[Elecraft] P3 vs SDR-IQ

2015-07-31 Thread Joe Word
Thanks to all that replied to my post.

1. I am using Tracking mode and have Averaging set at 14. I want to see the
SSB pattern smoothly and not like an O'scope. I always slow the pattern
down to see clearly the transmitted bandwidth and treble/bass balance.

2. I do not use Fixed mode, If I am tuning up the band I want to see whats
ahead, in Fixed mode you can not. But the scope pattern stays 'clean in
Fixed mode, I wish it stayed clean in Tracking mode. When I say clean I
mean Averaging does not revert back to 0 while tuning.

John, ZS5J please note, on the Flex 6500 (and all 6000 series) that used
SmartSDR software, the panadapter is in Fixed Mode (to use a Elecraft term)
and can not be changed. This is the reason I no longer own a Flex 6000
series radio.

I have tried the various Auto Adjust parameters in Fixed Mode, but they do
not resolve my concern.

Joe N9VX

---
Hi Joe - Do you have signal averaging turned on to reduce the noise floor?
If you do, it has to stop averaging when the freq is being changed while
tuning, temporarily raising the noise floor slightly. It then re-starts
multi-pass averaging once you stop tuning. This is normal for signal
averaging. I run with averaging set =2 or 3 passes. When I tune I barely
notice a small increase in the noise floor. If you have a lot of local
pulse noise, you might want to turn on the P3s NB function to help. If
Averaging is turned off, I can't think of a normal scenario where the
noise floor
would go up when tuning the band. It certainly does not here.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Eric

I am told the SVGA option does the same thing. Have owned radios from
Apache Labs and Flex
and used the SDR-IQ/SpectraVue and LP-Pan panadapters and all of them
do not have
this problem. On SDR-IQ/SpectraVue the pattern smears some when
tuning, but no noise.

[Elecraft] [K3] Fan Replacement

2014-08-14 Thread Joe Word
Has anyone replaced the K3 fans with a quieter model? If so, please provide
the model number and source.

The first K3 I built the fans were very quite, but the last one I build was
pretty loud and sold it. I am thinking of getting another if I can find a
quieter fan.

Please note: I am not looking for comments that your fans are quite or
loud, don't want to clog up the list. I know what fans they did use and
what model they use now (as of a year ago), so do not need that info.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Heat Expansion Pop

2011-12-14 Thread Joe Word
I changed the screws in my amp yesterday morning and ran it yesterday
afternoon and night, and have not heard any pop since. I used the
3/16 that were extras from a K3 build. I got from the hardware store
4-40 1/2 long flat heads, but the counter-sink angle was different,
so I did not use them.

Here are the basic steps I used to change out the screws: You have to
remove the top cover (do not remove the screw second from the back on
the left (it attaches the safety interlock plunger). Remove the right
side panel and remove the front panel. Remove all the wires attached
to the front of the PA unit, remove the screws that go through the
bottom panel into the Z bracket on the PA unit, remove the two back
screws that go into the Z bracket. Then rotate the PA unit out from
the front so you can get to the screws to be changed. I replaced one
screw at a time, did not tighten them until all were replaced.

Joe N9VX

---
My amp has been click free for four days now. To clarify, page 22 Fig.27,
is the area I'm referring to. Change the five 5/16 screws to 3/16 when
mounting the Z-bracket on the PA/LPF module. I also would have preferred to
use 1/4 screws but none come with the kit.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Heat Expansion Pop

2011-12-12 Thread Joe Word
Are you still pop free after changing the screws? Are the five screws
you changed the ones installed on page 22 of the assembly manual?

Thanks,

Joe N9VX

 --
I think I may have solved this problem. One of the other posts mentions that
the Z-bracket screws are too long and you don't get a tight fit. I changed
the five screws from 5/16 to 3/16 and did notice a better grip between the
bracket and the PA assembly. I have run it all evening and haven't heard a
click or a pop. I even ran the temp up and still nothing. Will it last? I
don't know, but it seems to have fixed it. The guy who suggested this has
submitted it to Elecraft for a change. Good luck and lets hear if any of you
 have the same result.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Heat Expansion Pop

2011-12-09 Thread Joe Word
This is what I know at this point. Based on comments on this board and
private emails, this is a common issue, I would think a good many
people that don't think they have the issue just don't hear it due to
hearing loss or head phone use. It happens with both factory made and
kits.

I tried to resolve mine by loosening the top panel screws (so not
torqued), but no help.
I loosened the transformer bolt and re-tighten it (it was tight to
start with), but no help.

Could this be from the heat sensing device that triggers the fan?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Heat Expansion Pop

2011-12-08 Thread Joe Word
Gary,

That sounds like what I am hearing, thought it was a relay controlling
the fan, but as you said, it did not pop when the fan came on/off.

Joe N9VX

-
Mine pops or clicks too.

In my case, it sounds like a relay switching. I thought at first it was
something sensing the temperature and changing the fan speed, but the pop
doesn't (often) coincide with a change in fan speed, so I think that's a red
herring.

Another ZL told me his KPA does the same thing.

Our amps still work just fine though!

Personally, I simply kill the main supply power line to the station. That
does the same thing with one switch.
Answer: I also kill the power to the station, but I run the amp on
240v and have no power switch.

