[Elecraft] Headphones (Again!)
I recently purchased a Bose QC-45. I used it for about 5 minutes in a CWops contest, and got RF in the left headphone. I disconnected it, and returned to my Bose QC-35's. The QC-45's have been returned to Amazon. I had a similar problem earlier in the year with the Bose 700 headphones. I tried various toroids, but never could isolate them from RF (particularly a problem on 40m). Obviously, this is is not something Bose is concerned with. Fortunately, the QC-35 gamer headphones work well. With all three headphones, I used the headphone cable (not Bluetooth -> delay problem). FWIW, I like the Bose noise cancelling because it does a good job attenuating KPA1500 fan noise. Has anyone used the Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones? How do they work in an RF environment? - 73, John, N0TA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] [K3] RTTY Questions
I have two K3 questions: 1. In Data MD, AFSk A, you can set the baud rate to either 45 or 75. Is the baud rate just for the RTTY reader? Does it affect anything else? 2. With my K3s power set to 100w, RTTY starts at a little below 50w and and then fairly slowly builds to 100w (measured on an external wattmeter). I've done a TX calibration -- no change. What is going on? [Elecraft] [K3] Elecraft Support?
Last December, I posted a message concerning whether Elecraft is still supporting the K3. My K3s developed a problem with its 100w amplifier. Wayne quickly responded and confirmed Elecraft still supports the K3 100%. A few days later, Doug from Customer Support contacted me. Doug told me they have a K3 amplifier replacement program: you send them your amp and $100, and they send you a refurb'ed amp, built to the latest specs. He advised to expect a little delay due to the amp technician coming down with Covid. I promptly sent them my amp. So, now they have had my amp (and $100) for three months, and I haven't heard a thing. I've requested status -- NOTHING! Definitely NOT the customer service I expect from Elecraft. - John, N0TA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Update: The day after I posted on this reflector, I got a call from Doug, Elecraft Customer Support. He introduced me to the Amplifier swap program, which I'll probably take advantage of. Re: [Elecraft] Seeking comments on Ham Expo from participants
I thought an overall problem was you couldn't enter a presentation until the exact time it started. I think they should have a "buffer" time, say 5 minutes, where you can enter and wait for the presentation to begin. Second, I didn't care for how the questions were presented. At all of the presentations, the questions managers started at the top, and worked their way through all of the questions, one by one. In a lot of cases the questions were duplicates and had already been answered. It would be nice if after the presentation, someone would go through the remaining questions and try to answer them, and post the results. Maybe 30 minutes is too short for questions about popular topics (like the K4). - 73, John, N0TA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] [K3] RTTY Setup: Solutions
Here are the solutions to my questions: 1. FSK/AFSK Mode - The solution was to set the RTTY mode in N1MM to AFSK 2. Intermittent failure to go to receive after transmit: There are at least three ways to setup the K3 and N1MM for RTTY AFSK PTT: a. Use Serial RTS for PTT b. Use "PTT via Radio Command Digital Mode" c. Use VOX Note that you cannot use more than one of these at a time. FWIW, my RTTY N1MM macros do have {RX} at the end of each line. The first two did not solve my problem -- I still failed to return to RX about a third of the time; however, VOX appears to have fixed the problem. I wish I knew why the first two don't work. This is probably applicable to WSJTx PTT, too. [Elecraft] [K3] RTTY Setup
I've recently changed from FSK to AFSK, and having issues. FWIW, I am using N1MM with 2Tone as my RTTY interface, with the K3 internal sound card. First, When I go to DATA MD, it is always set to FSK D. I reset it to AFSK A and it works; however, if I change bands, it resets itself to FSK D. The AFSK A setting does not "stick" - is there a way to make the K3 remember this setting? Second, the K3 is staying in Transmit after the RTTY message is finished. I usually have to press the XMIT button to return to receive. I do not have anything setup in the 2Tone PTT box, which I suspect is the problem. I tried to use the serial DTR, but 2Tone was unable to use the serial port that N1MM was using. I also tried VOX, but did not see a difference. Any suggestions for setting up AFSK PTT? [Elecraft] KX2 RTTY Help
