[Elecraft] KX1 with 30/80 option - band cycling now limited to 7/10/14
I have had this KX1 for a while. This fault was noted (maybe arose) during a recent garden op. session. Bands 7/10/20 are all operational selectable as normal, but 3.5 is skipped completely. I acquired this little gem ready built fully working, so am a bit wary of taking it apart. Before I do, I am wondering if there are any stock faults to look out for ? 73 George G4TPV This e-mail and any attachment may contain confidential and/or privileged information. [Elecraft] K2 Display problem during CALFIL
I am a bit reluctant to post this in case it is a well worn topic - but I have searched the archive scratched my head awhile, so here goes : My K2 (Rev B) CALFIL/display worked OK when last run a while ago. This time, after pressing BAND minus and seeing the expected DAC code, pressing display showed all zeroes rather than the BFO frequency. I then pressed BAND plus just to see what happened, and the display very briefly showed (probably) the BFO frequency before settling on all zeroes. The effect was too fast to read. This sequence is repeatable, including following power offs ons. I have not tried a system reset - that has to be the last resort ! In all other respects the rig is fine... 73 George G4TPV This e-mail and any attachment may contain confidential and/or privileged information. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 73, Issue 37- which headphones for CW work
I recall reversing the phase of one head phone, with respect to the other, in a high-impedance head-set of 1960s' vintage. I incorporated a switch into the wiring to achieve apparent CW signal separation under some conditions. It worked surprisingly well. I have tried the same thing with more modern phones but with less effect. If I find another pair of S G Brown type F phones or similar, I will do it again. 73 George, G4TPV -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net Sent: 28 May 2010 17:00 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Elecraft Digest, Vol 73, Issue 37 Send Elecraft mailing list submissions to elecraft@mailman.qth.net To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net You can reach the person managing the list at elecraft-ow...@mailman.qth.net When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of Elecraft digest... The adapter plugs in and then screws home over the smaller stereo plug attached permanently to the phones. The plugs appear to have gold plating, which is a complete waste. 6) They come with a nine foot line cord which I just wrapped around a toroidal core even though I was not experiencing problems with noise. They are also available with a 40 inch long cord. I purchased a set and am most pleased with them. You can look the Extreme Isolation EX-29 Headphones up on Google or go to http://www.quietheadphones.com/product/ex-29 and order by post for $99. These headphones are made for musicians to use in groups but I think they are missing another market. I also have the Heil Proset Plus but prefer these cans for CW work. Both sets of phones have their advantages but for CW the Extreme Isolation phones are more to my liking. The EX 29 will be clamped to my ears this weekend for CQ WPX. 73 Doug EI2CN PS EI5DI wrote an article for the NCJ some time back on the subject of headphones. Nothing special needs to be done, other than finding the pin outs from the manuals. The THP 2.5 even has pull-up resistors so early K3 radios will drive the band data input just fine (NOT the case with the THP 1.5, where you need the K3 pull-up mod). If you plan on using ALC, you do need the K3 negative-going ALC mod if you have an early K3. Each to his own in how they want to identify themselves in casual operation. But if you use /QRP on the end of your call in a CW contest you place yourself at an immediate disadvantage beyond your choice of power levels. If you are going to call running stations, please don't put /QRP in your logger's call sign field. Stick it in your CQ string if you put it anywhere. Even though I've made over 2000 40m Q's multiple times in ARRL and CQ DX tests, and you can't do that if you don't copy 90% of calls right the first time, I rarely can copy a call sign in the form prefix/callsign correctly the first time, even if it is loud. My mind is simply NOT EXPECTING it. I do better with the trailing form callsign/xxx *IF* and only if I cleanly copied the callsign before the / . If the signal is in the noise, and I don't have the front of the call, /QRP is just confusion. Further, the longer calls are, the harder to copy. Worse, often a weak station will be copyable ONLY on the VERY TOP of QSB peaks, lasting only for a few letters. Anything you send that isn't your call sign hurts your chances -- adding spurious P,Q,R to the letter soup I am trying to construct a call from does NOT help. And if I hear a / in there you can bet I'm trying to construct a leading extra prefix that doesn't exist. Thank you for your assistance... EVERY contest there are a few stations where the ONLY part of the callsign string I got cleanly was /QRP, and they did NOT go into the log. I can't send them an email to explain how they hurt themselves because I don't know who they were The only thing I know is that /QRP is part of the reason I didn't copy them. BTW, note that I do NOT consider QRPers a nuisance to be put up with in contests, quite the opposite. I really try hard for the weak signals. Those are the ones I work that maybe nobody else can, and that is score differential. So bring 'em all on. Please just don't send /QRP after your call. Tell your QRP friends. 73, Guy. I too have proved that the design does not have an idiot diode ! Unlike other MFJ units, the schematic for this was not available (may be it is now..), so repair took me a while. I find the 259 useful. When not in various test equipment modes, I use it as a quiet tuner - with various manual transmatches, using an A/B switch with the rig. For this, it is easier to set-up and adjust than my noise bridge arrangement. 73 George This e-mail and any attachment may contain confidential and/or privileged information. [Elecraft] RE: MFJ-1782 message 20 Vol 19
