Re: [Elecraft] K3 upgrade with USB and p3 using cblp3y cable.
Bingo! The USB plug on the K3 was not fully clicked in place. Thanks to offline suggestions, I checked yet again and found that although I thought I heard a click when I first plugged it in, it REALLY clicked when I got serious about it. P3 is now showing the K3 frequency again. The instructions even say to be sure the plug is fully seated. This is proof that 50 years experience in trouble shooting does not prevent embarrassment. [Elecraft] K3 upgrade with USB and p3 using cblp3y cable.
How do I get my Frequency display back while using the usb cable to the computer. The P3 utility seems to be working. I seem to have the latest firmware and utilities. All I can find is the the frequency display on P3 works with rs232. It was. I cannot get it with the CB3Y. I checked the switch on the KIO3B board. It is in the right position. [Elecraft] K3s, K3, K3+ definitions.
I was trying to come up with a good label for my Highly Upgraded K3 S/N 125. Elecraft is using K3*S. *So I thought K3s for my unit after I get the USB interface added. But K3s is being used by everyone in email for the real thing because the Stylized K3 with the slightly smaller large S is too hard to emulate on my standard keyboard. So K3s is used for the real thing and I am looking for a good label for S/N 125 with new synthesizers and the new interface and the low band mod etc., etc. K3+ K3u Maybe I will use a silver pen to add a small stylized + after the K3 on the panel. [Elecraft] Subject:, VFO B knob cracked
Very interesting. I have S/N 125 K3. I had gotten one of the heavier knobs for the main tuning and replaced the B vfo knob with the original large knob. The original small knob has been in the spare parts box for several years. It now has the same crack as shown in the pictures. All the way across and almost all the way down the dial face.I am pretty sure it did not have the crack when it was removed. I had been thinking about putting it back on but now will not. Re: [Elecraft] Molex comment
When someone has an intermittent power issue and their rig uses Molex, I check there first. I usually find the socket pin spread and making poor contact. I can fix it for a while by using a small tube to help compress the socket pin to proper size. I have no such problem with Power Poles. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 turn on Dual RX in menu
Thank you Don for your courteous and detailed reply. My problem turned out to be that RX SHFT was on. I was getting unexpected results when I performed the procedure according to the manual. I failed to recognize the RX SHFT response as an error code. After I duplicated your suggestion (as per the book), I knew I was doing it properly and was still missing something. I finally realized that I had the RX SHFT parameter enabled on this band. Of course, the book states that Dual RX and RX SHFT are incompatible and the SHFT must be off. Corrected that and all is well. Brain lapse corrected. To those who could not resist RTFM type comments, I can only say that as a long time early adopter of Elecraft I am fully aware of the necessity to read the manual fully. I have done so several times. On the day I sent my frustrated request for help, I had spent another two hours with the manual and KX3 and continually misinterpreted the error message. I was disappointed with the fact that I received several RTFM type comments without any useful information pointing to the real error that I knew I must be making repeatedly. Recognizing how these RTFM comments made me feel makes me very glad that I have refrained numerous times from making such comments when I thought it probably was appropriate. Again Don, I thank you for your ever courteous and accurate responses to those of us who sometimes go down the wrong path and miss the obvious even after reading the manual numerous times. Re: [Elecraft] Trade off PR6 vs PR6-10 pre-amp
Lou, I have received no other replies to my message. Additional comments would be welcome. In attempting to answer my own question, I suspect that the antenna bandwidth on 6M would limit out of band issues. The slightly higher gain of the PR6-10 with the same noise figure then might be an advantage by helping overcome cable loss. At least as long as strong signals are not overloading the front end. I will probably not switch. I presently have a good antenna on 24 and 28 MHz and do not really feel the need for more gain there. Perhaps if I did not have the trusted PR6 I might purchase the PR6-10 instead. 73, John Kh7t Lou, wrote 7/12/2913: John, did anyone reply to your questions? Have you made a decision? Would the 6 meter performance with the K3 using the PR6-10 be better or worse than the PR6 because of: 1. Wider pass band? More opportunity for out of band noise? 2. More gain? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Reload issues
