2022-02-22 Thread KIRBY NESBITT
Hi Bill,I have a Remote Rig RRC-1258MkIIs for Elecraft K3 Twin setup that I
purchased a little while back for a project that never got off the ground.
Everything still new in the box including the Elecraft accessory cable kit. Had
planned on listing it but saw your post here. Shoot me an email if your still
interested.Kirb - VE6IV

Subject: [Elecraft] RemoteRig distributors in USA?

I recently obtained a second K3 and now I’m curious about remote operating my
home station K3. The RemoteRig RRC-1258MkII seems like a good solution, but I’m
having trouble finding anyone who carries it in the USA.

Elecraft used to sell, as well as HRO, but neither list this product.

Suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] Import duties on amateur radio items

2008-04-08 Thread KIRBY NESBITT
I would suggest contacting U.S. Customs and getting the correct tarrif number.
Amateur gear, particularly U.S. manufactured goods is 100% duty free under
NAFTA (inbound to Canada).

Re: [Elecraft] Morse on the Tonight Show, Tonight, Friday the 13th

2005-05-14 Thread Kirby Nesbitt
Its unfortunate they had to be costumed up as 140 year old telegraphers.
It may have been "cute" however it doesn't do our image much good. Some
would say that any publicity is good publicity but I'm not so sure in
this case.
But hey, more importantly, we're those FT-817's by any chance? Likely
just coincidence no doubt. Fortunately, at that distance you wouldn't
require a PA.

Re: [Elecraft] Trip to Canada

2005-03-03 Thread Kirby Nesbitt
Actually.. you will have an issue. "K2" is an official registered
"brand" used on cattle from a particular ranch here in AB. It is
registered with US customs at all border crossings. If the radio is less
than 32 months old you might get it back in, but theres really no
guarantee.

Hey all you VE's,

I realize this is off topic, but I need some information.I am going to
drive to Ontario next week on business and I have my mobile rig in the
car. I didn't intend to operate it, but can I bring it along and bring it
back in? I hate to take it out; it's such a hassle :-)

You should have no problem bringing it into Canada. Taking it back into
the US is up to US Customs! :-) I don't know how the US handles this; in
Camada, I can take items to Canada Customs and they will give me a
"green card" listing the items and their serial numbers. When I return
to Canada, that is my proof that I did not buy the item on my trip to
the US, so I won't get charged taxes at the border.

BTW, you can operate in Canada. As an Extra class, you will have full
privileges in Canada. Just sign as W1CG/VE3 (for Ontario), which you
would pronounce on voice as "W1CG mobile VE3", or "W1CG portable VE3" if
you set the rig up out of the car.

Re: [Elecraft] Soldering station questions (please, no wars)

I'm also in the market for a good variable temp station. Where is a good
place to buy on-line?

I'll take other recommendations just in case I have to go on-line to order
one.

Not knowing the manufacturer makes it tough to suggest ways to 'fix' the
current one.

1- If it is a "fixed temp" tip, try a new tip. A bad thermostat can cause a
tip to run cool. Apparently your tip is heating because you do eventually
melt solder.

2 - If just the soldering tip is replaceable, remove it and make sure it is
clean *inside* where it attaches. Corrosion that builds up at the attachment
point (threads, sleeve, etc.) can really cut down the heat transfer from the
element to the tip.

3 - If you "give up" on it, consider a Hakko 936-ESD. No, you can't get it
today if no one in town sells one, but they are available in two or three
days via web order if you want it shipped priority from various places.

They aren't "better" than Weller, nor is Weller "better" than the Hakko.
After all it's just a soldering station! The magic is in the hands that
wield it, not in the tool itself. I've used both, although I haven't use the
newer Weller stations. When I was last in the market for a new soldering
station, the Hakko price was the best.

I really like the front-panel knob temperature control. I think where a lot
of ops go wrong is using too COOL of an iron. Desoldering braid is nearly
non-functional with a 700F iron. At the least, it's likely you'll lift a
trace by leaving it "cook" too long. Cleaning enameled wire by the "blob"
method also is very poor at 700F, not to mention soldering larger terminals
instead of a board trace. The ability to tweak the knob up to 800F, wait 5
seconds, then go to work is a real advantage of the variable temperature
stations to me.
