[Elecraft] K3 and KAT connections without a KPA500

2023-11-04 Thread Jim Cary
I’ve had to take my KPA500 out of service and want to operate just with the K3
and KAT. I’ve tired different cabling configurations but can’t seem to get the
k3 to communicate. The manuals show all sorts of connections with amps, but
not without an amp.

I know it has to be simple, but sure is beating me!

[Elecraft] Recording received audio

2023-08-24 Thread Jim Cary
I’ve been requested by my electric company to send a recording of the power
line noise I am encountering at my QTH.

I thought that would be an easy project….. connect the K3S Line Out to the
Mike In of my computer (Windows 10) and use the Voice Recorder to capture the
audio. But no matter what I try, Voice Recorder says to “set up the microphone
in Settings.” But when I go into settings and look at the Microphone level, I
can see the audio is apparently being received as the level varies as I change
the level of the data on the K3S line out. I tried using both the K3S
internal sound card and the computer sound card with no result.

Is there a better APP than Voice Recorder for this purpose?

What am I missing? This should be easy!! ☹️

Re: [Elecraft] Supplemental K3 Cooling

2023-08-14 Thread Jim Cary
Keith,

I had saved the configuration file before I sent the radio in for repair and I
fully understand the need NOT to reload that file. However, is there a way to
print out the saved file in a readable format so that I could set some of the
old parameters in the new configuration?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Supplemental K3 Cooling

2023-07-25 Thread Jim Cary
I recently burned up the finals in my K3. I believe the problem was operating
too high a power in FT8 mode for a sustained period on six meters. I’ve
learned a few lessons (expensive ones too!) as a result, especially about
monitoring the PA temperature.

I was also advised by the service technician that the original KPA3 finals were
bi-polar and fairly robust. However, they are no longer made so they replace
them with newer MOSFETS which are more delicate.

Given that the newer finals appear to be more delicate I’d like to see if there
is a way to increase the PA cooling. The K3 operates in a uncooled garage in
the tropics, so the ambient temperature is well into the 80’s already.

I seem to remember comments years ago about either a replacement for the stock
fans, or other ways to increase the airflow.

I’d appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks,

Jim

[Elecraft] K3S Line in not working.

2023-04-16 Thread Jim Cary
I Just received my K3S back from being serviced, but it doesn’t appear that the
Line In is functioning.

On FT8 I have the MIC+LIN set to ON, and MIC SEL to FPL.BIAS — same settings as
I have been using on my back-up K3. I am using the same cabling between PC and
both rigs, so there is no issue with any of them.

I’ve checked and double checked the Menu and Config settings between the two
radios and they are identical.

Anyone have any idea of what I might be missing before I contact Elecraft?

[Elecraft] K3 KPA100 not putting out in high power

2023-03-16 Thread Jim Cary
My K3 has stopped working in high power. It works fine until output hits 12
watts. I hear the relay kicking in at that point to switch the K3 PA bypass
relay to the KPA100 module, but power goes to 0 and swr fluctuates all over
the place. The amp breaker does not appear to have been tripped.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 issue (power surge?)

2021-07-10 Thread Jim Cary
I posted a note yesterday that I took a power surge which knocked out my PC and
couldn’t connect to my K3S. Thanks to all the input for you guys, it would
appear that the IO board on the K3S got fried. Still to be confirmed, but
strongly suspect true.

I figured I better check out the KPA-1500, and sure enough the KPA-1500 utility
came up with the error message shown in the attachment.
n

Does this indicate there is a problem with the COM port on the PC, or with the
1500?

[Elecraft] K3S and PC Not talking

2021-07-09 Thread Jim Cary
I took a power surge the other day which wiped out my computer. I’ve replaced
the computer, but it and the K3S are not talking now.

I’ve made sure RS232 is configured to USB, tried a couple of different USB
ports on the PC (which I know are good since they will recognize a flash
drive), as well as different USB cables.

The device manager list shows two Com Ports:

Communications Port (Com1)
Intel Active Management Technology - SOL (Com3)

Nothing changes when I plug in the USB Cable from the K3 and the K3 Utility
cannot find either Port.

My gut feel is that there is something wrong on the PC end since the K3 had no
problem communicating with the old PC. But I’d like to prove that. Is there
some way I can test out the K3 USB? Unfortunately the PC does not have a
RS232 connector so I can try that as an alternative.

I updated the PC COM drivers but that made no difference.

Or perhaps one of you computer guru’s can tell me how to check out the computer
COM ports.

Any help would be gratefully accepted!

[Elecraft] Local KPA1500 operation via KPA1500 remote

2020-09-19 Thread Jim Cary
I’m having trouble configuring the KPA1500 remote software for local control of
my KPA1500 using USB or Ethernet ( I want to locate the amp in the basement).
I assume I am supposed to use the “Local Connect” tab, but when I hit the
“connect” button, it says “unable to connect on Com………” and “KAT Remote not
running.”

The com connection does work with the Utility (and the Utility isn’t running at
the same time).

Obviously I’m doing something wrong here, so would appreciate some help.

I can use the KPA1500 Utility to do the same thing, but it is not as “elegant”

[Elecraft] K3S and N1MM+ on cw with no interface

2018-11-22 Thread Jim Cary
Thanks to all who replied.

The method shown in the manual does work, as does the method John Simmons
suggested.

The problem was that I was trying to set the com port below the radio com port
on the N1MM configure screen, like I had to do on my old interface. Once I
realized that the cw and ptt were controlled through the same port on the same
line as the radio, all went well.

As usual, an “operator head space problem”

[Elecraft] K3 Mini Error question

2016-10-29 Thread Jim Cary
I just packed up both my control and remote systems and moved them down to my
ZF QTH, where they will be permanent.

I have the K3 mini hooked up to the control RRC unit, but haven’t hooked up the
remote unit yet/

When I powered up the mini, and turned the volume control I got a three tone
warning signal. The light over the aux/mic cable is flashing yellow, which
according to the Remote Rig manual means the SIP connection has failed…. but it
isn’t clear what that means or what to do about it. I’ve checked and doubled
checked all the connections and they look good.

Does anyone not in the CQ contest (!!!) have an idea?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Remote and KPA500 Remote

2016-08-16 Thread Jim Cary
Ken,

Sorry, but you have completely lost me there I am not up on terminology
(someone should write a good book on basic terminology!).

In my simple language, I’ll have PC’s at both ends, with the remote PC
connected with the appropriate cable to each of the units and the software
programs running on the control PC. Obviously each PC will be connected to a
router. Does this help?

[Elecraft] K3 RX Antenna Input RF

2009-08-18 Thread Jim Cary
I seem to be getting too much RF in on my Beverage on 160 when I am
transmitting, which appears to be causing the K3 RX antenna switching
relay to chatter along with my dots and dashes. No problem on 80 when
using my beverage even though both the TX and RX antennas are the same
for both bands. I didn't have this problem with my other rigs, but I
think that is because they grounded the RX Antenna input when the
transceiver goes to transmit. Apparently the K3 does not.

The bottom line I guess is that I need to either ground the RX Antenna
input, or lift it, when the K3 goes to transmit. Does anyone have a
simple circuit that I could use to key a relay off of one of the
accessory connector pins?

Thanks
