[Elecraft] K2 SSB audio - fuzzy around the edges

2009-02-18 Thread Joseph Szczubelek
I have a K2, mid 5000 serial number, mic input wired for Kenwood, 50 amp 12
volt Amidon power supply, with a KPA100 running 100 watts. I can easily switch
my HM-10 mic between transceivers using seperate audio cables for each radio to
perform on air testing. When using a Heil microphone HM-10 with dual element
(HC-4 or HC-5) with Heil shielded cable and mic plug wired for Kenwood and no
external pre-amp for the K2, audio setting SSBA is at 2, and compression
setting SSBC is at 2-1, and asking other hams for a critical audio report I am
being told that I sound a little fuzzy around the edges on the K2. I am using
an Amidon type #43 toroid with seven turns of mic cable just before the mic
input to the K2. Any extra Heil mic cable is coiled up as common mode choke
about 5 inches in diameter. The distortion might be a little more with the
wider HC-5 element. The HM-10 mic works fine and gets great audio reports on a
Yaesu FT-1000D - same antennae and same
power levels. Only when asking for an audio report does the "little
distortion" report come up. I have also applied the grounded K2 mic connector
mod.

Is this as good as it gets with the K2 audio ?

Am I asking for too much for Heil HM-10 with the K2 to sound like the Yaesu
FT-1000D ?

Does audio compression in the KSSB create a little distortion in the audio ?

Thanks

Joe - K9DMV

[Elecraft] Is this correct ???

2007-01-25 Thread Joseph Szczubelek

My K2 #5628 has the SSB option installed. Fine carrier
balanced completed. Many contacts made on SSB with the
K2 with good audio reports. No carrier can be heard
and audio sounds good.

The following settings were done: power set to minimum
- ccw, mic gain (SSBA) set to 3, speech compressor
level (SSBC) set to 3-1, frequency counter plugged
into TP2. While doing the SSB transmit BFO
optimization in CAL FIL BF1 (first filter) with BF1
set to OP1, I CAN HEAR my audio in my headphones "IF"
I key the microphone. If I move the BFO plus or minus
from suggested settings I can hear my audio
frequencies change. So I set it for the "best
sounding" which were very close to the recommended
settings.

The SSB adapter manual says that you must use an
external receiver or ask a nearby ham to make these
adjustments. I was able to this just by listening in
the headphones plugged into the K2. This method is NOT
mentioned in the manual. Can the SSB Transmit BFO
Optimization (page 22 SSB manual) be performed this
way or is my radio doing something unique??

[Elecraft] Need time and freq for Elecradt CW net

2006-12-19 Thread Joseph Szczubelek

I need the correct day, start time in GMT, and
frequencies for the 40 and 20 meter Elecraft net.

Reading the emails the frequencies appear to be 7045
and 14050 kc.

It appears that this is a Sunday nite activity for
North America. Does this net meet more than once a
week ?

Best,

[Elecraft] K2 #5628 is alive

2006-12-11 Thread Joseph Szczubelek

My K2 ser. # 5628 is alive. Over the past week I have
made several contacts on 80 meters. I have checked
into the regional 80 meter Texas Panhandle SSB net
several times using CW and received many FB reports.

On 80 meters I get 17+ watts out and on 10 meters I
get 12+ watts out. The receiver sounds good.

Will be starting the KSB2 shortly.

[Elecraft] K2 Problem 12 Watts Out With Power Control Fully CCW - solved

2006-12-05 Thread Joseph Szczubelek
With a few helpfull tips from Don Wilhelm - W3FPR I
was able to quickly resolve my K2 power output
problem.

The voltage measured at diode D9 cathode (marked end)
on the RF board was 2.30 volts DC. After R66 (2.7K) it
was 0.0 volts. The microprocessor was NOT getting the
RF output signal via VRFDET. The interal RF output
meter was not indicating any output power. During the
build I installed the RG174 coax at signal "RF" for
the K60XV Rework Eliminator. When soldering the braid
on the other end to L4 the center conductor shorted to
the braid grounding the signal from D9 - operator
error.

Correcting that problem I now get 10 watts out at 2.1
amps on 40 meters with the power control set to 10
watts. The power control changes the output power. The
internal RF output meter now displays output power
correctly.

I am now proceeding to complete the Part III test.

[Elecraft] K2 Problem 12 Watts Out With Power Control Fully CCW

2006-12-04 Thread Joseph Szczubelek
The build for K2 ser # 5628 has been going well until
I got to the "Alignment and Test Part III" 40 meter
transmitter alignment section.

Problem:

With current set to 2.0 AMPS and the power control
fully CCW I measured 7 watts on an external wattmeter.
The internal wattmeter had NO indication. When I press
the "tune" control with the display set for voltage
and current I see 13.3 volts and 1.88 amps. The
current will start to slowly rise at .02 amps per
second and will reach 2.00 amps in about 10 seconds
and the "HI CURRENT" message will appear with 7 watts
output.

If I set the power to .5 watts the current will start
out at 1.98 amps and the 2.00 amp threshold and "HI
CURRENT" message will appear much quicker - about 1
second. I still get 7 watts of output indicated on an
external wattmeter.

Setting the current to 3.00 amps and the power control
fully CCW I get 12 watts out with 13.0 volts and the
current starting at 2.84 amps creeping up at .02 amps
per second. At around 10 seconds the HI CURRENT
message will appear when 3.0 amps has been reached.

Setting the power to .5 watts will cause the same
thing to happen but HI CURRENT message appears quickly
with 12 watts output.

Additional Info:

The K2 has passed all checks up to this point. I am
using a Heathkit 50 ohm dummy load. Turning the power
control up or down gives the indication of the
desired power but has no effect. L1 and L2 gives a
nice peak for 40 meters. They were very close if not
right on from the 40 meter receiver test. Measuring
the resistance at the collectors of finals Q7 and Q8
shows 3.7K for both transistors. The power output is
being controlled by limiting the current not by the
power control. The internal wattmeter gives no
indication on transmit but works as an S meter on
receive. I am using a 30 amp Ashton switching supply.
It was Sunday evening so I called it a day.

Best,

Joe Szczubelek - K9DMV
