FANticipator does not require WiFi, merely a computer on the LAN -

Subject: [Elecraft] RFE KPA1500 FAN PROFILE

May I suggest adding a command that allows users to select the more aggressive
6m fan profile on the KPA1500 for HF use? Call it, for example, FP6; to revert
back to the normal HF profile, say FPD. These could then be loaded into FP1
and FP2--We could select the best profile for the current op. 6m ops are
unaffected.
Digital users would find a cooler running amp for RTTY and FT8, for example, as
well as slow-speed CW ops and K4 users pushing the fabulous CESSB feature,
which does create a hotter running KPA.
My experiments show that just running the fans at FAN1 or FAN2 do not create
sufficient airflow as the amp heats up. Running at FAN3 keeps things cool, but
can create large swings in neatsink temps during rx periods.. It also irritates
the XYL, and makes copy more difficult, even with Radiosport, Heil, or Bose
QC-35 noise-cancelling heatsets
Likewise, experimenting with FAN DWELL did not solve the issue.
There is an external solution, FANticipator, but this requires a computer with
wifi, and a LAN connection to the KPA1500--more stuff that needs to work and be
turned on. FANticipator does very effectively lower PA temps AND fan noise. I
think the FP6 command will also help with noise and temps.
The advantage of implementing my suggestion is that it does not affect KPA1500
owners who are happy with the current HF fan profile, but can help those of us
with low noise tolerance, tinnitus, or who just want a cooler KPA1500, and does
it without an external Pc.
Finally, it could be a marketing tool, since ICOM appears to be touting the PW2
as a quiet. amp.
I would be happy to beta test this, if offered, and come back with some real
numbers
Thanks for your consideration.

Subject: [Elecraft] Cleaning solder flux

During my under-graduate and graduate school careers, I worked at
Honeywell's circuit board fabrication shop for about a year and a half. We
had two machines in the shop that dealt with flux: a reflow machine and a
parts set machine. The reflow machine was used to reflow the solder after
plating so that it looked shiny. The board was emersed in a 601-type flux,
heated to about 425F, cooled down, and then scrubbed (brushed) with
Isopropanol alcohol three times (stages) with a water rinse and force-air
dried (all automagically). The solder was beautiful and shiny at the end of
this process. The parts-setting machine was similar... the whole
(pre-reflowed) board was fluxed, the parts set, heated, and then cleaned.
All fluxes come off with Isopropanol alcohol (remember IPA is polar like
water and works that way).

Fluxes come in various forms... some are more corrosive and some not... so
you should follow the directions (right off the website). Rosin can remain
on a board, but also can be problematic because it can collect debris (dust
and other unwanted materials) because its plastic (flows at room
temperature) sticky. Many of the water-soluble fluxes are more acidic, and
will tarnish the solder joints if not removed.

On the subject of using water on electrical components... most components
(particularly if they might be mil spec) are made for water emersion (NOT
ALL!). In my office lab we routinely clean circuit boards by scrubbing them
with just water and force-drying them. Works fine. About a decade ago, I
used to buy up surplus AM/ broadcast band transmitters for repurposing to
other countries (mainly south America) for the Christian broadcasting
markets. Once back at my shop, the first stop was a good through power
washing in the driveway (paper and other water damaged goods removed of
course) followed by a good drying (leaf blower). Works fine!

Just yesterday, Rob Sherwood gave a Zoom presentation to the local

the evils of fast rise times and cited the optimal rise time as between
6 and 8 ms.
The Elecraft K3 line was described as one of the best behaved CW rigs,

Yaesu rigs were denounced for being user-configurable from 1ms to 8ms,
giving owners an opportunity to litter the bands with shorter times and

I read somewhere that the rise time was decreased in a previous firmware

It was originally 8ms, I think, which is unnecessarily long.

Can anyone help?

The FreqEZ Band Decoder will collect frequency data from some logging

It's a DIY project. The software is free. You'll have to buy or build

Re: [Elecraft] K3 band data query

2020-10-19 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Dennis,

The K3's BCD outputs are defined by band, not frequency. You need something
that tracks QRG, but the following may be serious overkill for your needs...

