[Elecraft] [K3] CW decode not working

2008-06-28 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
I just finished assembling my new K3 s/n 1113. Now playing with it and trying
out some features.

The firmware is 2.02.

I tried CW text decode function, setting it up as shown om P. 31 in the
manual.

I get no decoded text on the display.

Also tried RTTY decode. AFSK A and also no decoded text.

What do I do wrong?

RE: [Elecraft] CW Secrets of the Masters

2008-03-13 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
Disclamer: I am a very bad CW operator :-(

But I discovered that my K2, had a rather limited low freq audio
response. So I took a look at the schematic for the audio circuit in the
K2...

The original low freq. cutoff (-3db) freq. is approx. 640Hz (with KAF or
DSP moduls installed) or 400Hz (with no audio moduls) determined by C25,
C26 and the 5kOhm volume control (and NE612 mixer impedance), to extend
the audio frequency response for the low freq. I put
0.1uF SMD across C25 and C26, extending the low frequency response to
approx. 320Hz. This improves the SSB sound of the receiver, and improves
SNR when copying low pitch CW signals. This simple mod increases the rx
audio signal at 300 Hz by about 3dB.

This could help those copying low pitch CW signals.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB adjustment

2007-11-30 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
All K2'ers

When aligning SSB filters be ware of the low freq cutoff in the audio
chain if you are measuring across the loudspeaker terminals.

The original RX audio low freq. cutoff (-3db) freq. is approx. 640Hz
(with KAF or DSP moduls installed)
or 400Hz (with no audio moduls). The cutoff is
determined by C25, C26 (on the control board) and the 5kOhm volume control pot
(and NE612 mixer output impedance with no audio moduls),

C25 and C26 are 0.1uF each and in series with the vol pot which is 5k.
This is a high pass filter with abt 640Hz cutoff.
So if you are using Spectrogram og Baudline to adjust the low freq
points, you will not get the correct setting if you do not know this.

To improve the RX low freq range you should change C25 and C26 to 0.22 or
0.33 uF. This affects only the RX audio, and it makes the SSB sound better.

In my K2 I put 0.1uF SMD's across C25 and C26, extending the low frequency
response to approx. 320Hz.
It also helps with SNR when copying low pitch CW signals.

[Elecraft] K2 -- RX audio

2007-10-31 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
Hi

While trying to improve the K2 RX audio response specially for SSB,
I noticed lack of low frequencies, looking at the schematics I find
the the LP cutoff is abt 640 Hz, determined by C25, C26 and the 5k vol
pot ( this is wheather using DSP or not).
By increasing C25 and C26 to 0.2uF (from 0.1uF) the LP cutoff is
moved to abt 320 Hz. This makes better sounding SSB signals and also helps
in CW mode when copying low pitch signals.

To lower the LP cutoff, I soldered 0.1uF SMD caps across
C25 and C26 on the control board. To my ears K2 now sounds better.

I got my K2 in the middle of 2001, KPA100 in late 2002,
now mostly use SSB and 100W, (after mars 2005 sometimes 1kW)
Antennas dipole, vertical

Results:
QSO's: 6181 From {17 Feb 2001} to {11 Mar 2007}
Countries: 219, SSB: 208, CW: 123

Now I use the 2.4kHz SSB filter,

No problem using qrp, 15w during the first years, specially on the high
bands. Now as we are in the bottom of the sunspot cycle,
I have to use the kW linear, specially on 40 and 80

2007-03-15 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson

As Don indicated, one can use indirect measurements to measure
the R and X components of an antenna,

If you have a KAT100, you already have all what is needed to make
a good antenna analyzer.
Just push TUNE and let the KAT100 find a match, then
read out the L and C values from the KAT.

I have not worked out how to read out the L and C from the KAT100,
but it should be easy to make a simple program which reads them and
the frequency and displays the actual R and X, with sign.

I have used the KAT100 to measure the SWR of an antenna, just connect
a 50 Ohm dummy load and push TUNE, then connect the antenna,
and set the output level to 1 og 2 Watts, and key the K2 in CW mode,
the SWR leads will show the antenna SWR (the range from 1:1 to 1:5),

RE: [Elecraft] Re: MFJ259

2007-03-15 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
I read the KAT100 manual :-)

This is how you do:
Push TUNE and let the KAT100 find a good tune, preferable 1:1.

To read the L, C and NET( Cin/Cout) just push MENU and select ATU,
then scroll until you see Lxx.x uH and Cx.xx pF and NETx 1=Cin, 2=Cout,
note the frequency and you have all you need to work out the
actual antenna parameters, well these are the complementary values,
needed to get a 50 Ohm match.

If you have a computer connected to your K2, it is trivial to make
a small program which reads the ATU parameters and FREQ and
calculates the actual R, X for the antenna.

You can even let the program scan the band(s) (you can use CW on
all bands, except 60m) and get a graph of the antenna parameters.

