Maybe we can all take a deep breath, relax and remember amateur radio is a
hobby. Try to have some fun while we await our K4s. Peace y’all.

[Elecraft] KX2 Micro Manual

2018-01-26 Thread Michael Downs
Greetings KX2 users. I have developed an app for iPhones and iPads that is a
comprehensive guide to using the KX2. This app was developed in response to
requests from many KX2 users for an app like the ones I’ve created for the KX3
and other Elecraft products.

It is available in the Apple App Store for a small fee. Search for “KX2 Micro
Manual” or “Mike Downs, ks7d” to see a list of all my apps for Elecraft
products.

Those of you that use Android phones, please let me know, off list, if an
Android version would be desirable.

[Elecraft] KX1 Micro Manual

2013-11-28 Thread Michael Downs
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I have a new app in the Apple Store and Google
Play for the iPhone and Android. It is KX1 Micro Manual. The KX1 Micro Manual
application is intended to be a handy reference to the Elecraft KX1 Owner's
Manual which is available on the Elecraft web site.

Most of the text in the application is taken directly from the KX1 Owner's
Manual with changes in format made to accommodate the iPhone and Android Phone
architecture. Elecraft has approved the use of their copyrighted material in
this app.

In addition to the full text of the KX1 Owner's Manual, the application
includes operating instructions for the KXAT1 Automatic Antenna Tuner, KXPD1
Plug-In
Keyer Paddle, KXB30 30-Meter Adapter, and KXB3080 30 and 80 Meter Adapter.

Users may search each chapter of the Owner's Manual or the entire Owner's
Manual at once to find keywords or phrases in the text. Found text is
highlighted in yellow.

The app can be located in the Apple Store or Google Play by searching for "mike
downs, ks7d"

Enjoy.

[Elecraft] K2/K3/KX3/P3 Android Phone Apps

2013-09-28 Thread Michael Downs
I have had many requests from owners of Android phones for an Android version
of my apps for the Apple iPhone. I am happy to announce that the following
micro manuals are all available for Android phones now:

1. K3/KX3 Programmer's Reference

2. K3 Micro Manual

3. P3 Micro Manual

4. KX3 Micro Manual

5. K2 Micro Manual

You can find these apps in Google Play. Just do a search for 'mike downs,
ks7d'. Note that the minimum required Android version is Jelly Bean Version 4.1
(API level 16). Unfortunately, there is a glitch in earlier versions of
Google's Android operating system that prevent these apps from functioning, so
I have had to design them all for Version 4.1 and above.

I hope you find these apps useful, and that they make operating your Elecraft
rigs more efficient and enjoyable from wherever you are - at home or on the
road. None of these apps requires an Internet connection, so they will operate
from anywhere.

Happy Elecrafting.

Mike, ks7d

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 Prog Ref App

2013-08-30 Thread Michael Downs
Dave,

The K3/Kx3 Programmer's Reference app includes several essential additions to
the free Elecraft K3/KX3 Programmer's Reference Manual:

1. It includes the full text of the Elecraft K3/KX3 Programmer's Reference
Manual.

2. It includes full details from the Menu Reference and Switch Emulation
sections of the K3 Owner's Manual.

3. It includes full details from the Menu Reference and Switch Emulation
sections of the KX3 Owner's Manual.

4. It includes the full text of all K3 Firmware Release Notes since the K3 was
introduced.

5. It includes the full text of all KX3 Firmware Release Notes since the KX3
was introduced.

For the serious programmer these are essential references and they are all
built in to the App. To get this information from the free Elecraft documents
one would have to load each of the five documents on to their Android or
iPhone, and then switch back and forth between documents. The K3/KX3
Programmer's Reference app includes all this information in one easy to use app.

Thanks for asking.

Mike ks7d

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Front Panel Problem

2013-08-03 Thread Michael Downs
Thanks Dave,

I tried rotating the four knobs and tapping them. Found out rotating the knobs
works as expected, but the tap and hold functions do not work at all. None of
the other buttons on the front panel work as expected except the POWER button.
Tapping many of the buttons has no effect, but others cause unrelated functions
to execute. For example, tapping the PRE button causes NTCH to turn on or off.
Tapping the ANT button causes NR to turn on or off. Tapping the SPOT button or
AFX button causes the SHIFT/LO control to switch from SHIFT to LO and the
HI/WIDTH control to shift from HI to WIDTH.

