Re: [Elecraft] K3 - CONFIG question

2010-09-15 Thread KD3TB
I have found that one program (MixW - a general logging and digital program)
requires me to set PTT-KEY to an RTS-DTR setting. I have not been able to
find a work around.

Do you need to key the radio with the RS-232 flow control lines?

The K3 CONFIG:PTT-KEY menu item can be set to OFF OFF unless you're using a
program that requires it...

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - CONFIG question

I am trying to manage an issue I have with my computer:K3 connection.
Whenever the computer changes power state (on to sleep, sleep to on, etc.),
it appears the serial (true serial) port burps and the rig gets keyed. And
of course when I power up the K3 in the morning I always am forgetting to
put it into tx-test mode.

Thus my question. Is there a means by which I can force the K3 to come up
in tx-test mode? This could be a setting which I've overlooked, or perhaps
some sort of "start programs" list that is only executed at K3 reboot.

All ideas much appreciated.

[Elecraft] Help with Feedback or Radio Noise ?? with my K3

2010-09-28 Thread KD3TB
I am trying to find and resolve the source of speaker/headset noise I am
getting with my K3. The noise sounds like a continuous fan noise in the
background. I think the noise is showing up in the Monitor circuitry ? Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

I discovered a high noise level coming from the K3 when I key the
transmitter in SSB. I am not sure if it was there before, as I rarely use
the Monitor function. It occurs with/without any headset connected (appears
in the radio speakers too) and with/without any microphone connected. I
have also tried a number of different microphones and headsets. I get the
noise in both Test Mode or Normal transmit mode. I also get the noise when I
transmit into a dummy load. I am using a Monitor Level of around 8 to hear
the noise. Obviously it gets loader with a higher Monitor settings.

Here are my settings and what I have tried so far:

MIC SEL - High or Low makes no difference; Bias on or off (should be off
for my microphones) makes no difference.

TX GATE - On or Off and tried different settings - No difference, I even
hear the noise at a setting of 25. I have set it to On with a setting at
09

No difference with Pre-Amp or Noise Blank on or off.

I have played around with the MIC and COMP setting with no Mic connected. As
I raise the MIC and COMP settings, the noise gets louder.

Finally I set the radio to:

MIC - set to 20

COMP - set to 20

I have the latest Firmware with both my K3 and P3. The K3IO Buffer Kit Mod
for the P3 was done.

Any suggestions on setting(s) that I may be missing would be appreciated.

Thank you, Irwin KD3TB

Re: [Elecraft] Help with Feedback or Radio Noise ?? with my K3

2010-09-29 Thread KD3TB
I thank everyone for their suggestions regarding the Line in settings. I
have tried the following and still find the back ground noise Monitor on SSB
(Microphone disconnected).

MIC SEL - rFL, fPL and Line In settings - still hear fan noise on keying
MIC+LIN - On or Off makes no difference.

I even pulled the Lin in and Lin out plugs to the K3 - still hear fan noise
on keying.

I do not think it is coming from the Lin In plug? A future firmware option
maybe to turn off the Lin in when keying the mic even though this would not
solve my problem.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

Thanks, Irwin - KD3TB

[Elecraft] K3 MON feedback question

2010-10-19 Thread KD3TB
I found a similar problem and would like to add my "2 cents" for a future
firmware update.

Currently the Mic+Lin (Menu) setting is either on or off. I would like to
see an additional option that mutes the Lin In audio, when audio is picked
up on the Mic Input. This would prevent audio feedback from getting into the
TX signal (and Monitor audio)from the Lin-In when using the Mic to transmit.
To date, no one has said that this "noise audio" is being transmitted on my
signal. I do find that when recording a message in the K3 DVK, the audio
from Lin In will bleed over into the recorded message.

Thanks, Irwin KD3TB

[Elecraft] Mic Gain and Compression settings for Line In

2010-12-23 Thread KD3TB
Is there is a way to set a different compression setting for Mic input
versus Line input as you can with Mic Gain.

As I use the Line Input for PSK31 and RTTY, I would like to set the Line
Input compression to zero. This way, when I switch between Voice and PSK31,
I do not have to keep adjusting the compression.

Thanks and regards for a warm and joyous holidays.

I think I have figured this out. I switch from SSB to using DATA Mode for

not change the Mic Compression.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in SSB

2010-02-16 Thread KD3TB
Our VE2DXY team (zone 2) exclusively used K3 Radio's for the CQWW SSB
contest last year. Previously we had used Icom 756pro's and other Icom
radio's. Although not, scientific, and there are many factors which affect
propagation, we felt there was a significant difference in our ability to
hear and work weak stations. We also felt that the filtration in the K3
gave us an edge in the crowded bands even over the 756pro with the IRC
roofing filter installed. If you can't hear them, you can't work them. One
of our operators who joined us this year had previously used an Icom 7800 in
the contest. He was so impressed with the performance of the K3 that he
stated he wanted to purchase one going forward.

