[Elecraft] FS: KXB3080 add-on option for the KX1

2009-09-25 Thread Michael Bower
I have a KXB3080 add-on option for the KX1 that I don't plan on
installing. Never installed.

This option adds 80 meters and 30 meters plus general receive up to 16
MHz (if I read it correctly) and scanning.

Asking $65 INCLUDING USPS Priority Mail shipping in the US. Normal
price is $80 plus shipping.

Payment can be check, MO, PayPal. (PayPal please add $2 for their stupid fees.)

Contact me before sending any money though. (PayPal address is not
this address.)

TIA

[Elecraft] Suggested prices?

2019-01-03 Thread Michael Bower
Hi, gang,

We are in the process of downsizing for a future (not scheduled). Can
anyone give me suggestions for prices on the below rigs if I decide to sell
them instead of moving them? I am the original owner and builder of all
three rigs. I am very careful in building but I have also had these rigs
checked by someone with a LOT more experience than me.

1) 2-band K1 with:

   Internal battery
   Internal antenna tuner
   stand.

2) 2-band KX1 with:

  unbuilt internal antenna tuner.

3) K2 with:

   SSB module
   Internal battery
   Unbuilt antenna tuner.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft grey in a rattle can?

2016-07-26 Thread Michael Bower
Many years ago, I had a piece of Heathkit gear that needed a touch up. I
took one of the side panels to Home Depot. They scanned the panel and made
a custom mix that matched perfectly (except the finish).

Maybe taking an Elecraft panel to them would give you the color you need.

[Elecraft] Special Events station K60

2007-09-18 Thread Michael Bower
Special events station K60/CIA is currently operating from the CIA as a
special events station. Well, I don't know if it is RIGHT now but it is
up and running and will be there for several weeks, I think.

Tomorrow marks the 60 anniversary of the creation of the CIA.

This amateur station is the first amateur station to be operated
actually from the CIA grounds.

If I remember correctly, it is operating CW only, 80/40/20/10 and in the
bottom 35 Mhz (?) in the band.

There is (I think) a special commemorative QSL card to be issued.

(I'm sorry I can't be more specific or concrete. I'm typing this from
memory.)

Re: [Elecraft] Re: Hexkey waiting on bench, due to warning

Is that, perhaps, something called "Rug Gripper"? You can get it in
small rolls in most hardware type stores. Initially used to put under
throw rugs on wooden floors. But great for this as well. Can be cut to
size.

get the pad and some nylon feet - no jiggle and no scoot.

Build time approximately 120 hours (that's a rough guess)

LAPSED TIME:

Years - 2.88
Days - 1052

I remember getting this rig on Christmas morning Dec 2002. I also remember

it.

And it is now done. With some great help from N4TVC and N4LRR and some

[Elecraft] SSB kit Rev D. vs Rev E.

2006-07-23 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
Hi, folks,

Well, I've let my SSB kit for my K2 sit long enough. However, I had to look
all over for it and when I found it, I couldn't find the instructions.

Went to the Elecraft website to download and found only Rev E. instructions.

Couple of questions:

1) does anyone have the Rev D. version online? (It's not in Elecrafts
archive that I could find.)

2) Is there that much of a difference? (I might know more today when I try
to inventory based on the old kit but the new manual.)

3) Does anyone know, off hand, what the differences were?

4) Should I get the parts to bring this kit to Rev E. (new kit is $99 but
don't know if they sell an upgrade kit - sort of depends on the
differences.)

TIA

[Elecraft] Option building question

2006-09-18 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
I currently have the bare bones KX1. I also have but have not
built/installed the 3080 kit.

I'm planning on getting/building/installing the ATU.

Question:

Does it matter what order these are done? Should one be done before the
other?

Now that is a cool boat.

(sorry, this starting to go OT but so cool. )

Joe, you should plan this trip for the summer with a special QSL for
contacting you on the boat. That is so neat.

Michael N4NMR

(Also, Joe, please contact me direct. I tried e-mail and your address
doesn't work for me. (sorry for the OT).)

Thanks.

[Elecraft] FS: VIS Study Cards - Extra Class

2005-05-21 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
I have for sale:

VIS Study Cards for Extra Class.

This is a set of study cards for preparing for the Extra Class Element 4
exam. Set consists of 650+ index sized cards (on paper stock) for handy
studying wherever you might be.

