[Elecraft] P3 feature

2015-09-21 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
The PX3 supports CW/RTTY/PSK text display. Did this ever get added to the P3?
I think it was on the 'wish' list. Sure would be nice to have in conjunction
with the SVGA addon!

[Elecraft] Fw: Cooler KX Plus Heatsink Install

I had the exact same experience with the longer screw being slightly off
center. And, since I did not do the build on mine, I was unaware of the sticky
tape holding the old heat sink to the case. Finally figured it out after
reviewing the build directions, and then pushed on one end, fairly hard, till
it popped off. Sailed half way across the room! But, all was fine and I
completed the heat sink replacement. Fred later advised to use a heat gun, or
hair dryer on the outside of the old heat sink to soften the sticky tape so
that it would come off easier.

Very satisfied with the VE7FMN heat sink and Fred's support and advice! Very
nice upgrade!

[Elecraft] KX3 and digital modes

2015-05-13 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
I finally upgraded my little KX1 to a new KX3. LOVE the KX3! Intent is to use
it mainly when I travel, but also as a nice QRP addition to the shack. My
K3/KPA500 combo is still my main shack rig. One of the things I want to try is
using the KX3 with is low power digital modes, like WSPR and maybe JT65. I have
been trying to hook things up to my radio laptop and so far, I have managed to
get half way: JT65 decodes signals perfectly, so that side is working OK. The
problem is when I plug the transmit side into the KX3 and the laptop output
(speakers), the KX3 immediately flips into TX mode (little red light comes on).
No RF is being sent, there are NO tones being generated from the laptop. It's
like PTT is activated. Doesn't matter if JT65 is running or not, the plug goes
into the laptop and the TX light goes on. I am using the supplied 'green' cable
from the KX3 cable packet. It is a stereo cable. The radio is set to VOX on. If
either cable end is removed, the TX light goes o
 ut. What have I missed?
BTW, same results with two different laptops.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] KX1 and Anker LION battery

2014-10-18 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
I use an Elecraft KX1 and an Anker Astro Pro2 LION battery when I go QRP in the
field. The combination works very well, and allows me to run the KX1 at the
full 3 watt level. However, the last two times I used this arrangement, I had
the Anker battery shut down on me. It would power right back up, but , still,
it was disconcerting. After finally reading about the battery and doing some in
house testing, I finally figured out that the KX1 draws such little current
while idling (good thing), that it fooled the battery enough that the Anker's
auto shut off (also a good thing, if you are actually charging a device) kicked
in. I didn't want this, so I started toying with the KX1 to see if I could make
it draw enough current while idling. What I finally ended up doing was turning
on the small LED light and leaving it on while operating. So far, the battery
has been staying on. Not an elegant solution, but SEEMS to work. Anyone have a
better idea on how to defeat the auto shutoff of
this battery? I have not yet queried Anker about this, but that's next.
But, as I mentioned up front, this combination works very well and I am very
pleased with the results.

[Elecraft] K3/P3/SVGA

2014-07-10 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
Anyone from Elecraft, will the K3/P3/SVGA ever have the ability to decode on
the P3/SVGA attached big screen while NOT sending the decoded output to the K3
VFO B area? I know it will decode to the large screen and at the same time send
that decoded text to the K3, but it sure would be nice to NOT send the the
decode text to the K3 VFO B area. I certainly have NO idea what's involved, but
it seems it might be a firmware change.

I have been debating an SVGA add-on, since I have my K3/P3 and KPA500 pretty
much loaded for my needs, but don't see any real benefit to the SVGA card
without the above stated ability.

Seems a few others have also thought this a good idea some time back, but I
thought to ask again. Is it on an Elecraft 'to do' list?

BTW, my K3/P3/KPA500 is the best ham gear I have ever owned and operated in 50+
years of being a ham! Nothing else comes close. And, I have had a LOT of gear!

Re: [Elecraft] K3/P3/SVGA

2014-07-10 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
Thanks Dick! Not the answer I was hoping to hear, but it makes sense now
that I think about it. So, the K3 utility terminal screen is the same as
what as seen on a P3/SVGA. I've should have thought that out, but sometimes
getting older doesn't always make it easy.

You answered my question, but probably no P3/SVGA card/LCD in my future.
It's pretty, but with my limited RTTY/PSK usage, not necessary to me. The P3
does what I need it to do, and 'fits' on my desk.

