be to keep the K3...but both radios are very nice. YMMV. As far as I'm concerned there is one more factor that is overwhelmingly in favor of Elecraftthe customer servicenot to mention that if I have to send a radio in for service the 1000D weighs in right at 70 lbs while the K3 would be 10 or less with all the packing...The chance of UPS crunching your 1000D is far greater than crunching the K3 if F=MA is still true...:-) (OK all you physicists can tell me why that is incorrect...I'm too old and too crotchety to care any more.) 73 de Greg-N4CC At 07:47 AM 9/10/2008, Chris Parnell wrote: H as funny as that may be (and it is... :) )... anyone got any decent views on this request please? Re: FW: [Elecraft] K3 and StepIR/Icom PW-1
Adam -- I guess it depends on the user. Certainly having the ALC connected (if it were compatible) would be preferred...but my point is that saying " the K3 should not be used as an exciter for the PW-1" [without ALC] is not entirely accurate. it is possible to use the PW-1 without ALC. It can be done and done quite safely. Granted you lose a measure of protection but if you use the K3 as I do -- where it recalls the drive setting by band, a unique feature of the K3 -- it is less likely that not having the ALC connected will ever be an issue. If you change the power settings frequently and are not careful to return them to the desired drive level when operating the amplifier then your chance of damaging the amp increases without the ALC. Cheers. 73 de Greg At 10:53 PM 9/7/2008, you wrote: Hi Greg, The PW1 uses the ALC loop as an essential part of its protective subsystem, as described in the service manual excerpt which I sent you. I would never put an expensive piece of equipment such as the PW1 at risk by connecting it to an exciter without a fully-functional ALC loop. Re: [Elecraft] Re: [Elecraft_K3] K3 Shipping Status Update 11/26/07
Oh come on now, David...there is no "fiasco". The folks at Aptos are doing a marvelous job. They've had to deal with things that just "happen" when you have a complex production operation and are relying on subs for contract parts/boards. So the first K3's didn't come out on the original schedule...they have communicated why that is true and are providing weekly updates of revised schedules. The anxiety that is being created is caused more by people on this reflector who are SPECULATING on what is happening and whining about it. If you read updates you would know that if you ordered in early May then your radio is likely to ship in the next couple weeks...and if that changes, you will know why...Here's what was said... Shipping weeks of Nov 26-30 and Dec 3-7 (Orders with deposits): We will be shipping the remaining 5/1 orders and many of the 5/2 orders during this period. (We still have at least a week to go on 5/1 orders due to the very short holiday week last week.) We have been running a little slow on assembled K3s and are still working on shipping a small number of these from 4/27-30 this week. The shipping rate on these will pick up this week (week of 11/26) and next. The initial rush of orders was greatest 4/27-5/3, and also on 5/7. After that group is shipped our movement through the backlog calendar will pick up considerably. We're also adding staff (and overtime) in production and test and hope to beat the above plan. We'll update it here early each week. How can you ask for more than that? If you have a specific question regarding your order, ask them...don't talk about tarnished reputation on a reflector. I sent a note to Lisa yesterday evening asking if she expected shipment of my radio before Christmas. Mine was ordered on July 6. AT 8:02 PM Pacific time she replied...and said that if things go as planned it should be shipped before the end of the year... Try sending a note to one of the other manufacturers and see if you get a reply from them at 8 p.m. Ha! I also had not put down a deposit and told her that I would be happy to do that if priority was being given to those who did provide the deposit. She said a deposit would not change my place in line. I'm absolutely delighted and astounded by the prompt response from some obviously dedicated people. I've never owned an Elecraft radio before but if it works as well as the customer service, I know I will be happy. Patience, lad...if you didn't have the anticipation, you wouldn't appreciate it as much when you do get it. 73 de Greg-N4CC At 03:28 AM 11/27/2007, David Pratt wrote: Sadly, Julian, Elecraft's previous good name is being tarnished by the K3 fiasco.
