I am very saddened to report the death of my long time friend Frederick
Cady, KE7X. Many of you know Fred from his series of excellent manuals
written for Elecraft products. Fred passed away yesterday evening from
heart failure. He is survived by this wife Katie and daughter Elizabeth.

Adding $100 or more to add a touchscreen ui to a radio provides very little
value in my view, is silly. The radio cost to value ratio is very low (meaning
the value is high). The only exception I can see would be integrating the P3 as
an option (hopefully enhancing with a micro computer/ssd for logging, digital,
extended macros...etc, basically what I'm doing now with a raspberry pi).

So that is if the cost is comparable to getting the P3.

Without the features of the P3 integrated; who changes settings so often that
the included programmable macro buttons aren't enough?

Touch screen UI is and has been extensively used - 3 billion touch screen smart

for your keyboards to protest that phones and tablets are not the same thing.
Well, touch screen UI have also moved over to commercial products, the military
and airline pilots also use touch screen UI communication devices. If they are
good enough to be used on commercial aircraft and in military applications,
then it sure is good enough for ham radio.
Touch screen UI panels having become so prolific, that they have dropped the
cost enormously, resolution is picture sharp and reliability is extremely good.
Touch screens have huge potential, and almost unlimited versatility. If you
need more knobs or buttons on your rig, due to new features having been
added……no problem with a touch screen.
Just a firmware update to add a knob, button, slider or meter onto the screen.
The problem with conventional rigs, is you run out of physical knobs and
buttons when features are added to the radio. I see this in my KX3 - some knobs
have three functions, and to try and remember what each knobs second or third
function does, becomes difficult.

Food for thought :-)

I ordered it from Lisa at the Huntsville Hamfest, but asked her to defer

I also ordered a Flex 6700 at the hamfest.
Nice to know that I will own three of the top four radios in the Sherwood

It will be interesting to see the results when Rob tests the K3S.

[Elecraft] Installing Sub Receiver

2015-05-08 Thread K5HM
I am down to the part where I put the Sub receiver enclosure into the K3 and
mate with the pins connecting the Subin and Subout boards to the enclosure.
But - Once I set it in the rig, I can't see if the pins on these connectors
are properly aligned. There is not a good viewing angle It looks ok but I
could be off to one side by a pin or two or miss the connector altogether.
The long screws that pass all the way through the enclosure, mate up with
the standoff on the main receiver board.

Any way to know if I did it right before I complete the installation and
plug it in?

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Yes, I learned all the temperature

Unfortunately, I don't live in the metric universe, I just visit it.

With all the complicated things the K3 firmware does, it seems that Celsius to

Re: [Elecraft] Digimodes what am I missing?

2014-03-21 Thread K5HM
I guess everyone is entitled to pursue the hobby the way they wish. The fact
that it’s a digital mode or CW really has nothing to do with it. You can
hear the same canned and non-conversation exchanges on CW or SSB. I know CW
operators that don't own a key. For them it's just another digital mode.
They use the same canned macros we see in RTTY or PSK.

Today's hams live in a world filled with text messages and Twitter. To them,
CW might just as well be another form of texting. It's no wonder they can't
have conversations with each other.

Mastering the technology is a big part of what fascinates me about ham
radio. For me, digital modes are a part of the merging of two worlds in
which I grew up and, which grew up with me. Radio and automation.

I like trying new stuff. It's one of the reasons I chose the K3. After
almost a year of ownership, I'm still learning about what this radio can do.

I can and do understand the achievement to get a new mode working, which is
the only satisfaction that I can find.

Why?

Having succeeded in getting any Digimode working the only  traffic I see
are canned messages and brag dialogues of no great interest.
All rather boring and impersonal.
What PC, how much memory, what operating system ad nausea.