Trying to get RTTY running on my KX2, but no luck, so far. The KX2 is setup for WSJTx and works properly (TX and RX) with both straight audio cables to the computer and through a SignaLink USB. My conclusion from this is that the audio connections and audio gains must be set relatively close. Receive problems: I have both MMTTY & 2Tone (via N1MM) setup. In MMTTY, I see no receive trace on the spectrum scope, just a dot in the middle of the XY scope. In 2Tone, I have the familiar two humps, but they are in left sector of the display. Audio gain controls do not seem to effect the display, and I cannot find why the display is displaced. Transmit problem: Both MMTTY and 2Tone transmit; however I just get the carrier, not the Mark and Shift. This occurs with both the SignaLink and direct audio cables from the computer to the KX2. They both TX, so PTT is working. I have tried the above in both DATA A and AFSK A modes. Must be making silly mistake(s). Help! [Elecraft] [K3] 2 Tone FSK (RTTY)
Has anyone been able to get 2 Tone FSK to work with a K3? In my case, I use a W3YY optical encoder for FSK and PTT. FSK & PTT work fine with MMTTY, and PTT works with WSJT; however, when I setup FSK in 2 Tone, I get a brief (less than 1 second) RTTY tone, and that is all. I can see the entire message in the N1MM Digital interface, so I know the message has been generated. I am using serial RTS for PTT, and I can verify it is working by monitoring the voltage on serial Pin 7. When RTS is generated, I also see PTT activated (PTT is grounded, so voltage drops to zero). David, G3YYD, suggests NOT using FSK because the 2 Tone AFSK modes are superior (especially the differential mode, DOOK). These modes use VOX for PTT, and do work. I would like to get FSK working, too, so I can compare the RTTY transmit modes. [Elecraft] KX2 added to Sherwood's list
John, N0TA, forwarded this question to me about why I listed the KX2 close-in dynamic range at 3 kHz rather than the more typical 2 kHz. Some radios have limitations that make a measurement at 2-kHz impossible or invalid. If a valid measurement cannot be made at 2 kHz, then it is made at some wider spacing, such as 3, 4 or 5 kHz. Typically if a measurement cannot be made at 2 kHz, it is because of filter leakage. When a test is made at 2-KHz, for example, the third-order intermodulation products are 2-kHz below the lower frequency test tone and 2-kHz above the higher frequency test tone. If the radio cannot reject the test tone that is 2-kHz away, then it is impossible to measure the third-order distortion product. In the case of the KX2, I could measure the low side distortion product at 2 kHz with no problem using the standard 500-Hz filter bandwidth. On the other hand, when measuring the distortion product on the high side, the filter in the KX2 does not reject the test tone that is 2 kHz away. Two different KX2 radios were tested, and both showed this identical anomaly. If one reads the ARRL report on the KX2, you will see that the reviewer mentioned the filter leakage when tuned above a strong signal. Here are the odd details on the KX2 filter leakage. If the filter bandwidth is 500, 400, 300, 200 or 100 Hz, filter leakage makes the measurement at 2 kHz impossible. On the other hand, if the filter bandwidth is 550, 450, 350, 250, 150 or 50 Hz, then the measurement can be made. The League chose to publish a 2-kHz dynamic range in QST even though the measurement cannot be made on the high side with the standardized 500-Hz filter bandwidth (or any even bandwidth value). Note: Both the League and I only publish the LOWER of the two measurements. Let’s say the low side dynamic range of some radio is 95 dB and the high side is 90 dB. Both the League and I publish the lower worse-case 90 dB number. In the case of the KX2, I couldn’t pick the lower of the two readings since no measurement is possible when using the standard 500-Hz filter. Since the 2-kHz dynamic range value could not be made with the standard filter bandwidth at 2 kHz, but could be made at a 3-kHz signal spacing, I published that data. It may be of interest that the 2-kHz dynamic range number with the non-standard 450-Hz bandwidth was only 1 dB worse than the 3-kHz value. The point of listing the 3-kHz value, or any other radio with a non-2 kHz listing is to point out the radio has a limitation