[Elecraft] Elecraft Amps

2010-02-11 Thread lawrence libsch
Group -

For those who believe Elecraft can't compete in the amp market, I ask you
to consider the market into which Elecraft introduced the K3. Now almost 4000
of us have sold or retired other high quality transceivers for the K3.
It's excellent that many K3 owners already have quality amps that function
well for them. Many of us, however would like to purchase an amp from Elecraft
with true K3 compatribility and the kind of quality and service advantages that
Elecraft has brought to the K3.

A watt is a  watt is a watt and it is very difficult to

conceive an amp that is going to be  so superior (as the K3 is to every

other XVCR) that someone will give up what  they have to get one.  What
would
you add to, or do different from, what is  already available?

I don't think this is a relevant question. How many K3 owners could have listed
the superior qualities of the K3 in answer to a similar question about a new
transceiver prior to the introduction of the K3?

How many K3/K2 owners are even in the market for  an amp?

How many current K3 owners were in the market for a K3 when the K3 was
introduced? And purchasers of a new Elecrft amp need not come only from the
ranks of K2/K3 owners.

Re: [Elecraft] What became of the Elecraft's KPA1500 and KPA 800

2010-02-08 Thread Lawrence Libsch
Frankly, It seems to me that good QRO amps are a glut on the market. (see
THP, etc.)

To be competitive in that market, any Elecraft offering would have to be
highly innovative and I just don't see much more that can be done.

Gotta disagree with this comment. There is no Elecraft-quality amp kit on the
market, indeed, maybe no 800, 1500 watt kits at all. But there are now almost
4000 K3 owners, many looking for amps with straight forward K3 hookups and
compatibility with the K3. If you don't think hookup and compatibility of amps
with the K3 are not an issue, you're not following the reflector. Furthermore
no one competes with Elecraft on customer service. Again this reflector clearly
demonstrates lots of interest in Elecraft amps.

IMO, QRO is much more important than all these trivial little toys
they are building now. I have a much more pressing need for a KPA- than
I do a panadapter (with limited features) and a wattmeter. I have a very nice
panadapter that has rig control from the computer, and it didn't cost
700 bucks, and I can control it with the MOUSE

Gotta agree with this. Elecraft got left in the dust with their panadapter.
For $25, I built a Softrock for Elecraft K3
that runs Power SDR If you don't want to.build a Softrock, buy an LP Pan for
about $200. Again you can run Power SDR. Either way creates an inexpensive
panadapter that provides an amazing visual display significantly larger than
the P3 proposes. It provides 2 RX VFOs, even if your K3 has no subreceiver. It
provides point and click mouse tuning. And it provides entry to the world of
SDR. Elecraft's P3 apparently will not have I and Q jacks. This means no
adventures in SDR land for the folks who buy it. It's clear SDR will have a
significant role in the future of radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - PowerSDR-IF communication issue

2009-12-16 Thread Lawrence Libsch
Bill -

My setup is K3, Clifton Labs buffer amp, EM0202. It wasn't plug and play
for me, but it works great now. I found the info in Larry Phipps manual for
setup and config of PSDR-IF extremely helpful. It's found on the Telepost Home
page http://www.telepostinc.com/ Scroll down the home page to Setup and
Config manual for PowerSDR-IF v1.19 / LP-Bridge v0.9976 betas - and open the
.pdf. Larry's instructions assume you will be using the LP Pan instead of a
Softrock, so your global offset and center frequency entered in the the Setup
IF / IF Frequencies tab will be different than what he suggests. I use a
global offset of -1710 and a center frequency of 8193500. Make sure you use the
patched version of PSDR-IF v 1.19.0.2 ( I can email it to you) Some believe a
USB to serial cable with FTDI chip will prevent some problems. Would be glad to
work with you by phone if you want.

Re: [Elecraft] LP-Bridge Question

2009-12-10 Thread Lawrence Libsch
Lee -

LP Bridge is spectacular. It allows multiple software programs to interact
simultaneously with the K3. It is stable, has an excellent manual, an active
reflector (Yahoo Groups LP Pan), and excellent and immediate phone support from
its author Larry Phipps. I have used LP Bridge with N1MM for several RTTY
contests. It never faltered. It is totally transparent.
In addition to allowing multiple software programs - maybe N1MM and
Skimmer- to run simultaneously and bidirectionally contol the K3, it opens the
possibility of a panadapter simultaneously running PowerSDR-IF from the K3 IF.
PowerSDR's visual display provides lots of possibilities - see all the activity
on the band at once, point and click tuning on dual VFOs if you want them,
visibly adjust filters, band stacking registers, and more. LP Bridge is free.
The panadapter can be implemented with Larry Phipps LP Pan, $220 built or $175
kit last I looked, or with a Softrock LiteII for K3 for less than $20. I use
the Softrock.
I have no commercial interest in LP Bridge or LP Pan. Stuff this good
deserves recognition.