If you use the general purpose logger DXLabs, or the contest logger N1MM,
consider a freeware Band Decoder called FreqEZ. The program receives frequency
info from those loggers and allows you to to define 255 band segments that
control any combination of 16 remote relay lines. The software is free, but the
hardware components are not. The FreqEZ website describes a DIY solution or an
Assembled and Tested solution. (DISCLAIMER: I wrote the free software, but I
also sell the Assembled and Tested hardware)

www.freqez.info

If you only need a few outputs, you could probably cobble together something
that uses the free software but is simpler and cheaper. Contact me if you're
interested.

currently do this manually, but am installing vacuum relays for switching remotely.
Is there a way the K3, through the data port or whatever, can send a signal when
migrating between traditional (or operator defined) phone and CW portions of the
band?

Antenna matched points on 160 are at 1825 and 1855; 80M are 3520 and 3800.

I had considered sensing the K3 mode, but that’s not an acceptable solution.
The 160M CW contests can often extend into the traditional phone area and
FT8/WSPR often use USB mode in the CW portion.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Operation on 6 Meters

2020-06-15 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Ed,

Your dummy load choices at 1500 watts range from expensive and good
(Bird) to cheap and not-so-good. For example the MFJ-264 is listed as
handling 1500 watts but if you read the fine print (the derating curve
printed on its case ) you're limited to 8 seconds at 1500 watts. And
each time you stress that dummy load its resistor value climbs by a few
ohms.

Frustrated with the commercial options available, I built a dummy load
using a huge heatsink from a salvage VHF transmitter and a
series/parallel combination of four 50 ohm 250 watt resistors purchased
on eBay.

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY Problems on K3

2020-05-24 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Bill,

You could begin by breaking the problem in half - test at the output of
the optoisolators.

Front Half - Test what's coming from N1MM and MMTTY:
Put a scope or meter on the PTT line and click [TX] in MMTTY. Does the
line go low and stay low for the duration of TX?Put a scope or meter on
the FSK line and click [TX] in MMTTY. Does the line toggle at 15ms RTTY
intervals? With a meter the voltage would drop, indicating lower average
voltage - but something would be different between RX and TX.
>If this doesn't work, first place to check is the MMTTY >Options >Setup
>TX, "PTT and FSK" and >MISC, "Tx Port"

Back Half - Test whether the K3 is sending RTTY:
Use a clip lead to short the optoisolator PTT output to ground. Does the
K3 go to TX?While the K3 is still in TX, use a second clip lead to short
the optoisolator FSK output to ground. Does the TX monitor tone shift?

Subject: [Elecraft] RTTY Problems on K3

I am fairly new to the K3 but have no problems setting up N1MM and other
software, getting things to work properly. My problem is I cannot get RTTY to
send/TX. I have made a homebrew interface with optoisolators for both the FSK
line and the PTT line. I'm going from a separate serial port, pins 3 and 7,
for FSK and PTT, to the Assy(15 pin) connector. To pins 1 for FSK, 4 for PTT
and 5 for ground.

When I run MMTTY I cannot get the rig to key. If I switch to SSB or CW and use
the CAT line to work the PTT, no problem. If I switch to RTTY and try to use
the CAT line it will not key the TX. I've tried a variety of setting in MMTTY
and get no TX. I have a 1000MP set up with a similar homebrew interface and
have no issues.

Can anyone shed some help on me?

I built a slightly longer cable to match the length of the control cable

Is there any way to power off the fans (or lower their RPM) on the PSU if
the amp is in standby mode?

I would like to keep my rig on 6m throughout the day during the Es season.
The problem is my 6m antenna is on antenna port 2 on the KPA, which requires
the amp to be powered up. I only need to TX when a new grid pops up, but I
do like to monitor the band during the day while I'm working. My XYL is
working from home, and is in the same room for about 9 or 10 hours a day,
and the noise after 10 minutes was too much for her. Any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] Keyer goes berserk

2020-05-22 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Madison

Is the Paddle plugged into Mortty? Or is the Paddle plugged into the
Paddle input on the rear of the K3? Usually Paddles that behave like
straight keys are diagnosed as having been plugged into a straight key
input.

If the paddles are plugged into the Mortty CW keyer you should be able
to tell if they are working properly by watching Mortty's red PTT LED
and green KEY LED. Assuming that's the case - since Mortty works
elsewhere - my diagnosis is that you have Mortty plugged into the K3
Paddle input instead of the K3 Key input.