Yes I operate CW and the rubber stamp and the DX QSO are very familiar to

I am not knocking the Digimodes I hope but would like to know,  are there

and line in easy enough with the UP;/DN; commands.
Then things get complicated. I don't see a command to read the value mic
gain or mic bias.. Then I need some kind of command that will do
IF then do else

I can toggle the value of the gain setting between high and low with SWT11
and toggle between bias or no bias with SWT12. But without an If statement,
there doesn't there is a way to know whether I need to toggle or not.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft and Ten Tec

2013-06-25 Thread K5HM
Roger, I considered an Omni VII or the K3. The K3 won out for me because it
was so modular that I could add to it as I grew my interests. I don't find
the menu system a problem because I rarely go that deep into it.

If you're not computer friendly, the K3 may not be your cup of tea.

Over all, I hear stuff I couldn't hear before and its flexibility is
amazing. As a friend said, you can change everything but the size of the
box. I've had it about six months and I'm still learning things about the
radio. Elecraft Tech support is the best I have seen in the field.

Roger,

I went through the same decision process as you a few years ago. I had a
Ten-Tec at the time. I bought my K3 kit sight unseen.

As for the radio, I can't imagine anything better that my ears would notice.
(I use a CM500 headset/boom mike.) I bought the 8-pole filters to give it
the steepest skirts. I bought a few extras, but I did not stuff it full. I
find the K3 QSK is excellent if you are wondering. Pretty much, everything
about CW is user tailored. The CWT feature is great.

I find operating conveniences are excellent. The chassis size has been fine
for me.

As for the menu question, it gives me no trouble, and using a menu is seldom
needed. IMHO, the menu system is easy to use, and affords versatility to the
radio.

Your decision should include the future possibility of adding a P3 pan
adapter. It adds flexibility and control to operating. Even if you only
ragchew, it will show interference on the band and is a valuable aid for
trouble shooting.

All things are relative. I recommend you consider your vision if your plans
are to build a kit.

I also use HRD / DM780. It works fine for me. Initially, v6 was a little
shaky but they've smoothed it out pretty well. I use it more now than I did
with my FT-857D.

I hope Keith is right and they incorporate WSJT into it. I've been using

I installed the KXV3A feature and attempted to run the 1 Milliwatt
Transmitter Gain Calibration Test. The test failed as follows

Elecraft K3 Utility Version 1.12.12.17

OS Version 6.1 Build 7600 Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2

K3 MCU version 04.60. RS-232 speed 38400 bit/s.

Starting 1 milliwatt calibration

Calibrating at 1.900 MHz

Calibration power settled at " 0.27 MW;"

Elapsed time: 7 seconds

Tx Gain calibration failed because transmit power did not reach the expected
value

I used a 1 KW Dummy load with RG 58 cable.

Need suggestions to solution please. .

Ron,

Unless the SB200 has been modified to use positive voltage for PTT, you
will need some sort of interface (like a relay) in the PTT line. The
SB200 uses slow open frame relays for T/R switching, so it is not
suitable for QSK operation, so use PTT in the K3 to allow the realys
time to switch - or get a QSK add-on mod for the amplifier.

As for the ALC, the best recommendation is to not connect it. Adjust
the output of the K3 to properly drive the SB200 and there is no need
for ALC.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 PSK no output

Don,

That is exactly what happened when I tried to adjust the output with the
Audio gain! I'd set it once to be ok. Then on the next transmission it was
different.

So I now have it set with the ALC configured per the manual and the power
setting in the K3 controls output power.

Ron,

I suspect you set the powe5r to maximum and are attempting to control
the RF output with the audio level. That is typical advice given on the
internet and other data mode instructions. That advice is not for the
K3 - it will not work right.

With the K3, ignore that common advice for other transceivers which tell
you to set the transceiver to full drive and adjust the RF level by
changing the audio level.

The way the K3 controls power is different than most rigs - it measures
the actual power output and then adjusts the RF drive to produce the
power requested by the power knob.

So with the K3, adjust the audio for 4 ALC bars with the 5th bar
flickering, and use the power knob to set your desired power output.

Failure to do it that way will result in "power hunting" by the K3 and
you will not have consistent power output.