I had the k3 flashing red light MCU load lockup problem this week. Tried all the recommended clean up of cables and so on with no results. Very frustrating over a couple of days. Using the utility V 1.12.10.10 and Beta K3fw4r60. I think I found a "Feature". When the Utility program starts, with port selected it reported that the program is waiting for K3 to respond. If you click OK it then reports that k3 is not responding. If you immediately switch to the firmware window and start the download all files button within the 3 or 4 seconds before the utility reports that the K3 is not responding then it starts loading the firmware and all is well. If you wait until the few second window is up then the download button greys out and the utility continually looks for the K3 without finding it. All is well now, with the latest Utility and Beta working well. By the way the new CW decode design appears to work VERY well. Howard at support suggested that the most recent compilation may have a slightly different communications timing and might be unique to XP machines. This is not necessarily proven and may be in work. [Elecraft] KX3 single lever key
Is anyone contemplating a single lever key for the KXPD3 mounting? Perhaps a firmware option with dots on one side and dashes on the other side with no iambic action would work. The logic would ignore opposite side closure until after release of the first closure. I believe this would function almost exactly the same as my single lever Vibroplex plugged in to the key jack. I am an old style extra with poor keying dexterity. I just about completely lost my sending capability trying for several years to learn to use Iambic keying. I am slowly regaining sending capability with the single lever key. This works better for me than the J38. What do others who feel iambic challenged think? Re: [Elecraft] P3 Feature Request
I usually do not like "me too" posts, but: I *_really_* like the idea of showing a high contrast line on the P3 with the absolute frequency the K3 will transmit on. No exceptions, it must include split, QSK, XIT, CW, SSB, REV, etc. This line could have menu options to be suppressed if the VOX is off or if the operator really does not want the feature. I believe the existing displays on the K3 or on the P3 are could be improved toward idiot proof for split and me. The feature could go a long way toward reducing inadvertent lid transmissions. [Elecraft] Elecraft K3: Progression of K3
Prehistory: I had built a number of other kits dating back to the Heath/Knight Kit days, including some of the smaller Elecraft kits. Also had an Orion. I built a K2. Was very pleased with it. Chose it because of the technical and customer support reputations of of the Elecraft founders. Expected excellent support if needed and received it. The add-on kits grew to where the K2-100 with tuner replaced every other rig at my station. Year 0:2007 Saw a description of the K3 and realized that here was a rig that might quell my early adopter itch for a long time. I ordered it at the first opportunity and had no fear about helping the company finance the final development with my down payment. They were up front with the delivery plan. I believed that this would be a very good rig based on the prior performance of the Elecraft principals and other company products. Lo and behold my K3 was shipped on the last day of 2007. Year 1:2008 Received K3 #125 and put it on the air. As soon as firmware improvements were suggested, they were incorporated, tested and distributed within a 2 or 3 weeks. A priority list was used, so that the most important mods were concentrated in the next release. I had to make a simple download and I had it installed. Man was I surprised! It turned out that I had the best performing radio in the world sitting right on the desk at KH7T. I had expected very good, but best in the World!!! Sherwood Engineering and ARRL Labs agreed after a bit of discussion. Every few months I had the benefit of a next generation radio with firmware updates and a few small hardware upgrades. The radio was Tailored to my taste. I learned that I had to keep up the learning curve to use this magnificent piece of hardware most effectively. Year 2:2009 The K3 had matured at a fantastic rate. No need to buy a new version radio or ship the radio from Hawaii to Aptos to get the latest features although the factory did send me a new board for exchange with the one I had for a nominal charge so that my radio would be fully up to date with the latest production radios. The K3 still retains ranking as the best performing radio in the world. many of the big gun DXers are trying it out and often updating their stations with K3 or making plans to as soon as possible. Some of the big three ham radio producers released very expensive new radios which, I believe, were intended to be K3 killers. Nice radios but not out performing the K3. They are very pretty if you have the money and a sufficiently reinforced desk top. Year 3:2010 I still have a top ranked, world class radio. Of course, I have had to improve my operating techniques quite a bit to keep up with the radio. I have been using a low cost pan-adapter most of this year and have an Elecraft P3 on order. Toward the end of the year a couple of radios were announced that could make one think about choosing the K3 vs the newly announced radio. It seems to me the K3 still wins the cost trade-off and holds it's head high in the performance competition. Year 4:2011 first quarter I still love my K3/P3. There is a radio out there that some people might prefer. I do not feel that I can improve my station or get better factory support at any price. I am looking forward to the hinted accessories to the P3 pan-adapter, along with the proven customer service and continuing upgrades of the K3 system. Re: [Elecraft] 2.7 vs 2.8 Defense of 2.7
