[Elecraft] OT: Troubleshooting LD player...

2005-12-08 Thread John Clifford
I know, this is about as far from a K2 as one can get, but you guys are the
only people I know who understand electronics.

I'm trying to diagnose and fix a Sony laserdisc player (the old analog 12"
babies) that I've owned since new. The player worked fine until I didn't use
it for a couple of years after I got Dish TV and a DVD player. The player
will not provide a good picture but instead there is 'jitter' as if the
vertical sync needs to be adjusted on the TV set.

>From what I know of LD players, the laser pickup retrieves an analog signal
that represents a complete picture scan/frame. The CAV LD format has one
frame per track so getting a still image means just keeping the head on the
same track and letting it read the same frame over and over. There is a
servo circuit that controls the head position, and it looks like the head
position is controlled by voltage instead of discrete 'steps' using a
stepper motor.

This brand of LD player had a reputation for developing such problems due to
electrolytic capacitor failure, and that seems like what the problem is
here. I'm wondering if a bad cap is letting a voltage vary sufficiently to
allow the head to wander because I can't even get a good still picture and I
can hear the head moving ever-so-slightly when the signal is bad (it is
quiet during the few moments the picture is good). Or, if there is a cap to
damp voltage swings that has gone bad.

I've got the service manual and I've done a preliminary voltage check on the
power supply and things look to be where they're supposed to be... so the
problem has to be downstream. My next step is to try and look at the voltage
coming from the head positioning motor on back to whatever controls it and
see if something is bouncing around when it shouldn't be. I'm hoping that I
can just tack-solder a discrete component across any surface-mount caps that
might be bad and make the problem go away. It doesn't have to look pretty,
it just has to work.

I'm open to any troubleshooting ideas, and have the service manual in PDF
format if anyone would like to look at it. I don't have the special service
circuit boards or the service disc... but, hey, NASA went to the moon with
less, didn't they? I do have a 100 Mhz scope and a good digital meter, and
of course my trusty soldering iron, and thank goodness this thing has a lot
of discrete components.

Why am I posting here? Because building a K2 and fixing other radios has
given me just enough electronics knowledge to be dangerous. It's all Eric
and Wayne's fault!!

RE: [Elecraft] 12v 0.8Ah gel cells...

2004-08-30 Thread John Clifford
The connector is referred to as a 'Mate-N-Lok'. I believe it is the same
connector that Elecraft uses to plug in the 12v gel cell into the K2's
motherboard.

Some people buy a female (receptacle) Mate-N-Lok (from Mouser, etc., use the
name as a search term on Mouser's website) and make an adapter to Anderson
Powerpoles, a barrel connector, etc., depending on their application.
Others cut the connector off the battery and put their own connector on it.
It's up to you.

I know that one of these cells will fit inside a K1. Has anyone tried to
see if it will fit inside a KX1? I also use 'em with my HTs since they are
a LOT cheaper than AA NiMH cells and easier to recharge in the field (just
plug them into a 12v auto cigarette lighter receptacle -- they can't be
overcharged on 13.8 VDC). Two of them fit inside a cheap digital camera
case, and it's easy to have a spare pair charging while I use a pair.

Like I said, I've got about 40 left so if anyone wants some let me know
ASAP.

[Elecraft] Gel cell redux...

2004-08-23 Thread John Clifford
Sorry about the bandwidth...

I just talked to PayPal customer service. They are fixing the problem and
everything should be good to go in a couple of hours (they are re-routing
the email address to my verified account).

RE: [Elecraft] FS: K1 and KX1 owners! Yuasa NPO.8-12 12v 0.8Ah gel cells available CHEAP!

2004-08-23 Thread John Clifford
I have two PayPal accounts... One is a personal account ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
and one is a business account ('[EMAIL PROTECTED]'). Either will reach
me. You'll note that the ARRL address forwards to the Netcom account.

This was my mistake... I wanted to give everyone my callsign so they could
do a callsign lookup and know I was legit... but I just ended up confusing
people.

Sorry about the confusion. If you want to use the Verified account OR if
you want to pay via credit card, use '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'. Otherwise,
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' will work with PayPal account balance transfers. I will
refund these payments.

Try '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'... I know that works. The ARRL alias should
have worked too... I'll fix it.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] FS: K1 and KX1 owners! Yuasa NPO.8-12 12v 0.8Ah gel cells available CHEAP!

2004-08-23 Thread John Clifford
Greetings fellow Elecrafters,

Somehow I have ended up with a bunch of brand-new Yuasa 12v
0.8 amp-hour gel cells (well, I got them at a GOOD price).
Each battery is about the size of a pack of playing cards and
weighs just over 11 oz. They are approximately 3-3/4" wide x
2-3/8" high x 1" deep, with a 3/8" overhand on one side for
the connector wire (red and black wires that end in a
'Mate-n-Lok' plug similar to, if not identical to, that used
to plug in the K2's optional internal battery).

I use these as portable power packs for my HTs (I run two in
parallel), by replacing the plug with Anderson Powerpole
connectors (I have a Powerpole to circular plug adapter made
up for my HTs). Why do I like these over AA battery packs?
They're cheap, they're rugged, it's hard to lose one battery
(and thus you can't get full voltage), and they're easy to
charge... just hook 'em up to your cigarette lighter outlet
in your car, a cheap 12v solar panel, or to your shack's 12v
(13.8v) power supply. Of course, you can use any battery
charger designed for 12v gel cells with them also.

They would make GREAT batteries for the KX1 and K1 units, and
of course they'll work with the K2 also. They also work
great as power packs for any HT or portable QRP rig that can
run off of 12v, or do what I've done and put a few diodes in
line to step down the voltage to work with units like the
Icom T90A. A clever ham (redundant term) should be able to
do lots of creative things with these batteries (make power
packs for PDAs, cell phones, GPSs, etc.).

I have around 140 give or take, and they're first-come, first
served. When I run out, I'll post back on the reflector and
I'll refund any payments that I can't ship to (I'm a verified
PayPal'er, with more than 100 satisfied customers, and you
can get my home address via my callsign). I guarantee these
batteries will work, hold a charge, and are BRAND-NEW and
unused, or I'll refund your money.

These list for $16.95 each at Mouser Electronics (the
Power-Sonic brand equivalent). I'm selling them for $6 each
(that's almost $11 LOWER than Mouser's price), or $10 for two
($5 each, $12 less than Mouser's price), plus $4 shipping
(for one OR two batteries) to your continental US address via
USPS Priority Mail. You can pay me via PayPal at kd7kgx at
arrl.net, and I'll ship within 24 hours of receiving your payment.

Thanks for your time and 73,