But remember you can not transmit outside the hambands

Possibly I will try this out, writing a small TCL program,

but I have the VK5JST aerial analyzer which works well,
it took only abt a week, to get the kit from VK land to TF,
total cost incl post abt U$100.

[Elecraft] KAT100 as antenna analyzer

2007-03-15 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
Hi

Regarding the use of KAT100 as an antenna analyzer:

As you can read the L and C from the KAT100, and the configuration
Cin/Cout, it should be easy to incorporate into the KAT100 software
code routinges to calculate the actual R and X of the load/antenna.
These could then be display via K2 ATU Menu.
That is if there is place in the KAT100 PIC for more software
I guess the Freq is already read in to KAT from the K2,
so all the parameters should be there.

This would of course not work if the KAT100 is connected via
transmission line to the antenna, unless you know the length and
impedance of the line and transform the results.

73
Matti

ps. I made a simple TCL routine to read from the KAT100 on my K2,
using the serial interface

Used SWxx; commands to simulate pushing the menu button etc, FA
   to read the frequency.

Here is the RAW output from FA and DS commands, and menu values:

FREQ: FA3505580; 3505.580kHz
SWR: [EMAIL PROTECTED]I; 1.1-1

[Elecraft] BFO oscillator level

2007-03-11 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson

I did some measurements on the BFO output level on my K2 #2024.
On U11 pin 6, I measured LSB: 596mV RMS, USB: 727mV RMS, CW: 577mV RMS, using
the RF probe and a DVM.

There has always been some BFO leakage into the AGC circuit. When I
adjust the S-meter LOW for 1 led lit on LSB, two leds will lit up on
USB, (40m band), I suspect this is caused by some leakage from the BFO osc,
beeing a little more on USB than on LSB.

Is there a simple way to reduce (or equalize) the BFO osc level, say by half?
It would still be within specs (see page 11 Appendix E, on manual)
Best if the BFO level would not change when the BFO freq is changed.

2007-03-11 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
Thanks Don and Jack for the info,

Don,
I did ground Xtals X3 and X4 at the base (they where grounded on the top),
flush cut all leads on the mixer and if amp circuits. No change.

Both LSB and USB lit 1 led when I turn the K2 on, and then after abt 5
min, then on USB the second led will turn on, but on LSB no change.
Maybe this indicates a bad IC, either the mixer or if amp?

Jack,
I guess that not all K2 are born equal, as you mention the BFO
leakage varying up to 10dB, between rigs. Probably some 602 and 1350 have
better (higher) revese isolation than others.

This BFO leakage is not a big issue for me, just a little annoying.

Regaring the clicks.

-Original Message-
I am hesitant to put this question up here because I have seen so many
posts about it but here goes anyway. I love my K2 sn 05834 except for
one thing...the sidetone. There seems to be excessive thumps (clicks?)
on both make and break, especially when using the internal speaker. I
know there were alot of comments about the sine wave improvements, but
has anyone been able to eleiminate or reduce significantly the thumps?

Do the clicks disappear when the RF-gain is turned down?

If so the clicks have nothing to do with the sidetone, but rather
the muting circuit. This is my experience after the (tf3ma) sidetone mod.

The muting circuit is cutting of the audio noise/signal abruptly creating
the clicks, solution would be to smoothing the turn off/on of
the muting fets (RC filter in the gate circuit).

just my $0.02

[Elecraft] KPA100 spurs

2006-07-27 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
Hi

I just installed a new X1 XTAL 18.432, as a part of upgrading
the KPA100. I used components obtained locally.
Stability of KPA100 is improved, at least it stopped oscillating
on 17m band when I use SSB.

But Now I find lots of spurs.

Here is a list:

18.080, 21.415, 24.903, 24.984, 28.015, 28.260, 28.671, 29.314

these are definetly from X1 as the freq shifts when PA is turned on
by setting the power 10w.

Any suggestions

[Elecraft] OP1 and CW filter gain difference?

2005-04-08 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
Hi All

I was measuring the gain difference of the OP1 x-tal filter and the
CW filter on my K2.

It seems that the OP1 filter has +10dB more gain than the CW filter
I have the 2.5kHz OP1 filter mod and the stock CW filter on 2.4kHz.
Measurements are done on 7 MHz band on LSB.

I did the measurements with AGC off, using noise gen and audio
spectrum analyzer.

Is this normal?

Should I look for some bad X-tals or varicaps in the CW filter?

73 de TF3MA

PS. same results if I unmodule the KSB2, the gain is still low.

RE: [Elecraft] OP1 and CW filter gain difference, solved

2005-04-08 Thread Marteinn Sverrisson
Thanks all

I checked T7, it is OK, so are the varcaps. My K2 seems OK

I fiddled with the CW filter settings, changed the BW and it does indeed
show the expected behavior, to much bandwidth 1kHz, to little bandwidth
200 Hz did show lower filter gain, so I just selected BWs which
do not have as much attenuation of the signals as before,
now the CW filter loss is abt 3 to 6dB rel to the OP1.

I can live with that :-).
