Re: [Elecraft] Using KAT-500 without BAND Information

2020-01-08 Thread Jack Spitznagel
Hi Tom,

I am also a very happy KPA500/KAT500 user with an IC7000, 7100, and 7300. I
home brewed my own interface for the antenna tuner and the “big DIN” connector.
They all start an autoswitch routine to memorized frequency values that is fast
and accurate.

I always put the KPA500 in standby when I change bands that require an antenna
switch over.

Never owned a better Amp/Tuner combo.

Re: [Elecraft] Noise-cancelling headphones mystery

2018-12-09 Thread Jack Spitznagel
See if you can borrow a hi quality aviation noise cancelling headset to try
out. I have the now discontinued Sennheiser S1’s which work extremely well in
many situations including with a single engine open cockpit aircraft, riding
mowers, tractors, field day, etc. They have the added nicety of high quality
adaptive noise cancelling and efficient noise cancelling the mic audio as well.
Don’t look for “Heil Hi Fidelity” response of the mic. You will sound like you
are on an aircraft radio but they cancel noise better than anything I have
tested.

There a number of sets out there that probably perform at that level. David
Clark, Bose, Lightspeed and others... I just happened on to a great deal for
the Sennheisers. All run above the $500 mark retail...

Hi John,
It uses the standard KXUSB (or an RS232 equivalent) cable. It configures from
HRD as a COM# port at a baud rate you set for the radio. I have 4 radios
configured including my KX3 and can control all four from HRD simultaneously

Re: [Elecraft] relatively newbie - what's your best tip for me?

2017-09-22 Thread Jack Spitznagel
Congratulations Anne.
My contribution:
1. Get Fred Cady’s book. (another vote)
2. If you run digital modes with a soundcard device make sure you read the
advice in the book about setting up the soundcard, paying particular attention
to setting the ALC level properly. The generic setting information provided in
the digital program instructions Will Not Work for the KX3. ALC in Elecraft
radios works differently than any other major brand of tranceiver.
3. Try not to fall in love with it!  Good luck.

If you are not worried about run-amok Jeeps and American Tourister gorillas,
but are worried about weight, you might consider this or the 22 inch version
for more accessories. My entire KX3/PX3/KXPA100 station plus digital stuff and

Not quite as rugged as the high priced original, but passes for carry-on.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: HRD multiple "stations" AND portable comfort

2017-05-12 Thread Jack Spitznagel
Jim,

I am not an HRD expert, but I have used the feature in DM780 that sets up
multiple Log Entry profiles to do just what you want. All you have to do is put
in a profile and a Locator combination for where you are and each rig you might
use at that location. I have 8 combinations now that I can select depending on
the situation.

Once you have opened DM780 and the Logbook in HRD, go to the Logbook Menu,
select My Station, and you will find the editor that lets you create or remove
as many locations as you need.

Ahhh... my kinda contest... look for activation of the upper Gunpowder

My biggest problem will be that flyfishing, running the KX3, and logging

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/PX3/KXPA100 - PX3 taking 5 minutes to come on??? KXPA100 loses mind...

2017-02-12 Thread Jack Spitznagel

Hi Brian,

Well it is usually about 65F(~18C) in the shack this time of year unless
I turn on the space heater. Not really "cold" per se. The PX3 will
misbehave on start up or after having been turned off for about 5 min.
even in warmer times. I guess what I mean by cold is different from
Canadian cold... :)

Thanks for pointing that behavior out though... temperature may be an issue.

Jack - KD4IZ

On 2/12/2017 16:19, Brian Waterworth wrote:

>>When the PX3 is powered on "cold", it takes about 5 minutes for the

Hi Jack,

I recently experienced something similar to your PX3 situation. When
you said "cold", I immediately perked up.

During winter field day, I decided to take my PX3 with me. Our club
worked outdoors in about -2C degree weather. The trailer I was in had
a couple of portable space heaters. It felt like they were pumping
out one BTU each :-). By the time I had the station setup, the temp
increased to about 9C, maybe. It was still cold and I had to wear a
coat. Anyway, I digress.

When I powered on the PX3, the display was dark. Picked it up to hear
the click of the power on. I heard a click. H. I tried a couple
of times. I disconnected all the inter-connect cables and still no
display. I was a bit cold and had just finished exerting a lot of
energy with the setup (antenna as well), that I just left it
disconnected and put it away. I was a bit dejected, but I had to
focus on the task at hand, because WFD was going to start in moments.
I should have left it turned on for a little while to see if the
display came back on after the internal circuitry warmed up a bit.
But that never occurred to me because every other display in my
station came to life immediately.