This behavior causes me to believe the Parameter Initialization procedure needs
to be activated, but I can't get it to initiate because the SHIFT/LO control
doesn't work as expected. Oops! I just got it to work by holding the SPOT
button while tapping the POWER button. Weird. Anyway, I restored the K3
Configuration but none of the front panels problems have been resolved.

[Elecraft] K3 Front Panel Problem

2013-08-03 Thread Michael Downs
Elecraft List,

I haven't used my K3 for quite a while as I have been playing with the KX3 (the
K3 has been sitting on the desk totally disconnected from everything). Now when
I fire up the K3, none of the front panel buttons and dual-purpose controls
work, except volume and VFO A. I thought maybe the menu parameters got altered
somehow preventing the firmware from operating correctly, so I tried to do a
parameter initialization. But that failed because the Shift/Lo knob is not
working (The other dual-purpose knobs: Hi/Width, Speed/Mic, and Cmp/Pwr don't
work either). Therefore, I figured the contacts between the front panel and the
radio had become corroded and weren't making a good electrical connection
anymore. So, I removed the front panel and inspected the pins. Everything
looked normal and I put the radio back together again. Still not working.

Anyone want to make suggestions on what else I should try? I can communicate
with the radio using the K3 Utility and I did reinstall the MCU firmware, DSP
firmware and front panel firmware. None of that helped. I still think there
must be a communication problem between the front panel and the radio, but
don't know how to fix it. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote CW for K3

2012-10-08 Thread Michael Downs
Yes, I am working on incorporating a Dit/Dah type interface for iPhone users of
K3iNetwork. However, I have run into some issues with getting the Dit/Dah
virtual keys to respond quickly enough to user taps. Seems I can't break the 15
WPM sending barrier. Anyway, I will keep plugging away until I find and fix
what I am doing wrong in my code.

In the meantime, I am working on a KX3 Micro Manual for the iPhone. Good to
have a second project to switch to when the first one gives you the
programmer's equivalent of writer's block.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 4.51 is now production released

2012-07-06 Thread Michael Downs
I just loaded firmware 4.51 on my K3. Everything went smoothly. The load of MCU
and DSP 1 and 2 were verified by the K3 Utility. However, now my front panel
buttons no longer work properly. For example, PRE turns on/off NTCH. All the
buttons seem to be affected. However, if I use the K3 Utility to send commands
to the K3 they seem to work properly.

I tried loading all the software again, including the front panel firmware.
Again the K3 Utility verifies the install, but the front panel buttons are
messed up. Help!!!

[Elecraft] K3iNetwork iPhone App Users

2012-04-03 Thread Michael Downs
If you are a user of K3iNetwork, which is an app I developed for the iPhone
that allows you to remotely control your K3 with your iPhone, iPod Touch, or
iPad via a WiFi or the Internet, I would like to hear from you. I want to
create an email group of K3iNetwork users who would like to help me decide on
enhancements to the app.

For the curious, you can find K3iNetwork here:

Thank you for your interest in K3iNetwork.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 macro help

2012-01-07 Thread Michael Downs
Joe,

The SB command is in the K3 Programmer's Reference. Look in the Command Set
Overview, Table 1 on page 1 and in the Command Reference section on page 16.
Its listed as SB *, not SBx. SB0; turns the sub receiver off and SB1; turn it
on.

[Elecraft] Remote Control of K3 with iPhone/iDevice

2011-10-03 Thread Michael Downs
I have two apps in the Apple App Store that allow you to remotely control your
K3 using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. These apps are free as I want to
encourage those who are interested to try them out and provide me feedback on
any bugs discovered and enhancements desired.

The apps use two different approaches to communicate with the K3 from your
iDevice. K3iConnect establishes an ad hoc network with a wifi serial adapter
that fits in the RS232 port on the K3. Thus, no PC/Mac or cables are required
and the K3 can be remotely controlled from anywhere within 30+ feet of the
radio.

K3iNetwork uses your local WiFi network and PC/Mac to communicate with the K3.
In this case you need to have your K3 tethered to your PC or Mac via an RS232
cable. The advantage here is that sound from the K3 line out can be streamed to
the iDevice with a third party app such as Airfoil.

Both apps will work with the P3.

I have used these apps to carry on CW and data QSOs with other amateurs. I
think they are an exciting addition to the Elecraft Mojo, but they also need
the benefit of users ideas on how to make them better. Also, maybe other
iDevice or Android developers will be inspired to develop their own apps to add
even more capabilities.

