Re: [Elecraft] [OT] WWV Time Transmissions

2020-08-31 Thread N4ST - Jim
He may have just recently added a local RFI source to his home.
There are some noisy switching supplies out there on consumer devices.
One clock I have has an LED display and it shuts the LEDs off at 2am local
time for 10 minutes to allow syncing to WWV.

I had a friend ask me if something has happened to WWV's time
transmissions. He says the clocks in his home and his watch are
no longer syncing correctly. I think these are syncing to
signals at about 60KHz.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Ham Radio near high voltage power lines?

2021-04-27 Thread N4ST - Jim
Jerry,

I'm sure you can make something work. I used to have HV power lines about
150 yards from my house.
It was only a problem during rain/snow/fog with conduction across the
insulators.
I had a cubical quad and could identify the offending pole and could
likewise null out the noise.
Oddly, I don't recall there being a problem on the 80m or 40m dipoles.
You could always do a quick noise check with a mobile HF rig or a handheld
AM shortwave receiver.

Just moved to a new QTH and there are high voltage power lines cutting
across the corner of our property running NW direction. The house is on the
East side of the lines.

Is it reasonable to expect good operability or is it a wash? I don't want to
go through the troubles if I'll just be frustrated.

Was looking to do a 60' tower for the high bands (I'll still be below the
lines height wise), multiband vertical (low bands 80/40/30) , and
dipole(80/40).

Vertical is planned to have 60 or more radials.

Re: [Elecraft] Gurus

2021-06-10 Thread N4ST - Jim
FWIW, be careful with your measurement process.
I got very depressed when I saw that my K3S had harmonics only 20db down on
most bands when measured by Tiny SA and its telescoping antenna.
It was not being overloaded and in fact I measured similar results when feeding
a dummy load.
Then I went outside the shack at a distance from the antennas and found that
the harmonics were 40dB down or better.
Evidently when measuring inside the shack I was getting RF leakage directly
through the front panel of the rig. (?).

Oops! I just looked at the KPA1500 specifications and found this for
Supply Voltage and Current: 200 to 250 VAC, 50/60 Hz up to 20A.

There is no mention of 120V, so your electrician will need to run a 240V
circuit (probably 25A or 30A) to a correctly sized 240V receptacle.
You'll need to cut off the 120V plug and install a mating 240V plug on
that power cable.

I have no need for this Tascam sound card. I used it for years to run digital

Included is the Tascam in the original box, a pair of audio cables (RCA

a USB A to B cable wrapped around a pair of 2.4” mix 31 ferrite cores to stop

Are you sure there is no breakdown in your antenna, feedline or
external antenna switch? Infinite SWR on the external meter would
indicate an issue beyond it.

Are you seeing the problem on any other band? with any other antenna?

I recently went through a "High SWR" issue with my K3 that turned out
to be a bad coaxial jumper (between rig and switch that allows me to
switch rigs) even though the jumper does not test bad with an ohm meter
(no shorts, opens or intermittents as either connector is flexed or
twisted).

It's a puzzler.
CW is fine. Even 100W key down CW is fine, which I don't normally run on 6M.
Can't figure out why CW is OK, but FT8 "creates" high SWR.
Problem did not exist before replacing the LPA and PA.

What is the 6m antenna, how far away is it from the xmitter? Sounds like
an issue with a balun or matching overheating with the stress of FT8?

I would hook the K3 up directly to the 6m antenna or the dummy load.
Something is certainly acting odd.

High SWR occurs immediately when using the FT8 Tune function on WSJT-X
It does not occur initially with a dummy load, however once the high SWR

A CW dit will clear the high SWR state..

I've seen guys trying to help asking questions for which I haven't seen
answers. I'll try ONCE to help.