In defense of 2.7 five pole filter as a preferred choice please note that when comparing the filter attenuation curves, the 2.7 skirt has far better attenuation out a ways on the the slope. The 2.8 in that region has lots of responses in that region. Yes I know that Elecraft says that the DSP will handle every thing more than 30 DB down, and I believe them, but I feel more comfortable with the 2.7 vs the 2.8. So my opinion is also to keep the 2.7 and spend the extra money on a 2.1 or 1.8 or 500 Hz filter. Then press the Check Versions Now button. I did not proceed to the Send All Firmware to K3 button as I already had updated my K3 from the beta site. I have not had problems downloading from the site or to the K3. However I do respect the advice to not do anything else in the background while doing the K3 update. I have used 2 different USB adapters including one from Radio Shack without problems both on my HP multimedia XP SP3 home computer and on an older Averatec laptop. I also frequently use a multi port Serial I/O card in direct connection the the K3 without problems on the home computer. Version 3.63 with K3 100W and Steppir DB 36 made 550 contacts, 75 of 80 sections, in 17 hours of operating from Hawaii on 15, 20, and 40 meters in the last weekend phone sweepstakes. Re: [Elecraft] OT Tuner Basics
Many of the questions about use of extra tuners with an ATU are answered by a review of the fundamental assumptions for the design of simple (cheap) power and swr meters. Most common tuners assume that the input to the tuner is 50 ohms. The SWR calibration is based on the ratio of reflected to forward power. If the input impedance is not 50 ohms then calculation of power is not accurate because the meters are not smart enough to measure actual power based on the true input impedance. They indicate power based on a voltage or current measurement. The real power will vary if the input impedance changes. When two tuners are used in series, such as the K3 ATU to an MFJ* to an amplifier, the impedance at the output of the ATU and the input to the MFJ is rarely 50 ohms. Only if the amplifier input is 50 ohms resistive and the MFJ is bypassed, then the SWR indicated by the MFJ might be close to 1 to 1 after the ATU is tuned. However, if the amplifier input impedance is perhaps 100 ohms, then the ATU will match the 100 ohms and the MFJ measurements will be referenced to the 100 ohms. The SWR based on forward and reflected power indicated by the MFJ will not be accurate. The forward power indicated by the MFJ may show twice the real input power when the input termination is 100 ohms. Power = (V squared)/R. As you can see the indicated power changes as the resistance changes. The real power is not changed, just the reference has changed and is not accounted for. So, do not waste time reading the power at the output of an ATU unless you know that the load is 50 ohms. Bypass the ATU and use the MFJ and you may get a reasonable indication on the MFJ when the transmitter output impedance is 50 ohms. Or delete the MFJ and use the ATU indicators. Now if you have a true power measuring watt meter that actually calculates current times voltage without using the input impedance as a reference then these measurements might be of some interest. * MFJ is used here to represent the most commonly available SWR meters using forward and reverse power indicators that assume a 50 ohm input impedance including the common Bird and others. I did not get into the additional errors introduced when the reference is a complex impedance and not just a simple resistance. True power is based only of the resistive part of the impedance. So again the error is compounded with the simple P=(I squared) times R approach Aloha, John KH7T W7BRS wrote: > Elecrafters, > > I know this is off-topic, but the range of ham-smarts on this list is > pretty good so I'll throw the question here and hopefully get some of that > ham-smarts too. > > OK -- K3/100 with KAT3 is the rig. > > I have it connected through a tuner and then to the SB-200 and then Dipole > > K3/100/ATU <-> MFJ tuner <-> SB200 <-> Dipole > > If I use Auto mode on the KAT3, put the MFJ tuner in Bypass and hold TUNE > then the KAT3 goes and brings the SWR (according to the display) to a > favorable value (1.0 to 1.2). [Elecraft] Transmit when switching from DATA to AM mode?
