Re: [Elecraft] RS232 to USB adapter for K2

2016-11-22 Thread Mike Heitmann
If you're handy with a soldering iron, these FTDI USB to RS-232 "wire end"
cables work well:
http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/DataSheets/Cables/DS_USB_RS232_CABLES.pdf

The cable is a USB plug / converter at one end and "bare wires" at the other
end. You will need to solder on a connector that fits your rig. Given that the
K2 I/O connector is not standard, I would only connect pins 2, 3 and 5 on the
mating connector.

MANY THANKS to Mike Heitmann, N0SO, for so kindly contacting me to say
perhaps the levels were set too high and forcing the KX3 to go into a
self-protect mode.  THAT WAS IT!  By reducing the sound card level and the
K3 level, I now have 4 ALC bars.  Hot diggity dog!

MANY thanks to each of the other kind folks who sent suggestions, including
Don Wilhelm, Brian Alsop, and Ray Sills.

As the saying goes, now we're cooking with gas!
Cheers to all!

Re: [Elecraft] iPad as wired remote for Elecraft rig?

2013-05-13 Thread Mike Heitmann
Hi Andrew,

Apple is pretty restrictive with what / who / how the USB and Bluetooth
Interfaces get used in iOS. As a result, not much has been developed for the
wired or bluetooth interface for iPad/iPhone, WiFi, however, is another story.
I've been happily using the HamLog app with two devices: the Pigtail and the
Piglet, with my KX3. It works very well.

The Pigtail or Piglet device (you only need one of the two) connects to your
KX3
serial port and creates a "virtual serial cable" to the KX3. The HamLog app
talks to the KX3 via an "adhoc" type WiFi connection providing rig control and
logging capability.

It works great in the field for portable operations, and when I get home I can
export the HamLog adif contact log file, then upload the file to my main
logging program on the PC in my shack.

Take a look at:
http://pignology.net/
And some of the demo video:

I've searched a lot and can't find the answer so I'm asking the group.

Is it possible to use the iPad as "detachable head" for a K2, K3 or KX3,
using a direct connection (no Bluetooth / PC / wireless / Internet)?

Re: [Elecraft] iSDR app and KX3 not working

2012-12-29 Thread Mike Heitmann
The KX3 I/Q output has to be enabled via the KX3 menu before it will work. It's
also pretty low level, so make sure the iMic is set to mic level instead of
line level. The iSDR app will route the sound output to the iMic output jack,
so you will also need to connect headphones or a powered speaker to the iMic
output jack.

The iSDR app will not control the KX3, you will have to set the center
frequency for the iSDR display manually via the iSDR option menu. I usually set
the center frequency to zero and consider the iSDR display to be +/- what the
KX3 VFO displays.

I've used our iPad2 / camera adapter / iMic / iSDR on several occasions. It
makes a nice pan adapter display.

Hope this helps get you going!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q output for pandapter

2012-08-02 Thread Mike Heitmann
Buck,

I've had results similar to what Tony describes. I'm using a external Griffin
iMic as the soundcard. It works well, and I have been able to use a Virtual
Audio Cable (VAC) to route the NaP3 audio to a 3rd party digital mode
application (I use Fldigi). You still need an external cable to route the
audio
from the soundcard output to the mic input of the KX3, you can't use a VAC for
that. It works just about like my Flex radio does configured that way, except
with full break-in CW!

My Flex-1500 is looking for a new home now.

Buck, I have NaP3 running with my KX3, and it works fine. Set the global
offset to 0. NaP3 will automatically balance images if you give it a strong
signal to work on. I use my XG3 to put in a signal of S9+20 and tune the
KX3 about 20 khz above the XG3 signal. You'll see two spikes, but
eventually the right-hand spike will diminish. You can move the tuning
around a bit, and finally you'll see the image drop to 40db or even more
below the correct signal. When an antenna is connected, the images will be
invisible in the grass.

The cable that carries the I-Q has to be stereo 3/32" on one end and stereo
1/8" on the other end. If something is shorted in the cable, that would
cause the symptoms you describe.

Anyway, I assure you that it does work and that in fact it makes an
excellent SDR. Once you get it going, you'll love it.

Re: [Elecraft] Digital modes interface for K2 - recommendations sought.

2012-07-18 Thread Mike Heitmann

I can vouch for and highly recommend the circuit on Don's website. I built one
several years ago and installed it in my K2. I wired it to unused pins in the
mic connector so I only had one cable to deal with when
connecting/disconnecting. I've made many PSK and RTTY contacts using it.

I was fortunate enough to get one of the last PC boards, but as Don says, it
would be a simple matter to build it on perf board or "dead bug" style.

Works great!

Chris,

Not a full solution, but you may want to look at the K2 Fixed Audio
Output on my website www.w3fpr.com. There are no boards left and no
kits available, but the circuit is simple to wire on perfboard - it is
all audio frequencies and nothing is critical - just a simple LM386
audio amplifier

I can vouch for that. I backpack with my KX1 and have never had a problem with
it. It's been a workhorse for me, and will continue to serve in that capacity
until my KX3 arrives (although, I'm beginning to wonder if that will ever
really happen).

