[Elecraft] (LONG) Run For The Bacon 2006 Results
Wow! It's been quite a year! First and foremost, thanks to every single one of you who have participated in the Flying Pigs monthly Run For The Bacon Sprint. The only way I can guage participation is when the participants use the Autolog; or send me their logs via e-mail or snail mail. I know from month to month there were a few individuals that participated that did NOT send in their scores. So the actual figures are slightly better than I can report. But from what I have, I can tell you that in 12 Sprints, we had 421 entries recorded throughout the year; for an average of 35 participants per month. Not too shabby! Before I announce the top winners for the year, here are December's results: Taking First Place was Bill, K1EV with 816 points. Second place for December is awarded to Greg, K4KO, while Third Place is awarded to Barry K4CZ. Dick finished in 1st place twice and in all his top three finishes, Dick accumulated 12,769 points. Third Place finisher for the year goes to Bob Patten N4BP. Bob also placed 1st twice; and in all his top 3 finishes for they year, he accumulated 9,756 points. There will also be Certificates of Achievement given to those who participated in at least 10 of the 12 RFTBs. You folks will be receiving your certificates in January. Re: [Elecraft] who does the work in QRP?
I agree with Ron, 1000% Unless you sign /QRP, how is a station to know you are QRP? There are so many variables . propagation, antennas, location, height above sea level, etc.. Let's say the station doing the listening is in California. Your 5 Watts in Georgia may be a whole ton louder to him than 1000 Watts coming from South Africa. In fact, I've worked guys using 1 or 2 Watts who were 20 over 9 at my receiving location. I would never had known that they were QRP unless they hadn't volunteered the information. Besides, if you really want to cut to the chase, it's ALWAYS the station doing the receiving that is working - NOT the transmitting station. Now if you want to be picky, by definition the term power is equal to an amount of work being done. So it follows that a QRO station is doing more work that a QRP station. But it's not necessarily true that in ALL cases he is going to be louder and easier to hear than a QRP station. The argument is very subjective. -- Larry W2LJ QRP - When you care to send the very least! http://www.w2lj.qrpradio.com http://w2lj.blogspot.com/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] The airwaves will be huming!
Wow! Lots of QRP signals will be flyin' through the air tomorrow (Tuesday) night! There will be both activity from the QRP Foxhunters as well as the NAQCCers! I know a lot of you out there are members of both organizations and will have fun participating in both events. But for those of you who are not; I hope you'll take this opportunity to sample some other fare than what you might be accustomed to! For the Foxhunters - the NAQCC is the North American QRP CW Club; and each month they hold a two hour Sprint. The Sprint tomorrow night will start a half hour before the hunt and will end when the hunt ends. The exchange is simple - RST, S/P/C, and NAQCC #. If you're not an NAQCCer, please give your power instead (followed by the W, of course)! The contest call they use; and that you will hear is CQ NA. Since all NAQCC Sprints are open to everyone, membership in the NAQCC is not necessary. For details on the rules, please check out: http://www.arm-tek.net/~yoel/sprint200612.html For the NAQCCers - tomorrow night is the 80 Meter QRP Foxhunt. Two QRPers act as Foxes and will be on a frequency somewhere between 3.550 and 3.570 MHz. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to grab the Fox pelt. That is, you must have a successfully find the Fox; and then complete two-way QSO with the him. The QSO is an exchange exchange is RST, S/P/C, name and power out. A word of warning! Foxes are sly creatures that usually work split; so even when you find one, odds are you will have to use your wiles to figure out where the Foxes are listening if you want to grab their pelt! If you want to hone your QRP DX operating skills, this is the way to do it! For a complete summary of the rules, please visit: http://www.qrpfoxhunt.org/winter_rules.htm 80 Meters just might get a tad crowded tomorrow night; but with the band assignment changing as of Friday, this is a good thing. So get on the air tomorrow night and have some fun, be courteous, try something new (maybe) and let's show the FCC that CW is indeed NOT DEAD! 73 de Larry W2LJ -- Larry W2LJ QRP - When you care to send the very least! http://www.w2lj.qrpradio.com http://w2lj.blogspot.com/ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] (Long) November RFTB Results
