No, I haven't. ...
A friend changed my settings to display Morse to text and in trying to shut

[Elecraft] K2 error replacing Q7 and Q8 PA devices

2019-06-21 Thread Jimithy66
Removed the recently installed old defective devices and soldered in the
new ones and bolted the case together and in my haste to see if they
worked forgot to tighten the heat sink 4/40 nuts and touched the key and
heard a high pitched squeek as the $19 (plus $8.95 postage ) matched
 devices bit the dust.

This cheap partially built K2 flea market find is becoming time consuming
and expensive. Laying around for 18 years in the open has made the dust
and nicotine covered solder pads a bit oxidized and harder to solder.

Sometimes a bargain is not the bargain it appears to be.

[Elecraft] K2 Original problem of High Current and Low Power

2019-06-18 Thread Jimithy66
Other problems discovered along the way with this partially
assembled kit.

Hi Don,

Thank you so much for sticking with me on this.

K2 #2438 Ver. A with no updates.

I had measured 1.48V at bases of Q7 and Q8. (installed.)

And as you suggested I removed the PA transistors

and now measure 0.63 at base terminals with PAs out.

I don't know how you figured that it was PA Q7 and Q8

that were bad Don but you were spot on !

It looks like the PA bias circuit is working but would

like your opinion.

The table in the manual for Q13 says:

E = 0.6V

B= 1.3V

C= 7.5V (With PA transistors in)

My voltages are :

E= 0.63

B= 1.2

C= 8.17 (With PA transistors out)

Think I should go ahead and put the new PA

transistors in leaving the old bias transistors

Q11 and 13 in place ?

Thanks

73,

Jim / W1FMR

PS... The 8T transmit voltage is 8.19v.

[Elecraft] Fwd: K2 Early Ver. A Power out problem #2438

Hi Don, the K2 is #2438
And has been sitting around half built for 18 years or so:-0

The manual for Rev. A calls for 16 turns for L25 and L26 and they are 16
turns.

I will order the K2PAkit, and I have a good solder sucker and the wooden
toothpick is a great idea. Thanks...

R50 is 1/2 watt.

With the PA transistors removed will check the bias circuit and reflow Bias
solder
joints before changing Q11 and Q13.

Too bad there wasn't an easy way to isolate bias from the PA.

Don, as a side note,
If I touch a meter lead to R61, the collector of Q13, (PA bias) the 40m
output power jumps up to 7 watts with Hi Cur displayed.
Other than that the power barely reaches 2 watts with 1.9 amps.

Thanks again Don,

[Elecraft] K2 Early Ver. A Power out problem #2438

2019-06-13 Thread Jimithy66
I finished building a basic kit with no options and the power output will
not rise above 2 watts and current (2A) is too high for that power.
Hi Cur flashes briefly before power output settles at 2 watts.

Voltage checks found the PA base bias circuit putting out
1.4 VDC but 0.8 V is expected.

Two PNA transistors Q11 and Q13 make up
the bias circuit and wonder if anyone else remembers
seeing this problem, and what may have caused it ?

 Thanks,

will not go above 2 watts on an external power meter

"Hi Cur" flashes briefly and power is limited to 2 watts
DisplayE = 11.9  and I = 2.0  Keyed (Un-keyed I=0.22) .

Any idea where to start looking ?

[Elecraft] K2 PLL Ref. Oscillator Range Test Problem.

2019-05-21 Thread Jimithy66
I am building an older QRP K2 kit ser. # 2438 Ver. A in
the Alignment and test section Part 11. pg. 57, the
PLL Ref. Oscillator Range Test is out of limits.

The Reference High and Low frequencies are OK with
readings (12100.53 high and 12089.43 low) with range
limits of 11.5 - 25 KHz but it is low, 11.1 KHz.
Is this a problem ?

In the PLL troubleshooting section all readings are OK
except the BFO buffer output (0.025 - 0.070 VRMS )
is slightly high 0.076 VRMS. Is this a problem ?

And lastly,
How do I visit the archives on this list ?

Thank you,

[Elecraft] K2 Partially built extremely bare bones version A, # 2438.

2019-05-07 Thread Jimithy66
Bought at a Ham Flea Market about 1/3 built and needing
all upgrades and some missing parts. Am surprised that
parts are still available from Elecraft, or rather hope that
they are. It came with 2 right side panels and no left side.
And if all goes well and it eventually works will be looking
for an auto tuner board. Very excited about getting into it
to see what comes out but it may be a long term project..

[Elecraft] K2 Noise on 160m

2013-11-26 Thread Jimithy66
Thanks to all that responded to my K2 problem and thanks for the Tips
Sverre, LA3ZA.
I had done a simple tone adjustment and probably messed up the filters
because the
receive frequency shifts when filter 3 and 4 are selected. After that is
corrected I
 will re-visit the noise problem.

Thanks again Gary, Don, Sverre, and the K9 that responded.

See you in the QRP ARCI 160m 6 hour sprint Wed. evening (in the US).

*Sidetone frequency:* Don't be tempted to adjust the sidetone frequency if
you want it higher or lower in pitch (Menu, sidetone P menu). Many radios
allow this and the K2's menu gives the impression that it is
straightforward to do so. The flip side of the coin is that all the filter
settings (XFIL) and the audio filter (KAF2) also need to be readjusted,
otherwise the filters will not match the new sidetone.

[Elecraft] K2 Signal to Noise on 160m ?

2013-11-24 Thread Jimithy66
Is there normally high noise on 160m with a K2 ?

Comparing the K2 to an old Ten Tec Delta the
k2 signals seem to be lower and noise higher.

A sharp sizzling frying pan noise was pronounced
on the K2 and uncomfortable to listen to but barely
there on the Delta.

This a used K2 and I adjusted the STP (Sidetone Pitch)
to my liking and wonder if that messed something up
or is the K2 noisy on 160m ?

This is the QRP K2 with ATU but no Noise Blanker or DSP.

[Elecraft] K1-4 Low power output only on 15 meters.

2013-06-11 Thread Jimithy66
My K1 was a wonderful radio on all bands 40 - 17m.

However 17m saw very little use and 15m was desired..

The 26.050 crystal was replaced with the kit supplied 29.000 MHz
crystal for 15m and the K1 realigned on all bands.

All seemed to go well with the receive and transmit alignment
with the power level set to 2 watts per the manual.

However now the power will not go above 2 watts on 15m..

All bands go to 5 watts measured on a WM-2 watt meter
but on 15m the output stops at 2 watts..

15m programs OK from 0.2 to 2.0 watts output but not higher.

The K1 display reads 5.0 when being set with buttons but
the K1 power output display reads only around 2.1 or so watts.
.
All frequencies are correct on another receiver.

Am I missing something ? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you , 72/73

Jim / W1FMR

[Elecraft] WTB a K1-4 board only with 15m option - Wanted

2013-05-28 Thread Jimithy66
I built my K1 with the 17m option and now find I want 15m
for QRP contests.

I don't think it is a good idea to remove components and
rebuild for 15m but may do it if I have to.

I have the 80 / 160m board and love it. In fact it's 160m
that got me hooked on QRP contesting.