I confirmed on K3 #125 with V 2.76, the behavior described by KB8AP below. I also noted that the power supply jumps up to the level expected for the power setting. So I believe that it is attempting to transmit during the second or so of the transient. This is not a good thing. I do not have a 6 kHz filter installed. John KH7T Hi all, I've just discovered something odd with my K3 (#1772). When I switch mode from DATA to AM via the front panel Mode button, the rig tries to transmit. The red TX light comes on momentarily and I get a ERR TXF message (if in band) or an END message (if out of band) in the VFO B area. I don't have the AM filter installed, so I don't think anything is actually going out over the air, but it doesn't seem like the rig should ever go into transmit on a mere mode change. It ONLY happens when going from DATA to AM, not when going from FM to AM or between any other modes in either direction. There is no mic connected to the rig, nor anything connected to the rear panel mic or line inputs. The only things connected to the rig are a paddle, an external speaker, and the antenna. It happens whether in VOX or PTT mode. I first noticed it with MCU 2.67 (although I can't say if it happened with earlier versions.) I've updated to the 2.76 beta release and it still happens. [Elecraft] K3 Large tuning knob for VFO B
I have installed a standard main tuning knob on VFO B for the second receiver on my K3. The grand purpose of this is to get an equal feel for VFO A and B for tuning the second receiver. It works well for this purpose. The front panel symmetry does not look as nice to me as with the original small knob. It covers the Text Dec and B lettering but does not interfere with any controls. It hangs about 1/4 inch below the panel but clears the table by 1/4 inch with the tilt bail closed. I think I will get used to the appearance. Re: [Elecraft]K3 Open Pot on 52.450 mhz
I confirm this on S/N 125 FW version 2.63 DATA mode on 52.445.81. The K3 is very microphonic at that frequency in Data mode. The frequency changes with SHIFT and with MODE and crystal filter XFIL selection. With 1.8k filter the tone is found at 52.447.66 at a lower level and the microphonic effect is less. With the 500Hz filter the tone is heard at 52.446.75. Just a little microphonic with the narrow filter. The frequency jumps appear to be related to the filter frequency offset setting. For me this is not an issue as long as it does not show up elsewhere, but the tone could be important for some transverter users. Oh my! Did we finally find something to complain about or will Wayne and Lyle make it go away as usual? I certainly hope this will not become a distraction from the existing to do list. When I would click on a spot that was in the same band that the K3 was currently set to, the frequency change was made fairly quickly. But when I clicked on a spot that called for a band change, I noticed that the mode would often change first (on the K3’s existing frequency) then a 1-2 second delay before the rig changed to the newly spotted band. To top it off, the resulting mode was often incorrect on the K3 after making the change to the new spot. I could find no specific pattern to the mode changes. snip ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] ATU vs. External Tuner
Frank, Since the dipole is in the attic, you are probably not getting perfect swr without a tuner. The antenna is a compromise unless you have a very large attic with little metal near by. If you have trimmed it for resonance at 40 meters I assume it is quite a bit shorter than a standard dipole due the proximity of the roof and wood work. If the dipole is actually resonant at 40 meters then it will work poorly on 20 meters even if you can match it at the radio with some combination of feedline and tuner. Please note that a perfect dipole up high in the clear will not be 1 to 1 swr at resonance but will be 70 to 90 ohms. Do not fall into the trap of trying to obtain a perfect match on every band. I would try a non resonant length (g5rv style) fed with coax. It will be more effective on multiple bands and the SWR will not be too high to tune as it is on the second harmonic with a resonant dipole. The antenna center impedance of the g5rv lengths (102' or 88' if in the clear) avoids extreme high impedances on several of the HF bands. The coax losses should be be acceptable on most bands. I would certainly try that with the K3 tuner If you have carefully trimmed the 40 meter for resonance in place in the attic, try adding about 25% length and if necessary folding the ends to fit. There is nothing wrong with trying fan dipoles if you have the space and can trim appropriately. I am sure others will correct my ball park numbers. I also would not get carried away about the perfect feedline length for feeding a g5rv. The best feed line is the shortest one that goes from the antenna to the tuner. That said, if the coax line is very long, then a remote tuner is nice. The K3 tuner is excellent. I would use it . If you fall into a good automatic remote tuner use that. But consider the fact that resonant antennas to not necessarily radiate better than properly tuned non resonant lengths. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Initial Configuration?