Neither the key nor paddle work on my K3. Using N1MM+ with a paddle and
MORTTY keyer hooked up, when attempting to send a command via the keyboard,
the K3 gave gibberish. When I attempted to use the paddle, it acted as a
straight key. Rebooted everything with the same result. After testing the
computer, all cables, connectors, the paddle, and the MORTTY interface and
finding all will operate satisfactorily with a Brand X transceiver using
the same N1MM+ program, same computer and with a paddle, I hooked
everything back up to the K3. Now the K3 will not key at all, either
through the program or manually with the paddle. Any suggestions before I
send it back to Elecraft?

Expanding on the "two different levels based on the amps OPER/STBY
switch" described by Dick, the cable enables those two levels per band.

For example, you can adjust the Operate level on 30 meters for a full
200 legal watts; 300 watts on 10, 15 and 30 into your TA33 Junior
tri-bander; and the amp's full output into your dipoles.

See pages 15, 16, and 27 of the KPA500 Owner's manual for a description of
what the 15-pin ACC cable can do for you.

It amounts to band information both ways so the amp can switch bands from
the K3's band information before you provide RF, the KPA500 front panel band
buttons can bandswitch the K3, and K3 drive power can be set to two
different levels based on the amp's OPER/STBY switch. My K3 provides 30
watts when the amp is in OPER, and 100 watts when the amp is in STBY.

48 volts for full power (1300 watts)

I no longer have the amp so I can't check the eff at those

Pete,

I don't run my amp at full legal limit on digital modes, but typically set the
input power for about 1000 watts output. One of the interesting characteristics
of the amp is increased efficiency as power increases. At 600 watts efficiency
is only 38%, whereas at 1000 efficiency increases to 50% and at 1500 watts to
60%.

Elecraft's published specs rate the KPA-1500 for 1500 watts output on all
modes. In prepping for this weekend's contest, I've been running it at closer
to 700 watts, because I've found that even just running on CW, with its much
lower duty cycle, my amp reaches 70C quickly. I don't do that much digital
contesting, though, so I'm wondering whether 1500 watts output is on digital
modes is realistic or a recipe for trouble.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Supply Fan Noise

2019-06-11 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Eric,

My shack is a relatively quiet operating environment, but declaring
something as quiet or noisy is always somewhat subjective. The fans in
my PSU are pretty quiet, but nevertheless the KPA1500 PSU is
remote-installed in a closet in my shack.

I am absolutely no "audio" guy, but years ago installed a free, cheap &
dirty noise level meter app on my android phone called "Sound Meter." I
use it to complain to restaurant managers that the blaring music in
their establishments is too loud for casual conversation, demanding that
it be turned down.

With the KPA1500 turned off and phone situated 3 feet from the power
supply, the noise level in that closet is 28 DB. Turning on the
amplifier raises the noise level by 12 DB to 40 DB - a 12 DB difference.
Not much difference, and certainly not the "piercing power supply fan
noise" you describe.

More broadly, has there been any progress on reducing the piercing power supply
fan noise on the KPA1500 when only using it as a tuner or an antenna switch? I
complained about this a year ago, and I find it completely unacceptable. No
set of noise-reducing headphones that I have tried works well enough to make
the noise tolerable. I've tried moving the PS deck around with minimal
improvement. This just doesn't seem to fit Elecraft's philosophy of a quiet
operating environment. Why do these fans have to operate at full throttle when
there is minimal current draw from the rf deck? Why do these fans create such
a piercing high-pitched note?
If there is no response from Elecraft, what have other ops done--short of
moving the PS into an adjoining room--to mitigate the scream?
Thanks,

Could you use a fancy Band Decoder that provides auxiliary outputs based

Well that's just it, the SWR is very, very high in the phone portions of
both 40 and 80.

I can't see any other way to accomplish full automated operation without the
second tuner. I am loathe to have two of them together, but I just can't see
any other way. I occasionally remote my own station, and even when not, I
can't risk another high power/high-SWR error, so on QSY I have no
alternative but to pre-tune before keydown.

40m is below 2:1 until around 7090ish, then rises very rapidly above that.
It's 8:1 at 7295.
80m is below 2:1 from 3500 to 3700ish, then rises to 10:1 by 4000 (although
it's closer to 5.5:1 at 3850, as high as I'll ever go.

