Re: [Elecraft] #6107 Now has tilt stand

2007-05-27 Thread James Walker
I'm glad to see this item being discussed. I've had my K-2 for about a
year and I've never completed the bale assembly step. I wrote to
Elecraft to report my bale part as defective because it didn't fit
anywhere near like what I was expecting. I was told in return by
Elecraft that the bale sent to me was a correct part and acknowledged
that the bale assembly is difficult. I haven't touched my bale since.
Anyone want to buy an unused bale?

Re: [Elecraft] #6107 Now has tilt stand

2007-05-28 Thread James Walker
Thanks Ken for the advice on bale assembly. I had discovered the correct
technique here on the reflector and believe I could do the job if I
wanted. I wasn't going to use the bale anyway because of how I have the
rig situated with my other radios. If I were a proud man I would install
the bale as a matter of principle. But at the end of the end of the
assembly process, I had worked so hard and long, and was so proud of the
radio, I didn't have the courage to risk failure again. As you surely
know, this radio is as much a window into the human spirit as it is fine
instrument of radio communications. I'm a happy camper, but I still say,
"The bale is a bear."

Re: [Elecraft] RFI on K3s

2016-06-20 Thread James Walker
This thread has lead me to notice the comments on operating voltage. I’ve been
having some trouble with my K-3 and the MCU LD message on startup. It was
suggested that I monitor the voltage on the rig during operation. I get the
13.5 on receive. But the voltage drops as low as 10.5 on 100 watt transmit. I
have an Astron power supply that is rated at 35 amps, very conservative for
this usage. I have used it to power 100 watt rigs in the past with no problem.

Is it normal to register voltage as low as I’m seeing on my K-3? The power
supply has meters for amps and volts and the voltage indicated during power
cycles is unchanged. So it appears the voltage drop is at the rig. I can ever
see dimming of the dial light in some situations. I don’t think the power
supply is failing since I don’t notice these symptoms with any other rigs. And
no, I never use the power supply for more than one rig at a time.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 Voltage Drop when transmitting

2019-02-25 Thread James Walker
I have a K3 that behaves similarly to what Mike described. I switched from an
Astron 25 amp (15 years or more old) power supply to a switching power supply.
Problem solved. One would think the problem was my Astron power supply, but I
don’t see any such power drop when I use my Astron with other 100 watt rigs.
Very strange.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 "Point and Click"

2017-02-13 Thread James Walker
Frank,

You are drinking the cool aide. With the mouse click option you can tune all
over the band quickly, sampling all kinds of signals in the time it takes to
retune one new station. I complain about this at Dayton every year and am
always told it’s not necessary. It’s not necessary any more than the P-3 is
necessary but it sure would be a nice feature.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 upgrade to K3S question

When faced with the upgrade question, my choice for spending the money was to
try out the IC-7300. I wouldn’t contend that the IC-7300 is equal to the
K3S/P3, but the K3 and the IC-7300 combination may be more fun than the

[Elecraft] K-2

2018-01-27 Thread James Walker
All this talk about K-2’s makes me homesick for the one I built shortly before
my retirement (Serial #5529). I spent an entire summer carefully following the
instructions and created an astonishing radio. Sometime after that, the lure of
the K-3 took over and I sold my K2 to finance the purchase of the K-3. I now
regret that decision.

If anyone out there knows who has my old K-2 please contact me off-list. I’d
like to discuss reacquiring the radio. If you tell me you have the radio but
it’s not for sale, just tell me how it’s doing.

Re: [Elecraft] Want My K-2 Back

2018-02-25 Thread James Walker
Thanks Wayne. You and Eric are too kind. Sadly, the years have taken their toll
on my ambitious youth. I’m less patient these days, and far from as steady of
hand as I was then. Perhaps my efforts to reunite with my K2 are a last gasp to
hold on to my memories of a 16 year old kid with a new novice license. Wow!
That’s lot of baggage to heap on a lowly K2. Maybe fate will lead me to the
radio. Anyway, I couldn’t build a new one now, even if you threw a KPA1500 into
the deal. BUT, if I do find the radio, how about I bring it to Dayton and
collect those signatures. The Dayton booth is where I bought my lost K-2. And
if experience is any guide, I’ll buy a KX2 while I’m there.

Thanks for being a friend to me and all of us Elecraft enthusiasts.

Re: [Elecraft] Excel Test

I know all about the alternatives to Microsoft word. I actually have Microsoft
word. The point is that PDF is the most accessible format that we all have in
common. Why use some more proprietary or exotic format to transmit something
that does not need the features of these programs you suggest. If I only need
them to read the message, I'd rather use what I have and avoid the complexities
of downloading new software. I think it is correct to say that any word
processing software can create a PDF document for simple text. Why must a user
be forced download a new program when a little bit of an attention to detail
can create a document everyone can read?

selecting them for installation so much easier during kit construction. Also,
they don’t fall out easily.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 appears to be bricked

2016-09-11 Thread James Walker
I have the same problem with my K-3 from time to time. It’s a major
inconvenience but it’s not fatal. I’ve tried a couple of times to get help from
this forum but no one seems to have a good answer. My best theory is that there
is a defect with the firmware chip. It’s not a widespread defect, so my theory
goes, since most K-3 users don’t suffer from the problem. I’m sure Elecraft
would replace the chip but I can’t be sure that’s actually the problem. So I
just live with it.