Re: [Elecraft] SoftRock Lite 6.2 for K3 Panadapter

Julian -

I have built and have been using a Softrock Lite II for K3 IF and a Z1
buffer amp as a panadapter for my K3. The crystal is 32.768 MHz. It's
oustanding with LP Bridge and PowerSDR-IF.

[Elecraft] K3: Help with K3 and Softrock IF - Poor audio using PSDR/IF as panadapter

2009-10-19 Thread Lawrence Libsch
When running PowerSDR/IF as a panadapter with my Softrock IF, I am
unable to get the audio out of my soundcard to sound right. It sounds as though
I am tuned either off frequency on the low side or off frequency on the high
side. The complete setup is: K3 without mod for IF for LP Pan, Z1 buffer
amp set up for K3, EM 0202 USB, Lenovo T61 laptop running WIN XP Pro SP2, LP
Bridge v 0.9.86, Power SDR/IF v 0.92.

I see a good trace on the PSDR panadapter. When I tune to a 20 m
sideband frequency where there is a signal, and listen to both the K3 speaker
audio and the EMU audio from headphones plugged into the headphone speaker
jack, the signals I hear from the EMU are clearly the same audio as from the K3
on that frequency. But they aren't clear. I can't copy them. The EMU sounds
like it is mis-tuned. I have carefully adjusted the Global frequency offset so
that the frequency peak of WWV at 15 Mhz falls precisely at 15 Mhz on the
zoomed panadapter trace. I have tried changing the global frequency offset both
up and down. This does not correct the problem.

Help please.

my Softrock SDR radio. Good propagation and a good antenna and patience help. GL

[Elecraft] K3: Firmware 3.03 - How do I store and retrieve ATU settings for two different antennas?

2009-03-20 Thread Lawrence Libsch
Hello All -

I use my K3 in two locations with two different antennas. I have installed
firmware v 3.03. Is it possible to save and retrieve antenna settings for more
than one antenna? If so, how?

[Elecraft] K3 and HRD - can't connect

2008-10-10 Thread Lawrence Libsch
Thank you Iain and Dick. The serial connection from my laptop to the K3
is now working properly. I tried changing COM ports and port settings without
success. Then I shut down the computer, unplugged the two USB devices,
restarted the computer, reattached the USB to serial cable and all is well.

[Elecraft] K3 and HRD - can't connect

2008-10-09 Thread Lawrence Libsch
I am attempting to connect to my K3 with HRD. I am using the Elecraft USB
to serial port to connect them. The USB to serial port connector is on COM 9,
has the latest drivers and has been successfully used to install K3 firmware v
4.26. HRD will not let me choose COM 9. COM 3, which HRD wants is said to be in
use when I look at the possibility of changing to COM3. The K3, the port and
HRD are all set for 38400 baud. Using auto-select for the COM port selection,
HRD finds port 3 and fails to connect giving the error messages frrquency =0
and K3 COM3 38400 Failed to read frequency.

Ideas please?

[Elecraft] K3 Connection to PC for HRD

2008-10-08 Thread Lawrence Libsch
I would like to try HRD for digital modes, logging and rig control for my
newly built K3. (Great Kit. Great Instructions. Great radio.) I own an Elecraft
USB to Serial port cable. I own an EMU 0202 sound card. I am using a Lenovo T61
laptop. I would like to continue using DXBase logging software, in HRD if
possible. I have these questions:

Do I want to use the EMU 0202 to connect the K3 to the PC for HRD?

If I do want to use the EMU, what cables do I want to use and how do I
connect them?

If the EMU 2nd sound card provides no advantage and I omit it, what
cables
do I need and how do I connect them?

With HRD do I need VOX or PTT to control transmit in digital modes? If
so, how do Icable for this?

Will I be able to run digital modes and DXBase logging software
simultaneously from inside
HRD?

Thanks, Larry, KG4LCF___
