Makes me somewhat relieved I have not ordered a KPA1500 yet (insert

Had I placed an order fronting the Elecraft team MY $6,000.00;  I would

[Elecraft] FD 2018 K3 - MK-II

2018-06-25 Thread Jim AC0E

Used a K3/100 and microham MK-II this past weekend at our FD site. Sunday
morning
the MK-II got some RFI into it and hung-up for about a minute until I reset
the logging
software and cycled the MK-II. The setup worked without flaw for the entire
weekend

otherwise.
Did anyone else eat way too much food this weekend as part of Field Day?

Re: [Elecraft] K3_EZ by Bill Coleman, N2BC, SK

2018-10-01 Thread Jim AC0E
Mr. Coleman is indeed a SK. I exchanged several emails with Bill with
regard to K3_EZ. He told me he had severe health issues the past several
years and was unable to continue his involvement developing K3_EZ.

Bill also told me the source code was lost.
I just checked his QRZ.com page ad it still up and noted with Bill SK in

Greetings -

I appear to have really #@(*)(*%&ed up my K3. While updating the firmware,
I accidentally hit either a key on the computer keyboard or one of the mouse
buttons. The K3 Utility window "grayed out" and the K3 is stuck in MCU
Load, no backlight, TX LED flashing.

Setup: Astron 50A PSU; K3 # 2768 with new KIO3B board; direct USB connection
to Lenovo Thinkpad running WIN7 Home Premium; K3 Util v 1.16.7.25. Computer
and K3 Utility both recognize the COM port; latest FTDI drivers installed.

Yes, I know there is supposed to be a cure for this, but it didn't work. I
tried:

1. Restarting both the computer and the K3 a few times.
2. Remove & reconnect power supply from K3, hold POWER button to force it
into bootloader mode. (which it is already in)
3. Factory reset (power on while holding SHIFT/LO button). Never got the EE
INIT message.
4. Uninstall and re-install K3 Utility and try 1-3 again.
5. Uninstall and re-install front panel assembly; try 1-3 again.

K3 Utility is still trying to connect and the TX LED is still flashing. Any
ideas before I call tech support on Monday? Thanks.

I use EaseUS. It's a complete package with options for scheduled full
backup, incremental backups, continuous backup, disk image, etc. Also can
be used to clone disks.

Acronis is a very popular backup package for Windows. I used to use it but
had several mishaps, including not being able to read old backups. Haven't
tried it in a long time.

I have EaseUS setup to do a full backup on each disk in my system on the
first day of the month, and incremental backups on each disk once a day.
The backups are written to a hard drive in a USB dock. I have a set of five
of these disks and rotate to the next drive after the last incremental
backup of the month. Whenever I visit my safe deposit box, I put one of the
disks in the box and retrieve the one that I put in the box last time. That
way, I have an offsite backup in case of disaster. It might be a little
old, but better than nothing.

Further, I have Windows 10 on and SSD and all of my critical data on a

Can EQ, or any other menu settings, degrade or change over time?

I ask, as I keep careful logs of ALL menu settings and have noted some
changes showing up from time to time. Currently, I make my settings
manually.

Too bad no one ever picked up the now defunct K3 EZ. Now there was a
program that really served a purpose.

We have a whole house humidifier.
The default setting is 40%. We run it just up to the point where we

runs during winter.

Not only that, but the two OWNERS of the company read this list every
day, and chime in with advice when needed. I've seen one of them, N6KR,
who's the principal design engineer, work one on one with DX trips to
solve issues, and I've had more than a few one on one engineering
conversations with him at hamfests and online. Heck -- we can't even
correspond with low level flunkies at the JA companies (or Ten Tec), let
alone the guys who own the place! And both owners are active hams, I've
worked both of them on the air.

How about this for support? There will be a bunch of K3s in the
international WRTC competition in New England next weekend, and Elecraft
is sending at least one of their best engineers (who was a competitor at
WRTC in Russia 4 years ago) to support those radios. I know because he's
my neighbor, K6XX.

I've been an Elecraft owner since 2004, and bought two K3s in 2008. I'm
very pleased with their support. EVERY radio has issues -- with
Elecraft, there are much fewer of them, and you can get them fixed!
