[Elecraft] Paint for EC-2 Enclosure
All I have an EC-2 that is getting ready to be built into a power-supply, speaker et. for my K2. When the holes for the meters, speakers, switches, etc. are milled out in the front and back panels, there will undoubtedly be areas where the paint is removed that needs to be touched up. Where can I get pain that would match the color/texture of the existing pain on that enclosure? Thoughts and/or information from other's experience much appreciated. Thanks in advance. 73 - Ken Miller, K6CTW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Headset
All - Just my 2 cents worth as an almost 100% CW guy. I have been using the Radiosport Headsets from Arlan Communications for a while. I have their model RS20S with the gel earpads and cloth covers for my K2 (serial #455) as it is my QRP contesting rig and these phones are SUPERB! Has great isolation so I don't hear anything but what is coming thru the phones (which would be good for field day). The gel pads and cloth covers make them very comfortable for long sessions while contesting. Additionally, they are stereo so they would work perfectly with a K3/K3s where you could put one receiver's output in each ear for chasing DX when running split. I also have their model RS20CR, which is monaural and 600 ohms. This is for use with my vintage gear (Drake C-Line, R-4A and 2-B and Collins 75A-1). Also a outstanding performer, particularly when listening to the SW broadcast. I have not used their headset with microphone combination but if it works as well as these listen-only units it should be just terrific! Just my thoughts and hope this helps! Re: [Elecraft] K3S and expectations
As I'm sitting here reading a seemingly endless stream of comments on the new K3S, I was wondering how this same thing might have played out if this sort of communication had been available when say, Drake announced their R-4 Line, or when Collins announced their S-Line. That would have been really great to watch! One thing is certain though, Elecraft is certainly one of the best of the amateur radio companies out there with service like none other. [Elecraft] K2 Keying mod Questions
All, Now that I want to add some power to the K2 so that it could become a full backup station (instead of just my QRP contesting rig) I find that I may need to do some additional things to the rig. My K2 (serial # 455) does have most of the mods in it but one that I didn't do was the keying mod. However, when I went to order it the other day I found that mod is no longer available from Elecraft. Is there a replacement modification that does the same thing that uses different parts? The reason I ask about the keying mod is that it was noted that it was needed when using the K2's 100 watt amp and I was wondering if that still holds for the latest version of the K2 amp and also for the KXPA100? Also, I don't think I need to do the mod to the keying before I upgrade the firmware. Am I correct in that? [Elecraft] Improving Circuit Board Connections
All, I was talking with one of our vendors this past week when he mentioned a product that their network folks and others used when they had issues with a circuit board not working as advertised or when it had intermittent connections. The product that they use is called Satbilant. _http://www.amazon.com/D-W-Electrochemical-22S-50mL-Stabilant/dp/B001E50P5A_ Thought this might be of interest to the K3 builders as it could be very useful especially if the K3 was going to be operating in high vibration environments or was going to go on a DXpedition. 73 - Ken Miller, K6CTW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KPH Night of Nights!
In this eighth annual "Night of Nights", historic Morse code radio station KPH will return to the air in commemoration of the closing of commercial Morse operation in the USA. Frequency and reception report information for all stations appear below. KPH, the ex-RCA coast station located north of San Francisco, will return to the air for commemorative broadcasts on 12 July at 1701 PDT (13 July at 0001 GMT), 8 years and one minute after what was thought to be the last commercial Morse transmission in the US. Now the Maritime Radio Historical Society's own KSM carries on the tradition of commercial Morse. These on-the-air events are intended to honor the men and women who followed the radiotelegraph trade on ships and at coast stations around the world and made it one of honor and skill. Transmissions are expected to continue until at least midnight PDT (0700GMT). Veteran Morse operators, including former KPH staff members, will be on duty at the receiving station at Point Reyes, CA listening for calls from ships and sending messages just as they did for so many years before Morse operations were shut down. The transmitters are located 18 miles south of Point Reyes in Bolinas, CA at the transmitting station established in 1913 by the American Marconi Co. The original KPH transmitters, receivers and antennas will be used to activate frequencies in all the commercial maritime HF bands and on MF as well. Many of the KPH transmitters will be 50s vintage RCA sets. KFS will use a 1940s vintage Press Wireless PW-15 transmitter on 12Mc. This is the transmitter that was in service at KFS on the "last day" of American Morse and is thought to be the last PW-15 in service in the world. The transmitting antennas include a Marconi T for MF, double extended Zepps for 4, 6 and 8Mc and H over 2s for 12, 16 and 22Mc. KPH will send traffic lists, weather and press broadcasts as well as special commemorative messages, some of which will be sent by hand. At other times the KPH, KSM and KFS "wheel" will be sent to mark the transmitting frequencies. Members of the public are invited to visit the receiving station for this event. The station will be open to visitors beginning at 1500PDT (3:00pm). The station is located at 17400 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and is on the route to the Point Reyes lighthouse. Watch for a cypress lined driveway on the right about a mile past the entry to Coast Guard station NMC. KPH and KSM are operated by the Maritime Radio Historical Society in cooperation with the Point Reyes National Seashore, part of the National Park Service. Further information may be found on the Maritime Radio Historical Society Web site at http://www.radiomarine.org or by contacting Richard Dillman at +1 415-663-8982 (email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]). ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] RE: High End Paddles
All, I have used a number of paddles over the years, and now I use them only while mobile (I just can't make the Blue Racer NOT send extra dots on bumps :-)). I have tried the Bencher, the Vibroplex Square Brass Racer and have now settled on the Vibroplex Code Warrior. At home I have a Profi, and it has very positive touch but I still use a bug for almost all my CW as I find that it just "feels" better. I have 4 different Originals, a J-36, a WW-II Lightning Deluxe, a Champion, a Nye Viking, a Deluxe Mackey and my trusty Blue Racer (which I bought for myself in 1967 when I got my license). The paddles make great code, particularly when I try and get past 30 or so WPM on the bugs (which is where my sending starts to fall apart). However, since I don't get to go that fast very often anymore, the paddles have been just gathering dust on my operating desk. Besides, I can't send Morse (that's the REAL MORSE a.k.a American Morse) with a paddle. As time goes on, and when I can no longer make good code on my bugs, I'll go back to the paddles, but for now I think I'll just keep going with my trusty Vibroplex. Good luck and hope to work all of you on CW one of these days. 73, Ken Miller, K6CTW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] RE: PSK31 Software for Linux
An interresting assortment but not the one I use. I've been running Red Hat Linux (currently Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Workstation) for a number of years and the program that I use for soundcard interface programs is gmfsk. It not only does PSK-31 but a host of other protocols. I use tlf for contest logging. Have a look and I highly recommend the Red Hat variety as that is what I use at home and on my job (I'm a software engineer). 73, Ken Miller, K6CTW K2 #455 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Outbacker vs. buddipole etc.
