Yes the Elecraft SSB net is 14.3035 at 1800 Z on Sunday. NCS is in Chicago. If
you don’t copy him, stay around because there are relay stations in Caif.
Oregon, Colorado , Fla. east cost, N. Texas and I forgot some.

[Elecraft] Propagation

2016-07-24 Thread Kurt Cramer
Today was the most difficult Elacraft SSB net I have ever seen. Two nets were
running at the same time..
One on the East coast, the other on the west coast! They couldn’t hear each

I started hearing Eric in Chicago here in Arizona. I guess there were a couple

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 and KAT2

2016-04-16 Thread Kurt Cramer
You guys are making this too hard. The 20 watt tunner mounts in the QRP K2 top.
When you take off the QRP top off to put on the 100 watt amp the QRP tunner has
gone away. I have both tunners and it is no problem going back and forth. The
100 watt runner has places for the K2’s feet to fit into on it’s top. So the K2
and tunner stay togeather. But the K2 will lift off. I made some side plates
out of aluminum that go under both the K2’s sides and the tunner’s sides. Now
if I pick-up the K2 the tunner comes with it.

[Elecraft] K2/10 SSB operating notes

2012-04-20 Thread Kurt Cramer

I run a K2/10 on a Southern AZ RACES Home Unit 75 meter SSB net every Saturday
morning. I am heard by everyone in Southern Arizona. The main point of the net
is to encourage stations to maintain and operate on a backup power source. I
maybe 10 db weaker, but I have about 50 pounds less battery then the 100 watt
stations. I check into a state wide RACES net on Sunday mornings and almost all
stations copy me. I guess I think every Amateur should have a 10 watt station.
Especially if they have more then one transceiver in their station. I admit I
have the 100 amp for the K2 and several older vintage stations and a amp with a
3-500Z and I use them all at different times, but if I could only have one
station it would be the K2/10.

Re: [Elecraft] K2s

2011-08-02 Thread Kurt Cramer

The K2 is unique! I built mine eleven years ago. It's still very much up to
date. Of course I operate with a couple of Drake twins sometimes! I added the
modules as they became available. I don't chase DX, or work contests (except
field day) so I don't find any need for the K3. Now the KX3 is another story.
It might be my intro into the next generation rig.

I don't chime in on many of these threads, but this one got me thinking. I was
first licensed as a Novice in 1951. As a General in 1952. I worked mostly 10
meters with a Harvey Wells TBS-50d. That had an 807 in the final, so ran 50
watts on AM. So that's about what a K2 runs on SSB. 12 watts on one sideband! I
worked the world. Well, the world was smaller then, a lot fewer Hams and I
worked mostly a north south path. So my world was central and south America.
Once a VK or ZL. Every day I'd come home from school, turn on the rig and talk
to DX stations. NOW if we can just get 10 meters to be wide open! Sunspot count
is 2128 today. There's hope yet.

I think the RF pot has a weak spot near the CW end. I don't know how it's made,
but if the resistance is decreasing as it goes toward CW then it is minimum at
three o'clock and increases slightly to full CW. Just my 2 cents.

After performing flawlessly for over a year my KPA100 has died for the
second
time in about 3 months. I was finishing a nice 20 minute QSO on 10M CW
last

week when the rig's lights flickered and the power supply shut down. Now
the power cord fuses blow and there appears to be a short when the power
supply is turned on - even with the rig off. The K2 itself is fine and
works great QRP but I need help with what direction to take with
diagnosing

the KPA100 trouble.
May be the KPA100 is upset that my K3 will be here in a couple of months
and

it and the K2 will no longer be center stage in the shack?

Any and all help greatly appreciated!

G'day to all,

I have a couple of K2s that I would like to exchange options in and am
wondering just how involved it would be. I did not build either of these
radios initially.

Here are the two radios:

K2/10 S/N 02689 with KSB2, K160RX, K60XV, KNB2, KAF2, KAT2

k2/100 S/N 3523 with KSB2 ( I have KNB2, K160RX and KAF2 kits to install )

What I would like to do is pull the KPA100 out of the one radio and make
what is currently the QRP radio a K2/100. I'd like to know if there is
anything to be aware of or reasons that this might be a bad idea. How
difficult of as project would this be?

Tnx es 73,

Hi all,

I'm vy sorry. I wondered why it seems I could not sent this mail to the

this rule deleted my mails as well as your answers.

