[Elecraft] XV-144
Hi all. I have a XV-144 here which was not built by me. But all parts seem to be in order. DIP switches are OK. No issue on power up. LO voltage level seems OK. Problem is adjusting R13, even at full CCW rotation I cannot get the voltage below 284mV. I had a look around and it seems the parts are in the right places. On my K2 when it powers up I hear some relay clicks, should I hear the same on the XV-144? A lot of the paths will depend on the relay status and I hear nothing at start-up from the XV-144. So I am wondering if it has a control issue first of all. Any help appreciated John ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] XV144
Don Thanks for the speedy reply. The manual is Rev C April 2006. It is on page 25 and is the second step on the right hand column. ### Skip this step if you are aligning an XV432. On an XV50, XV144 or XV222, verify that the tuning slugs have been removed from the following inductors. If not, remove the cores and discard them. These slugs will not be used: L1 L10 L17 L11 ### I cannot see a Rev C manual for download from the web site and non of the errata shows this. Only things I can see for download are *XV Transverter (50, 144, 222, 432) Owner's Manual Rev B. (March, 2006) *XV Transverter Owner's Manual Errata Rev B-3 (April 24, 2006) *Assembly Manual for XV50, XV144 and XV222 Rev B. [Elecraft] ROHS COMPLIANT? Do you really care?
Hi all I think the RoHS issue has been flogged as much as it can be. I also think Elecrafts position is being confused a bit (as I understand it anyway). As far as I can see there is no claim that the kits are RoHS compliant. This blossomed from the price increase thread where I believe Elecraft mentioned they were buying RoHS compliant parts which are costing more but they had to do it as they were mainstream available and leaded parts were becoming harder to find. There is no coc, no documentation and no audit trail claiming RoHS compliance, so regardless of the dialogue here, due diligence has not been observed at any level therfor the importer will be liable for non conformance (the EU importer, NOT Elecraft) if applicable. Not sure what Elecraft will do for PCB finish but I would guess rather than switch to ENIG or similar the plating will still be Sn/Pb HASL as the preferred solder alloy is still going to contain lead. So forget the parts. The SSB adapter board I have here with DC 23/06 says RoHS on it but the plating looks like HASL SnPb to me (not compliant) and if it is just a pure tin finish (Pb Free) then it makes no sense for Elecraft to say Pb Free solders void warranty as SAC305 alloys in Kester or Multicore will flow just as easy when fluxed. For rework some drill hole apertures will need to be enlarged and if the PCB material is sub standard you risk lifting some lands due to the slightly higher temperatures involved when applying the iron or desoldering tool. As long as a single component inside the box is not compliant (remember that also includes any plastics and plated metals) then forget about it. Assemble with SnPb solder, forget about it. All roads to non compliance. The only issue not fully investigated is if the kits actually have to conform, as a finished product placed on the EU market commercially, yes they do, regardless of country of origin. EU manufacturers are responsible for the audit trail and compliance measures (usually wrapped up inside a formal QC system) but anyone importing parts or products into the EU (parts) to be placed on the market not only take responsibility for their own actions, but those of the external EU manufacturer also. Regulations vary country to country, they are not uniform across the EU as their enforcement methods are different, but the term due diligence is used quite a bit and to demonstrate its execution is not so easy, is the part compliant?, yes, how do you know?, the suppliers says so, can the supplier be trusted? Does the supplier have lot traceability back to the factory? How was the materials tested? Which method was used...are there certified lab results.. You would hate to see the flowchart / decision tree out of our QC system at work We also had to drop any suppliers unable to meet the audit trail requirements as well as scrap / remove from site all non compliant inventory as contamination of complaint stock was also a risk. That's risk assessment at its best. It is really a big can of worms to open. It kind of takes the fun out of the whole building deal I can tell you! A few hours of working the front panel of the K2 and using the mic helps put the fun back in it for a while :-) John ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. So it might be a good idea if the fine folks at Elecraft were to offer a roll of lead solder as a purchasable option for those of us who are unable to source it in Europe. Steve For the moment you can obtain your supplies here http://www.rapidonline.com/productinfo.aspx?id=-1tier1=Tools%2c+Fasteners+% 26+Production+Equipmenttier2=Soldering+Equipmenttier3=Solder+%26+Fluxesti er4=60%2f40+soldermoduleno=30459 In the UK you will probably find better service off Rapid even with mail order than you will with Maplins. You might need to work on that URL a bit as it is a bit long. Leaded solder is not going away anytime soon, but its visibility is being reduced as most service organisations are taking the opportunity now to remove lead based products completely (as actually handling lead is also not too healthy!) so it is also becoming prominent in HSE risk assemments also, RoHS only accelerated and raised the visibility of the issue. It has been illegal to use lead based solder on copper pipes carrying potable water for a long time now, but for heating systems its OK. Adding solder into the kits is a nice idea though. We -strongly- recommend continuing to use regular lead based solder to build our kits. Kester 44, and other 63/37, 60/40 lead/tin mix solders are not going away in the US or in Eu and work much better for soldering both RoHS and non-RoHS tinned parts. Removal of non-lead solder is difficult at best for most builders, potentially damaging PC boards and components, and thats why our warranty prohibits its usage. Lead free solder is really designed for use in mass production lines. Elecraft strongly recommends (and their warranty requires) continued use of traditional lead/tin solder, and it is perfectly legal to do so in EU. That's good enough for me. Larry N8LP Robert T. RE: [Elecraft] K2 price increase, RoHS
Eric So are you saying that all Kx kits are now RoHS compliant? Except the solder preference of the builder? As soon as Lead based solder is used on the Kx kit it will automatically loose its compliant status. Should probably ass that to the manual ;-) Sorry I cut out all the other post you made, its the only point of interest to me as I don't see any RoHS statement in the box or on your web site. Is RoHS compliance really an issue for you? Other than the cost? All my surplus inventory, especially semiconductors are being gobbled up left, right centre by US sales agents, passives are starting to interest them also, especially chip inductors. As you are based in US and thats where the products are placed on the market, its the EU importer (customer) who is actually responsible for compliance. As the importer is not actually taking the product to manufacture for commercial gain I am not sure how that goes, or if the legislation even applies. At the end of the day you are selling parts, with instructions, not a consumer product as such. But if you want to talk about solder issues, a typical hike in solder costs (lead based, say £5 UKP/Kg) is now hiked to £15 UKP/Kg (SAC305) and thats based on 100Kg+/Month usage and as the majority of it is tin copper you can guess where the demand has come from on the tin. But I have not seen any significant increase in parts costs, in UK anyway. Sorry for OT and straying a bit here, I avoided the money issue as I still thing your products are good value for money even if you increase the cost again. [Elecraft] What should the power output of the K2 be?