I also have a K2 with the 100W and and auto tuner in a separate enlcosure.
Never
a problem with them either. I've not ever taken the K2 backpacking but I have
used it for fixed portable ops and for demos and had no trouble with it.
They're
pretty tough when properly assembled.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 KXUSB vs KXSER interface

2012-01-06 Thread Mike Heitmann
All the programming/CW/PTT cable discussions prompted me to pass along this tip
someone else gave me:
On the recommendation of someone I met in Dayton this year, I've made several
radio programming/CAT/CW/PTT cables using these devices:
http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/USBRS232.htm

They terminate to bare wires so you can put whatever connector you need on
the
end. It's also easy to slip a copper braid over the wire for shielding if that
is required. I've had no issues using them on Windows or Linux.

Mouser sells them:
http://www.mouser.com/Search/m_ProductDetail.aspx?FTDI/USB-RS232-WE-1800-BT_50/&qs=D1/PMqvA100CRKe9cg4TXA==

This model is RS-232, but they have them with TTL an RS-422 as well if you have
a requirement for those interfaces.

I'm using them for radio CAT/PTT/CW keying with my K2 and IC-706. The '706 CAT
cable is connected homebrewed CIV circuit covered with black heat shrink
tubing. The PTT/CW keying cables are connected to homebrew single transistor
keying circuits specific for the radio it's intended for, also covered with
heat
shrink tubing. It makes a nice, compact set of cables. I use a separate cable
for programming/CAT and keying/PTT.

Off topic a bit, but I also use these cables for radio programming and low
speed
data with my D-STAR radios.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and FLdigi

Hi Bob,

I ran my K2 all evening using Fldigi 3.21.3 / Flrig 1.0.1. About half the time
I used a Dell XPS1530 (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and lots of RAM, Windows 7 Pro).
Then I switched to a Dell Mini 9 Netbook (Intel Atom CPU, Windows XP Pro). I
use the netbook for portable/travel/demos.

Fldigi/Flrig never failed to control or key the rig and never locked up.

That said, Julian's suggestion to look at the USB<-->serial adapter is a good
one, the one I was using tonight also uses the FTDI chip set.

You might also experiment with some clip-on ferrite RFI beads - I do have
another USB adapter that I use with one of my Linux systems on a D-STAR radio.
It works OK on in the shack with the antennas located far away from the
adapter, but I had it "lock up" repeatedly one time when I was using it for a
D-STAR demo using an HT with the whip antenna in close proximity to the
netbook/usb adapter. When the HT transmitted the adapter stopped working until
it was unplugged, then plugged back in to the netbook. It apparently is
susceptible to the presence of an RF field, so I stopped using it for the
demos.

Also, turn off any "extra" processes Windows may be launching at boot time like
MS Office fast start, iTunes helper, etc.

Hope this information helps!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and FLdigi

2011-02-22 Thread Mike Heitmann
Bob,

I've used FLRig/FLDigi on Linux with my K2 for a while now and had no issues -
I ran the ARRL RTTY Roundup that way this year. I don't know about the windows
version, I'll give it a try this evening and see what happens.

RE: [Elecraft] how to run KAT100 and control software - re. two controlcables

2007-10-25 Thread Mike Heitmann
Brian,

You will need to make a special cable with three (3)connectors to connect
the appropriate signals to both the KAT100 and the RS-232 port on your PC.
See page 25 of the KAT100 manual for details.

Don't try to a standard serial I/O cable for the RS-232, that will do bad
things to your K2/100. Make the special cable.

Subject: [Elecraft] how to run KAT100 and control software - re. two

OK. Honestly I have searched the mail list archives and manuals...and cannot

find the answer

I have a K2 with 100 w PA (so that serves in place of K102 i/w aux bus), and

the KAT100 tuner. A cable runs from the K2 aux DB9 to the tuner. Now, I
want to run a cable from my computer to allow me to use the K2 Remote
Software.
I have the cable.. but there is no place to put it!!
I assume I have to use some sort of DB9 connector.. but what sort and where

do I plug that it in such that the KAT100 tuner and the computer are
connected?
Does it go in the K2 aux socket and then cables go off to the KAT 100 and
the computer? Or some other way that KAT100 and computer software signals
are sent in a parallel fashion?

If any one would please outline this in some detail or point me to where
this it explained I would really appreciate it. Someone else might too..
since I honestly don't see it anywhere.
But then again, my wife says I don't see things that are in plain sight.

RE: [Elecraft] KPA-100 Problem

2007-05-25 Thread Mike Heitmann
Tom,

I hate to admit this, but I had a similar problem when I built my KPA100.

The reason I hate to admit it is after troubleshooting, I found that I had
installed Q6, Q7 (the two odd shaped FETs) backwards. To make matters
worse, I broke a lead on one removing it to turn it around and ended up
ordering replacements from Elecraft, which delayed the completion of the amp
by several days.