I have used the MFJ model (1786 ?) which covers 10 to 30 MHZ. I have also used various horizontal wire loops in bedrooms currently have a 40M full size version (more-or-less) following the edges of my loft - about 33 ft AGL. This one is a good general-purpose qwiet receive antenna for 80 upwards, a reasonable NVIS in the day, all-round EU by night on 40M and OK generally on higher bands. I feed it at a corner with 100 Ohm coax into a T type tuner - not purist but OK. So I guess this is similar in polarization effect to Wayne's indoor loop. The MFJ is mounted high in the same loft in its' vertical orientation. Results over a no. of years have generally been better than the expectation for a small antenna - eg 1st contact on 10MHZ when newly-installed was a cross-town CW chat - but - followed immediately by Reunion Isle and then a ZS before the EU pile-up wiped-out my QRP ! Understand some of the MFJ quality comments - but this loop is manufactured like a tank - including the butterfly C. The weak part of the system is the tuner - the cross-needle bit was hard to interpret has now failed - however, I have added an-inline VSWR/Power meter it seems as good, with the bonus that I need 15 W MFJ recommend when tuning... There is a big long-running debate between Jack Belrose Mike Underhill re the efficiency/performance of small loops - well worth trying to follow (I'm at work, call-signs not to hand - I can supply some refs if wanted) The other bonus is - it acts as useful pre-selection, although not required for the K2 ! I am trying to figure out how to couple a low-loss inductor effect into my loop to get it down onto 40M - I suspect MFJ use a different, bigger butterfly capacitor in their 40M version. Any comment on my problem would be appreciated 72 George G4TPV This e-mail is intended only for the above addressee. It may contain privileged information. [Elecraft] RE: Ideas - New Elecraft Products ( Elecraft Digest, Vol 25, Issue 26)
A very stimulating thread ! My thoughts so far : * A manual ATU(AMU)(Transmatch)- as already suggested - but with Quiet Tune facility. (I presume not easily do-able with something like the excellent T1...) * PSK31 (plus some other data modes...) - some kind of smart SW/HW package either stand-alone or integrated into a multi-band transceiver, containing the functionality of TX/RX,digipan-type display - rather than use a PC..I have thought about my K2 plus a lap-top on a picnic table but the lap-top bit is off-putting from power and stuff considerations. * A T1 enhancement - add an antenna disconnect feature whenever the T1 is in the CW Status reporting mode. This would solve the problem of even just band noise obscuring the weak status report signal when needed. (Actually a Sierra/T1 integration issue, but I think of wider interest) 72 from George, G4TPV This mail has originated outside your organization, either from an external partner or the Global Internet. [Elecraft] RE: Elecraft Digest, Vol 23, Issue 29
My partial (and inelegant)solution to the K1 150KHZ tuning range being a bit sharp is to use a small mechanical slow-motion drive mounted directly on the VFO pot shaft, much as an extension drive shaft would be. It has a 6:1 reduction which gives a smooth slow rate.. I do not fix it via its two fixing holes to the K1 panel for two reasons : (1) I don't want to mess-up a good panel. (2) I don't not want it operational all the time. In use, I trap it on on one of its' flanges with one finger tip for bandspread. Otherwise, I use the control in the normal way. Works fine with 200HZ filter setting allows me to QSY quickly Crucially - It is light-weight. It was sold via a Radio-shack type outlet here in UK some years ago. Finally (SK posting prompted this...) I have mounted a 1940 vintage British forces morse key (W8 MkII) to the base of the K1 tilt stand - using two existing fore aft mounting holes - it sits almost central with the Paddlette BP1 mounted to its right (that one is an approved mod..) The constraint is that it can only be used with the exended tilt arms - but that works fine on desk or trail for me. 72 George G4TPV Message: 16 Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 11:05:03 -0800 From: Rick Dettinger [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K1 tuning range To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Thanks to the list for the comments and suggestions on K1 tuning range. Good idea Ralph. If you can fine tune just a little more, you will find even more CW up to 7123 or so. 7120 khz plus or minus BC QRM is SKCC suggested freq. and quite a bit of activity up there. SKCC is a group of over 1700 CW operators who have extended straight key nite to always. Same rules as SKN, i.e. mechanical keys only. I have thought about a 100 khz tuning range going from 7025 khz to 7125 khz but that would involve a new xtal in the premix circuit. I guess I will go for 125 khz. This gives about 12 khz per rev.