Enjoy!

[Elecraft] P3 Micro Manual App

2011-01-23 Thread Michael Downs
Fellow Elecrafters,

I have a new iPhone app available in the Apple store. I call it the P3 Micro
Manual:

It includes the complete text of the P3 Owner's Manual and the P3 Programmer's
Reference in a single app. It is based on Elecraft's P3 Owner's Manual,
Revision A7, and P3 Programmer's Reference, Revision A2.
It can be downloaded to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad so it can be with you
wherever you go.
No bulky paper manuals to carry around.
Does not require a 3G of WiFi network to operate. Works anywhere!

Combine it with my K3 Programmer's Guide and K3 Micro Manual and you have a
complete reference set for the K3 available on your iDevice. Check the link
below to find the P3 Micro Manual in Apple's iTunes store:

[Elecraft] K3 Micro Manual Update

2011-01-06 Thread Michael Downs
The K3 Micro Manual, an iPhone version of the K3 Owner's Manual, has been
updated and is available in the Apple Store for download. The following updates
and enhancements have been made to the application:

1. Updated text to incorporate the K3 Owner's Manual, Revision D9, December 7,
2010.
2. Now includes all chapters in K3 Owner's Manual, except Appendix A: Crystal
Filter Installation.
3. Added a comprehensive Index. A tap on an Index item takes the user to the
selected text in the Owner's Manual.
4. Added full-text search capability. The user can search individual chapters
or the entire Owner's Manual.
5. Added HTML-style links to chapters in the Owner's Manual to enhance user
navigation.

The application icon has also been revised, and now incorporates the Elecraft
logo.

Please email me your suggestions for desired enhancements. I plan to release a
version for iPad next.

[Elecraft] K3 Micro Manual iPhone App

2010-11-24 Thread Michael Downs
If you are a K3 owner/operator, you may be interested in a new iPhone
application. I call it the K3 Micro Manual as it incorporates most of the K3
Owner's Manual in a handy iPhone format. It is compatible with iPhone (iOS
3.1.3 and later), iPod Touch and iPad. It has been updated to include the
Owner's Manual Errata, and all firmware changes since the Owner's Manual was
published. Thus, it is current through November 14, 2010. In addition, I have
included operating tips from the Elecraft web site, selected emails from the
Elecraft Reflector, and operating experience.

If you think you may be interested in this app, it is now available in the
Apple App Store. It is listed under the Reference category. Just search for "K3
Owners Manual" or "ks7d." I welcome your input on enhancements to this
application, and for your favorite operating tips. I plan updates over time to
this app to keep it current with the latest Elecraft Owner's Manual, and to add

[Elecraft] K3 Programmer's Reference iPhone App Available

2010-04-26 Thread Michael Downs
For those of you who have an iPhone and would like to have the K3 Programmer's
Reference as a handy reference on your iPhone, read on.

I have developed an iPhone app that puts the entire K3 Programmer's Reference
document in iPhone format for your use. It also includes appropriate
supplemental information from the K3 Owner's Manual incorporated into the
reference to make less cross checking necessary as you program your PC to
control the K3 or write macros.

It is a free application available in Apple's App Store. You can find it by
using the search terms K3 Programmer's Guide, or just K3 or ks7d. It is
categorized by Apple as Reference.

It currently is the only iPhone app available that supports the K3. Hopefully
some of the other K3 users will develop other iPhone apps for the K3. Enjoy.

[Elecraft] K2 audio de-sensing

2006-07-14 Thread Michael Downs
I built K2 serial number 4443, and it has worked very well since I completed it
last year. Recently, I have noticed a new odd behavior in audio sensitivity
during the CW transmit/receive cycle. I have t-r set at 0.05. When I am sending
CW the audio between keystrokes will sometimes drop off significantly for a few
seconds and then recover to full sensitivity. This behavior repeats as I am
transmitting, in a somewhat random manner. It is an intermittent, but
consistently occurring problem that happens one or more times during each
transmit/receive period. It happens whether I transmit into my antenna or a
dummy load. I thought it might be the KDSP2 DSP Filter, but the behavior still
occurs when I have DSP in bypass mode. It also occurs with all other add-in
modules removed from the K2. Also, the K2 and all other station accessories
have a common RF ground.

Suggestions on where to look for the cause of this problem would be
appreciated. Thanks.Mike, KS7D___