Hi all I have been having great fun with the K2 but I am wondering what the output should be? 10W or 15W? The Po control seems to indicate 15W should be possible. The PA alignment seems OK, or at least as per the manual, Po/current seems to match at the levels stated. But occasionally the built in detector seems to read a little higher than the Po is set to and the full scale setting of 15 only seems to yield 11w or so. -Original Message- From: Ron D'Eau Claire [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, July 16, 2006 9:00 PM To: 'John A. Ross [Ecraft]'; Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Elecraft] What should the power output of the K2 be? Welcome to the K2-club John! I built mine in 2000. It's a FB rig. Ron Thanks, you are right, it is a very nice rig indeed and fantastic fun to build and work on. The specified output of the K2 is at least 10 watts CW. The actual output varies with the band. It is a function of the overall transmitter path gain. It tends to peak about 40 meters, where most K2's will make 15 watts output, or very close to it. Up on 10 meters is where the overall gain is lowest and many K2's just barely make the specified 10 watts output. Since you're still getting familiar with your K2, here's a couple of things to remember: 1) The POWER control sets the requested power output. The K2 monitors the actual power output and adjusts the transmitter gain as needed for what you've requested. The control allows you to request any power up to 15 watts, but you can't get that much on all bands. OK, that makes sense now. I was not sure if the sample/control loop was doing something wrong. You never know when firmware has a part in it ;-) 2) Because the POWER control circuitry is monitoring the power output to determine how much gain the transmitter circuits should have, the accuracy of the output power setting depends upon how accurately the K2 measures its output. A basic QRP K2 uses a simple RF voltmeter to monitor the output. It is highly-dependent upon an accurate, non-reactive 50-ohm load for good accuracy. Any significant SWR at the transmitter output will affect it, and the actual power output. The (KAT2, etc.) ATU's use a bridge circuit that is a little more accurate, but can still be thrown off by reactive terminations. I had not installed the ATU yet, Po was dumped into a DL-600 then checked again on a 2955B so I am pretty sure the loads were OK. 3) If you change the POWER control setting you have to transmit before the new power level takes effect, since the K2 must sense the output RF to tell how to adjust the circuits. That means that you may notice that the output is nearly zero when you hit the first dit or dah after turning the K2 on. It'll immediately jump up to whatever you have the control set for. The same is in reverse when you turn the power down. The first time you touch the key the power will still be up at the old higher level until there's RF for the circuit to sense. OK, clear now. 3) The K2 is rated at 10 watts PEP on SSB, regardless of how much it will produce. That's because the distortion increases above 10 watts PEP in SSB mode. CW doesn't need a linear amp, so it's not an issue when you're pounding brass, but don't exceed 10 watts PEP on SSB on any band. 4) The Bargraph power display is in peak power, so it'll show flickers at the PEP peaks instead of the average power like most inexpensive external meters. That cause confusion sometimes when the opr notices that his external meter is wiggling around at 3 or 4 watts while his K2 shows 10 watt peaks on SSB. That's normal. The external meter is showing the average output, not the peak. There's a commercial (but not very expensive) product that does this - vBulletin. Post to the forum, it also shows up in email, and vice versa. Forum threading is done by email subject line. Messages are actually kept in a database like mySQL. Chris I have used and run vBulletin forums for a number of years and although there are mods available for nntp and email gateways VB does not support this feature natively. The forum threading is very frail, first filtered using message ID in the header, then checking for RE: FW: VB: AW: etc in the subject line to indicate a reply then checking the string after. I have ran these email mods and they won't deliver the service you expect. The only online community which has a well integrated email/web based interface is actually yahoo groups. It's pretty cool. I've been contemplating converting one of the lists I run just to see what it's like. I already ran 2 forums with the email / nntp gateway modification installed, I was well impressed, it makes a beautiful archive and really nice search features but threading is a bit unstable and requires a bit of volunteer action to moderate / organise mis-threaded posts. The thing to remember is that because the software has to be modified to do this, which means that the volunteer author may decide one day to stop support. The forum software is commercial and the support is second to none, but mod support is a big risk for a large forum. Just a few points to consider, constructively that is. John I liked usenet, too - better threading than the mail readers of the day. I think the key difference is that I didn't have to go looking for what's new, which is what it feels like trying to keep up with a dozen different fora... (usenet isn't dead, btw, it just smells funny). 73 de chris K6DBG ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