-Original Message-

The ATU in the KPA1500 alone will achieve the 1.2:1 match with the 2.09
firmware, now in beta. The external tuner is not necessary, unless the
antenna SWR is very high.

Just a general comment on the KPA1500: My experience with it shows
that the SWR has to be below 1.2:1 at the amplifier output (ATU input)
to run reliably at full power. If the SWR is higher than that, the amp
will often fault due to excessive current or drive power before
reaching 1500 W. (And may splatter on SSB.) Elecraft recently updated
the ATU firmware to consistently find a better match, and it really helps.

I have a couple of questions about the KPA1500's internal tuner.

For the most part, I leave the tuner inline. Except for two sub-bands
(SSB on both 40 and 80m) I am well below 2:1, and maybe 2.5:1 at the
top end of 160m. The KPA does a good job throughout.

The problems/questions arise when I need to transition between the
KPA's internal tuner on the bottom ends of both 40 and 80, and the
external Palstar HF-Auto tuner, which I need to wrangle very high
SWRs on the phone portions of those bands. Obviously I don't want
both automatic tuners inline at the same time. The situation is most
 acute on

 40.

The HF-Auto (external automatic tuner) is bypassed everywhere except
the range of 3650 to 4000, and 7100 to 7300. I would like to
automatically have the KPA1500's tuner go into bypass at the above
ranges, just as the Palstar auto-tuner bypasses outside of those
ranges. Is this somehow possible, or must I manually switch the tuner
in and out when I cross the appropriate thresholds?

Second question, and I think this relates to the whole "bins" thing,
which I don't understand, relates to having different tuning
solutions on the same band segment. This could be handy for me on
80m. Unlike on 40, for 80 I have an inverted vee, and it's easy for
me to drop the ends and change the length of the antenna, so that
instead of being resonant at 3550 I could make it 3700. I did this
for the ARRL-SSB contest and it worked pretty well. Is it possible to
have two different sets of memorized tuning solutions in the
KPA-1500, in the event I have the vee set for CW (normal) or SSB (for

phone contests only)?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA fans in digital modes

2018-12-04 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Eric,

If you'll pardon a little self-promotion, you might consider using
FANticipator to control the fans in your KAP1500. It's free, runs local
or remote, and will perform those speed-changing tasks automatically for
you... including shutting the fans off completely when the amp returns
to ambient temperatures.

I, too, use FAN2 for both the KPA500 and KPA1500 in digital modes.
Both amps run considerably cooler and with less thermal variation.
It would be great if the PF1 or PF2 keys on the KPA1500 could be used
to toggle into a preset FAN2 (or choose your poison) when pounding away
on digital modes like MSK144 for meteor scatter on 6m. I don't know if
it would be possible to do something similar for one of the keys on the
KPA500--perhaps the AUX band switch? For both amps I switch back to
FAN NOR for casual CW use.
For all of you out there with even a 3el beam and 100w on 6m, please
try meteor scatter using MSK144--you can make contacts every day out to
1500km or more, even without a clear horizon. Schedules optional at
the Ping Jockey website. It's a blast!

There is often a significant gap between Theory and Practice, and such
is the case with using Windows as a self-regulated timepiece. True,
Windows is a well behaved ntp client, but the default interval for
Windows "phoning home" to resync is 7 days. In 7 days my PC has drifted
so far that FT8 operation is impossible.

The user has two choices: use Regedit and mess with the Windows registry
to reduce the interval; or install a time sync program. For most, the
second option is easier.

There should be very little reason to use Dimension 4, with step
updates at fixed intervals. The full implementation of ntpd is
available for all the Windows NT family, i.e. everything after Windows
95, and versions or w32time that can be configured to implement the
older version of NTP have been supplied with Windows since at least
Windows XP.

The standard ntpd always works by managing clock frequency, so there
are no abrupt time steps unless something has gone sufficiently wrong
to result in a step of at least 200ms. w32time can be configured to
work that way, although generally installing the standard (reference)
version of ntpd is preferred. (ntpd can be configured to almost never
step the time.)

Although Windows is not a good platform for time keeping, both these
approaches ought to produce times accurate to about 20ms, and only
slowly changing with time. In some circumstances, Linux can produce
several orders of magnitude better results.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 - Static IPv4 address

2018-09-19 Thread Larry (K8UT)
Yes. You can disable DHCP in the amplifier and assign a static address.
Your router must be capable (within its address range) of accepting that
static address without a conflict from another device.

