Re: [Elecraft] Fool proof kill switch = deadman timer?

2017-05-29 Thread Michael Adams
I have my cable modem and router on a UPS.

However, I parsed the initial request as something different: even with my UPS,
sometimes my cable modem connection drops; and sometimes my router gets wonky
for unknown reasons, and a reset is required to clear the situation.

An ideal kill switch would be able to test for connectivity (to the network at
large, if not to the remote session specifically), and trigger if it's lost and
not-reestablished in a timely manner.

Re: [Elecraft] RM-11708: CW and RTTY users please read

2016-08-21 Thread Michael Adams
Fred:

Re factoid 4: Are you certain that comments seeking a bandwidth restriction on
part of the CW/data subband would be ignored?

In the discussion accompanying the NPRM, the FCC rather explicitly invited
comments as to whether a limitation is appropriate for a portion of the bands,
specific frequencies meriting protection, etc. provided that such were
supported by some technical reasoning

Given that a specific question was asked, I'd think that direct responses to
the specific question would be considered as relevant.

While I'm not schooled in the provisions of the APA, I don't think American
regulatory bureaucracy has yet deteriorated to the point where a federal agency
is required to ignore responses to questions they asked in the development of
regulation.

Actions by the FCC are governed by the Administrative

The matter at hand in NPRM-11708 contains exactly two questions: 1)
Should the symbol rate limit of 300/sec at 97.309(f) be eliminated?; and
2) Should a specified limit of 2.8 KHz occupied bandwidth in the RDS be
imposed?

Those are the ONLY two issues that can be decided in this proceeding.
Any comment/request outside those two issues will be ignored. Folks,

Yes, according to UPU regulations, an IRC purchased in any country may
be redeemed in any other country for one unit of first class (air mail)
postage to any place in the world.

BTW, the lowest cost I've found is Swiss Post at 20 CHF for 20 IRCs.
At current exchange rates (http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/)
that's about $1.05 each!

Re: [Elecraft] Would anyone like to see an all-mode VHF/UHF offering from Elecraft?

2014-01-31 Thread Michael Adams
I agree.

If there were a few HEO birds in the sky, maybe that sliver of the market which
is not happy with either DC-to-daylight rigs or transverters would be large
enough for someone (hopefully Elecraft) to produce such a rig -- I'd love to
have one. But for now

Personally, I'd like to see the continued improvements in the K-line (and
market pressures) lead to a K4 -- say starting with a K3, adding a USB3
interface for CAT control, FSK+CW keying, onboard sound interface, and P3-like
video output, perhaps expanded to dongle-like DC-to-daylight receive. Maybe an
HDMI-out option for external video and sound display, or even (using either
regular Ethernet or Ethernet-over-HDMI) optional integrated remoting.

While I'm OK with 100W out, I wouldn't mind energy being spent on a 200W
option. And yes, maybe support for two or three onboard transverters, perhaps
eventually releasing optional 222, 432, and/or 900MHz modules in addition to
2m, if enough VHF/UHF demand could be found.

Hey, I can dream. :)

Re: [Elecraft] Filter

2013-03-06 Thread Michael Adams
I wondered the same thing this time last year when I was ordering my K3.

If I had to do it again, I would choose:

- the FM filter (in case you want to tx/rx AM or FM). I got the AM filter
(not planning on doing any FM), but now that the firmware supports AM thru
the FM filter...

- the 2.8 filter for SSB. I also have the 1.8 filter, but I find I don't
use it much for phone, even during contests. I do use the filter when
tuning around for RTTY contacts, but I probably would be content with the
2.8 for this usage.

- the 400 filter for CW

- the 250 filter for RTTY & narrower modes in congested conditions.

I went with 8 pole filters mostly because I wasn't getting the second
receiver, but I didn't want to have to worry about crystal-matching if/when
I add it in the future.

Don't forget the BPF if you are in MARS or like listening around away from
the amateur bands.

Re: [Elecraft] KXAT3 Internal Antenna Tuner Question

2013-02-05 Thread Michael Adams
Matt --

I'm not even sure I'd call the lack of memory on the KAT3 on those far-out
frequencies a "problem". For me, at least, it's curiosity and potentially
useful information in the future.

The only time the lack of memory has been inconvenient is when I've joined
SHARES nets in progress (and have to remember to go aside and tune first,
since SHARES tends to be further away from the amateur bands), or when
bouncing around during the Armed Forces Day test.

That's something that I've wondered myself, for similar reasons.

I have noticed that the MARS frequencies closest to the amateur bands (e.g.
low 4MHz) are remembered by the KAT3, while those further outside (e.g.
high 4MHz) are not.

At this point, I know by experience which of the frequencies I regularly
use do/don't need to tuned up. But for those times when I might need to
use other frequencies it could be handy information to have.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 or KX3 on my sailing yacht?

2013-01-21 Thread Michael Adams
FWIW, the utility also does not unlock 27MHz, for hopefully obvious
reasons, although I imagine if you had a documented need to use the few
MARS frequencies in that band, they'd work with you to make that happen.
Also the KBPF3 is required if you're going to operate too far away from the
amateur bands.

One of these days, I'm going to have to remember to write in to see if
there is some documentation about what frequency ranges the KAT3 remembers
its settings for.

Re: [Elecraft] Is the K3 a "fun" radio to operate ?

2013-01-16 Thread Michael Adams
For me, I see three possible elements of fun:

1. Being able to work other stations, without the radio getting in the way
is "fun".
2. Being able to tweak settings, trying different things, is also "fun".
3. Having an aesthetically pleasing display, being able to make
pretty-colored meters move, has an element of "fun" for some.

The K3 excels at #1 and #2. #3 is less important to me. :)

I also have an Icom 7000. It was my first HF rig, and I still have it for
mobile/portable/backup purposes. I enjoy it too (even if the RX isn't as
good as the K3's), but its small size means you have to go digging in menus
to change certain settings...and that in turn means that the radio can get
in the way of making contacts. It's still fun (after you have climbed the
learning curve)...but the fun level is lower as compared to the K3's.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: FSK, AFSK, CW

2012-12-15 Thread Michael Adams
In theory, all you should need to do CW is a straight key or a paddle. :)
(And you can send PSK, FSK RTTY, and AFSK RTTY with a paddle...)

All you should need to do AFSK, soundcard, and computer-keyed CW are a pair
of audio cables and a serial cable.

I have a Navigator Interface, which I acquired for my prior rig, whose K3
assembly adds cable to the ACC port for traditional FSK support.

The Navigator is probably overkill for the K3, but I keep mine in the mix
because I like having a separate sound interface. If I were starting out
fresh, I would go with an (add-on soundcard + sound cables + serial cable +
USB-serial adapter) arrangement for in-the-shack.

One think to keep in mind is that on the K3, the gap between FSK and AFSK
RTTY is narrower than on most rigs. The K3's AFSK mode (as opposed to DATA
for soundcard modes) gets you the dual filters, the on-screen decode, and
the K3 is rated to run AFSK RTTY at full power in that mode. If you have
your audio levels set correctly (ALC meter four bars solid with the fifth
bar flickering) AFSK RTTY should be virtually indistinguishable from FSK
RTTY on the K3.

It's above my paygrade to get into a debate about the merits of FSK over
AFSK on a K3, and I'll admit that I prefer FSK on general principle... but
it's probably reasonable to declare victory once you get AFSK RTTY working.