Hi James, The basic K3 with no options is a fantastic value. You will save a couple hundred dollars by assembling it your self. No electronic assembly, just a lot of screws. The mantra is read the assembly manual, and follow the manual exactly. Elecraft manuals are far better than others I have encountered including Heathkit. Count on spending at least 9 hours on the assembly and setup. Even near total klutzes have succeeded. Again, follow each step exactly to avoid problems. Options are easy to add later but may consume some time with quite a few screws. Unless you are into QRP on SSB you will want the 100 watt unit. SSB QRP is really on my too hard pile. With 100 watts and patience, I can usually break the dx station pile-ups. The Second Receiver in not needed unless you are into dx pileups and really want to tune a second receiver to hear where the off frequency station is transmitting. You can do this using the a/b or REV button on the single receiver although it is a bit more work. I have the second receiver and perhaps would not have ordered it if I had played with LP-PAN and the computer first. I did install the module with the IF port so I could have a interface to the IF for the LP-Pan and a separate RX antenna. Check it out. There is also at least one cheap (20 or $30) DSP radio kit that can support the available free software for panadapter use with a computer and a good sound card. The LP pan has internal filter and HI Z buffer included that might need to be added for best performance of the low end unit. You definitely do not need additional roofing filters beyond the stock filter. Remember that the dsp sets the actual bandwidth with greater than 100 db dynamic range inside the roofing filter. They are easy to add later if you decide you want one or more. If you can squeeze it into the budget and intend to use a variety of antennas you will want the excellent internal antenna tuner. If you have an external tuner already you can use that for now. So that is it. Basic K3-100 with optional tuner. Basic K3-100 performance beats just about everything on the market. As a matter of fact, I do not know anything that outperforms the receiver. And the compression in the transmitter helps the 100 watts sound bigger without distortion when adjusted properly. Make sure you have a usable microphone, Elecraft provides capability to interface with a variety of microphones, both biased and dynamic, with excellent results. If you have something to try, do not buy another one yet. The internal monitor (using Headphones) allows you to adjust the transmit chain in test mode until it sounds right before going on the air. I use an inexpensive headset most of the time. The VOX is so smooth that I am not tempted to use a separate ptt switch. You will want to plug in a stereo speaker set to get the benefit of the AFX effects capability. Again not necessary immediately. You will want a computer preferably PC with a serial output to connect to the K3 for firmware updates. If your computer has USB and no RS-232 output ports you will need the USB to RS-232 adapter. I suggest getting the one they sell. Not all are created equal. There is also an update program available for the Apple OS-X. I was unsuccessful using it on a friend's very old apple with an early version of OS-X. I was told that Apple had said that this computer was obsolete and could not be updated to current OS-X versions. The Serial port performs very well with a variety of computer logging programs and LP-Pan I mentioned before. If you do not have a suitable computer find a friend who will assist you in updating the K3 firmware. It is great now but continues to improve rapidly. Update as soon as you get it assembled far enough to do so and you will avoid older version issues that have already been fixed. I hope this helps. I have had my K3 for 10 months now and end up smiling every time I use it. No other radio in my 50+ years of ham radio has had that effect. There is also no other radio that I recommend to serious new hams if they can bite the bullet for a one time investment. If you order, no charge is made until shipping time. That said, antennas are even more important than the perfect radio. The two together are awesome even in our current no sunspot condition. The perfect radio does very little without decent antenna. [Elecraft] Wow, Here is an example of why Elecraft is leading the pack.