in its filter performance. My long form report on the KX2, available in PDF format, goes into detail about this issue, and has data on the two radios I tested, listed by serial number. At this point, Elecraft does not know why the KX2 behaves this way, or whether there is a possible firmware fix. When you press the ATU Tune button on the K3, it tunes whichever one it is configured for (and puts the KPA 500 in bypass). - 73, John, N0TA __ George Danner http://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=elecraft@mailman.qth.netq=from:%22George+Danner%22Thu, 07 Nov 2013 07:52:48 -0800 http://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=elecraft@mailman.qth.netq=date:20131107 Wonderful idea Arnie; especially if you want the 2nd tune. 73 George AI4VZ -- From: Arie Kleingeld PA3A p...@xs4all.nl It would be a nice feature that when I press the tune button on the KAT500, it would key the K3 at the same time and put theKPA500 in standby (if you have one). __ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [KAT500] Tuning
I don't think I understand how the tuning works with the KAT500. I have a K3, KPA500, and the two 15-pin cables (K3 to KAT, and KAT to KPA). I set my K3 Tune Power to 25w. I thought when I press tune on the K3, the KAT500 should tune, and it shouldn't key the Amp; however, when I do this, I continue to get around 500w from the Amp. Could someone please explain how this is supposed to work? [Elecraft] DSP Noise Reduction and contesting
Interesting point about about the DSP in the KX3. I was told at Dayton that the DSP in the KX3 was several generations newer than what we have in the K3. With the audio problems Elecraft has had on the board (additional daughter card) and the continued continued complaints about audio distortion (Sherwood), maybe they will redesign the card with the newest DSP generation and offer it to K3 owners as an upgrade. Of course, this would lead to some interesting DSP firmware distribution problems with different hardware platforms to support! - 73, John, N0TA [Elecraft] DSP Noise Reduction and contesting Johnny Siu Wed, 07 Nov 2012 07:59:57 -0800 Hello Tony, I concur with your observation. In SSB, the NR in Icom is far better. Among all the 8 x 4 = 32 choices in NR settings in K3, I am afraid that none of them is as good as that of NR of Icom in SSB. The success of the implementation of IF DSP will depend on: 1. the processing power of the DSP chip set; 2. the ability to write an efficent firmware to optimise the performance of the DSP chip set. Surprisingly, while I was told that the NR in KX3 was the same as that in K3, I feel the NR in KX3 sounds better and less artifact. I trust elecraft keeps on looking for ways to improve the NR performance. [Elecraft] [K3] Feature Request
If you activate Noise Reduction (NR) on a mode (like CW), NR is on for all modes on that band. Request NR to follow both mode and band. For example, if you have NR selected for 40m CW, and change to LSB, NR is OFF (unless previously activated for that mode). [Elecraft] [K3] K3 # 6548
I ordered a second K3 at Dayton. It arrived Friday (I requested delayed delivery). Its a fairly vanilla K3/100: KXV3, 400 Hz filter. I built and tested it on Saturday, and made first contacts Sunday morning. Several things worth noting: 1. The Assembly Manual (Rev L7) has been fined tuned. I noticed several changes from my previous build (2008) that really improved the build process. 2. The Parts List could be improved. It should list the parts in the individual bags (rather than a semi-composite list of all of the Zinc 1/4 4-40 screws). This is done in some cases, not others. 3. No missing parts! 4. Once I got the new K3 tested and configured, it works and performs EXACTLY like my older one (I have kept up with the mods on #994). I think this is truly remarkable!! I love my K3's!!! - 73, John, N0TA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: RTTY Question
I'm brand new to RTTY. I have MMTTY setup so it receives and transmits (AFSK) via VOX. I would like to do the NAQP/RTTY this weekend and use N1MM. How do I setup N1MM to key the K3? Would anyone be willing to share their N1MM RTTY macros? I'm not sure whether RTTY requires a special key sequences (or just John CO)? [Elecraft] [K3] K3 N1MM Problem
While doing Sweep Stakes this weekend, I ran into a K3/N1MM problem: When I interrupted a running CW message (like a CQ) with either an Escape or a keyboard entry, the K3 would stay in Transmit (Red TX led illuminated, no receiver).