I'll just add in my 2 cents worth here too. I've been using an Outbacker Perth Plus as a mobile antenna for the past 5+ years and have been VERY satisfied with the results. I run mostly 40 meter CW while I commute but occasionally work 20 CW and even once in a blue moon SSB on 20. The rig is a Yaesu FT-100D running 50 W and the antenna is mounted to a trailer hitch mount which is welded to the frame (thus a good counterpoise). On 20 meters I have 15 countries on CW and I have worked ZS6 and a a VK on SSB. On 40 meters I get excellent results and have worked most of the DXpeditions and regularly work most of what I can hear. Based upon my results, I would certainly look at the much larger (12 foot) Outbacker Outreach ( 500 W version) antenna and one of their tripod mounting systems. The antenna is a bit pricey at around $450 but based upon my resluts with the Perth Plus, I'll bet the performance on 160 - 6 meters is excellent. The tripod mounting system is nice too because it can be folded up and put back in the house, RV etc. and thus can be used anywhere and it should provide a descent ground counterpoise and a mounting system all in one. I plan on purchasing one of these systems soon so I'll let you know when I get it on the air. Good luck with your endeavor and hope to hear you on the bands. 73, Ken, K6CTW K2 #0455 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] More Clarifications on the Tonight Show - from K6CTW
*A few more points for clarification: When my XYL, Connie, originally answered the call, at my home, from the producers of the show, she explained that I operated both codes and that I considered myself to be a good but not exceptional operator. However, she is the one who "sold" the producers that the skit could work. She also did a VERY credible job of explaining Morse telegraphy and the radio code and its uses. (You all might think to send her a thanks too as without her, this would never have happened [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) When they contacted me later that afternoon, I explained that my wife was correct, I am a competent CW and Morse operator. Your point is interesting in that they did try and get the fastest text messengers they could fly in. I did however explain that if the Tonight Show folks had been able to get the equivalent world record holder in CW to do this, it would have been at almost TRIPLE the speed we were going at. The reason, as I have explained before, that we worked at about 28 or so wpm is that this is the fastest speed that I can make nice readable copy with a pencil as they did not have the ability to let me use a typewriter for copy (and I thought they were going to do a camera shot of my copy for verification). Also, since we did not have the time to set up headphones, I just added some extra volume for me, had the stage folks cut my mike (to prevent feedback and overload) and copied off of the speaker. To re-emphasize the point, I'm just an average CW op who occasionally operates the CW SS QRP, whith my K2 of course, and really enjoys CW, and traffic handling. By the way, the radios used were Chip's not from Yaesu and the backup radios were from HRO. 73, Ken, K6CTW * ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Continental Code Wins on TV!
All, Well to answer some of the questions I have received: 1. Ben was just getting ready to start entering the last 2 words when I was done. 2. None of us had any idea of the text we would be sending, not only for the "show" but also for the 3 rehersals (in which we smoked em every time) 3. Chip, K7JA was sending and I, Ken, K6CTW was receiving. 4. The radios were FT-817's provided by Chip's company Yaesu and HRO. Reason for that choice was that we needed the most frequency agile radios we could get. When I talked to the technical folks, they recommended we START at 2 meters and go up because of all of the lower frequency noise and RFI from the other TV equipment. When I got there, we took out a spectrum analyzer and studied all of the interference possibilities. I ended up choosing 432.200 MHz because that guaranteed no RFI from their equipment and we were high enough not to overload their front ends either. This was then verified and it was what we were using at the FT-817's lowest setting. 5. I already knew that 28-30 wpm would easily keep us in front of even the current world record holder, and also it is the fastest speed that I can make nice readable copy on paper with a "stick". 6. The telegrapher "costumes" were the producer's idea but it was fun for both Chip and I. 7. In rehersal I, K6CTW had a number of lines which would have really done a nice job of plugging ham radio and telegraphy however at our last dress rehersal, they decided to cut them out to make the segment "fit". (maybe next time). 8. I decided that I would be the receiver because I'm not bothered by crowd noise etc. If you enjoyed the segment, PLEASE email, write, etc. to let "The Tonight Show" know about it. That way we may have a chance for a bigger segment next time. Thanks for the kind comments from all and let's keep on having fun!