I have connected a Steppir antenna to my K3. The Steppir frequency and band tracking of the K3 works fine when I am using my logging program. It also works fine after I send an AI1; command to the K3 using the K3 utility. I can then shut off the computer. But when the power is cycled on the K3, the K3 turns off the broadcast status command. So I would have to boot the computer and resend the AI1; command to get the Steppir to track the K3 without the logging program running. So to get the AI command to not reset during a power cycle, at 12:44 PM today I sent a request to Elecraft support, along with my rationale. At 1:25 PM today I received a note from Gary Surrency that said he forwarded it to Wayne for his consideration. At 1:29 PM I received a note from Wayne that he just added it to his short list. At 7:29 PM Wayne sent the following email: "John, I just made the AI parameter "sticky" so you won't have to do it on each power-up. You'll have to set it one time; this can be done using the "Command Tester" screen in K3 Utility. The changes will appear in revision 1.57 (or later), which isn't yet released. The parts fit and precision of sheet metal and brackets was beautiful. There was no bending to fit. When you laid the parts together the screws invariably fit into the center of the holes. I spent some extra time during inventory because the screws were not always in the packages defined. But they were all there, once all the packages were opened and counted. Even the two I lost later by flipping a container off the table, sweeping the floor and recounting, had been there during the initial inventory. By the way, about a week after Dremel cutting two new screws to fit from longer ones I had in the junk box, I noticed that my surplus box had the two missing screws in it. I think I found them on the other side of the room. It was useful to upgrade to the latest available firmware as soon as possible once the radio was running and before completing calibration. This was the first time in my 50+ years in ham radio that I ever ordered a new product, sight unseen, within 2 or 3 days of the first showing, and knowing that less than 20 Beta units and no production units were "out there". My confidence in the Elecraft team was based on my experience with the K2 and other products from this amazing group. Since I have some experience with transitioning from development to preproduction to production I expected that my "late" order 1 day after the mass rush at Visalia might take some time to deliver. I greatly admire the commitment of the management to hold delivery until the quality of the units, the documentation, and the firmware, met their high standards in spite of the slings and arrows cast by some disappointed instant gratification seekers. This takes a form of courage on the part of the decision makers that is missing in too many companies. I expected the Elecraft team to provide a superior product, with some positive technical surprises, and to meet their technical goals of providing performance meeting or exceeding the competition. I have not been disappointed. I am still exploring the features of this radio and it just gets better with each firmware update. I have had for several years one of the competing top of the line radios. The Orion radio offers possibly the best receiver previously available to hams in some of the critical specifications related to digging our weak signals from very strong adjacent signals in a crowded contest or dx pileup. It took several months and many firmware updates for me to be able to make good use of that radio's capabilities. I am still waiting for firmware updates to fix some obvious issues that I can work around. Two days after finishing the K3, I did an A/B test with the other radio on some very weak signals. There was no question that the K3 was able to dig out a weak ssb signal as well as the Orion. I could not say that the K3 was better, but I feel it was at least as good. And I was just beginning to explore the K3. I was skilled with the other radio and just learning the K3. It appears that the K3 firmware is well structured and that features are being fixed and added without losing the handle on other firmware components. I strongly recommend quickly moving to the latest K3 update to get new features. In addition to the superb performance, I really like the sound of the K3, the front and rear microphone/headset selection and setups, the monitor test mode so I can optimize settings off the air, and the intuitive feel of both the controls and the menus. Here are the few things that I am missing or have found room for improvement. I really miss not having the second receiver and the ability to scan nearby frequencies. I am on the list