This weekend, I used the K3 in AFSK for the RTTY contest. I used the 500 Hz
roofing filter and was able to work numerous stations, picking out stations
in a very crowded band. Previously I had used my Icom 756pro.

Once again, this is not scientific and just my opinion.

[Elecraft] Friday the 13th and Gremlins having fun

2011-05-13 Thread KD3TB
Being Friday 13th, I have to share this experience with everyone!

I installed the newest firmware on May 12th, not Friday the 13th and
everything worked fine. When I turned the radio on today (Friday 13th) my
K3 had no RF output and showed an SWR of >25/1 on 15M. All of the other
bands were fine. I tested the antenna (a beam) with another radio and 15M on
the antenna was fine. Being Friday the 13th, I even check that the radio was
set to the proper antenna output on 15M...still no output.

Okay, not being superstitious, I went to the K3 utility and restored my
previous configuration. 15M now worked! I then went back and restored the
new configuration I saved after the latest firmware update yesterday.
Wonderful things happen, the output on 15M was now working again. I checked
the firmware installed on once again had the latest firmware installed. What
can I say! I think the Ham Radio the gremlins that reside in everyone's
shack had their fun and stopped playing with me

I'm glad I'm not a Triskaidekaphobic!

[Elecraft] K3S and RTTY Contesting with N1MM+/MMTTY

2016-02-06 Thread KD3TB
I am just posting to see what is the experience with others.

I have a new K3S radio that uses the new USB for Sound and Radio Control.
For RTTY contesting I use N1MM+ with the MMTTY interface. Since the USB
Codec control appears to act differently than a standard serial port, I need
to put the Radio in VOX to key RTTY in N1MM+. In the past with my older K3
which used a standard Serial port connection, I did not have to do this. My
K3 Settings are: Tx Data Mode (AFSK A), with PTT-KEY in rts-dtr . No
difference in Safe versus unsafe modes. It also requires the VOX on in FSK
mode too. When I use must MMTTY by itself, I can key with the correct Com
port. I am sure this has something to do with how N1MM+ interfaces with the
new K3S USB Codec . I have not tried this with other RTTY programs such as
FLdigi, etc. Everything works fine in CW, DVR Memory keying with the
correct codes, etc.

With Ham Radio Deluxe, since it uses a TC/IP connection between the software
and radio, I do not need to have TX Data in VOX on mode.

I am not sure to eliminate the requirement for VOX on, if it requires an
update in either K3S firmware or how N1MM+ interfaces with the K3S USB Codec
commands. - Or we just stay with VOX on when contesting.

Food for thought and what are others experience with the K3S and N1MM+/MMTTY
in RTTY contesting?

Thanks, Irwin - KD3TB

[Elecraft] Spot Function Question

2016-02-07 Thread KD3TB
With a new K3S, when I use the SPOT Function (in CWT) to tune in on a strong
CW signal, it makes a variety of Frequency changes depending upon how many
Hz digits are the VFO (settings)

For example:

When the VFO is set to 21.025.979 it goes to 21.026.018 a change in .039 Hz
a perfectly tuned in Signal

When the VFO is set to a few number of Hz digits in the display - 21.025.9
it goes to 21.026.8 (21.026.879) which is actually a change of 0.979 Hz and
a lost signal.

I am using a strong signal and a 400 Hz filter.

Since the display (number of Hz shown) should not have any effect on the
function of the spot, what other settings to I need to look at?

Thanks, Irwin - KD3TB

[Elecraft] KPA500 in the RTTY Contest

2013-09-30 Thread KD3TB
For General Information -

I ran the KPA500 in the CQWW RTTY contest this weekend. With a drive power
of 15 to 20W from the K3, I kept the KPA500 output between 350 and 400W
output. Even during runs (calling CQ), the temperature never went above 65
degrees on the KAT500 meter. The cooling fan changed speeds as needed and
kept the amp with its tolerances. This was enough power to break pile ups
and get into Asia with no trouble. The interface between the KAT500 and
KPA500 was seem less allowing me to quickly move between bands. Although
not listed as a RTTY contesting amp, I was really impressed with the KPA500
performance.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Firmware Problem

2014-09-27 Thread KD3TB
From: KD3TB [mailto:idar...@gmail.com]
Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2014 6:07 PM

Subject: KAT500 Firmware Problem

I had a problem when I installed the latest version of KAT500 Software
(1.67) and not sure what happened?