After the PX3 had a chance to settle at home in the warmer climes of
my shack, I connected everything back up and lo and behold, the PX3
display lit up. I was quite relieved. I wrote off the experience to
the fact that the PX3 didn't like the cold weather. I don't either :-)

Anyway Jack, I am happy to be another voice when you go to Elecraft
support regarding the PX3 display not turning on when the unit is
cold. I don't know the actual temperature that the PX3 doesn't like.
But I never had this issue before. I can turn on the PX3, when in the
house, and it comes on immediately after having sat for days in my
basement shack.

Regards,
Brian

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3/KXPA100 - PX3 taking 5 minutes to come on??? KXPA100 loses mind...

2017-02-12 Thread Jack Spitznagel

All, (particularly Don or one of the kind folks at Elecraft support)

There are two seemingly interrelated problems in this message that may
indeed be independent.

All other helpful souls - before you post an answer, please read
this ENTIRE message. I am a tech type and no stranger to radio -
computer control systems. I did check cabling to make sure it is OK,
an solidly seated. Firmware is updated and I configured all devices
   from factory settings.

My trusty KX3/PX3/KXPA100 kit has been on the shelf for an all too long
respite because the antenna farm was one tree short. It is going back
into regular service alongside an ICOM 7300 now before I build field day
and trail "go kits" for my beloved KX3 system. Since it takes about 2
hours to get everything behaving here - this is going to be a lousy
EMCOMM and Field Day solution... For the trail, it doesn't matter
because the KX3 goes alone.

Here goes: As I was bringing things back online today, I found a
stickynote to self about an issue I had with the PX3 and the KXPA100
before I stopped using the kit in December. I am still observing the
following behavior:

When the PX3 is powered on "cold", it takes about 5 minutes for the
display to light up.

This occurs regardless of the power on jumper position which is
currently back in the enable (pin3/4) position.

This occurs whether the KX3 or the KXPA100 are cabled in.

Once the PX3 is "warm". I can turn it off and then on again and it
   comes right back to life.

During this PX3 "braindead" period, when the entire setup was cabled up,
the amplifier will not work properly. To make things more annoying,
after the 5 minute braindead spell is over and the PX3 is working and if
the KXPA100 decides to cooperate, I have to go back into the menu,
enable the KXPA100, then reset the power level for the whole system
every time this happens... but the PA does not always stay on!!! Then I
have to tweak the whole system until it decides to work... when the
KXPA100 is enabled by the KX3 menu, it holds PA MODE ON a moment and
then reverts to PA MODE OFF without my doing anything.

Today in desperation, I tore everything down and re-connected several
times and FINALLY all 3 unit talked to each other and the PA stayed on.

This started occurring in the fall of 2016 (September or so), I do not
recall that any of this happened when I first assembled the PX3 and
began to use the KXPA100.

So before the inevitable deluge of helpful "Did'ja look" comments come -
current firmware is :

KX3 is at MCU version 2.38, DSP is at 1.37

PX3 is at MCU revision 1.39

KXPA100 is at revision 1.39

AND ALL units are set for 38,400 and communicate with the computer.

All cables have been checked and are properly seated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

[Elecraft] FWD: FUN! - 10 Meter POP: May 28 + 29

2016-05-14 Thread Jack Spitznagel

All,

I am forwarding a note from Ev Tupis, W2EV - the chief concept engineer
and cheerleader of the PropNET project. I would urge all interested
folks to join in the 10 meter POP (play-on PropNET) over the Memorial
Day weekend. Please check out the new software (ACDS) that Jeff
Steinkamp, N7YG and the PropNET alpha team have fine tuned over the last
year.

Two serious KX3 Elecrafter's, Ron, W7HD and myself have been involved in
this effort for quite some time. On top of the development effort, we
have learned a huge amount about the behavior of the 10M band over the
last several years and would welcome some extra participation to expand
our observations. For some great observations about 10 meters based on
the PropNET and WSPRnet projects see:

Thanks for considering this great opportunity.

Jack KD4IZ

Some people think that sub-100 level solar flux levels that dip into the
"high 80's" means "death to 10 meters". Others say "Bullocks!" What's
the TRUTH?

Those that have yet to try: you have 2 weeks to power-up using PropNET's
ACDS^31 client (http://www.PropNET.org) and prepare to POP (Play On
PropNET)! Let's ALL get on for the upcoming "Memorial Day Weekend" (May
28) in the (USA) and Make Magic Happen!

I'll be taking screen shots of our web maps all weekend long to show
others what can be done simply by pressing that TX button.

What to do now? Easy! Download the latest ACDS^31 client from
http://www.propnet.org/ and activate ahead of time to get the wrinkles
(if any) worked out. If you are a soundcard mode operator...there
should be no wrinkles. ;-)

ACDS^31 will configure you as an Automatically Controlled Digital
Station (FCC Part 97.221). Let it run 24-hours a day and it will
control your station as if you were there.

If you live in a country where this is not possible...no worries! There
is a feature of ACDS^31 that will screen-prompt you to press (ENTER)
every 90 minutes. If you don't, it goes into RX-only (Lurk) mode.