The November RFTB has come and gone. Only one more Sprint for 2006; after which we will name the Top Hog of the Sty for the year. I trust you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving; and that you're all finished with your holiday gift buying and decorating! (Just joshing!) The November RFTB saw the lowest turnout via the Autolog so far this year, with only 31 folks sending in scores. That probably was due to the fact that the ARRL Sweepstakes had finished about an hour or two before we began. I'm sure there were a lot of Piggies who were to pooped to pop into the RFTB. However, I did hear a few folks out there making contacts; but who did not submit scores. If you participate; by all means send in your score. This way we have a good idea who is participating on a regular basis. Next month, the December RFTB winner will receive a special holiday Piggie memento courtesy of Jeff K3OQ; so I hope we see a really big showing! The top three finishers for November were Larry W2LJ with 1080 points to take First Place; followed by John N2UC in Second Place with 689 points. Perry WA8THK rounded out the top three by scoring 310 points for Third Place. I was quite surprised and taken aback to find that I was the top finisher. I am reminded of an old Swiss saying that one of my bosses used to cite quite often, referring to strokes of luck. It is appropriate for an RFTB and especially for me, I guess. Every now and then, even the blind pig finds an acorn. I rarely get an acorn - ever! Here's the tale of the tape: W2LJ 1080 pts. N2UC 0689 pts. WA8THK 0310 pts. K2NPN 0279 pts. N9NE/M 0243 pts. KA2KGP 0222 pts. N1VWD 0200 pts. K4BAI 0184 pts. K4KO 0176 pts. KD2MX 0144 pts. NG7Z 0144 pts. K7TQ 0096 pts. K4NK 0095 pts. K8BTD 0060 pts. WA3RML 0060 pts. KB6NU 0060 pts. W1PID 0040 pts. N1LT 0036 pts. K5GQ 0036 pts. K3OQ 0027 pts. AF4LQ 0027 pts. VE3XT 0012 pts. W9NX 0012 pts. WB8LZG 0008 pts. AA5CH 0003 pts. W9UQB 0003 pts. K6BBQ 0002 pts. WA3OFF pts. N5WVR pts. K6DBG pts. NØJRN pts. I'd like to take this opportunity to especially thank those of you who participate under less than ideal conditions. Folks like myself, who are fortunate to have even very modest suburban backyards tend to forget what a challenge it can be to participate while mobile, or with indoor or compromise antennas due to CCRs and HOAs. Thank you for participating month in and month out. You guys are the best and exemplify the Amateur Spirit of being resourceful and innovative. Re: [Elecraft] K2 / PAC-12
Mark, I use my homebrew PAC-12 with my K1. It works very well and I am happy with it. I've used it for various QRP-ARCI Sprints; as well as Field Day 2005. Of course, it's not a full sized dipole up 50 feet in the air; and it's not a Yagi on a 50 foot tower. That all being said, it does a respectable job for itself. It is lightweight, ultra portable and easy to set up and tear down. I never have problems making QSOs when I use it; and in a few instances, it has saved my bacon, allowing me to make contacts during a few amateur radio demonstrations that I have given. I think the homebrew version cost me all of about 20 bucks or less in materials. Fabrication was easy. I've seen the commercial version and it looks sharp. When I am out doing portable ops, my antennas of choice (away from the vehicle) are the PAC-12 and the NorCal Doublet. When trees are non-existent, the PAC-12 is THE way to go, IMHO. Re: [Elecraft] Re: K1 construction time
No, actually, I think 30 hours is just about right. If you're an electronics assembler for a living, it might take a bit less; but 30 hours is just about what I spent on mine. Of course, I double check everything before soldering; and I solder each component one at a time. I figure that a) I don't want to see any smoke and b) if I have to troubleshoot, at least let it be for something that wasn't my stupid mistake! After all, the goal is to end up with a working radio; not to end up with a working radio in the shortest amount of time! [Elecraft] July RFTB Announcement
I'm back from vacation and raring to go (radio-wise, that is)! The place my family stays at up in Lake George, NY is beautiful; but sadly, it's pretty much an RF black hole. So my brass poundin' fingers are itching and all set to go. Fortunately, this Sunday night will be the July RFTB. This Sunday evening, the Flying Pigs Amateur Radio Club International will be holding its monthly Run For The Bacon. This is a friendly, two hour QRP CW Sprint, which is open to ALL radio amateurs, will last from 9:00 - 11:00PM EDT (0200-0400 UTC Monday). You may work stations once per band on 160, 80, 40, 20, 15 or 10 Meters. Suggested starting frequencies are 1.812, 3.562, 7.044, 14.062, 21.062, and 28.062 MHz. The exchange is RST, S/P/C (State, Province, Country) and Flying Pigs membership number. If you're not a member of the Flying Pigs, and would like to be; then please click on the membership hyperlink on http://www.fpqrp.com/. Otherwise, non-members can just use their output power figure. You can report your score via the Autolog page which can be found at :http://www.fpqrp.com/fpqrprun.html; or you can mail your logs to the address given on the Autolog page. The deadline for logs is July 22nd at 2400 UTC. As like last month, the top three scorers will win a certificate. Keep in mind that anyone who participates in 10 out of 12 RFTBs this year will earn a special Certificate of Merit at the end of the year. So please use the Autolog if you've participated; but were unfortunate enough to make any contacts. In this case, trying helps! [Elecraft] Congrats Kudos