to get the second receiver very soon now and I may have to make a SoftRock panadapter to satisfy my use of features that have become second nature. Of course the promised Elecraft panadapter will solve that problem, but now that I have the K3, I want it all now. OOPs! I think I just downgraded my image of patience. I was able to use the K3 smoothly with Dx4win and with the Steppir beam. However, initially I was unable to get the K3 to communicate with the Steppir without running the computer and Dx4win. I found I can run the K3 command AI1; and then the Steppir reads the K3 information and behaves normally even if the computer is turned off. But I have not figured out how to make the K3 retain the AI1 broadcast mode through a power cycle. The feature may be available and I just have not discovered it yet or it may be a subject for a future firmware feature request. I note tha

[Elecraft] Re: Solvent -- Better way
The discussion on solvents is entertaining. But the first, second, and third rule on Elecraft Kits is FOLLOW THE BOOK and get wonderful results. The forth rule is do not use solvents or you void the warranty and have to live with the result. A better way is to wait a few days until any excess unsightly flux is setup and easily flakes off if you lightly use a small screwdriver or a dental pick. It usually pops off clean. If it does not pop off clean wait a while longer. It is not really good in the long term to leave large amounts of excess flux bridging connections. In several years it can create a leakage path with absorbed water and contaminants. It is a really good idea to refrain from using solvents that may affect some of the plastic parts or run a thin coating of dissolved flux or other contaminants into unlikely places on the board or even inside some of the parts. Perhaps my credibility is shot since I used to occasionally wash my hands with TCE. Re: [Elecraft] Gamma Research Very Small Switching Power Supply
My test data indicates that my K2 / 100 is happy with the Gamma power supply. The K2/100 is specified to run ok down to 11 volts. The K2 is more tolerant than many rigs when run at supply voltages down to 12 volts minus line drop. As I stated, the Gamma does run 100 watt cw with the K2/100. The Gamma specifications will not support long Key Down at 100 watts. I have not run sufficient testing to see how conservative the Gamma 5 amp steady state, or 22 amp 25% duty cycle is. In my operation, even at 100 watt, cw my average periods of transmission tend to fit in the specified limits of this supply. I believe that about 85 watt CW fits within the specification of this power supply. Karl, you bring up the subject of heavy compression. If your compression is to effectively limit voice peaks so you can have higher average speech the average current will increase. The compression should be adjusted so that background noise is not driving the amplifier. If so adjusted, I suspect that the average power will still be less than CW. Since the Supply can handle the peak currents easily, the main question is the true average power over a longer time. Uncompressed SSB is about 20% and CW is about 40% per the RF Safety table. It has been my experience that heavily compressed SSB is much less intelligible than moderate compression even though the S meter moves higher. In all of my experiments with compression I have ended up using much less than I initially thought would be useful. Digression aside, I am happy with my Gamma Research power supply for portable use with my KPA/100. Aloha, John KH7T Karl Larsen wrote: Hi John, I bet the company will not provide the tests you give us here. I summarize your work as proving this power supply is properly specified by the maker and when you draw high current at 12 VDC the voltage goes down. For the low duty cycle of SSB at 100 Watts it will work fine. For the higher duty cycle of CW you can't run 100 Watts. I run serious compression on my 100 Watt rig and the duty cycle on SSB is much higher. I wonder if that will work with this supply. The power supply has no RF noise output so that is a sure plus. Re: [Elecraft] Gamma Research Very Small Switching Power Supply