The P3 SVGA doesn't do CW, RTTY, or PSK31 decoding. The K3 does the
decoding and presents it in the VFO B area. A copy is available through
the K3 serial port programmers command set, and P3 SVGA uses that TB
command. The K3 Utility uses the same K3 decode mechanism for its Terminal
page. The heavy lifting for TTY, PSK, and CW decoding is done in K3
firmware.

[Elecraft] HC5 element change

2013-12-24 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
Some years back, someone gave me an older Heil Proset with the HC5 element. It
needed some serious maintenance, but after exchanging the cable and adding new
earmuffs, it's now up to par. I also have a newer Proset that has the HC4
element. This is the one I have been using. Both can be connected to my K3 on
the front via the AD1K cable. I prefer the front over the back of the K3
connections. Since I have two Prosets, I am thinking of changing the HC5
element in the older Proset with a W2ENY replacement element. Inexpensive way
to 'upgrade' the Proset, since the HC6, as far as I know, isn't available on
it's own. Has anyone made this 'upgrade'? Should it work as advertised in my
case? Anything I should look out for?

BTW, I looked at the CM500, and while it appears to be a nice boom headset, I
don't need another headset hanging in my closet.

Happy Holidays from frozen Ohio!!!

[Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY

2013-05-18 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
I am trying to decide if I should invest in an SVGA card for my P3. I know
about all the nice features that the SVGA card will give me, but I have been
told by a top contester that the K3 decoder is not as good as MMTTY. I like on
occasion to do FSK/D, and have been using the built in function of the K3 with
fair success. With my old, displaced Pro 3, I used MMTTY/EXTFSK and a Green
Heron Radio Boss with very good results. I still have the Radio Boss, and see
that it would be easy to implement with my K3. So, the only question I have is
does anyone have an unbiased opinion on which offers better results in the
decode of FSK/D?
Certainly, I can do the Radio Boss option for less than $50, since I have the
unit. The SVGA would run me around $300 (I would need another monitor). I am
not a heavy user of RTTY or PSK, but on occasion use those modes. I am leaning
to the less expensive Radio Boss option, or just continue with the K3/terminal

So, again which is a better RTTY decoder: MMTTY or the built in K3 decoder? Or,
are the pretty much the same?

[Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY

2013-05-18 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
But, I do not have a P3 SVGA card. I know how well MMTTY/EXTFSK works. I've
used it. The question is: is the native K3 FSK/D decoder as good or better than
MMTTY?

Before I charge off and drop $300 on the SVGA card and monitor, to use mainly
for RTTY, is it worth it? I am content with the P3, and don't really need a
large monitor showing me the same thing. Short on table space anyway.

Has anyone out there with both, used/compared them?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY

2013-05-18 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
Yes, that is the answer I was wondering about. I have had other K3 owners
pretty much tell me the same thing, but thought to ask the group. As Iain
suggested, I could compare both decoders without the SVGA card, and probably
will (sorry, Iain, I misunderstood your reply). But, I am leaning towards
using the external TTL box.

Jim,
I have the SVGA card in my P3 and I am very active in digital modes.
My input is if you are buying the SVGA card just for digital modes like
FSK/D etc then don’t buy it.

Any software package like MMTTY is better than using the K3, P3/SVGA.
I really like having the SVGA and the large display and I have tried using
it for digital modes but always go back to computer and digital software.
Its lot easier to use, better copy, decrypts, lots more features, etc.

SVGA card is great for lots of other reasons though. 73
Hope this helps.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY

I am trying to decide if I should invest in an SVGA card for my P3. I know
about all the nice features that the SVGA card will give me, but I have
been told by a top contester that the K3 decoder is not as good as MMTTY.
I like on occasion to do FSK/D, and have been using the built in function
of the K3 with fair success. With my old, displaced Pro 3, I used
MMTTY/EXTFSK and a Green Heron Radio Boss with very good results. I still
have the Radio Boss, and see that it would be easy to implement with my
K3. So, the only question I have is does anyone have an unbiased opinion
on which offers better results in the decode of FSK/D?
Certainly, I can do the Radio Boss option for less than $50, since I have
the unit. The SVGA would run me around $300 (I would need another
monitor). I am not a heavy user of RTTY or PSK, but on occasion use those
modes. I am leaning to the less expensive Radio Boss option, or just
continue with the K3/terminal program readout.
So, again which is a better RTTY decoder: MMTTY or the built in K3
decoder? Or, are the pretty much the same?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK/D vs MMTTY

2013-05-18 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
Yes, I realize that I do not need the SVGA card to compare them. Wasn't
thinking it through.