A tip o' the cap; and a friendly slap on the back to Don Nesbitt N4HH and Rich Homolya N4EX. Don has qualified for; and has been issued Elecraft DX Chaser Award number 14. Don used all kinds of weapons to achieve this certificate! This Ham has a virtual arsenal and should be considered (in the nicest way possible) a weapon of mass communication! Don used K2 #2028, K2 #5196, K1 #1456 and KX1 #417. Don's aerials of choice were a 20 Meter Delta Loop and a 40 Meter ladderline fed inverted Vee. All this, along with his consummate skill netted him 211 countries with his Elecraft rigs. Throughout his Ham career, Don has accumulated 345 DXCC entities. Rich has qualified for; and has been issued Elecraft Worked All States Award number 46. In just a year, Rich has used his K1 to work all the states in our great nation AND 178 different DX countries. All I can say, is that I have LONG way to go to catch up to these two fine individuals. A special thanks to Eric, Wayne and all the fine folks at Elecraft who sponsor these awards. For a look at who has earned what; and who is in the Elecraft Awards Hall of Fame; please check out: http://www.qsl.net/w2lj/index%20page%2011.html 73 de Larry W2LJ Elecraft Awards Admin Guy ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Elecraft Awards Program
I should post this more often as Wayne and Eric are like the Pied Piper. There are more and more new Elecrafters joining the family every day; and I forget that a lot of the newer members are not aware of the Elecraft Awards Program. For details, please visit: http://www.qsl.net/w2lj/index%20page%2010.html The basic info is that there are currently six awards that you can work towards using your Elecraft rig. The easiest is the Elecraft Ragchewer's Award. Use your KX-1, K1 or K2 and have a QSO that last longer than 30 minutes; and you qualify. How easy is that? The Elecraft Century Club. You earn this by using your Elecraft rig to have QSOs with 100 different other Elecrafters who are using their Elecraft rigs. You keep track of their callsign, rig model and serial number. The Elecraft Worked All States Award. Work all 50 United States using your Elecraft rig. The 50 in 50 Award. This is the Elecraft Worked All States Award on steroids. Work all 50 United States; but this time each Ham that you are QSOing with must be using an Elecraft rig. Only one amateur, KØZK has earned this award so far. How long will it take to issue certificate number 2? It's been 15 months so far! The DX Chaser Award - submit proof (log) of having worked 100 or more different DXCC entities using your Elecraft rig. Endorsements will be made for 200, 300 and ultimately Honor Roll status. The 100 in 100 Award. This is the DX Chaser Award pumped up. Work 100 DXCC entities; but this time the Ham you have QSOed with must have been using an Elecraft rig, also. This award will probably be the ultimate and the hardest to achieve . for now. But I have a feeling that as we give Wayne and Eric more and more time to sell more Elecraft transceivers around the world; that this pinnacle will be reached sooner rather than later! 73 es good DX! Guys, About a year ago I built a KPA100, fully intending to turn my K2 into a K2/100. It hasn't happened and I doubt it's going to any time soon. I am very, very happy being a QRP station! So it sits there in the box, going unused, which seems a shame. So .. I have for sale this unbuilt KPA100 in it's original packaging, which I have to open because there's a 160 Meter module in there that I do want to keep. It sells for $369.00 from Wayne and Eric. I'll let this one go for 10% (or thereabouts) off. $330.00 plus UPS Ground shipping to your door (Sorry, USA only). [Elecraft] Praise for Amateur Radio