In the KPA1500 configuration utility v1.18.7.9:

Select menu >Configuration >Edit Configuration >Network tab
On the network tab, disable (uncheck) DHCP
Manually enter the address you want the amplifier to use
Press OK.

Or is there a better method of using remote K3, KPA1500 and RemoteRig?

[Elecraft] KPA1500 FANticipator v1.0 - Console and Fan Controller program released

2018-09-06 Thread Larry (K8UT)
My thanks to the Beta group who assisted in testing and fine-tuning
FANticipator in preparation for its initial v1.0 release.

FANticipator is a free Windows application that connects to an Elecraft
KPA1500 amplifier over ethernet/WiFi and provides lightweight console
functionality and sophisticated fan (noise) control.

You can read more about the application here:
www.hamprojects.info

You can download the application from the file gallery of the
FANticipator groups.io reflector here:

https://groups.io/g/FANticipator

The author and Beta testers have been active on that groups.io
reflector, and you should direct your questions/issues about
FANticipator to that group rather than here on the Elecraft reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S fsk with usb

2018-08-30 Thread Larry (K8UT)
This thread is running parallel to a discussion running on the DXLabs
reflector today, due to the release of a new MMTTY FSK interface to
TinyFSK programmed by Oba JA7UDE. I'll apologize in advance for
inserting the following:

""""
I'd like to avoid having my response drag this thread into the perpetual
debate about AFSK versus FSK RTTY.

However, if you already know that you prefer RTTY via FSK there has been
a secondary argument about whether a RTTY application that is dependent
on the interrupt/event timing characteristics of Windows can produce
high fidelity FSK RTTY. Many (myself included) believe that the best
RTTY FSK signals can be achieved by "outsourcing" RTTY timing to a
separate processor -- which is exactly what TinySK achieves by running
on an external Arduino board.

Then the problem becomes "well, can my RTTY program (MMTTY in this case)
talk to a TinyFSK board?" Up until now MMTTY operating stand-alone had
no interface to TinyFSK. This new modem definition file from Oba JA7UDE
provides that interface. For users of other logging programs (like N1MM,
DXLabs WinWarbler) where the developers had previously written
work-arounds that could interface from MMTTY to TinyFSK, this work by
JA7UDE may simplify the plumbing and configuration of a TinyFSK
connection.

Finally, the last question becomes "well, what do I need to get this
working?" If you google "tinyfsk by K0SM" you will see many websites
(selfishly -- including my own www.mortty.info/mortty ) devoted to
connecting your PC's USB port to an Arduino board with supporting
hardware.

""""

Additionally, Joe W4TV added that there are commercial devices available
from several companies, most notably microHAM, which also "outsource"
FSK RTTY timing to their external processors.

Rich,

I seem to recall that the serial port needed for FSK generally cannot
come from the run of the mill USB/RS232 converters. They can't operate
at 45 baud/5 bit rate needed.

See: http://aa5au.com/GettingStartedOnRtty.pdf

This is old info and things may have changed.

So what does a guy who has only USB ports do other than AFSK? I
thought that was his question.

The serial port used for FSK keying by MMTTY must be a different
serial

cannot

share the same serial port.

The serial port interface can be a one-transistor keying circuit
connected

to a true serial port, or the same kind of interface connected to a
USB-to-serial adapter with the help of the EXTFSK plugin in MMTTY, or
a USB
device that incorporates both a virtual serial port and a keying
circuit,

such as a commercially available keying interface (e.g. microHam,
RigExpert, ...), or a TinyFSK (either with a special plugin for MMTTY

In principle, an RTTY program could use radio control commands to key
FSK
via the USB cable to the radio, but none of the RTTY modems supported
by
N1MM+ (including MMTTY) use this method. It should be possible to
program
CAT1ASC macros into the N1MM+ function keys to implement this
approach, but
I don't know whether anyone has tried this. There are a number of
people
who have used a similar approach for keying CW from N1MM+ with the KX2
and
KX3, and offhand I cannot think of a reason why it would not also work
in
FSK RTTY, but I have never tried it. Just as in CW, there are likely
to be
some features of N1MM+ that work with more traditional methods but
that

wouldn't work using this unsupported method.