I first looked at the W3YY board, but remembered I had the other unit
somewhere around here, did a search and found it. With a DB15 Y (I also have
the PR6) cable and a 15 pin shell, I can easily construct the necessary cable
to connect the 'Radio Boss' to the K3. Thanks for the advice!

Case closed, I'm going this way.

[Elecraft] Macros

2013-02-16 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
Had a situation this morning where my two macros started giving me goofy
responses, and eventually would lock up my K3. The K3 still worked OK, and all
was cleared up with a power off/on. I couldn't get the macros to work
consistently, no matter what I tried, including the 'soft' reset'. So, I
reloaded my firmware (4.60) and this apparently corrected the failure. I had
been toying with several different macros and wonder if my playing around
somehow fouled things up. I only have 2 macros: PF1 HOLD to put the rig into CW
and PF2 HOLD to put the rig into FSK. These are simple macros (thanks K1HTV)
and have been working without a hitch, until I attempted to get fancy.

 My questions are:
Is it possible to fill up the macro memory slots, even when they appear empty?
Is there a way to clear/reset ALL the macros without reloading the firmware?
(this seemed to fix my problem)

Additional curiosity: I was getting an FT0 on the terminal screen over and over
of the utility program when things were fouled/locked up. Radio was NOT in
split. I do not have the SR.

The radio and macros are now working as they should, but somehow I am sure I
messed it up somehow. Any ideas?

Thanks...

Re: [Elecraft] Macros

2013-02-16 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
The 2 macros I use work OK since I reloaded the firmware. I tried so many
different, fancy things prior to getting messed up, I'm not sure what they
were now, but it was a lot. That's when I attempted to go back to what I
knew was OK, but they didn't work either. That's when I got desperate and as
a last resort, reloaded the 4.60 firmware.

Here are the two ORIGINAL macros that now work once again:

CW MD3;BW0040;SWH45;MN255; /* PF1 hold */
FSK MD6;DT2;BW0050;SWH47;MN255; /* PF2 hold */

Seems something in the firmware got out of sorts by my screwing around with
those two macros, but I don't know how.

Thanks ... 73

Re: [Elecraft] Macros

2013-02-16 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
I spent a few hours trying to understand what I am seeing, and it is a case
where the assigned macros are not being remembered to their assigned PF
keys. They work the first time, but after the second PF key gets depressed
(FSK) only the SECOND one is retained in BOTH PF1 and PF. The first macro is
not assigned to PF1 hold anymore, the SECOND macro is assigned to BOTH PF1
and PF2 hold. In this case, since I have FSK as second, it's the one that is
in play on BOTH PF keys. I reversed them and got CW to be dominant. The
macros work perfect from the utility program, just as I want them to.
I did do a read to the utility program, and the macros are in the EPROM as
they were written. Only thing left is the macro assign function is being
somehow corrupted/changed.

Recently I had my K3 back to Elecraft for an FPF board replacement. I sure
hope it's not that again. I sure hope you guys have an idea. I am out of
them.

BTW, without the MN255, the display stays in menu mode. MN255 brings is back
to a normal operating display.

I agree with Joe.

I don't use MACRO's, but I do write software that uses the K3 Command
set.

The first thing I see is that you are calling the MN255 command in
each of the MACROs. The MN command is only needed if you are
accessing the menu to change a setting, and you are not doing any
changes to the menu, so you can remove MN255 from your MACRO's.

The rest of the commands look OK, but I suggest you create your
MACRO's using the K3 Utility. If you do that you can test MACRO's
until they work as you want them to.

Good luck.

2013-02-16 Thread Jim Leder (Hotmail)
Don , I owe you. I've been smacking my head since you suggested it. I
removed the 2 switch parameters, and now it works as it should. Interesting,
I have seen many examples that do this sort of thing, and they all have the
switch parameter imbedded in them. They also do the assign to PF1/PF2.
This macro did once work. I can't say why, but it did. Guess it doesn't
matter now.

I don't do many macros, but I like to learn new things and really try to
exploit the great features on this wonderful piece of gear. Best radio I've
had in over 50 years!

Don and Tom, thanks for the support and suggestions. Guess I'm not too old
to learn something new.
