[Elecraft] K3 users with SteppIR interface

2017-05-25 Thread Larry Wassmann
Ok, guys, I will be getting a new 3 element SteppIR soon. I have a K3 and a P3.
I want to use the SteppIR interface to have the antenna track frequencies as I
turn the dial. I used to do this on my old Pro 3 with the SteppIR I had about 4
years ago. As I understand it, you connect the SteppIR interface cable to the 9
pin port on the back of the K3. Problem is that I use Ham Radio Delux and there
is already a cable from the computer to the K3 using that port. I would like to
continue to use HRD but would also like to use the SteppIR interface. Am I
between a rock and a hard place? Any help, anyone already solved this problem?

[Elecraft] K3 Shack Pictures and iMacs

2014-05-02 Thread Larry Wassmann
They are now prescribing what my eye doc called office or computer glasses that
are just for sitting in front of a computer screen while working. I got a pair
and they are just great. No more eye or neck problems. Ask for a pair next time
you are at your eye doctors office you won’t be sorry.

[Elecraft] low end response

2014-05-01 Thread Larry Wassmann
The K3 will put out good clean audio from about 80Hz to a little over 4K.
Transmit audio is just great. Receive audio is another story.

[Elecraft] My last words on Skinny Receive audio

2014-04-28 Thread Larry Wassmann
I was the one who asked what I thought was a simple and logical question about
the receive audio bandpass of the K3. Now after having page after page of
lecturing me and others about the evils of ESSB, I am sorry for asking and
disappointed in many of your responses to my question.

Elecraft offers an ESSB filter. In the manual it tells you how to set the rig
up for ESSB. Both the receive and transmit EQs have frequencies all along the
4K range. So I was kind of shocked to hear that in many of your minds, ESSB is
a dirty word and that you would go out of your way to attack someone who asks a
question about the ESSB capabilities like me.

There were 4 gentlemen who looked up my email address and sent me advice and
helpful hints but commented that what I am looking for is not currently
possible on the K3. They also advised me to disregard the blowhards who like to
hang out on the reflector and apologized for them.

I am disappointed that the K3 apparently can not match the transmit band pass
in the receiver without attenuation. The newer Yaesu rigs can. All of the Flex
rigs can. The Anon can. The new (kit like) SDR rigs can, and even the new
Kenwood 990 can faithfully match the receive and transmit band pass. It is
embarrassing to me to have them receive my signal, record it and play it back
accurately while I can not do the same for them on my K3.

When I ordered the K3 I spoke to one of the technicians there at Elecraft and
was assured after describing what I wanted to do with the K3 that it could meet
and in fact exceed my audio needs. Apparently he miss understood or miss quoted
the capabilities of the K3 unintentionally.

I will be posting my evaluation of the K3 audio in the appropriate places and
advise those who are interested in quality audio to look someplace else. The
apparent advertised ESSB features are really not there and to not waste your
money and time with the rig if that is your interest.

Go ahead bash me and ESSB some more.

[Elecraft] Is there a reason the receive is so Skinny

2014-04-27 Thread Larry Wassmann
I am sorry now that I asked what I thought was a reasonable question. Looking
for some help. But I guess most just wanted to vent their particular bias and
dislike for other hams having fun doing what they want to do with their K3s.
Why does Elecraft offer what they call a ESSB filter? Why do almost all new
rigs come with EQs now? Do you think any of us audio guys had any influence?
True thanks for those who sent me mail giving me real help and not just bash me
and other who enjoy sounding like men not some little girl with her panties too
tight.

[Elecraft] Is there a reason the receive is so Skinny

2014-04-27 Thread Larry Wassmann
Joe W4TV

Joe maybe you can tell me where I am going wrong then. I use the 6K ESSB filter
and have the K3 set up for 4K transmission. When I, and other look at my signal
I am in fact transmitting out to 4K when measured on a spectrum analyzers. But
when I look at signals myself on my receiver band pass display on the SA, all I
can see is signals out to about 3.5 or a little better. I have the center
frequency set at *155. I was told that is what it is supposed to be set at. If
I move the center frequency up to 200Hz yes I can receive up to 4K but the
bottom end amplitude is way down and when I try to play that audio back via the
DVR everyone says they have lost their bottom end. What am I doing wrong? Are
there other filters I should be using. I or none of the other guys I know how
to set up the K3 to faithfully capture receive audio and play it back with
frequencies below 200Hz, so if you know how to maintain the same amplitude of
signal on the receive low end that matches the transmi
tted low end, we would really appreciate it. Thanks.

[Elecraft] Is there a reason the receive is so Skinny

2014-04-25 Thread Larry Wassmann
How come we can transmit out to 4K but can only receive to about 3.5K. Seems
strange to me. I would like to hear as wide as I can transmit. Yes I know I can
shift the center frequency, but by doing that the low end is diminished and I
don’t like that either. Couldn’t this be done in a future DSP update. Just
wishing.