Re: [Elecraft] beta Software: KPA1500 FANticipator - console and fan control

Hi Bob

"During Tx, override fan menu settings and run at settings +1"
(Not sure what this means, run fan at 2 when it normally would be at
1?)
Yes, that is exactly what it means. The assumption being that you would
rather hear the fans when transmitting (said the RTTY / FT8 guy ...)
than when receiving. And while transmitting be a little more aggressive
with heat removal than during receive. I wrote a short description -
perhaps not real clear - of the options here:
http://mortty.info/fanticipator-features/

>doesn't try to do fan adjustment when running full QSK
Correct. There is a minimum runtime built into the fan logic to avoid
short-cycling the fan motors. This sometimes results in the fan
continuing to run for a couple of seconds into a receive cycle.

>this fan logic could be built into the KPA1500 firmware
Perhaps. At this stage, FANticipator is at that proof-of-concept stage.
If KPA1500 owners are happy with it we can talk to Elecraft about
including a richer feature set into fan control.

FANticipator GUI has two checkboxes:

"During Tx, override fan menu settings and run at settings +1"

(Not sure what this means, run fan at 2 when it normally would be at
1?)

"After Tx, override fan settings and run at #1 until below 40c"

I assume it doesn't try to do fan adjustment when running full QSK,
between

every dot and dash, but there's some type of delay involved, right? It
also seems like this fan logic could be built into the KPA1500 firmware
if

the result is a quieter and cooler amp. on receive.

If it uses a 75 Amp PP connector, my inclination would be to use the

stock in the largest gauge I could fit in the application space. I'd
trim down the end of the conductor to JUST fit into the 75 AMP crimp
contact. Then, I'd tine the trimmed down end to bond ALL the
conductors

together right at the end before I crimped/soldered. Then, I'd
crimp/solder the terminal on making sure not to be sloppy and cause a
fitment issue. If possible, I would put as many twists in the
red/black

leads between radio and power supply connection as possible

I've not investigated the wiring yet, BUT, if there is a ground wire
between the PA chassis and the PS chassis, I would integrate the ground
wire into the power harness in a 3-wire bundle with all three wires as
close to the same length and shinked into a single cable.

But I'm nuts...

Any side by side with the KPA1500 and the Flex Power Genius yet?

I haven't seen any yet. I did have a conversation last year with 4O3A,
designer of the Power Genius. From what Ranko said, the Flex amp seemed
to have more headroom than the KPA1500, which might result in better
linearity at 1.5 kW, albeit at the expense of efficiency. (The specs
say

"capable of 2 kW.") There is some scheme to dynamically adjust the
supply voltage for higher efficiency at lower power, I presume for CW
and RTTY, where linearity isn't a big issue. I read somewhere that
supply voltage is NOT modulated in SSB mode, which I imagine would
cause

lots of nonlinearity. The Flex amp can do predistortion with their
radios. However, the KPA1500 also has an output sampling port, which
should allow it to do predistortion also with a radio capable of it,
probably including the Flex. (I wouldn't be surprised if Elecraft came
out with that feature eventually. Could that be the reason it has that
sampling port?)

The Flex amp has an external ATU, which 4O3A strongly favors, but I
think that's a personal preference. For most stations, with antennas
that aren't always below 1.5:1, a solid state amplifier without an ATU
is pretty useless, so I think Elecraft's decision to integrate it makes
sense.

While the Flex amp can certainly be made to work with Elecraft radios,
the seamless integration with the KPA1500 is very attractive. I'm happy
with mine so far.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 S/N 160 delivered today

2018-05-18 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Bill,

My KPA1500 also defaulted to FAN SPEED MIN = 0, but that is not fans off
(at least not on my amplifier).

My fans engage at 60c (low), 65c (medium) and 70c (egads).

Is there a menu explanation somewhere about the start/stop temps and
speeds? I would like a little more hysteresis in the 60c setting: start
at 60c but continue cooling until temp drops to 50c. That might work a
little better when running digital modes with long Tx/Rx intervals.

After having played with mine extensively last night, I was under the
impression that the fans would come on automatically when the temp
reached a certain degree. That is not the case. Mine was defaulted at
fan speed zero, which is fans off. You have to change the menu item for
fans to one of your liking. I had read a few postshere on the reflector
about 2 being an acceptable number. I agree.