My computer software has a choice of waterfall bandwidth, 2K
(from 400Hz to 2400Hz) or 4K (400Hz to 4400Hz). In both Data A
and SSB I can adjust the DSP bandwidth up to 4200Hz on the high
end which gives me most of the bandwidth of the 4K setting. Note
that you will need a wider crystal filter than the 2.7KHz
default to get the wider DSP bandwidths.

Most of the time I narrow the DSP bandwidth down to 100 to 250Hz
for QSOs. It keeps strong stations from overloading my computer
software input.

Don and Joe have described the advantages of Data A over SSB for data.

As a K3 newbie here, would the mic impedance (H or L) be a possible issue? I

could not get any ALC movement until I went to H impedance for the Heil

bars on ALC I get 100 watts out. If I Adjust the TX pot on the Signalink to
reduce power, The ALC drops off.

On ICOM gear I'm used to controlling power out with theTX pot on the
Signalink. Is it different for K3?

Ron,

Try in TX TEST mode - everything goes into transmit except there is no
RF output.
Adjust the audio level (both SignaLink and the "mic' gain on the K3) to
obtain 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flickering.
If you are not able to obtain that level, check the SignaLink
documentation to determine how to plug it for Line level audio output -
I believe it is a jumper, but the default position is for low level
output (mic level).

Once you are able to obtain the proper deflection on the ALC meter, get
out of TX Test and try it. You should have RF output.

[Elecraft] K3 PSK no output

2013-03-04 Thread K5HM
Using Tigertronics sound card. Followed the set up instructions for PSK in
the Fred Cady, KE7X book. Installed the K3 jumper block from DX Engineering,
and the K3 interface cable. Using Digipan, I try to call CQ. Rig goes into
transmit mode, the macro runs but no power out. Adjusting the TX pot on the
Signalink does not make a difference. I can receive Ok. But either the
soundcard is not outputting anything or I missed a step in the setup.
Config.Lineout is 10 as recommended VOX/No VOX does not seem to matter. Rig
is in Data A mode. I must be missing a step in set up.

Suggestions welcome.

[Elecraft] FW: K3 "TERM" message

2013-03-04 Thread K5HM
While setting up for PSK operation, the message TERM appeared while I was in
the config menu. K3 locked up. Restarting the radio solved it but don't

Re: [Elecraft] Cannot Change bands with Ham Radio Deluxe

2013-03-02 Thread K5HM
Don,

Before I changed the VFO setting, I was having the same issue with N1MM and
HRD 5.24. After setting VFO IND to Yes, I had no problems getting the K3 to
change bands from the spot map in either system.

With N1MM, I had no problem running split in the DX contest last night after
the change. Haven't tried it yet with HRD 5.24 but expect that it will work
the same.

If you make that change, I think you may have a problem with running split.

However, with the new release of HRD this problem was cured in the CAT
commands so you do not need to change this setting on the K3.

I wish I could exactly remember what the issue was but I needed to change it

back to the default in order for my K3 to work the way I wanted to operate.

fine. Have you backed up a HRD version? Has HRD ever worked for you?
Have you tried other logging programs?

You need to know what HRD is sending to the K3 to diagnose the problem.

Currently using HRD Ver 5.24. under CAT Control.  I click on a spot from the

[Elecraft] Vox Settings

2013-02-26 Thread K5HM
Does anyone have some suggested starting VOX settings for a newbie K3 owner?
I used it for the first time tonight. Got great audio report.

I'm using it with a boom mounted Heil GM-4. I'll probably have to move the
boom mount off the desk where it can't pick up the vibration of something
moving on the desktop.

I realize that each person is unique but could use some suggestions.

Thanks for all the positive comments on the K3 VOX. I have a Goldline mic

[Elecraft] VOX on the K3

2013-02-20 Thread K5HM
My new K3 has VOX capability of course.

I haven't used VOX since the fifties when SSB first came out. Back then it
was fairly annoying since it usually clipped the first syllable short when
you started to speak.

Just wondering if anyone is using it regularly. Is it better than PTT or a
foot switch in contests or casual operation?

Disable mic BIAS and use the HI mic gain setting. It will work fine.