The following is from the CQ-News reflector: Thanks to Rich Moseson, W2VU! From the CQ Newsroom… The White House today released its review of the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, which, according to a statement, identifies the systemic problems in Federal emergency preparedness and response revealed by Hurricane Katrina - and the best solutions to address them. The report included 17 lessons the Executive Branch learned after reviewing and analyzing the response to Katrina; made 125 specific recommendations to the President, and identified 11 critical actions to be completed before the first day of the 2006 hurricane season. The report also included a section titled, What Went Right in the Katrina response, which singled out amateur radio operators for particular praise: *Other organizations worked tirelessly to assist emergency responders that, due to the storm, did not have the equipment and means to effectively carry out their duties. Amateur Radio Operators from both the Amateur Radio Emergency Service and the American Radio Relay League, monitored distress calls and rerouted emergency requests for assistance throughout the U.S. until messages were received by emergency response personnel. A distress call made from a cell phone on a rooftop in New Orleans to Baton Rouge was relayed, via ham radio, from Louisiana to Oregon, then Utah, and finally back to emergency personnel in Louisiana, who rescued the 15 stranded victims. Ham radio operators voluntarily manned the amateur radio stations at sites such as the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Watch Net, Waterway Net, Skywarn and the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network. * Finally, the report identified three immediate priorities: 1) Implementing a comprehensive National Preparedness System to make certain that we have a fully national system that ensures unity of effort in preparing for and responding to natural and man-made disasters; 2) Creating a Culture of Preparedness that emphasizes that the entire Nation - at all levels of government, the private sector, communities, and individual citizens - shares common goals and responsibilities for homeland security; and 3) Implement corrective actions to ensure we do not repeat the problems encountered during Hurricane Katrina. A White House fact sheet summarizing the report is available online at http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/02/20060223.html. (Tnx CQ Public Service Editor Bob Josuweit, WA3PZO) The full report is also available online at http://www.whitehouse.gov/reports/katrina-lessons-learned/. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. To me it seems that if you don't spend too much time concentrating on what you think are deficiencies; but go out with the aim to just have fun, then you will be amazed at what you can accomplish! 73 de Larry W2LJ K1# 1647, K2# 4090 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] the fine line between stupid and curious
Two events in my life caused me to have a healthy respect for electricity. The first occurred when I was 5 or 6 years old. I was home from school with the flu; and I remember that it must have been a particularly bad spell as Mom had a vaporizer going in my room. One morning as I was getting better, she told me to unplug it for the daytime. I pulled on the plug (not the wire!) and pulled and pulled and pulled; but it wouldn't budge. Being somewhat mechanically minded, I decided I needed a lever to pry it out. My sister's letter opener seemed like just the ticket. Boy, the house went dark real fast, the letter opener vaporized and I nearly messed myself! Dad was NOT happy with having to come home from work to change out the fuse in the fuse box! The second incident came at where I work now. Since incident number 1 above, I had always had a healthy respect for electricity. I repair professional photographic studio equipment for a living and am always in contact with stroboscopic packs which can deliver a flash up to 3200 Joules. Needless to day, I'm always very careful. Then came the one day that I started to repair a flash head that a photographer tried to fix himself - couldn't; but didn't tell me that he tried! I hooked up the head to a pack, held it in my hand and fired it. Normally, the housing is grounded. He had mistakenly wired hot to the housing. I think I threw that flash head across the room with enough force to throw it through the wall! My arm was numb for about 15 minutes; and after that, I always gave things a visual going over before trying them out. I still have a healthy respect for electricity and an even healthier respect for the fact that someone else's mistakes might cause me grave danger! 73 de Larry W2LJ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] k2 offset frequency, and FISTS
Mark, I never call CQ FISTS unless it's a FISTS contest; and that may be what you heard. When there's a contest going on, everyone has to spread out a bit. Mosts FISTS will QSO with anyone, whether they're a FISTS member or not, Heck, it's a good recruitment tool! Unfortunately, I have heard of instances where fellow FISTS, hellbent on collecting FISTS numbers, have refused and have only hurriedly QSOd with a non-member. Fortunately, I can count the number of times I have heard this on the fingers of one hand. For the most part, the folks I know from FISTS are 'salt of the earth types of folks and will QRS to a slower speed, if you need. 73 de Larry W2LJ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