I had been operating for a few hours on RTTY and CW with my K3, KPA500 and
KAT500 with the previous version of the KAT500 Firmware (1.63). After a
while, I checked for new versions of firmware on the Elecraft site and
downloaded the latest version of KAT500 Firmware (1.67) and installed. I
also installed the latest version of K3 and P3 Firmware. At this point I
could no longer find a tune point and even on Bypass was getting a high SWR?
This was happening on antenna's that have a low (1:1.2) SWR. I then
reinstalled the previous version 1.63. Disconnected all power to the KAT500
, after a few minutes, reconnected power to the KAT500 and turned the power
back on. At this point everything was working fine..no problems.

I am not sure what happened? Firmware did not install properly?

Any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Firmware Problem

2014-09-28 Thread KD3TB
Dick,

That's exactly what happenedafter a lot of detective work, I determined
that my Ameriton remote switch is being flakey. It started to act up in the
RTTY contest. After the CQWW RTTY contest, I am going to take it apart and
check out what is happening..

So at least I know my KAT500 is working fine.

Thanks, Irwin

High SWR in ATU bypass and unable to find a match to a close-to-resonant
antenna suggests that perhaps the ATU is trying to tune with the wrong
antenna connector?

2014-11-06 Thread KD3TB
With the K3 in Split mode and Sub turned on, on 20 Meters I can hear the
Main and sub band in separate headset speakers, but cannot on 15 Meters

Is there a Config/Menu function that has to be set by band?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] E850463 15-pin KAT500 / KPA500 Cables

2015-01-21 Thread KD3TB
Hello to all on the list.

I have two genuine Elecraft 15 pin cables that are used to interconnect the
K3 to the KPA 500 and the KAT 500.

KAT500 to KPA500 cable. Provides band data to KAT500 for band change prior
to TX,, and feeds through KPAK3AUX cable data from the K3 to the KPA500.
Typically used in addition to the KPAK3AUX cable from the K3 to route band
data, keying and AUXBUS data through the KAT500 to the KPA500. (The KAT500
has AUX Cable IN and OUT connections.) This is the same 15 pin cable as is
contained in the KPAP3AUX cable set.

They are surplus to my needs and are functionally & cosmetically 100%.

They sell on the Elecraft website for $24.95 each.

I am offering them for half price -- $15 each or both for $25 + actual
postage to your destination.

PayPal or personal check OK.

Please contact me off list if interested. My call sign at arrl.net.

[Elecraft] KSYN3A synthesizer question

2015-10-26 Thread KD3TB
I have an older K3 with a sub receiver that I am thinking of upgrading.
This is a second radio that I use at my beach house. If I rarely use the sub
receiver, can I just upgrade the main receiver board with one KSYN3A
synthesizer or do I need to purchase two KSYN3A synthesizers?

[Elecraft] K3S and P3 Signal S-Meter scales do not matching

2016-06-12 Thread KD3TB
I recently installed the SVGA option in my P3 and noticed that the S-Meter
scales on the P3 and SVGA do not match the S-Meter scales on the K3S radio.
I probably paid no attention to this before. With the SVGA and a large
monitor it is much more noticeable.

Hence when I have a signal that is a S-20 (Receive) on the K3S meter, the P3
and SVGA only show the signal as a S3.

I am sure there is a way to get them to match in the menu settings?

Thanks, Irwin KD3TB

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500

2023-06-05 Thread Irwin KD3TB
Joe,
On the back of the KPA 500 you will find a fuse plug. You will switch this
between voltages using different fusses. Be careful to use the correct
fusses for the specific voltage. You can find the directions in the manual.

[Elecraft] KAT500 Question - Manual Mode Light is Flashing

2021-02-12 Thread Irwin KD3TB
Set up: Flex 6500 with KAT500 & KPA500 using Elecrafts recommended settings

When I have the Tuner in By-Pass Mode for an antenna with a low SWR, even
when making small changes in the frequency, the Tune switches to MAN
(Manual Mode) and the MAN light is flashing. How do I get it to stay in
By-Pass Mode.

This recently started and not sure what changed? A setting in the KAT500
Config Mode?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Question - Manual Mode Light is Flashing

2021-02-12 Thread Irwin KD3TB
Andy,
I kept the KAT500 in auto tune mode & I think I solved the problem...1) a
loose plug in the back of the KAT500 & 2) probably snow or frozen
participation on the antenna connection. Not sure what finally solved it,
but all seems to be well During the contest so far.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Remote Power on Question

2021-03-09 Thread Irwin KD3TB
I am controlling my KPA500 using the Remote software running through my
computer using the Local Host Option. I am doing the same with my KAT500
with that remote software too. The objective was to move both off my main
station table. I can turn the KAT500 on/off using the software. Is there a
way to turn the KPA500 off/on using the remote software too?

Thanks, Irwin KD3TB