[Elecraft] Root of problems

2014-02-10 Thread Larry Wassmann
I agree with Don W3FPR here. I subscribe to several boards like this and I am
finding the same thing. The problems hams are having in general have very
little to do with the actual product, but how the ham is interfacing with it.
It also seems to me that in this board and others like the HRD board, that the
majority of reported problems have something to do with the digital modes. I am
always amazed that a ham will go out and buy the latest rig, tower, anteannas,
and such and try to run it all on a peanut whistle computer. Believe me when I
say after spending my life working with computers everyday, there are a bunch
of hams who should not be left alone in a room with a computer. 😊

73 OZ W3OZ

Mike,

I believe if you carefully examine the reports of "hiccups, bumps, and
whatever", you will find that many (if not most) of them are the result
of computer setup with the various logging and rig control applications
that users attempt to set up or use with the K3. Another area of
frequent "problem reports" is connections to a digital interface of some
sort.

These are not K3 problems, but problems users have had setting up and
using those applications and accessories and the computer problems which
result.

The K3 has wisely chosen to 'put its computers' (microprocessors) inside
the K3. There are very few real problems with the K3 loaded with
production level firmware. There is no dependency on a variety of
computers coupled with a variety of operating systems. The Utility
programs do need a computer to run, but are normally not needed for
other than firmware loads and saving the configuration. The Utility
programs do provide several user conveniences for things like loading CW
memories more easily than doing it with the K3 alone - use of those
added Utility features is optional and is the user's choice.

The K3 hardware has been quite solid for a long time now.

Yes, there are user questions that come up here frequently that are
easily resolved through questions here on the reflector, and yes if you
look at the problems that are revealed by those who load beta firmware,
you may find some problem reports - but that is what beta firmware is
all about, and only those who are willing to try it and report any
problems should be using a beta version.

73,
Don W3FPR

[Elecraft] About knobs.

2014-01-26 Thread Larry Wassmann
Thanks to Don and Richard for your very complete description and suggestions.
They both were helpful to a new K3 owner who came from the Icom world. I have
to confess to everyone that I wanted and thought that the K3 would transmit and
receive a complete 4kHz bandpass and allow me to record it via the DVR and play
it back. I am one of the ESSB guys and as my Icom rigs were limited to a
receive bandpass of 3.6 and a transmit bandpass of about 3K I had looked
forward to being able to copy and playback some of the other guys on their new
rigs that are at 4K and beyond faithfully.

But apparently the K3 is not able to do that, and for that I am disappointed. I
have the 6kHz filter and selected ESSB and was thinking/hoping that would be a
real 4kHz bandpass both ways, but apparently not. Most males especially older
males have good audio at or below 80Hz and I had wished to capture that along
with their high frequencies. I personally do not want a bandpass beyond 4K but
4K both ways would have done the trick for me. Thanks for your fine help guys I
really appreciate your efforts on my part.

[Elecraft] Question about knobs

2014-01-25 Thread Larry Wassmann
I have a question about the knobs on the K3. I have my knobs on the Shift-Width
position. When I just push the Width knob one time it says HI 3.50 next time I
press the same knob again it says BW 4.00 on the display. I have the FC at
*1.50. Why don’t both times I press the knob say the same thing? I think from
monitoring my signal on Spectra Plus, that I am transmitting at about 4K but
receiving at 3.50 or so. Are my assumptions correct? Or why can I not have both
the BWs at 4K?

I can move the FC to 2.0 and transmit and receive at 4K, but when I try to
record using my DVR, the bottom end of those I record shifts up and I lose the
bottom 200 to 300 Hz. Not what I want to do on a faithful recording.
Strange but probably cockpit problems by me.

Thanks for any help.

[Elecraft] Filter not sticking

2014-01-11 Thread Larry Wassmann

Please excuse me people because I am very new to the Elecraft world. Just got
my K3 7890 on the air and love it so far with the following except. Yes there
is always an except.

I have the following filter in my rig. 6kHz, 2.7kHz and 400 Hz for CW. I am one
of the ESSB guys but I am also a DXer. I have worked them all on the number 1
ARRL DX Honor roll so I don’t want my rig to just do ESSB audio. I enjoy CW as
well. S here is my problem and it is probably my fault because I don’t
understand the K3 architecture yet.

When I have my 6kHz filter in line, all is well. Band width is 4K top at 4K
bottom at 0.00 center frequency is 2.00. As long as I stay there all is well. I
can narrow down my receive and transmit band width by turning the HI/Width knob
counter clockwise and narrow it down that way.

But if I want to use the XFIL to select my second filter the 2.8kHz filter it
will go down to a band width as it should and all is well. Here is the problem.
When I do an XFIL back to the 6kHz filter it has now a center frequency of 1.5
and the band with is now about 3.5K. It does not remember how I had it set up
and I have to manually reconfigure the filter back to how I want it.

It would be nice if I could be talking to my friends at maybe 4K and if some

DX comes on the band I would like to pop to my 2.8kHz filter, work the station,
the go back to my normal chat setup without having to reconfigure it.

Now have any of you who have a 6kHz filter in position 1 and a 2.8kHz filter in
position 2 test and see if your rig stays at 4K with a center frequency staying
where you put it as you go back and forth? If yours does and mine does not,
maybe there is something wrong with my rig or firmware.

Any help here? Thanks

[Elecraft] K3 port?

2013-12-30 Thread Larry Wassmann
I am in the process of building my K3. So I am not an expert, but I am getting
close to completing the build and all is going well except I was missing one of
the Anderson power pole clips and they are sending another so I am on hold.
This pause gave me more time to read the construction and owners manual over
again for maybe the 10th time

Here is my question. What is the port on the bottom front of the K3? I have not
found any reference to it and was wondering. Looks like a connection to network
the K3 but that is a guess. Any help?
