Well, touch screen UI have also moved over to commercial products, the military and airline pilots also use touch screen UI communication devices. If they are good enough to be used on commercial aircraft and in military applications, then it sure is good enough for ham radio. Touch screen UI panels having become so prolific, that they have dropped the cost enormously, resolution is picture sharp and reliability is extremely good. Touch screens have huge potential, and almost unlimited versatility. If you need more knobs or buttons on your rig, due to new features having been added……no problem with a touch screen. Just a firmware update to add a knob, button, slider or meter onto the screen. The problem with conventional rigs, is you run out of physical knobs and buttons when features are added to the radio. I see this in my KX3 - some knobs have three functions, and to try and remember what each knobs second or third function does, becomes difficult. Re: [Elecraft] Digimodes what am I missing?
I guess everyone is entitled to pursue the hobby the way they wish. The fact that its a digital mode or CW really has nothing to do with it. You can hear the same canned and non-conversation exchanges on CW or SSB. I know CW operators that don't own a key. For them it's just another digital mode. They use the same canned macros we see in RTTY or PSK. Today's hams live in a world filled with text messages and Twitter. To them, CW might just as well be another form of texting. It's no wonder they can't have conversations with each other. Mastering the technology is a big part of what fascinates me about ham radio. For me, digital modes are a part of the merging of two worlds in which I grew up and, which grew up with me. Radio and automation. I like trying new stuff. It's one of the reasons I chose the K3. Roger, I considered an Omni VII or the K3. The K3 won out for me because it was so modular that I could add to it as I grew my interests. I don't find the menu system a problem because I rarely go that deep into it. If you're not computer friendly, the K3 may not be your cup of tea. Over all, I hear stuff I couldn't hear before and its flexibility is amazing. As a friend said, you can change everything but the size of the box. I bought the 8-pole filters to give it the steepest skirts. I bought a few extras, but I did not stuff it full. I find the K3 QSK is excellent if you are wondering. Pretty much, everything about CW is user tailored. The CWT feature is great. I find operating conveniences are excellent. The chassis size has been fine for me. As for the menu question, it gives me no trouble, and using a menu is seldom needed. IMHO, the menu system is easy to use, and affords versatility to the radio. Your decision should include the future possibility of adding a P3 pan adapter. It adds flexibility and control to operating. Even if you only ragchew, it will show interference on the band and is a valuable aid for trouble shooting. All things are relative. The SB200 uses slow open frame relays for T/R switching, so it is not suitable for QSK operation, so use PTT in the K3 to allow the realys time to switch - or get a QSK add-on mod for the amplifier. As for the ALC, the best recommendation is to not connect it. Adjust the output of the K3 to properly drive the SB200 and there is no need for ALC. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/20/2013 4:49 PM, K5HM wrote: > Have a newly refurb'ed SB200 that I want to run with my K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 PSK no output
Don, That is exactly what happened when I tried to adjust the output with the Audio gain! I'd set it once to be ok. Then on the next transmission it was different. So I now have it set with the ALC configured per the manual and the power setting in the K3 controls output power. 73, Ron, K5HM k5hm@gmail.com www.qrz.com/db/k5hm -Original Message- From: Don Wilhelm [mailto:w3...@embarqmail.com] Sent: Monday, March 04, 2013 5:26 PM To: K5HM Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 PSK no output Ron, I suspect you set the powe5r to maximum and are attempting to control the RF output with the audio level. That is typical advice given on the internet and other data mode instructions. That advice is not for the K3 - it will not work right. With the K3, ignore that common advice for other transceivers which tell you to set the transceiver to full drive and adjust the RF level by changing the audio level. The way the K3 controls power is different than most rigs - it measures the actual power output and then adjusts the RF drive to produce the power requested by the power knob. So with the K3, adjust the audio for 4 ALC bars with the 5th bar flickering, and use the power knob to set your desired power output. Failure to do it that way will result in "power hunting" by the K3 and you will not have consistent power output. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/4/2013 5:38 PM, K5HM wrote: > Don, > > Ok, that worked, Tried a couple of Q's and all ok but notice that with 5 > bars on ALC I get 100 watts out. Re: [Elecraft] Cannot Change bands with Ham Radio Deluxe
HRD works ok with my old radio an ICOM 718. And seems to work with HRD 5.24. This is the only anomaly I found so far. Haven't tried it with other logging programs yet. I am going to switch to Logic 9 soon. Think it might be the CAT cable; will try that. 73, Ron, K5HM k5hm@gmail.com www.qrz.com/db/k5hm -Original Message- From: Brian Alsop [mailto:als...@nc.rr.com] Sent: Friday, March 01, 2013 4:01 PM To: K5HM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Cannot Change bands with Ham Radio Deluxe Has to be with HRD. Re: [Elecraft] Cannot Change bands with Ham Radio Deluxe
Currently using HRD Ver 5.24. under CAT Control. I click on a spot from the DX cluster and the K3 will switch to the new band and DX freq momentarily then comes back to last band and freq. If the spot is in the same band that I am presently on, it will move to the new freq and stay there. But if it has to change bands it doesnt stick. 73, Ron, K5HM k5hm@gmail.com www.qrz.com/db/k5hm __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Vox Settings
Does anyone have some suggested starting VOX settings for a newbie K3 owner? I used it for the first time tonight. Got great audio report. I'm using it with a boom mounted Heil GM-4. I'll probably have to move the boom mount off the desk where it can't pick up the vibration of something moving on the desktop. I realize that each person is unique but could use some suggestions. 73, Ron, K5HM k5hm@gmail.com www.qrz.com/db/k5hm __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] VOX on the K3
Thanks for all the positive comments on the K3 VOX. I have a Goldline mic and am just waiting for the boom to arrive so I can set it up. Contesting is my thing and I was hoping that VOX would allow hands free without having to use a foot switch. 73, Ron, K5HM k5hm@gmail.com www.qrz.com/db/k5hm __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] VOX on the K3
My new K3 has VOX capability of course. I haven't used VOX since the fifties when SSB first came out. Back then it was fairly annoying since it usually clipped the first syllable short when you started to speak. Just wondering if anyone is using it regularly. Is it better than PTT or a foot switch in contests or casual operation? 73, Ron, K5HM k5hm@gmail.com www.qrz.com/db/k5hm __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

On the K3, when listening with the sub receiver on a different band than what you are transmitting using the Main, is the sub receiver muted? 73, Ron, K5HM k5hm@gmail.com www.qrz.com/db/k5hm __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