So to all who send me an answer, please send again with subject "Proset

My original mail:

I am thinking about replacing the IC Mic in the Proset K2 with a HC-4.
My questing: Can I do this without any aditional things? Just solder out
the IC and solder in the HC-4? Or isn't it that simple? Of course with
no bias then...

However if it is that simple, what do you guys think? Would you
recommend this or is it better to leave the IC with the Proset K2 at the
K3?

I have entered the Alignment and Test Part II portion of my K2 build.

The "PLL reference oscillator range test" seems to check out fine. But
when

I run the "VCO test" (which is 80m @ 4000.10khz @ TP1 = 8-10MHz) I am not
seeing much of anything on the frequency counter. (I see readings on TP2

TP3 but not TP1.)

Any suggestions from others that have seen issues at this step in the
check

out process?

Re: [Elecraft] USB on all bands ??

2008-05-25 Thread Kurt Cramer
All my Drake rigs, T-4X(B,C) and TR-4C along with the R-4(ABC) work both
side bands on all bands. My Swan 240 doesn't, but it was a bare bones rig
when new. It covers 80 & 40 on lower and 20 on upper. They all use the 5 and
9 MC system.

[Elecraft] KPA100 updates

2008-05-21 Thread Kurt Cramer
I just updated my KPA100. This update is NOT for the weak at heart. The
instructions warn you that you will have to remove components from the PCB. 20
to 24 depending on the level of your board! That's a lot of desoldering! I have
worked in jobs that required removing parts from PCBs, so all came out OK, but
someone with no experience in removing parts may well let Elecraft or one of
the "Builders" do it.

I found the Spare Parts and Mod Kits ordering page very confusing. There is a
KPA100MODKT and a KPA100UPKT. Both go for under $20, so maybe this isn't very
important, but everything in the MODKT is contained in the UPKT. If you were to
do the MODKT first and then order the UPKT you'd have about half the parts left
over. As far as I can see there is no need for the KPA100MODKT now that the
newer KPA100UPKT is available!?

Mike,

Just put vinyl tubing over the braid. I've used ground braid conered with
tubing for years with no problem running it around, behind and under
equipment.

Subject: [Elecraft] Power Supply short protection

I am running my K3 from an Astron 35M. I experienced an accidental short
circuit on the power supply and I am wondering what everyone else does
about

the possibility of accidental shorts from exposed 12V wire lugs or the
exposed pass transistors on the back of power supplies (hot transistor
collectors).

In my case the PS is on the floor and you guessed it close to my shack
ground braid. While fiddling the ground braid touched one of the pass
transistor collectors and everything shut down, no damage done than
goodness. I would like a more permanent solution.

RE: [Elecraft] Farnsworth Method

2008-03-26 Thread Kurt Cramer
Ron & All,

I too was a novice in the early '50s. In fact I received the ticket in late
December '51. What a Christmas present! At about that same time I finished the
first semester of my freshman year in high school. I was taking a music class.
The teacher gave me a good grade and then suggested that I change to a shop
class next semester. I still can't dance, or send/receive CW very well. I did
operate quite a lot and got the General ticket by the next Summer. It took two
trys. The first I had some strings of characters in the lower 60s, but none of
65! I'm sure you will tell me I just didn't stick to it long enough. This may
have happened because my father was licensed and there was the 75A2 receiver
Harvey-Wells AM transmitter on ten meters during one of the best sun spot
cycles of all time.

Re: [Elecraft] Keith's Field Day

2006-06-21 Thread Kurt Cramer
My wife's Honda Element doesn't have the roof rack. However there are
small panels, just a couple inches on a side, in the roof area, that
cover the places where the rack would attach. When you remove these
covers you will find captive nuts (8 mm ?) that are to be used to hold
the roof rack. :-) I made a mount out of aluminum angle that will hold a
ham stick. You're on your own to figure out your mount. Since there are
four (6?) of these you could build a STRONG base that would hold a tall
support for a dipole that you only use at rest. When you're finished,
remove your mount and snap in the plastic covers and no one is the
wiser!

Anyway as you can see I like 'em. No it's not a contest receiver, but
listen to AM broadcast and even SSB and it a pleasure to rag chew with
it.

No I didn't try to use it with my K2. Came close while waiting for the