If you crank it up to max (5) you might scare the dog, be careful, hi.

Re: [Elecraft] First impressions of KPA1500 #113

2018-05-11 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Hi Les

I also noticed the phantom SWR indication (jump to 3.4:1 on my amp,
displayed after transmitting - in Rx mode) that has only occurred twice,
and those times when the temp approached 60c. The output does not seem
to be affected - power level stays the same, and no fault condition gets
triggered. My external SWR/Power monitors also remained unchanged, so I
am thinking it is a display-only problem that is internal to the amp.

To try and avoid unexpected ATU retuning, studied the specs for the ATU
memories (page 17 of the preliminary doc) and methodically spun the VFO
across every band, pre-recording in ATU memory the settings for every
band/segment based on its intervals (10KHz, 20KHz, 100KHz, 200KHz).
Thereafter I just let the amp decide what it needs to do when changing
bands/frequencies. Have not witnessed any re-turning.

Arrived May 5th and setup was easy. I’m noticing periodically a
momentary higher than normal SWR indication on the SWR bar graph. And
I’m still trying to get used to the ATU. I’m experiencing the ATU
having to make adjustments sometimes at the start of a transmission
after the ATU has already been properly setup for the antenna and band.
Is anyone else experiencing anything this or am I doing something
wrong?

Re: [Elecraft] Static Discharge Through K-Pod

2018-03-15 Thread Larry (K8UT)

Chuck,

I had this problem in my carpeted shack with a desk chair rolling around
on a vinyl chair pad. After a little testing I determined that the metal
case of the K-Pod is not grounded.

The KPod uses a straight-through 6 conductor cable with identical RJ
connectors on each end. I built a slightly longer cable for my KPod,
using 6 conductors of a stranded 8 conductor flat ethernet wire. A 7th
conductor provides chassis ground from the K3 to the metal case of the
KPod.

I have had zero issues since grounding the K-Pod case.

Subject: [Elecraft] Static Discharge Through K-Pod

Greetings, All!

I'm getting static electricity shocks through my K-Pod case, and I need
some suggestions for mitigation.

Background: I keep my K-Pod on my operating desk just to the right of
the
shack computer mouse. I've noticed when I walk over to the desk and
grab
the mouse, the K-Pod will beep. Further investigation shows I'm
getting
static electricity discharge from my finger through the K-Pod, this
morning

I even noticed an arc from my pinky finger to the K-Pod case. When the
K-Pod beeps, the D1 and D2 lights will cycle.

The shack is carpeted, and I have a rolling chair on one of those
plastic
chair mats (which can probably go away if necessary,) I suspect that
mat is

probably contributing to the static problem.

Obviously, I don't want static electricity discharging through my K-Pod
and

then through my K3. I'd welcome any ideas for static mitigation
strategies. I was thinking some sort of grounded mouse/keyboard mat,
which

used to be more common, but seem hard to find these days.

Chuck Milam, N9KY

Re: [Elecraft] Walwarts - linear supplies

2017-11-21 Thread Larry (K8UT)
Two years ago, I embarked on a "wallwart-ectomy" in my shack, removing
all wall warts and replacing them with DC power cords that connected to
fused dc power strips, connected to a single shack linear supply. Band
decoder, PC speakers, SDR Rx, wavenode wattmeter... none of those items
have their own power source any more.

All Electroncs (www.allelectronics.com) has analog wall warts of
various

voltage/current capability depending on what is available in surplus at
any given time. One may not even need regulated voltage as many
devices

contain internal regulators ...

They presently show 12 V @ 500 mA and 12.5V @ 410 mA units that appear
to be analog for less than $5.00 each in Q=1.

[Elecraft] OT - Intro to FT8 powerpoint presentation

2017-11-13 Thread Larry (K8UT)
Several weeks ago there was a series of reflector posts by hams looking
for materials on FT8 to use in PPT presentations. I had offered to post
my slides after delivering to the SEMDXA club meeting on 11/10.

The 27 MB ZIP file contains the .pptx file, two videos (stand-along and
log-integrated operation) and a README file.

Anyone is welcome to cut/copy/plagiarize as they require. Corrections
and comments would be appreciated - direct to my email address.