1. Describe the antenna. Where is it (with respect to the shack)?
5el Cushcraft located 55 feet from the shack.
2. As others have observed, the first thing to check in any system when
something like this happens is to suspect EVERYTHING in the antenna
system, ESPECIALLY ever piece of coax and every connection. That means
getting serious to check that every connector is wrench tight, and to
"rattle" all cables and connectors while watching for any changes.
By passed Daiwa antenna switch. Swapped coax jumper cables.
3. What WAS the SWR on CW? What was it on FT8?
1.1-1.2 SWR on CW. Meter pegged +10 on FT8
4. What happens if you click on TUNE in the software you're using for FT8?
That is how I have done the FT8 testing.
5. What power did you use for each mode?
Have used 50W & 100W on CW. 8W, 10W & 50W on FT8
The FT8 SWR is fine at 8 watts, before K3S PA is engaged. No good
at 10W when the PA kicks in.
6. Are any of your coax connectors, including adapters, junk? If they
don't say Amphenol 83-1SP, or have a MIL spec number stamped on them,
there a VERY good chance that they are JUNK. When I got back on the air
in 2003, I filled my parts stash with all sorts of no-name adapters from
ham vendors. Over the next 6-8 years, they caused me all sorts of grief.
Flimsy construction, spring wire in elbow adapters, out of physical
tolerance center conductors that don't mate well to form a solid
contact. I had Tee adapters fall apart.
I may have some "junk" connectors. DX Engineering crimp/solder
PL-259s.
Have swapped jumpers. Bypassed antenna switch. No observable
difference.
FWIW, my TenTec Eagle is perfectly happy with the 6M beam, 70W FT8,
1.2 SWR.
I suspect my "new" refurbished PA module from Elecraft has some
instability.

Jim;
Make sure you are updated to the latest 5.67 Firmware.
In the notes of the K3 Utility you will find this in the Help\K3
Firmware Release Notes;
It is specific for 6m, it is -only- for the KPA3"A", and will fix any
oscillation issues (which can manifest as High-SWR);
Keith WE6R Elecraft K3/K4 Tech

K3 MCU 5.67 / DSP 2.88 / FPF 1.26, 1-22-2019
* 6 M GAIN REDUCTION (FOR USE WITH KPA3A):
In some cases the KPA3A may have more gain than necessary on 6 meters.
As a precaution, all radios using a KPA3A (instead of the older KPA3)
should be configured to insert some attenuation. See instructions below.
No hardware modifications are required.

INSTRUCTIONS: [Do this only on a K3S, or a K3 that has a KPA3A installed.]
1. Select the 6 meter band.
2. Connect a dummy load rated at 50 W (or higher) to the transceiver.
3. Set the PWR control to 50 watts.
4. Place the ATU in bypass mode.
5. Locate the CONFIG:TUN PWR menu entry. Set the value to NOR using VFO A.
6. Locate the CONFIG:TXGN HP menu entry.
7. Tap the '8' switch (NR) once to add "ATN6" to the parameter display
on VFO A.
(Tapping it a second time would return to the original
non-attenuated setting.)
8. Exit the menu.
9. Hold TUNE to do automatic power calibration on 6 meters at the 50 W
level. After a few seconds, tap XMIT to terminate the TUNE operation.

NOTE: If you have difficulty reaching full power on 6 meters after
making this change, it could be because your PA module is actually a
KPA3, not a KPA3A. In this case, re-do the above procedure, changing the
TXGN HP menu setting back to the original (i.e., without "ATN6"
showing). (Max. power output at 50 MHz is specified at 100 W +/- 1 dB,
typical. 1 dB below 100 W is approx. 90 W. See Specifications for max
output at 51 MHz and higher.)

Re: [Elecraft] [SPAM] K3S - High SWR on 6 Meters

2022-06-15 Thread N4ST - Jim
For some reason, my previous post did not show up.

*** PROBLEM SOLVED ***

I had an old LPA/PA combo that was replaced with an upgraded LPA/PA combo.
The new PA required a configuration setting that inserted 6dB of attenuation in
the amplifier chain to avoid instabilities.
The old combo would not reach full power if the attenuation was inserted, but
the new combo was unstable unless it was.
Keith at Elecraft and also K7HP both suggested the "fix" and that was indeed
the problem!

Is the ATU in BYPASS or AUTO mode? A dit would cause it to resolve a
match or recall a previous match. If your 6M antenna has an SWR of
1.5:1 or less, then the ATU should be in BYPASS mode for 6M.

With WSJT-X, is the Radio Setup menu set to Fake It or SPLIT? If SPLIT,
then is VFO B on some random or frequency distant from VFO A? I
suggest setting the WSJT-X Setup to Fake it.

Re: [Elecraft] What is a reasonable turnover time to hear from Elecraft support:

2022-06-15 Thread N4ST - Jim
Depends on the issue. In my case it was just some replacement K3S modules.
Here is my time line for a recent issue.