All you have to do is turn everything off including the computer. To turn off
the the K-3 you have to remove the power connection. Next, turn on the
computer. After the computer boots up, connect the power to the K-3 and turn it
on. You will see the same MCU LD message and blinking transmit light, but the
computer utility program should be able to find the K-3 and reload the
firmware.

Lastly, and sadly, if my experience is any guide, you’ll have the problem again
from time to time.

Do you have a P-3? If so, you might need to reconnect the RS232 directly to the
K-3 rather than the P-3 before starting the process.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - stuck at MCU LD we upgrading software

2017-01-28 Thread James Walker
Tony,

I used to have this problem all the time. It was maddening. I never knew if the
rig was going to turn on. It was always necessary to restart my computer to get
my K3/100 to talk to the app that resets the firmware. I had several
suggestions to fix the problem. The one that proved most helpful was to get a
different power supply. I was using a big Astron supply feeding into a Johnson
power strip. Several devices ran off the power supply. It should have been able
to supply plenty of power for everything because the other devices were low
wattage users like a keyer. Anyway, I had a smaller Anstron device that was
once used with a 2-Meter radio. It was fully capable of 100 watts. I hooked it
up and the rig as a dedicated supply and it has worked perfectly ever since.
You may have a different problem than me but that’s my story.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - stuck at MCU LD we upgrading software

2017-01-28 Thread James Walker
Yours is not the Astron power supply I was using. Mine was the 35A, transformer
style, not switching, with dual meters. I’m still using it for other radios
with no problem. And yes, I did check the voltage reading on the K3/100 and it
did reduce severely under any load, even QRP. That’s a strange quirk in the
equipment but I think that’s it.

W3FPR got me on the correct track.

In your case, di d you check the voltage on the K3? Maybe you had a problem
with a connection in the power supply? Down in the Caribbean periodically we
have to take apart the Astron linear power supplies and clean the contact
surface on the two bolts feeding the 12V output. They develop a little bit of
resistance that drops the voltage under a load.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - stuck at MCU LD we upgrading software

2017-01-29 Thread James Walker
I tried the direct wiring fix first. It didn’t change anything. And the voltage
drop was radical. It would go down sometimes from 13 to 11 volts. The voltage
drop was not indicated on the power supply volt meter. And remember, the big
Astron power supply works fine with my IC-7300 and IC-746 off the Rig Runner
strip. Maybe those rigs work better with the voltage variation. But something
is going on here with either the power supple or the K3. I paid about $200 for
the big power supply back in the 90’s. I think the little Astron supply
(switching type) was less than $100. Maybe the difference is between
transformers and switching technology. Anyway, my nightmare is over with a
happy ending.

Compare the voltage directly at your power supply terminals between receive and

like the RigRunner, remove the K3 from it and connect direct from the power
supply to the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] Power supply voltage sag during transmit

2017-01-29 Thread James Walker
I understand. My mention of a switching supply was simply to point out that
smaller switching power supply solved my problem. I’m not arguing for a
conclusion as to a defect in the K3. I’m simply sharing information. The same
connection to my big supply using the Power Pole strip works fine with my other
rigs. Direct connection between my K3 and the big power supply doesn’t solve
the problem. That’s just data, not an argument. It’s not a problem for me any
more. I thank you for your always generous and capable assistance with Elecraft
issues. We met once at the Elecraft booth in Dayton. You provide a much
appreciated service to our community.

[Elecraft] Lost K-2

2020-05-13 Thread James Walker
This is a repeat of a message I sent out several months ago. I'm paying the
price for having parted with my K-2. I'm trying to buy it back but I can't find
it. If anybody can help, please consider this message and get in touch with me
directly. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

K-2 Sale

All this talk about K-2’s makes me homesick for the one I built shortly before
my retirement (Serial #5529). I spent an entire summer carefully following the
instructions and created an astonishing radio. Sometime after that, the lure of
the K-3 took over and I sold my K-2 to finance the purchase of a K-3. While I
have enjoyed the K-3 and still use it regularly, I'm sorry to have parted with
my K-2.

If anyone out there knows who has my old K-2 please contact me off-list. I’d
like to discuss reacquiring the radio. If you tell me you have the radio but
it’s not for sale, just tell me how it’s doing.

2021-01-29 Thread James Walker
Thanks David and Wayne. I'm older now but your stories remind me how much I've
enjoyed amateur radio over all these years.. I'm gonna go home today and fire
up the rigs. I grew in the early 60’s working from a dirt floor in a dug out
basement of a suburban home working with very inexpensive and temperamental
rigs. Making any contact was a cause for celebration. Maybe it's gotten too
easy working with the newest rig technology. I guess that explains my
continuing love for QRP.