Here in Texas we get a lot of lightning storms that wreak havoc on our
electrical grid. In the 12 years I've lived here, I have lost 2
televisions, a microwave and a range to lightning related power issues.
Answer: I also unplug in warm weather, but in the winter I do not.

The amp is slightly warm with the back switch on.

I might add, I love the amp, it's one of the best pieces of equipment

[Elecraft] KPA500 audio muffled?

2011-11-15 Thread Joe Word
Chuck,

I had muffled audio reports while using a Tokyo Hi Power 1.2Kfx amp.
It has coming from RF getting into the amp. THP wrote it off, saying
nothing they could (would) do about it because I was on the second
floor. But... I now have a KPA-500 and have no problems on any band at
any power level.

Just a thought!

Joe N9VX

I have gotten a few reports of sounding like my audio is muffled as compared
to running the K3 alone. It is true that with several listeners in different
states, there is not a consensus of opinion on that. Some of the guys think
it sounds just fine, and some say they can hear a slight muffled sound with
the KPA turned on. The point of comparing it to K3 only and K3 with KPA500
is that the mic is not in the equation. The report is clearly that the amp
sounds muffled. Not unreadable, just slightly muffled.
I have a bias current of 0.4A...about the only thing I can think of to
check. I think there was some discussion of setting the bias current here,
but I can't find it again. What is the range of bias current for best
linearity? I don't see any help in the manual.

[Elecraft] KPA500 General Questions

2011-09-26 Thread Joe Word
I am considering a KPA500 and have some questions for those that own one:

1. What Input SWR are you seeing? Does it vary by band?

2. Is there a lag in band switching when not using a K3 (Used with
non-Elecraft radio).

3. In normal SSB operation, how loud is the fan? I know this varies
per person, some don't hear fan noise and others do. What would you
compare it to? As an example, the Yaesu MARK-V Field is OK, but the
MARK-V 200 watt model is too loud for me.

[Elecraft] KPA-500 Features and Pricing

2010-09-09 Thread Joe Word
I agree with Jack's comments below 100%. Sounds like the amp is way
over priced to me.

Joe N9VX
no K3 at this time, but thinking about another one.

-
It looks like Elecraft may be abandoning their traditional most bang
for the buck market position in favor of selling over priced matching
accessories to stupid yuppies.

Unlike the K3, a $2000 500W amp is not going to be in the best value
position in anyone's analysis, although I'm sure they will sell a few
to the true believers.

Currently, used prices for ALS-600's run $800 to $900 and ALS-1300's
are showing up for sale at $1800 to $2000.

In my case, there is a finite amount of money available for radio
station enhancements. When I can buy a solid state MFJ for ~$1.50/watt
or an older no-tune ETO Alpha for ~$1.00/watt, a $4.00/watt Amp that's
principal virtue seems to be matching my K3, doesn't have a snow balls
chance in Hades of ever gracing my desk.

But maybe the rumored ridiculous price point is just a smoke screen and
the real product will show up with a more palatible price.

[Elecraft] K3 - ESSB Availability

2008-05-29 Thread Joe Word
Any update on when the ESSB function will be turned on in the
firmware? I am using the 2.7 filter with various dynamic microphones
and getting good audio reports, but not as good as I get from my Icom
756 PRO III. Would like to try a little wider bandwidth (about 3.0)
and see if I can match the PRO. Will need the 6.0 filter of course.

The various dynamic mics I am using have gotten excellent audio
reports using rigs like the Yaesu Mark IV, Kenwood TS-870 and etc.

I have had three different people view my transmit bandwidth on their
spectrum scopes and confirmed that my 2.7 filter is in fact
transmitting at 2.7 bandwidth (not 2.9 as previous thought).

[Elecraft] K3 - RIT XIT

2008-05-29 Thread Joe Word
I wish RIT and XIT would stay on when changing bands or memory
channels, it goes off when going to another band or memory channel.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

[Elecraft] K3 - Setup After Firmware Upgrade

2008-05-19 Thread Joe Word
What setup is required after firmware upgrade? Say 1.88 to 1.96b.

Should we do the Low and High TX Gain Calibration?

What else?

[Elecraft] Fwd: a real bandscope

2008-05-19 Thread Joe Word
I alteady sent this, but do not see the postion... so here it is again.

I vote for a stand alone bandscope. I am tied to a computer 8 hours a
day and don't want to be tied to one in my hobby. The IC-756PRO III
stays until the K3 has one.

If we have to have a computer, might as well have a Flex Radio.

[Elecraft] K3 Questions

2008-05-15 Thread Joe Word
1. How many volts is the mic bias?

2. Why does the filter selection always end in 5 (2.65, 2.75, 2.85 etc)?

3. Can the Absolute S Meter function be set to ignore the RF Gain setting?

Thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] Fwd: K3: High-Power TX Gain Calibration - No Output

2008-05-13 Thread Joe Word
I fixed the problem. Removed KPA3 and found a gray wire out of T1, at
the C1 end, was under the mounting bracket (KPA3 to RF Shield). The
K3 now puts out full power and the High Power Gain Calibration is
complete for all bands.

Thanks Gary at Elecraft for the excellent help.

And thanks to all of you for your comments and suggestions.

What a nice receiver!!!

My resistance test (page 39) on U12 is less than the 500 ohms per
manual. It is 350 to 400 ohmn (different scales on digital meter). My
analog meter shows 270 ohms.

Anyone else had this issue?

I emailed support, but thought I would check here also.