4/12 - K3S PA failure reported to Elecraft
4/14 - Email from Elecraft with testing procedures.
4/20 - RMA received and LPA/PA returned to Elecraft
6/13 - Refurbished new style LPA/PA received
6/14 - Configuration assistance from Elecraft - Back on the air.

So for me it was about 1 month from reporting initial problem to received
"new" parts and that included a 2-week vacation by the guy handling the RMA
accounting.
FWIW, I never called Elecraft although they did call me to discuss testing
procedures/results.

I answered this today and the response from the reflector came in blank.

This happens from time to time: I don't know why or how to fix it.

My answer was: I posed a question last week and got a response from Elecraft
support within a day.

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day and FT-8

2022-06-27 Thread N4ST - Jim
New QTH and only a 33-foot vertical for an antenna so far, so wasn't going to
play Field Day.
Finally broke down and made 50 FT8 contacts in a little over two hours Sunday
afternoon.
Didn't nano-analyze the signals, but only saw a couple of obvious problem
signals, mostly 3X audio harmonics .
Some shack room noise being transmitted from a hot mike.
Did notice that a lot of folks insisted on calling on freq instead of operating
split.

AMEN!

I am using my K3S and P3 to observe the signals. The antenna is a 4 ele
yagi at 55 ft, fed with 75 ft of 1/2" Andrew hard-line.

I agree with Jim, the ham community in general has been dumed down in
order to produce the numbers and dollars. That's what politicians
like. The same thing is happening in our schools and colleges in order
to get desired passing numbers.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 INTERFACE WITH LDG Z100A

2022-09-04 Thread N4ST - Jim
I have tried to find a way to interface a K3S with an LDG-200.
It needs a digital to analog conversion interface since the LDG uses discrete
voltage levels as inputs for the proper band. I don't know if the Z100A uses
the same analog signaling.
In the mean time, I wrote a macro to drop my K3S to 20Watts, do a TUNE, wait 2
seconds and then cancel the TUNE and bump the power back up to 70W for digital
work.
A one-click mouse solution for using the LDG memory auto-tune.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 INTERFACE WITH LDG Z100A

I purchased a Z100A with the idea of interfacing it to a specific brand/model
of radio. I investigated the Z100A requirements to initiate the control of the
tuner via the transceiver. From my earlier work, I don't see there is a
command from the K3 that will support the requirements of the Z100A. However,
there are many ICOM radios that do have the provision. Thus the command comes
from the radio.

 From the LDG manual:

"The LDG Z-100A includes the IC-104 DC power cable, as well as a three
foot IC-100 Icom interface cable. However, interface cables for a
plethora of other radios are available as an optional purchase,
definitively making the Z-100A the last tuner you'll ever need to purchase.

Press "Tune" on Tuner - Keys Automatically

  * IC-105 Alinco interface cable - uses EDX-2 jack, DX-70 and DX-77
  * IC-108 Yaesu interface cable - uses TUN/LIN and KEY jacks, FT-891,
991/A, 857, 897, 100
  * IC-109 Yaesu interface cable - uses TUN/LIN jack, FT-DX10, 1200,
FT-950, 450 (NOTE: Do not select external tuner in settings)
  * IC-115 Yaesu interface cable - uses LINEAR jack, FT-DX101D, 3000
  * IC-106 Kenwood interface cable - uses AT-300 jack
  * IC-105 Alinco interface cable - SR8T, SR9T"
  * Compatible with any Icom radio that is AH-4 or AH-3 compatible. (6M
tuning from Tuner button for radios that are only AH-3 compatible)
  * Partial radio list: IC-706, 703, 718, 7000, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7410,
746, 756, 7600, 7610 (and all variants).

I find nothing to indicate the LDG100Z will interface with the K3. In
reviewing the signals on the ACC connector on the K3, I do not find one
dedicated to the TUNE function. See page 20 in the manual, ACC(Accessory I/O)

I have tried to find a cable that goes from my K3 to the LDG Z100A tuner but
all I see is just a cable with a Molex like connector going to the tuner and
nothing on the other end of the K3 except bare wires (i.e. no connector). Does
the tuner have to get connected to the K3 ACC jack?? Or does someone have a
wiring diagram so I can marry the correct connections between the 2 units?