DO NOT set to RX-only (Lurk) mode. Allow ACDS^31 to have your station
auto-ID every 10 minutes (6x per hours) using both PSK31 *and* CW. That
way, even non-PSK31 folks can park on 28.119 and human-decode ID's over
a 10 minute period to see where the band is open, too!

By the way, you can set your station to ID every 5 minutes (12x per
hour) and it would be even better. REALLY! ACDS^31 includes
RX-before-TX QRM avoidance technology!

After that...watch the "Dashboard" tab each day. It will map "band
heat". That is an index that is designed to chart signals in the
waterfall vs. time-of-day.

Additionally, explore the TEXT MESSAGE feature! You can setup ACDS^31
to send you a text message if/when your station decodes DX! This unique
feature is a first-person alert of the DX that YOUR station hears...IN
REAL TIME.

Feel free to FORWARD THIS E-MAIL to other lists that you belong to.
Because of our QRM-avoidance technology, we have yet to find an upper
limit to the number of TXing PropNET stations that the waterfall can
support. ;-)

Get ready to POP on the "Long Weekend" that starts at z 28 May 2016!

Cheers,
Ev, W2EV

[Elecraft] KX3/PX3/KXPA100 USB control harness noise

2015-10-31 Thread Jack Spitznagel
I am seeing see about a 1 S-unit jump in this noise above the floor in
quiet band conditions when I use rig control (any program) on a Dell
laptop. Rig power supply is quiet.

Before I spend a lot of time reinventing things... and trying to figure
out how to search the archives for something this specific:

Is there someone who has used ferrites to kill hash noise that only
occurs with this combination of rig, panadapter, and amp setup when the
Elecraft Utilities or a rig control program is running?

If so what type of ferrite(s) did you use and where did you place them?

Observation: I can knock the noise down by half by putting a "medium
sized" clip over ferrite (sorry, it says TEAC on it... no model number)
right at the box on the KXPA100 to KX3 adapter cable.

That may be the best I can do - if so thanks for reading this and not
telling me to search the archive...

Re: [Elecraft] Aviation Headset and the KX3

George,

Thanks for posting this suggestion. It took a while for me to get a
"rountuit" and order one of these. I found it for slightly less from
Aircraft Spruce. I am using the PA-96 adapter with a Sennheiser S1 noise
cancelling headset that works beautifully for me by assisting my failing
ears. I probably need to shape the transmit audio a bit, but have had no
complaints yet.

[Elecraft] KX3 2M Transverter install - works but.. weird behaivior.

2014-08-21 Thread Jack Spitznagel

Question for Wayne and those KX3 gurus who have installed the 2M module:

Installation and setup seemed to go well, however I did have the
44.000/22.000 display issue that has been previously described. It was
cured using the suggestion from the list here. After an hour of tuning
around and sporadically trying to get the local repeater to come up, a
problem started. Unit seemed to transmit OK on all bands and all modes.

PROBLEM: The HI CUR warning started to come on 3 - 5 minutes after the
rig has been turned on and is RECEIVING fine then the rig beeps 3 times
and turns itself off.

PLEASE NOTE: This only happens in RECEIVE - all bands and modes
including 2M. The rig will tune and transmit.

Observations:

Volume is set at about 5
Current is at 0.212 at V0 goes to about 0.230 A with the volume at 12 or so.
Voltage is at 13.7 and rock solid
PA.I reads 27C
OSC reads 32C
The heatsink area at back of the frame is cool to lukewarm.
The SUB indicator was flashing, but turning off the SUB does not change
the self shutdown behavior.

What is it that is done during the KX3-2M installation that could have
triggered this? Is it something I could have accidentally tweaked in the
settings or is this going to trigger a visit to back to Elecraft?

Thanks,

Jack - KD4IZ

[Elecraft] [KX3] HRD/DM80 and a SignaLink

2014-05-09 Thread Jack Spitznagel

Good Weekend All,

Don't have easy access to search the archives, so at risk of a dup, here
is a finding from setting up the KX3, SignaLink with the KX3
Tigertronics made cables, and DM780. HRD works flawlessly with Elecraft
KXUSB here, but...

Using the little paper instruction insert that came with the SL to KX3
cables from Tigertronics, it was implied that the KX3 menu entry for
MicBtn was to be in PTT Up.Dn. Well, that is apparently backwards. The
system behaves normally if Mic Btn is OFF, and when set as instructed in
the little sheet, the outgoing data string is transmitted in your
selected mode, then the SL unkeys (as it should), but the KX3 stays in
transmit.

When the KX3 is set as the TigerTronic folks suggest, I assume the SL
vox relay was being overruled by the TX command by KXUSB control
because tapping the XMIT button on the rig would drop the rig back into
receive. With PTT set OFF, the SignaLink VOX circuit has proper control.

Had me stumped for a minute.. hope this helps someone setting up in the
future.