The voltage on my meter is 13.65 with no load. With K2/100 set for 50 watts out the voltage drops to 13.3 with a string of 15 wpm dashes. At 75 watts it drops to 12.75 volts. At 100 watts it drops to 12.2 volts. Due to the large capacitance, it takes several seconds to drop to the levels measured. The voltage is slightly higher, I do have a fuse in series between the measurement point and the PS. I do not recommend solid straight Key down for several seconds. I have not tested it this way. The power supply would probably fold back at some point. This small amount of testing did not seem to heat the supply much. The fan noise is much quieter than the computer under the desk. I could not hear it at first. The K2 does not seem to mind. I would recommend a different PS if you want 100 Watt plus CW for extended periods. If you want to run 100 watt ssb or 75 watts or so of cw and you want a small, quiet alternative to a battery then this seems to be a good choice. It is basically a 35 watt commercial supply module with the addition of the very large output capacitors. It is recommended for a max of 35 watts continuous like RTTY, AM, FM modes It is rated for 5 amps continuous or 22 Amps @ 25% duty cycle from the HPS-1a data sheet. Perfect for 100 watt SSB and use good judgment for cw. It is more compatible with my k2/100 than with the Orion. The Orion does not like it at 100 watts CW. 50 watts seems ok These are all the answers I know. Re:[Elecraft] Gamma Research Very Small Switching Power Supply
I have had one of these supplies for several months. It works as advertised and easily supports my rigs on 100W SSB and cw. The advertising does say no radio noise and I have found none. It has modern 25 Farad super capacitors in series for a 5 Farad output capacitance. It is a perfect companion for my K2/100 dual box setup. The fact that it is only 1.25 pounds with cable and so small opens up lots of portable uses. The input is 85 to 240 volts AC. It is 3.37 X 1.55 X 5.25 inches, rated at 13.8 VDC, 22 amps at 25% duty cycle and 5 amps continuous, and weighing only 1.25 lbs. Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 advice
I do believe that Don's rationale quoted below is well considered. I did it without first installing the KPA100 in the K2. Absolutely no problems. There were not any strange problems with putting it in the separate enclosure. There may be advantages to using the external amp box to reduce heating and vfo drift in the K2. I used the factory KIO2 I/O module in the K2 and added the non inductive termination resistor suggested to reduce the potential for instability if longer line between the K2 and the KPA box is used. I do not recommend trying to avoid using the standard KIO2 for the interface. The only real merit I can see to putting it in the K2 first is that you would know you can use it there if you ever want to. I do not think that is worth the risk to a successful K2 with KIO2, battery and tuner installed. Your mileage may vary. HI The only special connection is the DB connector cable for amplifier to K2 to computer. I wired the spare BNC on the Amp module for the amplifier input from the K2 so I just have a double ended BNC jumper cable from the K2 to the Amp. Then there is a short PL259 jumper from the amp output to the tuner input. I also modified the KPA 100 speaker connection so that I can plug audio into the speaker connector to drive that speaker. There is a location where simply jumpering 2 adjacent traces shorts out the speaker disconnect switch. This is of course optional and should not be done if you intend to put the amp in the K2. I have to admit that if I were not a fan of having the separate portable 10 watt K2 with battery and built in tuner, then using the KPA100 in the K2 box with the smaller external tuner box does make sense. Aloha, John KH7T I am just at the end stages of KPA100 build. I intend to mount in an accessory cabinet along with the antenna tuner. This is not exactly addressed by instructions by Elecraft but is covered on a web page that I have downloaded. My question is whether I should mount the KPA100 in the K2 first, then transfer after testing? Or would this be waste of time? Thanks, John AB8WH John, Two reasons for mounting it on the K2 first: 1) You will be following the instructions as written in the manual - it is just easier that way rather than trying to interpret the effects of working two sets of instructions at once. 2) When you have finished the testing, you will know that the KPA100 functions properly when connected directly to the K2, so if you have problems when it is moved to the external enclosure, you will know that the KPA100 is likely not the cause of the probelm. As an added third reason - the mounting of the KPA100 in an external enclosure is not directly supported by Elecraft (they do not discourage it either). If you feel confident that you can analyze and troubleshoot whatever strange problems may arise by mounting it in the external enclosure, then by all means do it that way - but then if you had that kind of confidence, you likely would not have had to ask the question. Step by step, one step at a time, is usually the best way to reach the goal - leaps and bounds can cause you to falter and fall. 73, Don W3FPR ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