Hope this helps!

Good evening Group,

I seem to be having some trouble with my KPA-100. (K2 serial 4991), Perhaps
one of you could shine a light where mine don't reach.

Assembly and initial checks went OK.

At the end of the assembly, I ran into the problem.

Checks on page 46:

Junction of C77 and R11 says 90 to 150 V, I get 11.6 V

U4 pin 8 says -5 to -25 V, I get 2.8 mV

I have rechecked T3 and all looks well. I was careful with D1 - D8 as I
knew they would be hard to check after assembly.

Any suggestions before I take the rear panel and heat sink off? (shudder).

RE: [Elecraft] External KPA100?

2007-01-07 Thread Mike Heitmann
Jim,

My KPA100 is the mounted as the top cover for my KAT100-2 in an EC2. It is
very easy to do and works well. All of the connections that would be made
between the KPA100 and the K2 are present in the KAT100, almost as though it
was designed to be configured this way.

Your K2 will need a KIO2 module, and a you will need to make a short BNC to
BNC coax cable to connect the K2 ANTENNTA output to the RF IN on the
KPA100/KAT100-2 combination.

Here is a website that documents the procedure:
http://www.kk7p.com/k2kpa100.html

I've read it's possible to build a KPA100 into an EC2. Has anyone documented
how they've done this at a website somewhere?

RE: [Elecraft] Help in hooking up my straight Key

2006-12-31 Thread Mike Heitmann
Paul,

You will need an adapter for the 706. It uses a 1/4" stereo plug instead of
the 1/8" stereo plug used by the KX1. The 706 also needs the plug wired to
close the circuit tip to shell, and you will need to turn off the internal
keyer in the "Q4 CW PADDLE" Quick menu (press and hold "DISPLAY" for two
seconds to activate the Quick menu).

73 and Happy New Year!

Paul,

I can answer with certainty on the K1 and KX1:
Yes, you must use a stereo plug - but you need only to connect to the shell
and the tip. Enter the menu in the K1 and KX1 and set INP Hnd.

That is all there is to it. I do not have access to the '706 manual, but
you can check your manual to see how to connect the key.

Hello all,

I'm packing my backpack for the hike up to Pulpit Rock, PA today. The
weather looks bad as it has just stopped raining for the moment so I packed
my tent just in case-hi!

I plan to operate on 20m, 30m, and 40m tonight. So listen up for WB3AAL and
WA3WSJ sending our dits and dahs into the great beyond! I plan to start
operating around 2000utc or so.

If you are my very FIRST contact, I'll send you out a very nice mint $2.00
Canadian Polar Bear Coin! So be my first qso and grab the coin!

[Elecraft] K2 Digital Signals Mod

2006-02-03 Thread Mike Heitmann
Greetings All,

I'm about to install my KSB2 and was looking at the modification listed on the
website that brings out the microphone jumpers and signals necessary for
digital modes via a ribbon cable and small PC board. I've monitored this list
for a while and have not seen much posted regarding the mod.

Have many done this?

Is the PCB available somewhere? (I was considering "deadbug style" construction)

Re: [Elecraft] PLL reference oscillator failure

2006-01-19 Thread Mike Heitmann
I would check the solder connections on the toroids in the PLL section, in
particular, the transformers. Check continuity thru the windings by measuring
from other component leads connected to the pads the toroid leads are soldered
to. If you don't get the toroid leads cleaned and tinned properly it's easy to
end up with intermitant connections.

By the way, I'm impressed with the speed at which you're assembling your K2! It
took me about two weeks (working an hour or two during the week and a marathon
session one weekend) to get were you are in only two days!

[Elecraft] K2 #4757 is Operational

2006-01-16 Thread Mike Heitmann
Sorry if this is a dupe, I tried to send it earlier but had the wrong 'from'
address. I do not beleive it made it to the list.

73 de N0SO
=
Greetings,

Just completed the final assembly of K2 s/n 4757 (the basic kit). I was very
pleased that it went together without any problems except the long time
delay between when it was ordered (March, 2005) and when I completed
assembly (last night). A family crisis, now resolved, caused the long
delay.

Not being able to locate my dummy load, I rigged one from the resistors on
hand and had to limit power output to 2 watts or less during the alignment
and test, so I need to do a little more testing this evening (after
locating the dummy load) and then I hope to put the rig on the air.

I'm very pleased with the rig so far -- it went together well, the receiver
performed very well with the test lead wire I had clipped to the antenna
input and it's easy to operate once you read the directions. I consider
myself a happy K2 owner.

I've been a lurker on this list until now, but I certainly have been
appreciative of the assembly tips, etc. that I've read. I'm sure they helped
me avoid some of the more common mistakes. Thanks everyone! Perhaps I'll be
able to check into the net next week with my new rig!

Now on to the KSB2 and KPA100. I'm thinking of putting the KPA100 in a
separate enclosure.