They are broken into 9 sections:
(Numbers in parenthis "m of n" means you must pass m questions and there are
n questions in that pool (and that many cards)

Commission's Rules (7 of 99)
Operating Procedures (4 of 46)
Radio Wave Propagation (3 of 34)
Amateur Radio Practice (5 of 68)
Electrical Principles (9 of 111)
Circuit Components (5 of 72)
Practical Circuites (7 of 95)
Signals and Emissions (5 of 69)
Antennas and Feed Lines (5 of 71)

This particular set is (I think) one revision back. The questions are based
on the pool as of 2/01/2000.

Yes, they are out of date but not so far that you couldn't probably pass.
And they make a great aid to studying. I used to carry a handful wherever I
went. (No, I'm not an Extra so you don't have to look. Other priorities
took precedence - work, family)

Asking $15 including shipping CONUS. If you want USPS Priority mail, add
$2.50.

Acceptable payments are via paypal (preferred) to my e-mail address, check,
MO.

Questions?

[Elecraft] Idea on improving CW speed

2005-07-02 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
In thinking about the various methods of improving CW reading, the following
occurred to me. Has anybody done this?

In the Koch method (I think that's the right one), you learn a few letters
and then work up. So you might learn "I" and "e" and then practice them
until you get very good. Then add a letter and work on three letters.

Here's my thought.

One method is to just listen up on the bands and see what you can hear and
"read" in CW. But what would happen if you did this with just a few
letters? Listen up to a QSO but concentrate on hearing just the I's and
e's. Once you feel like you are getting a lot of them, add a letter or two.

Over time, would this be a valid method of listening and improving one's
speed?

RE: [Elecraft] eHam Article

That's certainly going to hurt eHam's chances of getting more articles from
people. I didn't read the article but if you start applying censurship, you
lose writers very quickly. And supporters, I would imagine.

Now if his "advertisers" forced him to remove the article, that is just as
bad.

[Elecraft] RS sale items (more)

2004-10-13 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
Last week I was at my friendly RS getting a new alarm clock. Lost my old
one.

They had a special sale on the RS version of an Atomic portable alarm clock.
Only $20. And it is a nice size for packing or for on the desk. Normally
$30, I think. Nice clock with super lighting. Number is 63-964.
(www.radioshack.com didn't show it as a sale item (still shows $20) but the
sign at the store did). Only drawback is that you can't set it for UTC.
Not a biggy in my mind.

They also had a special on batteries. Well, the special on batteries is not
that super but the batteries come in a nifty case. It is touted as a can
holder that says it will hold 4 cans of soda or whatever. But I didn't see
it that way. I saw it as a nifty carrier for something like the PAC-12 or
MP-1. It is bright red (so it is easy to find) and has a shoulder/carrying
strap. Haven't tried it yet but looks like it should work great.

Price on the battery pack/cooler says $20 but the sale was for $10.

[Elecraft] FS: Ventenna HFp Portable Antenna

2004-10-14 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
I have for sale:

Ventenna's HFp 10-40 meter Portable Antenna. Used little (don't get out
much). Has all parts etc. For details, see www.ventenna.com.

Asking $130 including regular shipping CONUS. (If you want USPS Priority
shipping add $3.00 and I'll pick up the rest.)

Payment can be by PayPal (preferred) (to my e-mail address above), check,
cash, MO.

If PayPal, they take approx $4.00 of this so add $2.00. (I don't like
PayPal any better than most people but it sure is convenient.)

Questions welcome.

[Elecraft] Which mic

2004-11-27 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
I'm thinking about asking for a new mic for Christmas. Is there a nice (but
not big $$$) mic that will work on the K2, the 703 and the 817? I'm
assuming that I would need several adapters but that is ok.

I'm leaning towards a Heil type mic. Probably a hand-held or headset. (But
the Heil desk mic deal on Elecraft page is tempting if it will work on all
three rigs.)

XYL says Christmas list is due this weekend or nor presents for me so quick
response is appreciated.

[Elecraft] Soldering station questions (please, no wars)

2004-12-27 Thread Michael Bower N4NMR
1) Mine may be going bad:

I suspect my temp controlled soldering station is going south on me. In
building my K2, I've noticed that it takes longer to get the solder flowing.

Are there any _cheap_ but somewhat accurate ways of testing a station like
this? (Sorry, don't remember the brand name but it is one of the known
ones.)

2) recommendations (again, please, no wars here):

If I have to replace my current station, can someone tell which of the
Weller stations are good and which are ones to avoid. It seems that Weller
is the only thing that I can get in town.

(I'll take other recommendations just in case I have to go on-line to order
one.)

Thanks, folks, in advance.

Hope you are all having a safe, fun holiday.
